The dreaded (or not) glucose test coming up so thought I'd start a tread where you can share your experience and tips and hints of getting through it. ...anyone already had one?
I had to do the glucous test at 12 weeks. I was told to drink it cold through a straw from a friend. I didn't mind the taste however it gave me a sugar rush and I didn't like the way it made me feel.
@ShePersisted I was told they like it done by week 28/29. No advice on it though my midwife offers a different option is glucola isn't your thing, it's 58g of sugar they figured out how much oj that was. Drink it cold but you can't add ice to it. I was sent home with mine for my next visit since you drink it 45 minutes before the blood draw.
For anyone who has done it, do you know if we can drink water while wait in the hour? I normally have a hard time with blood draws unless I'm super hydrated. Going this week...should be fun...
@photogal1317 I was told minimal sips of water during the test. This was almost 4 years ago and your testing site could have different rules. I was told to hydrate the day prior/morning of.
Mine on Friday but I had an early one .for no real reason . Was to do with my initial blood results but since that was my first ever blood test they did full blood and was non fasting and also early so close to breakfast and it put my sugar .01 over the hospitals tolerance . So I got sent for an early .
This time I'm taking food to eat when done . As we have midwife appt right after . Last time we went to breakfast but I nearly fainted waiting for the order in that extra 30 min . So I'd take something to eat right after
@photogal1317 Yes I was informed from the fasting period only water is allowed small sips and only if you have to . You need to be at a resting rate in between so take something to do that doesn't involve moving around . Defiantly hydrate well in the day before to help
@MaximumEffort Here they take blood first so you can't have the syrup at home . They take a fasting /resting draw then you drink the stuff have to finish all of it in min and wait 1 hour . Then they take more blood . Wait 1 hour and they take a 3rd draw
@ShePersisted Shouldn't you be able to get the test done anyway. They'll just send the results to your OB Who should of already given you a referral to pathology for it
Oh here it tastes like lemonade syrup concentrate so undiluted cordial slightly carbonated. I dont drink soft drinks so I found it horrid . Glad it's only 300ml not looking forward to repeating the experience
I get to skip it this time (I had gastric bypass and this would make me throw up). Instead I will take my fasting and post prandial blood logs for a few days. I passed this test early so hoping I'm still fine. I had GD last pregnancy but was much heavier then. Good luck all!
Mine is August 31. I've heard to get orange or fruit punch Glucola and NOT grape.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
Mine is Aug. 23. I'll be 28 weeks then. That's the typical time they do the test, I think, so you should be good at 27 weeks @ShePersisted. Mine makes me take the drink as soon as I get to the office; no food or drink afterwards because it could mess up the results. Blood draw after an hour. I'm bringing my book! I'll also have my normal check-up while I wait, and I'm getting the TDAP vaccine at that appointment as well, although I'm not sure if they do that before or after the blood draw. I hope everyone's test goes well!
I was supposed to do mine at 12 weeks due to my weight but dragged my feet due to my horrible morning sickness. I made it through though and it really wasnt that bad. It did make me feel a little woozy but I ate after and was fine.
@NYTino24 I had the orange with DD and it tasted like Tang drink if you have ever had that. Mainly like kool aid or other drink mix with waaay to much powder/sugar added to it.
My OB said no need to fast this time but for breakfast I can only have 1 piece of wheat toast 1 egg and an 8 oz glass of water. I'm arriving early to drink the glucola then I will have my appointment with the OB and go back for my blood draw. Last time it wasn't too bad so I'm hoping for a similar experience.
ETA: I've heard the lemon lime is the best and the cola flavored is the worst. It really depends on what they have as my options last time were orange or fruit punch. I despise all things fruit punch.
@foxairt Yes I probably could but then I have to take additional time off from work so I think I'll just wait until when it's time. I took the test first time I was pregnant and it was positive on the one hour but negative on the 3 hour. I am hoping it remains the same this time too.
Definitely drink it cold, the colder the better. My OB only has the orange flavor and I down it as fast as I can then rinse my mouth out. They give it out early, so I just pop it in the fridge until the day. This time my test will be in the afternoon as my OB appointment is in the afternoon, so I'm hoping they give me some kind of specifics as to what I can eat that day.
All I have to do is drink a little bottle of Welch's grape juice and fast before drinking it 45 mins before my appt. I always set my appts up for early in the morning that way I don't have to wait all day to eat last pregnancy I did the same thing but still felt sick from drinking it on an empty stomach and waiting in the doctors office. Good luck ladies
I had to take mine early because I had GD with my 1st. It went away immediately after he was born, and I luckily escaped it for with my 2nd. I failed the 1 hour by just a few points, and then failed 2 of the 4 draws during my 3 hour- so, I have it again with my 3rd. I think the fruit punch flavor is the best, followed by orange, and then lemon-lime. Definitely drink it as cold as possible. At my OB's office, they allow you to take a few tiny sips of water during the hour only if you are super nauseous from the drink and need water to help keep it down. It isn't really that bad, but it certainly isn't pleasant either. I would definitely recommend a protein heavy breakfast with minimal carbs/sugar the morning of. Good luck!
