GTKY: Do you plan on taking a babymoon? If so, where to?

I hope this hasn't already been asked. If so, I blame it on pregnancy brain for me not remembering :#

  • @npkat, Durango is the best!!!

  • No babymoon for us, although the idea sounds lovely! We'll make plans for a trip with friends sans kids next spring, and until then, we'll be saving up for having 3 in daycare! I love the idea of having the kids go for an overnight, maybe to their grandparents' house, so DH and I could just have some time together in the third tri before we hit baby phase again!

@npkat, that trip sounds amazing. We'll be taking 350+ 6th graders on a ski trip in February, and I'm liking the idea of chilling at the bottom with a cup of hot chocolate! I hate not being out and skiing with them, but at that point, I think I'll be happy to make it from the parking lot to the lodge without falling like a helpless turtle.

  • I love the "idea" of babymooning, but we wrote it off early after getting stressed out on a very brief weekend trip over Labor Day when a truck swerved into us and almost hit us on the freeway. We decided we're just too paranoid for not required travel right now. Plus saving money to pay for baby stuff. I really do love the idea though! Especially for trips to pretty places that involve massages. I hope all you guys have a great time!
  • We are thinking about going to Vegas the beginning of November. Lots of good food and good shows. There is also a gorgeous National Park close.

  • Nope. We had talked about going somewhere between Christmas and New Year's, but just couldn't decide on a good place to go, and were having a hard time figuring out what to do with our 2 year old. So instead we're all gonna road trip to Mississippi to see DH's family.  :)  Not a babymoon but it'll be fun regardless.

  • We're not doing a babymoon because DH switched jobs in April so won't be eligible for FMLA this time around and we're banking all his leave for when the baby comes. But we are having family come to us for both Thanksgiving and Christmas (thank goodness my MIL is officially hosting at her house across town). Our wedding anniversary falls right around our due date so we've convinced my MIL that's she'll take our DD and the new baby for a few days near the beginning of summer so we can have a relaxing staycation while I'm still on maternity leave from work.
  • Nope!  Teachers FTW!  But seriously, I think DH and I are both looking forward to a travel-free next few months of just relaxing at home while we prepare for #2.
  • We can't afford it because my goal is to get our credit card paid off by March. It would be great to start our new family off debt-free. If we could afford it, we would probably go to Tybee Island, GA. It's one of our favorite vacation spots. A cruise would be nice too.
  • @megpeg We're thinking of doing that too! DH's cousin has a condo downtown (yes, they are that rich...) they offered to let us stay at. BUT it'd be the first time leaving DD overnight and I'm not sure I'm ready. :sob:

  • I'd love to get away sometime in November.
But it's too far out for me to think about right now!
Mil has been very generous with taking DS whenever we want to get away for a few days. So it's just a matter of coming up with a good plan and getting hubby and work on board
  • We want to for first week of December but too many warm destinations have zika virus warnings.

Hawaii is perfect but it is about a 12 hour flight for me. :(

I'm now thinking California even though ocean will be cool, we can enjoy the environment at a reasonable cost. Only downfall is it's a 5 hour flight. I live in Toronto ON Canada...so I'm on the east coast.

If it wasn't for the zika virus there are many perfect hot destinations for me with short flights. Am I too concerned about it?
  • We are going to a family member's wedding next weekend in WI. Luckily the timing is perfectly matching up with October Break, so we are taking advantage of the time off work and staying an extra 3 days and calling it a babymoon!
  • I would love to go away to a cabin or a nice hotel in the woods with a spa for the weekend in the winter, but I'm not sure we'll make it happen. We're trying to save money so I can hopefully quit my job soon and stay home for a while. but if we need a break from reality maybe I'll look for a groupon deal since they always have so many. It won't be until January though if it happens because hubs is in training for his new position until Christmas.
  • We plan on going to Hawaii around Thanksgiving. Now I haven't slipped bit of info to my MFM yet. Just in case, we are thinking Disneyworld!

  • @becausescience DH's aunt and uncle have a condo on the river so we may visit them (they moved a couple years ago from a huge house in DC and sold their house for a boat load)
Leaving for the first time is really hard. The first time I left DS was to go to a wedding in Texas for 2 nights when he was 14 months. He stayed with my sister and didn't even want to come home with us when we got back. It felt terrible that he didn't miss me.

  • @npkat and @ashleyf911 thanks! Ya, its scary to take a risk and so many gorgeous destinations are off the list because of Zika.

Bermuda would be perfect BUT in December it gets a bit chilly...its pricey too and I don't think I'd go in the ocean if its cool at that time.

Although a bit cool too in December, California is fair priced and pretty. I think some parts of Cali are warmer than others. Not sure where else in the USA is zika free, gorgeous and fairly priced. I'm researching like crazy!

