I just ordered the sneak peak test (at home blood prick test for gender) using a coupon code from their facebook page (12likesp). It ended up only being $67. I thought we could have a thread reviewing the process and the results! Anyone else doing sneak peek?

I'm assuming you guys know that if you have NIPT done it can tell you the sex for no additional cost. NIPT can be done anytime after 9 weeks.

"after 9 weeks" would indicate 10 weeks.

The method by which they test with Sneak Peek is similar to NIPT, but I'd trust NIPT over Sneak Peek since it's done by actual genetic testing companies who 1. are hired by hospitals and doctors to test for literally hundreds of genetic conditions for many medically indicated reasons other than pregnancy, and 2. are also testing for other sex-linked chromosome problems like Monosomy X (Turner syndrome), XXY (Klinefelter syndrome), Trisomy X (Triple X syndrome), and XYY (Jacob syndrome).

The rate of inconclusive results in NIPT is roughly 4%. The rate of accuracy for sex prediction with NIPT is 99.5%, which I dare say I'd trust over an u/s tech.

Not everyone's insurance will cover NIPT, so I'm sure that plays into some couples' decision to go other routes for early sex prediction.

@rmmorris yes, Panorama is NIPT. I had mine done through Counsyl because I'd used them previously for BRCA1 and for a full genetic panel due to the fact that I'm of Ashkenazi decent and therefore at higher risk for an array of genetic mutations.

@lund i was given the option today and was told it was not covered by my insurance. She said it would be 500 bucks. Nope nope nope.

Edit to say not fully covered by insurance. The 500 was my out of pocket expense.

To everyone hearing NIPT isn't covered by insurance, if it's something you really want I encourage you to call the lab to ask about their billing. I had Harmony (Ariosa Labs) in 2015 and insurance covered about half ($500ish), the lab billed me the rest, but waived the entire fee when I called about it.

@beach_mama Counsyl has a flat rate of $249 for anyone who doesn’t have insurance coverage or if you opt to not submit it to insurance because of high OOP costs.

like @Puddlewonderful said, contact your lab directly and you’ll likely get a better rate if your insurance is being stingy.

Like I said above, if you’re interested in NIPT but are being quoted high prices with insurance, contact the lab directly. Counsyl has a flat rate of $249 if you opt to not submit to insurance, and from what I’ve heard most other labs have similar (or cheaper) rates.

ETA if you’re only interested in knowing the sex and not wanting to test for health issues, that’s totally fine. I’m just saying don’t let your insurance company or doctors office steer you away from it because of price if you really want to pursue NIPT. The labs are great to work with and make it super affordable.

Stuck in quote box but technically if your doctor says they won't see you until after 9 weeks that means 9w1d or anytime after. Not 10 weeks. I am after 9 weeks right now but not 10. I was just to clarify your wording.

My doc says the new ultrasound machine at the hospital kinda takes the place of nipt. Interested to see how that goes on Oct 2.

I did Sneak Peek for fun. Sent it back yesterday and waiting on results. It was not easy collecting the sample!

Mkay.

Just for reference, the Panorama website clearly states "as early as 9 weeks" while others (Counsyl and Harmony) say "as early as 10 weeks"

So it seems there are differing opinions out there. But, we can argue semantics some more if you'd like

Or (my personal choice) just go with what your OB recommends.

I'm bummed, hubby wants to wait until week 20 when they do our full ultrasound. But I want to know now! I didn't even know this was an option my last pregnancy

So they give you three lancets to use. The sample that you're collecting is actually a good amount for just a fingerstick. I'm diabetic and I'm a nurse, I am no stranger to fingersticks. But this was a lot of blood that they wanted you to collect from a fingerstick. I did the waving my arm around and use the tourniquet on my wrist and followed the directions for collection. I ended up having to stick two different fingers and by the time I was done both my hands were just covered in blood. If you're queasy by any means I wouldn't do it. I did see videos on YouTube where people had an easier time collecting so I'm not sure what happened with me. But you have to poke your finger and then squeeze out a good amount of blood for the sample. And you have to do it relatively quickly. I would suggest watching videos on YouTube of people doing it just to get an idea. Also, you can't have anybody help you really. You certainly can't have your husband or boyfriend help you because you have to make sure that there's absolutely no chance of male contamination, otherwise you risk A false male result. I sanitized very well before I even opened the package and I made sure to set up a clean workspace with paper towels as my barrier and I followed the instructions regarding extensive handwashing. For me the hassle was worth it. Every single review and video that I saw said they were right on. Even The reviews that gave it less than five stars said the results were accurate but they were downgrading their review because of the collection process. The test works by looking at the DNA in the blood sample. Since fetal DNA mixes with maternal DNA, if they find any male chromosomes they know that it's a boy. If there are no male chromosomes in the sample it's determined to be a girl. I did see One video where the mom said that test said she was having a boy and she ended up having a girl, but she also said that during the collection her young son was right there with her the whole time so she admitted it's possible that some of his DNA got into the sample or where she was collecting. I say make an informed decision, watch videos, read reviews. At the end of the day it wasn't a super pricey test and we will be having an ultrasound anyway to confirm so I went for it.