Thank you so much mommas for this! Idk when mine will be yet. They haven't even brought it up, but my next appt is Tuesday so I'm gonna ask then. Sucks I'll probably have to miss work for it ..I'm constantly missing work for my appts, but there's no way I could wait til 5pm to get this one done.
@kaitlinliz see where they are having you do it. I did mine at the lab with my medical group and could go anytime I wanted within a 2 week window. The office opened at 7am, so I could have been out of there by about 8:10 had I gone during the school year. You may have to be a little late, but maybe not miss a while day?
Got mine done today and passed thank God. It gave me a terrible headache but It didn't last too long. Since I was off DH & I made a date day of it and spent some much needed time together since I just got back in town from a work trip.
@photogal1317 thanks I will definitely ask on Tues when I go in. Hopefully I can do that, our work is a bit weird, if I drive in with clients I work 745-4, but if I go myself the longest I can work is 9-3 and because we take our clients in the community if they're not at our program when I'm ready to go in I have to wait til lunchtime - we can't be at the program without clients. And by then I'd only get 3 hours so it's not worth it for me for the pay we get lol! It's pretty confusing but easy to get used to.
Due to work timing and travel (and my doctor forgetting to schedule it for my appt today), I scheduled my glucose test for September 14. I just realized I will be 30 weeks at that time. I read typically they recommend it between 24 and 28 weeks.
Does anyone know if it really matters if it is 2 weeks later? Should I call to reschedule?
@dragonfly87-2 I'd call and ask. I have a 2 week window where I can go to a lab - they said I didn't need to schedule for the lab, and to just go in. But they were adamant I go during that time frame and we're even given dates I have to get there between. Who knows if my place is just anal about it or if it really needs to be done only during that time.
@dragonfly87-2 my test is a few days after 28 weeks. I think if you suspect you may have GD then you should try to modify your diet especially during that two weeks. If you do not think you are at risk then it should probably be ok. You can always call and ask your OB just to make sure.
Just got done with my glucose test! I was super nervous as sugar never sets well with me since I was young. It was not bad at all so don't fret! It tasted surprisingly fine and didn't make me feel anything bad, which usually sugar does. Waiting for my test results this afternoon. I peed on the stick after my appointment though and sugar did come up in it so they said that means I might not pass. Anyone else have this?
@Lypyper33 I have never heard of that. I always thought they did a blood test!
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
@Lpyper33 I had my 24 week check-up today. I didn't do the glucose test but they did check my urine and found sugar in it. It freaked me out but the nurse did a blood test and it came back at 75 which is supposedly normal/low. The doc explained that sometimes our kidneys just have a hard time processing all the blood/fluid in our pregnant bodies which is why the blood tests are much more accurate. So hopefully this is the case for you!
I took mine yesterday and surprisingly I passed! My sugars were high at the beginning of this pregnancy and I developed GD late with my first, and my numbers were borderline with my second. I've modified my diet to cut out obvious sugar (candy, chocolate, ice cream, soda) but kept the not as obvious (pasta, rice, breads) so I wasn't sure if it was going to be enough. I love me some carbs, so I was worried.
Instead my OB has decided that I'm anemic (not shocking at all) and I need to take iron pills every other day. I'll take that over GD.
I had my test this morning. My birth center has you schedule the test around a standard visit - drink the syrup before your appointment, and then get the blood draw afterward. The glucose syrup is certified gluten and dairy free, just in case anyone else needed to know that (i have allergies to both). The taste was fine; basically it is orange soda syrup. I had no problem getting it down. Now, however, I feel absolutely gross. I do not eat much in the way of sweetened foods. Tons of fruit, yes, but very little in the way of food or drink that is sweetened either naturally or artificially. I'm fairly nauseated, have a splitting headache, and feel lethargic. Results should be in this afternoon. I'm not really worried; my bloodwork has been great so far. But seriously - once I feel up to eating today I swear all I want to eat is broccoli and nuts. Absolutely no more sure. For days.
Wha. Never heard of urine test for GTT. I had a full blood draw for the first fasting draw before taking the drink . They use it to check everything else since they are already taking blood Vit D was only thing that came back low I had 5 small viles taken the first draw and the the normal 2 after that . I'd say there's a big difference tho in medical care between countries
@foxaírt I will have a blood draw for my glucose test. My previous testing was a very large number of vials I think 7 in total but this was also because we opted for additional genetic testing.
Has anyone done their test in the afternoon? My next appointment at 27.3 when my OB mentioned doing mine is an afternoon appointment. The office didn't give me any instructions about lunch or fasting
