Re: Randoms 8/27

  • I went to a dinner party last night with a bunch of friends who are parents. I heard nothing but horror stories about how awful their kids are. Nice conversations to have with a soon-to-be FTM. Good food though!

    I feel like almost every conversation I've had with my friends w/ kids have been either sharing the scary stories about kids or how thankful they are to get away from them.... But then they always ask when I'm gonna join the club. They didn't sell it very well, lol. I'm sure it's just a bonding thing lol. And hooray for good food!
  • @Starynightsky24 My nephew got I think every conceivable Paw Patrol toy for his birthday the other month. My brother/SIL put them aside to gift later in the year (i.e. Christmas), save some to regift, and return what they can for $ or store credit on other things they'll need.

    I think experiences make a much better gift, frankly, once kids/people are old enough to enjoy. They're often more expensive and harder to return if its not the persons alley, though. I'm sure there's a way to start suggesting/hinting at that for family. "Making memories together is the best gift!" My favorite memories growing up were my dad taking us to musicals or the circus (RIP Barnum & Bailey) or sporting events.
  • Still kickin'

    lots of tornados in the area yesterday so that was scary. Where we are, everything is draining well despite having 13 inches dumped on us in 24 hours. We could get another 15-25 where we are. Unfortunately our neighborhood is not doing well. Water is up the driveways and neighbors are reporting roof damage. I am so hopefully that everything will be fine when we manage to get there.
    I hope your house is still dry when you get there!  It looks horrible.
  • @SarahFoley725 so glad you are safe!

    @Starynightsky24 I hate clutter, too. When I found out #2 was another boy, I was relieved at the thought of using the same toys instead of all new pink toys. My MIL has a shopping problem and clearly enjoys shopping for her granddaughter more than the boys. I also like the experience gifts better. Our Aunt gives us Zoo passes for the year instead of Birthday/Christmas gifts. I love it!

    @Starynightsky24 I have a friend that absolutely didn't want anymore toys so she threw a book party instead. Everyone really enjoyed it and when her kids are done with those books she can donate them.
  • @SarahFoley725 glad you are ok - stay safe!
    @Starynightsky24 - yes, when family or friends request what they can get I usually suggest any kind of experience gifts. It's a great way to make memories and eliminate clutter. That said if they don't ask and provide a gift I always express thanks. But I may put it aside for later, donate, return... so as not to add to clutter.
  • Great ideas!!! One year FIL got DS a family annual pass to the aquarium. That was a great gift! I just don't think they need so many toys.

  • @Starynightsky24 People probably need ideas what your LO needs. In the future you could suggest to the guests what they should get your LO. We usually always suggest clothing (and what size), age specific toys if DD needs some and anything else they may need. You could also suggest the experiences too. I like that idea. We have an Imagination Station (like Cosi) and a major Zoo and Aquarium that would be good gift ideas if I didn't get the membership already.
  • @BrittaniLC  there are quite a few people that would be very offended if we just told them what to buy.  Subtle hints maybe, but it's hard for us to suggest what we would like.  :/

     Experiences are by far my favorite! Books are good too though :)

    The door is open until 8.

    Loma linda vegi burger meat, pecan mill, onion, saltines, eggs, pepper, mozzarella, and BBQ sauce. I think that's it.

    Ugh! My family just loves when we suggest things to get our kid(s). It makes their life much easier. Like my sister just told me to get my soon to be 2 yr old nephew to get a TMNT pillow and matching slippers! Perfect! Amazon prime ftw. I've had them for 3 weeks now, party is this Saturday. Good luck with gifts for your LOs in the future!
  • @SarahFoley725 I have been watching the news and it looks very scary in a lot of places!! We are thinking of you and everyone affected!! Stay safe!
  • I always ask what to get kids for bday/Christmas
    I usually get something small, and then $$ for their education saving or whatever the parents want to buy for them.

    Afrer DD's first bday I took 90% of it back for store credit and put the equivalent $$ amount in her savings. People have awful taste and we too are on the anti clutter wagon.

    I cant wait to find out the sex of this baby so if it's not a girl I can start selling/donating DD's clothes and shoes

    I get that from every parent when we tell that we're expecting. I told my boss and she spent a half hour complaining about her pregnancy, labor, and kids. Like I don't know that kids are challenging. If they only knew how much money, time, and loss we've experienced just to get to this point. I know they don't mean anything by it, but I'm not going into this completely blind.
  • @BrittaniLC I wish! I'd love to know exactly what to buy as well… No one likes to have just junk laying around.