I wish Hawaii was doable! The flight is too long.
  • @JBcakes08 we have a cabin on Lake Superior and it is VERY snowy then - and gorgeous.  Seriously consider bringing snow shoes!  You'll have such a good time.
  • No, we just came back from Disney World a week ago.  However, DH refuses to go anywhere on a trip without the kids.  He can't believe people go on vacation and leave kids at home.  Now I have a different belief and say that is why it's a vacation.   :D
  • No, not at this point. I got pregnant on vacation over July 4 week, and we just had a family vacation in SC 1.5 weeks ago (so sort of a babymoon as I was starting 2nd trimester, except with a toddler). If anything we might take a weekend trip somewhere, but don't have any actual plans and feel bad asking our parents to watch our son overnight again in such a short time frame.

  • We aren't planning anything. With out of town hockey tournaments, visiting our family's in our hometown this weekend for Thanksgiving and Christmas in 3 months, there is just no time. That's ok though, I'll pretend I'm vacationing when I'm stuck in a hotel for hockey tournaments.
  • We don't have anything planned yet, but we definitely want to take one. We'll probably wind up taking a long weekend in the mountains vs. flying anywhere. That way we can take our dog and (hopefully) enjoy some snow and lovely winter weather!
  • We may be taking a trip.. haven't decided yet. But have thoughts of flying to the west coast to visit my brother. I wouldn't call it a baby moon though. And we would be taking DD. Which would be my choice. I have yet to spent a night away from her and she will be 2 next month!
  • @mountain_girl Tofino is beautiful! We went whale watching there on a small little boat that held about 10 people and it took us to the hot springs. If I could choose anywhere to go back, it would most definitely be B.C.

We aren't planning anything crazy but we will go to great wolf lodge in Niagara Falls before babies (probably twice... we usually go seasonally). It's more so for DS than us, but I will def hit the spa and spend ample time floating in the lazy river :)
  • @antoto that’s amazing! My husband is a snow bunny and we’ve had such warm weather the past 2 winters with barely any snow. He was determined to have a snowy Christmas this year!

  • @mmom3 I'm with your hubby! I couldn't imagine leaving my kids at home!!!

We were going to do a long weekend in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge when we go to a UT football game but decided against it. We might do a fun one night trip somewhere with our DS in January as one last family of three hoorah.
  • No babymoon for us because my husband will be gone up until Baby is born, so no time. We were supposed to be in Arizona this week as a vacation but had to cancel those plans because, again, my husband is gone  :D
  • @nancysimp I feel like all of the Zika places will be around when I'm not pregnant or TTC. Of course Brazil, Costa Rica, and Cuba are at the top of my dream list. Since you're in that area, you might look at stuff like Georgia or S. Carolina. As for the Zika maps, I don't know what Canada's version of the CDC has out but what I found for the U.S. was a little bit lazy. For example, they marked the entire state of Texas because of a case down in the Brownsville area. That's an eight hour drive from Dallas.

As for us, I'm not sure what we'll do. H just bid for vacation for 2018 so it'll partially depend on how his schedule works out and how my vacation time works out. I'd love to go to Hawaii but I almost lean towards just going when I'm on maternity leave. But we have a lot of variables that we'll just have to see how they work out when the time comes. H needs surgery and will have a lifting limit of 15 pounds for a month, we'll see if I end up having a c-section, and I need surgery in that time period, too. I am hoping that we can take a trip to the coast for a long weekend, though. I love winter stormy beach time. And, we're supposed to go to my parents' for Christmas this year. I'm hoping (even though it totally won't happen) that I could convince everyone to come to my house instead. It's a 13-hour drive including a couple mountain passes and the last two winters it has been crappy conditions. As in the one before last was the new winner for most harrowing drive of my life. It would be great if H were okay with leaving the dog at his puppy party palace and flying. Maybe once he becomes more familiar with what 27 or whatever weeks pregnant looks like he'll agree. :#

  • @kiki75 I visited S Carolina last summer and just adored it! It's a bit of a drive for us, but flight isn't bad. Will look at the weather for Georgia and S Carolina for Dec. Thanks.

Yes! That's what I was thinking....the states are huge, how can it be that an entire state has a Zika warning...and pregnant women in those states protect themselves with mosquito spray etc. Wonder what the rate of transfer to baby is...what are the chances? Better not to risk it I guess, and it's so hard to pinpoint most risk free areas since data is not perfect.

Good luck with your holiday planning and the drive if you do it! Maybe when your H sees you at 27 weeks and the not so comfy state you may be in, he'll agree a drive is not in the stars. ;) How long is a flight to Hawaii for you?
  • Check out Bermuda, hubby and I are going in November. Good deals for off season and easy flight.
  • Soooooo late to this party but I have been hemming and hawing over going to see Pitbull at the end of January at Winstar Casino just over the TX/OK border. It's only like 45 mins away but I'm thinking of staying at the hotel to have a quick night away with the hubs and maybe my sister and her fiance too. I go back and forth between "YEAH let's do it" and "Nah, it's too expensive and I'll be SUPER pregnant." Those billboards on my way to work are such a tease...
