3rd Trimester

When to stop traveling?

I'm seeing my MW this week, and I'll ask her, but when were you told to not travel far?  I'd love to get in a visit to my grandparents, who live about a 7 hour drive away, but probably can't do it for at least another couple of weeks, which would put me at like 32-34 weeks.  The only thing that makes me really nervous is that there is basically nothing between here and there.  A LOT of countryside, but not a lot of, for instance, hospitals.  :)  Totally out of the question?

Re: When to stop traveling?

  • I'd ask your MW what their preference is. My OB's take is whatever I feel like I can handle for driving, but I've been advised not to fly after 36 weeks.

  • it all depends on how comfortable you are being away from your, or any hospital

My doc said after 32 weeks I shouldn't travel more than an hour from my hospital if I really wanted to deliver there (which I do) - just in case.....

  • I think it just depends on how you are feeling.  We are going on a 6 hour trip next week.  Not really looking forward to being stuck in the car for hours on end, but it will be worth it to get away before the baby comes.
  • I'm sure you're fine.  I'm leaving for Toronto tomorrow and I'm almost 38 weeks which is a 4 hour drive from my house, 5 hours from the birth center I'm delivering at.  If you're healthy, then you're fine.

My shower is scheduled when I'm at 32/33 weeks and it will be a 5 hour car trip. I was a little worried about it and posted on here, but many others assured me that it should be okay. But, there is a lot in between, in my case (many cities we will pass) if there was some sort of emergency. But, it seems like a rare thing for something to pop up that quickly. I would think you'd have some clues prior to the car trip that something wasn't quite right.

  • I know for me I have already reached the point that I cannot be in a car longer than 45 minutes without becoming increadibly uncomfortable. Because of this no long trips for me whether my doctor says it's ok or not!

I was told the same thing. Smile

    Yep - this.

  • My midwife didn't advise traveling long distances after 34 weeks and honestly with how I felt I wouldn't have been able to handle it for more then a few hours.  Check with your doctor, as long as everything is fine with the pregnancy and you feel up for it go for it, but I would do it sooner rather then later!