    @Aeml1985 yes! The clutter is the worst. I love money for savings as a gift, but everyone seems to be on the watch the kids get excited over expensive toys wagon.  However, I am thankful that they are loved and everyone wants to buy them gifts… Don't get me wrong.

     I also have the only grandkids on both sides.

  • Soooo, I had to tell my husbands aunt not to touch my "belly" today at our family gender reveal. She came up to me with her hands already down at my stomach, and I backed away and told her no. I feel bad for doing that, but I am sooo uncomfortable with that right now. Once I get bigger and people actually think I'm pregnant because I actually LOOK pregnant, I'll be fine with it. But damn, let me at least get there before you go touching my belly. Rant over. Thanks for listening ladies... :)
    Ugh I don't think I want anyone other than DH touching me. Like @GoogleMD said, your body isn't public property just cuz there's a baby growing in there. It can be awkward saying no to someone, but good for you for standing your ground when you're not comfortable!

    It's bad. Today has been emotionally draining. Water is in houses in our neighborhood. We are at my parents and are doing fine water wise. They're about to start releasing water from the reservoirs which will flood some of my friends for 1-3 months. Tornado warnings going off basically non stop. I'm not handling it well to be honest. It's hard to feel grateful when people we care about are suffering.
  • @SarahFoley725, I am so sorry, but I am glad you are safe. I am devastated watching the news accounts of the damage and devastation, I can not even imagine living through it. I hope it passes quicker than anticipated and I will continue to keep you in my thoughts. Thank you for updating us, but I wish you had no reason to.

    @sarafoley725 I'm sorry ::hugs::

  • @sarafoley98 I'm sorry ::hugs::
    @SunflowerMama428 tagged the wrong @SarahFoley725, but I'm sure she gets it. @SarahFoley725, you know I'm always praying for you guys! Hugs, momma.

    On a unrelated note, I really feel like I have been feeling this baby moving. I'm just shy of 15 weeks  and some authorities on that subject might say it's too early, but I say screw you! I know this feeling is not gas! It's the best :blush:
  • @SarahFoley725 how'd you guys do overnight? My cousin in Houston PD and his truck is under water in downtown Houston.
  • @SarahFoley725 hope you continue to stay safe. So very sorry to hear about your friends. It's devastating to see on the news so I can only imagine being so close. Sending prayers and hugs your way!
  • @GoogleMD
    @clc515
    Thanks ladies for reassuring me. My mom keeps telling me: get used to it... and I'm thinking, why should I?
  • @SarahFoley725 I am glad you are somewhere safe.  I saw they are opening the reservoirs.  So scary.  I hope your house has little to no water.

    @jenniferjoy37 you don't have to get used to anything.  Your body, your rules.

    @SarahFoley725 - Glad to hear you are safe. My heart is with you and your friends.

     @jenniferjoy37 - The last person that touched my belly got growled at. I'm not a toucher in general. I hate hugs from people I don't know and generally avoid situations that involve touching people other than my family and DH. People reaching to touch me without permission is my nightmare, so I'm not very polite about it.

    I decided I wanted to register on Amazon because it seemed simple and I didn't have to be overwhelmed at a store. My mother threw a fit because she said PEOPLE want to go into stores and shop for me. Remind me again why I have to care what other people want? Am I being selfish?

    Edited because words are hard pre-coffee.
  • @sarahfoley725 thank you for the updates! Thinking of you and hope you stay safe!!!
  • @SarahFoley725 I'm so sorry! That must be so hard. I'm thinking of you!

  • @ash0625, make sure to get the Amazon registry free gift box. It actually had really good things. Right now we are using the registry as a planning tool for what we need. I think people from our generation would rather shop online (at least I would) and our parent's generation would rather go to the store. I think an Amazon registry is fine, so long as all your guests are not from your parent's generation.
  • My daughter went camping with her girl scout troop this weekend. When I picked her up the troop leader pulled me aside to let me know one girl had singled out my daughter and was being mean to her and my daughter had been crying.  My daughter is pretty awkward but very nice. Held it together but I wanted to cry myself. Aaaah parenting!
