Sleeping is bad for the baby

I was told that sleeping too much us bad for the baby. I haven't taken a nap in weeks and when I took a nap today my boyfriend's grandma told me I need to stop taking naps because it harms the baby. You lay down so much that the baby's going to be laying the wrong way in the womb.

Re: Sleeping is bad for the baby

  • Well then, my baby is going to be in great condition seeing as though I can't sleep.....
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm in trouble then because I nap whenever I get the chance. I imagine not resting when you need to is worse for the baby than sleeping "too much" (if there is such a thing while pregnant).
  • My understanding is as long as you are sleeping on your sides and not spending all day in bed. Nap away. I love my Sunday afternoon naps!
  • Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is some made up crap. I take naps on weekends and I have no regrets. My doctor has never said that too much sleep is an issue.

  • Napping and sleeping is not an issue. The issue is some positions can contribute to baby not being in the best birthing position and it becomes more important as pregnancy progresses and they have less room to move around. Ideally you should be laying down on your left side as much as you comfortably can. And not reclining when you sit down. Laying on your back for too long can reduce blood flow but is obviously okay for short periods of time. Otherwise, sleep and nap as much as you can!
  • @wyomama0427 yeah but you can fix all that stuff with essential oils, right? MAGIC!

In all seriousness, I am often finding myself waking up on my back even though I try my damnedest to sleep on my side, so I feel like a failure at motherhood already.
  •  OP  Taking naps is great for you, for as long as you're not sleeping allll the time.  The problem with sleeping on your back is that the baby can put pressure on your vena cava (major blood vessel), and disrupt blood circulation. But, yay for human bodies being awesome!, you will wake up with 'symptoms' of this long before anything bad happens. Previously, I've woken up from shortness of breath while sleeping on my back, but it resolved as soon as I rolled onto my side.  I wake up on my back (without breathing problems most of the time) all the time.

@ColoradoHiker what you wrote makes me feel a lot better!  I'm actually more comfortable on my back (but know my side is best) and have been forcing myself to sleep on my side but a little z's on my back isn't the worst!

Ded :joy: essential oils and coconut oil. Lol.
  • In a way yes that statement can be correct. Maybe she just only sees you lounging around and thinks you are lazy?  :o
  • Oh and coconut oil is AHmazing!  I put that shit on everything and I mean EVERYTHING!
  • To clarify, by "Exactly" I meant that you're just proving my point lol
  • So tired of people trying to micromanage my life.  There are enough real public health issues to contend with; anything else is just controlling women.  Ugh.
  • I think the bottom line is don't listen to medical advice unless it is coming from a licensed medical provider that knows your personal history and situation! So much misinformation and old wives tales floating around!

Meanwhile, my tossing and turning at night is leading me to bend the rules a little bit on my caffeine intake
  • I'm only allowed up 6 hours ish a day so I sleep a lot because I'm bored.  I asked my doc if me sleeping all the time was a problem and she laughed and told me to sleep as much as I wanted while I had the chance. Also, my little guy has been in the birthing position a few weeks now (I am 33 weeks today) so all the horizontal time hasn't affected that in my experience so far... I wouldn't stress out, enjoy your naps.

My activity isn't as restricted as yours, but I'm still required to be fairly sedentary and this is what the dr wants me to do! If I don't follow the rules I either have contractions or bleeding or both, so I'm pretty sure my sedentary lifestyle is what's safe for baby and me. My little guy has also been head down for several weeks, so no negative impacts there either!

    Um........... wait.. what?

If your doc put you on bed rest starting at 16 weeks, I'm not sure that starting to exercise every day at 36 weeks is the wisest move. I'd chat with your doc to find out what is safe for your situation.

    Tamatoa is my favorite too!!

  • Just an FYI... I used coconut oil as a hair mask last night and my hair is super soft and not frizzy today.   Coconut oil  <3<3<3<3<3  I also used it on stitches that I received from a mole removal a few years ago instead of petroleum based products like Vaseline or Neosporin and the nurse and doctor wanted to know what I used because they had never seen an incision heal so well.  And I oil pull with it and peppermint essential oil every morning ;)
  • @wyomama0427 I am not sure if she meant she was still on bed rest or not but if baby is breech it is recommended to do specific exercises to turn baby (whether or not you have been exercising during pregnancy) but I could not understand most of that horrific paragraph she typed.
  • @justboard10 @wyomama0427 If that's what she's referring to then that makes more sense. The exercises they recommend to turn a baby are more akin to a PT exercise, not the kind of exercise I thought she was talking about.

Psh but duh she totally goes there now. Don't you know you're totes a reg after you intro?
  • @shaloncutestmum breech presentation is more common with placenta previa and low lying placenta. You may want to check out Spinning Babies exercises to help encourage baby to get into a head down position.
