Baby Names

We like Avery...for a BOY!

Hey guys!  We just found out we're expecting baby #4 and we're pretty set on a girl name.  We really like Avery for a boy but most people associate Avery with girls.  Would it be too weird (nowadays) if we named our little boy Avery?

Also, any mn suggestions?  Our last name sounds like "Nix."

TIA!

I think Avery sounds great for a boy. Isn't it originally a boy name anyway? I wouldn't blink at it.

  • Nope, not weird at all. Great name!

  • Great name!

Our friends just used Avery for a boy and the reaction has been great honestly.

  • I agree Avery is wonderful for a boy. Here are some middle name suggestions:

    Avery Bertram
    Avery Brendan
    Avery Carol
    Avery Crispin
    Avery Edward
    Avery Evander
    Avery Frederick
  • Great for a boy.
  • I wouldn't use it for a boy. I know it's originally a boy name, but it's a top 20 name for girls now and not nearly as popular for boys. I feel it's been "taken over" by girls. My husband's name is Robin, formally unisex but 100% of people act like this is a girls name. He's always hated it (especially like middle and high school). No 17 year old boy wants "a girls' name."

I agree that even though it was a boys name, in his generation it will be more commonly known as a girl name which will probably bother him and/or you at some point.  Imagine being a 30 year old man names Dana, Ashley, Leslie.... people are likely to assume female when they see it on paper.
  • Definitely prefer Avery on a boy anyway!

  • I would definitely use it for a son. Doesn't everyone read Charlotte's Web still, or at least watch the movie? Fern's older brother is Avery, I feel like that is enough reference to it being a boy name for children to understand.

One of my sons is named Francis. No one has every mentioned anything about it being unisex or a girl name and therefore problematic.

  • Great point about Charlotte's Web. That is still read in many schools.

I also think today's kids are growing up in a much more tolerant atmosphere than some of us were used to. I kind of doubt/hope unisex names are going to be as big a deal to them as they are to older generations.
  • I'm so glad to hear the name Avery on a boy.....Though it's "popular" I do not like it as a girls name.

  • I've never met an Avery before, boy or girl, but I associate it with boys.  I don't think that it would be a problem for a son. Middle name ideas for you:

    Avery Ashton
    Avery Frederick
    Avery Jack
    Avery Morgan
    Avery Richard
    Avery Robert
    Avery Sloane

  • I know a little boy Avery who is 10 and he rocks this name. I love it on boys too.
  • I know an Avery John, personally not my cup of tea considering so many girls have been using it. Like names Such as Madison, Emerson, Allison, Riley even, have all gone to the girls.
