Dhruv - Baby name?

Wanting opinions on Dhruv as a baby boy name. It's Indian. The DH is pronounced like THE. Let me know your thoughts!

I know a biy who has that name, he and his family are directly from India, but he pronounces it Drew-ve.

I like it, it definately fit him.

  • I appreciate cultural names, and live in an urban area, so I am used to meeting people that don't have traditional American names. There will definitely be pronunciation issues when people first read his name, but it sounds like a fairly easy name to say once you know how to pronounce it.

Although I'm all for parents naming their child a name that is culturally significant to them, I would take into consideration the area I live in. Is it likely that their will be other children (not necessarily Indian) that have cultural names, or will he be the only one?
  • Live in a urban area as well with lots of cultural names around, but do want something that has a modern/cool look and sound

So now I'm unclear if you want to be modern and cool or actually use a culturally relevant name? If it's the first that's a negative from me.

  • A culturally relevant name that also has a cool sound and look to it
  • If baby will be Indian, I say go for it. My BIL is Indian and this was actually a name on their list.

If you're appropriating a name to look "modern/cool", hard pass.

  • I was unclear - yes baby is Indian. We want an Indian name that is easily crossed over, has a cool look, is unique, etc. That's why we wanted to go with Dhruv but want opinions on it's likability, pronunciation, is it teasable, etc. Thx for the replies!
  • I think people will ask how to pronounce it but then get it right after the first time or two.  I don't see any obvious way to tease a kid with the name. It has a "cool" sound to me.
  • Not easily crossed over for me. I saw it and went, "uhhhh...?" with no idea how to pronounce it in my head.
