Another word... do you say cou-pon or q-pon. My mom says q-pon and it drives me crazy!
My husband says q-pin. Idk why it annoys me, but it does.

and just to add to the fun: Syrup... do you say "sir-up" or "seer-up"?

I say sir-up. I'm a southerner (NC) but many others say I don't have a southern accent. My father fought his southern GA accent so hard that he has almost no regional accent so I blame him.
  • @erindippity @PinkPrincessPiper
I say Luh-vuhl for Louisville. It's always interesting when you hear people say Looey-ville, you know they're not from here.

  • @Nxy growing up in north eastern Indiana, I was shocked at how different my sister sounded when she moved to Michigan. Her "O's" were the thing I noticed the most. I pointed it out to her once and she had no idea she was speaking differently.

  • I didn't realize how much people saying seer-up bothered me until it came up in here, hahaha ... but my skin crawls when it happens. It's sir-up! Gah!
  • Team Seer-up. Sir-up just sounds wrong.

My H was raised with Philadelphia influended speech, and I think the way he says water is so cute. It's "Wudder". On our honeymoon he asked for water and the waitress was "I'm sorry, I don't think we have that here."

We do butt heads pretty strongly when it comes to sprinkles vs. jimmies though. Apparently I take my ice cream condiments seriously because I get irrationally super pissed off when he calls them jimmies. It's going to be an uphill battle to make sure our children refer to them correctly as sprinkles.

  • @Mango517 I have cousins that were raised in Maryland. Both parents are from Georgia, but the oldest one pronounces water as widder and it's widdermelon. She also calls pretzels "princles". There are other things she and her sisters say weird but I don't know if it's a pronunciation or a speech problem
  • @Mango517 omg "wudder" is the worst. I went to school in PA with a bunch of Philly people and that along with "crick" for creek and "beg-ul" for bagel irked me to no end!
  • @mango517 Wudder is so funny!  My husbands family all grew up in NJ, so they all say water like that.  They also say beer=bear and bear=beer.  Its very confusing!

  • People that say WARshington or WARsh.  :s:s
  • @cmmiller531 I used to work with a lady who talked like that. She was from Vermont.

Warsh, gararge, drawering, etc. She called me Anner instead of Anna and a coworker was Daner, but Dana.

How people pronounce things entertains me to no end!
has anyone taken this quiz?  I love it and found it to be pretty accurate for a bunch of family and friends. It's The NY Times dialect quiz that came out a few years ago-- great car trip activity!