@capricelili my DH also wants to wait until the ultrasound. I think he wants to believe it is a boy so he wants to hold on to that as long as he can lol. (I am getting it is a girl.)

I saw several reviews on Amazon saying the test was wrong for them, which is what made me rethink it. Also, I probably couldn't handle the collection process haha. :-)

Yep, this. I saw that it didn't have the best reviews. Even some reviews mentioned that they had another listing for the product that they had pulled because the reviews were so bad. Apparently it's very easy to get male DNA into the kit. So it's supposedly more accurate if it tells you the fetus is a girl as opposed to a boy.

I am doing harmony. BUT because I'm a chubby monster, they won't let me take it until 13 weeks this go around. At my initial appointment, the nurse told me it's because I'm overweight. I took at 10 weeks with my daughter and am only 3 lbs heavier this go around, so I'm not sure what that's all about. Doc did mention that they get a more accurate reading the older the fetus is. Either way, I had to laugh at the thought of my fat dna smothering poor baby's dna in my blood.

So, we will do harmony at 13 weeks, but may wait to find out sex at the 20 week ultrasound anyhow.

Yea and I don't trust myself not to accidentally contaminate it since I have DH and DS at home.

I talked to my OB office and will likely end up getting a blood test when I go to the MFM at 13 weeks (I have to wait until 13 weeks because they said that was the best time to do it). And I can't believe they told you that you had to wait because of your weight! That doesn't even make sense to me.

@BarefootContessa I am very over weight. I specifically asked my ob if being over weight would affect my bloodwork! She looked at me like I was crazy. I'm getting blood drawn tomorrow at 10.5 weeks. Now I'm wondering if I should wait. I didn't do any blood testing with my first pregnancy.

@BarefootContessa the quality of health care really declines badly for people carrying a few extra pounds. Not because of the physical differences, but because of prejudice and stupidity. Unnecessary testing is a big gap, since many OBs are convinced that being overweight is an overwhelming risk factor for GD (it's not). It's crazy what geniunely well-educated doctors will believe (like being overweight affects genetic testing).

I have always been grateful my OB doesn't make a big deal about my weight. I'm overweight, but I also always weigh in at crazy numbers because I used to lift weights and have man-muscles and bones. If she started treating me like crap because of it, I'd peace out.

Im tempted, but then i YouTube people doing it and it really asks for a lot of blood from a small finger prick. Also, the finger pricker isn't isn't like the diabetic finger prickers that you put to your finger and press a trigger. You have to manually stab your finger which kinda freaks me out too. I know, not afraid of child birth and all that goes with it, but afraid to prick my finger

Theres also an ultrasound center near me called Bellyssimo where you can go and get 3D and 4D images and they have a package that consists of two ultrasound visits. One at 14/15 weeks for early gender predictions and another at 17/18 weeks to determine. I might just do that because then Ill get lots of pictures too!

@MrsMassimilla it isn't a manual lancet. It's the same type used in hospitals and medical settings. You just put it against your finger and apply pressure to activate. You're still initiating the poke, but the lancet does the work. It works the same as a lancing device except it's disposable.

I just finished the collection process for the test. I took @Mattel s advice and watched a few YouTube videos first. It's definitely more blood than I was prepared for. I pricked my middle finger first and didn't get much. When I pricked my ring finger I got enough blood just by letting it drip into the container. It's definitely not for the faint of heart--but the actual poke didn't hurt. Can't wait to get my results! Crossing my fingers for another girl!
