HG Check In

I saw it mentioned throughout different posts, so I know I'm not the only one dreading/experiencing HG this go around. I think it'd be helpful to have a separate check in for that, because it's not typical morning sickness.

I'm only 4.5 weeks, but I already have my Zofran in hand, ready to go. What worked for you all last time? This time? What didn't work, what's not working now? Any differences between this pregnancy and any previous? <3

Re: HG Check In

  • Thanks for starting this thread! I am 5 weeks and change. Just starting to get nauseous. I was sick as a dog w/my son. Zofran was the only thing that helped. My new OB wants me to try the dic--I can never remember what it is called before she ponies up the good stuff. I've been eating like a pig the last few weeks, knowing that I will likely be barfing like crazy by the end of next week. I still can't believe I am willingly doing this again, lol!

  • FX crossed it doesn't come back for you, or if it does it's less than before! Diceglis? Spelled something like that.

I am just shoveling food in nonstop!

  • I'm 8 weeks. I've been taking Unisom and B6 for a while now, but I'm still throwing up multiple times a day. It's definitely decreased. My OB said that I should take the B6 throughout the day and that if that doesn't help, I can get a prescription. Last time, I felt terrible. I didn't take anything. I was given Zofran but was nervous to take it after some of the research I had read, so I never took it. I would say it's been the same this time around for me. Eating small meals more frequently seems to help a little bit. I'm more nauseous when I don't eat for a long time.  The more days I feel terrible, the more it solidifies that this is going to be it for me. The first tri is so hard for me and I don't think I could do it again.
  • @loko08 how long did it last for you with previous pregnancy/ies? I was really sick until about 18 weeks, only throwing up if I didn't take zofran around 24 weeks, and then by 28 weeks I only rarely took it.

  • @BritJonathan the multiple times a day vomiting/IVs twice a week lasted until 17 weeks last time. Then it tapered to a couple times a week and that lasted until delivery (threw up in the delivery room). I kept my zofran on hand until a month PP.

@mileswithmyles I'm so sorry :( If it's any help, I spoke to a cardiologist about my concerns with zofran last time (I was referred because of a condition I previously had) and he said it's safe, especially in the low dosage they give. Definitely talk to your OB/midwife about your concerns, zofran was the only thing that truly worked for me. <3

@loko08 thanks. My OB brought up a different med this time. I can't remember the name, but I will bring it up if it doesn't get better.

ETA- I think it was Promethazine
  • With DD, I took diclegis from 6 weeks through about 30 weeks. I was still sick on occasion in the first tri, but it definitely greatly helped. When I would try to wean off of it, I'd be sick as a dog again until the third tri. It did make me super tired, though.

Trying to make due without it since it hasn't hit me as bad this time. I was offered nausea medicine at my appointment yesterday, but turned it down since I was having a better day. Yesterday must have been a fluke because I felt sick all night and this morning so far. I called in to take them up on their offer for medicine. It's getting too hard to hide my nausea at work, much less be productive and drive safely. I haven't gotten sick yet, so hopefully I won't need the highest dosage and can wean off sooner this time.

  • @zizzabell523 I hear you about trying to hide it at work. I am sitting in my office with the door closed trying not to puke.

  • I had HG with my DD I had To have to have a picc line placed at 25 weeks because i literally could keep down water. I would push zofran through the picc. Everyone at work knows I'm pregnant because I'm already sick and they went through it with me last time. I have already started getting sick and it's  breaking my heart because as much asI would love to hide it it's impossible. The doctors kind of explained it like my body is allergic to HCG. what helped me last time was having the baby  you just bear it and try and get through another day, a another snack, another frozen ice cubes of gatoriaid.

Besides being sick 20-25 times a day and feeling like crud I think the hardest part of HG is feeling incapable of doing what's best for your child which is to eat and stay hydrated.

  • Yes, I have HG. I'm 7 weeks and it started at week 6. I wound up in the ER all day, attached to IVs. I'm on Diclegis now and it is helping, but it's a day by day thing. I'm looking forward to the end of the first trimester - hopefully it'll stop by then. The past couple weeks have been misery.
  • Bumping this - there's an app for iPhones for women suffering through HG from UCLA - it's a research study, and you don't get compensated, but it's apparently helping people manage their symptoms and the info can be shared with your OB/midwife. It's legit.

If anyone here is interested, message me and I'll give you the info to sign up. It's also been posted on the HG support group through the HER foundation on FB.

  • I still haven't puked! By this time with my son, I felt like I was dying. I am a little worried that maybe this pregnancy isn't viable. I have my first u/s Monday, so we will know more then.

  • @BritJonathan yay for no puking! FX that it's just a sign that you won't get sick, and that this is just a different set of (better) symptoms for this pregnancy!

  • Well the constant nausea has kicked in, even with the Zofran. So far I've only thrown up once (yesterday), but I went ahead and sent an email asking for my OB to add in Diceglis. I didn't try that last time, so I'm hoping it does something magical with the Zofran and keeps it from getting worse. Last time I waited too long to get help, and I need to stay ahead of it and not wait until it gets worse.

Has that combo worked for anyone else previously? I had to bust out the gatorade yesterday and it brought some flashbacks.

  • What is a Zofran pump?
  • This gives me serious anxiety. I had HG with my first. I was in the hospital 3 times... I kept a pregnancy journal - I looked back and the vomiting started right at week 7 last time. Well, I beat my record. Today I'm about 6.5 weeks and vomited all morning. I'm starting to feel a tad better, but I'm just so worried about how I'll get through the next 2 months....

Also, did any of you with HG the last time around have boys? Just curious.
  • This is my first time with HG and it's hell. My Dr first had me on B6 and unisom but I was still unable to keep anything down and vomiting over ten times a day so on Thursday she finally gave me an IV and zofran. I'm still pretty sick but I can keep fluids down for the most part so it's an improvement. Though it wasn't this bad, I was sick my entire pregnancy last time so I'm hoping that's not the case again.
  • @kimber308 it's like an insulin pump but with zofran

  • Not diagnosed with HG, but I'm glad I read this because it makes me feel better about taking the Zofran they prescribed me today. First dose worked, second didn't

  • I caved today and took some Zofran that was leftover from my last pregnancy (only 1 month expired...oops). I feel better.... ah.... going to enjoy these next few hours.

Last pregnancy I only took Zofran as a last resort. Has anyone taken it on a regular schedule? Like everyday? Is that fine?
  • I'm a STM with second time HG. I started my pills super early really at the first twinge of nausea. (Unisom, b6, zofran, Zantac, phenergan). I got my zofran pump this week but so far it doesn't make any difference from the pills or patch which I have already used this pregnancy. Starting everything early made it better than with my DS where I suffered for a couple weeks on just zofran until I found out about unisom b6.

Just living each day one at a time. I haven't been able to work for 3 weeks (I'm an L&D nurse). It's soooo hard with a 2 year old, my MIL comes over most days to take care of him.

Hang in there girls. I did this on purpose because those little babies are so worth it.
