Carmel. I pronounce it Kar-Mel not Kare-Ah-Mel. I find it nonsensical to add an extra syllable to the word. Yet again, I am the person that pronounces the tts in button instead of making them sound like ds.

I can't stand when a store says it has things in stock and you show up and they don't have nothing in stock. A waste of time, gas, energy for a pregnant lady.

I'm confused? It's caramel. So there is an extra syllable there-the second a. And I've never heard people say button with d's. Must be a regional thing? New Yorker here.

I hate how my hair looks every time I leave my salon. I get it, you don't know how to style naturally curly hair. I really want to bring my own products and do it myself after they cut it.

Carmel verus caramel.

I'm born-and-bred Chicago area person here and I think "carmel" is a regional pronunciation. The dialect of Chicago and it's surrounding suburbs is rather distinct. To Tova's point about the "t" sound, I'm definitely guilty of blurring mine. "Twenty" dollars is "twenny." "Button" is "but-un."  "Do you have a twenty?" would come out "Do ya gotta twenny?"

I swear I'm more articulate in my professional environment though!

I don't like ice water. I'd rather it be room temperature. If it's too cold it makes me feel sick. The hotter I am, the worse I hate it being cold. I don't really like ice in anything, it dilutes it. I will go to chick-fil-a and get a large lemonade with no ice.

@SouthernMama15  I hate ice water too.  It drives my mom crazy when she visits because we never have ice cubes in our freezer.

@tova24 I pronounce carmel the same way you do, but I think its becuase there is a town by where I grew up that is spelled/said that way.  I know a lot of people who add the extra a in there when talking about the food, but I always said them the same way.  Same for button or mitten, I pronounce both t's, but-ton or mit-ten.  My sister is the same way, and when she went to college in Kansas, a lot of them told her that she had a weird accent.  So maybe some of it was regional.

@shyviolet we have an ice maker, but we never use ice. I drive DH crazy because we have a nice water filter pitcher and I get mine from the tap. He thinks it's because I don't want to refill the container, but it's too cold.

Pecan is another one that drives me nuts. My sister says pee-can, I say pa-con. Her fiancé is from the North, and she pronounces everything the way he says it now. Including car-a-mel. So annoying.

Guys, pronounce it however you want, but like @brookedeyo said, it's spelled CARAMEL. Not Carmel, that's a place.

@nxy I used to pronounce crayons as "crowns" and my hubby made fun of me, so I try to say it 'properly' now.

@mrsmatt1212 totally agree on the spelling, despite always pronouncing it Carmel (food and place).

My UO for today is that just because someone is a blood relative, it doesn't make them family. Coming up on 2 years since I've spoken to my sister, and I don't regret it for a second. Sometimes you just have to cut out the toxic negativity in your life (even if it's a relative).

@tova24 If you're talking about the city in California you're correct. If you're talking about the the deliciousness resulting from melting sugar, that's caramel. There's an "a" there to be pronounced. 

@SouthernMama15 I love ice water! Even more now because it makes the baby move like crazy!

My UO is that I can't wait for my shower to be over. Yes, I'll love to receive all the gifts but... MIL invited over 60 people, some that I don't even know (but know DH from growing up). I just have 0 fucks left to give. I can't imagine smiling and making small talk for 4 hours.

That's how I feel about any socializing now. We have a friend's kid's first birthday Sunday and I'm not going, just because I'd rather lay my pregnant ass on the couch and watch bad TV than socialize for 4 hours.

@SouthernMama15  I am lucky because DH and I like our water the same way.  When we used to have a water pitcher we just kept it on the counter.  Now we have such good tap water we don't bother.

@PinkPrincessPiper I used to do the same thing with crayons.  I didn't even know I was saying it wrong.  It still takes thought for me to say it right and even then I am not sure I am saying it 100% correct.

My UO: I'm pro BF in public, but I don't want to see your pictures of it on Facebook. If it's in a mom group, that's fine, but just a personal Facebook post, it's weird to me.

On that note, I think people post way too much personal info on facebook. It's your kid's first day of 5th grade? Cool. Oh, your kid goes to Jefferson Elementary on King Stresr and is in room 205 with Mrs. Smith? Too much info.

On the theme of pronouncing things...My DH and his family say Salza, not Salsa- drives me nuts. But the best is that he thought the phrase 'play it by ear' was 'play it by year' I was so confused the first time he said it, like um that isn't a phrase...he had no clue. I know a few other people who don't use those type of phrases in the right context and it bugs me so much!

@aehogan90 - I've unfollowed several friends and family members because of their overload of kid photos/info. DH and I put nothing out there in regards to DD (personal preference). I think my sister posted a "welcome to the world" when I gave birth to her, but there are no photos or stories/comments out there about her otherwise. My MIL and FIL tend to "share" absolutely.everything.ever. (I don't know that they know how to use facebook properly), and I don't know their facebook friends, so we chose to keep DD off facebook completely. We'll do the same for this one.

That's probably my UO . No kids on public facebook for us.

I'm cracking up at the mispronounced words. DHs great uncle owns a flooring store and a lot of their family works there. One of the flooring installers who has worked there for years is Hispanic and his name is Enrique. They call him In-ricky.  Until I met the man I had no idea what they were saying. We've tried to correct them and they don't listen. Told them it's disrespectful and still nothing. Half the time the just call him Ricky. One of the grandsons married a girl named Jana, which they pronounce Jane-uh. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be pronounced the same as Anna or Hannah, but I don't want to ask. It's embarrassing.

@southernmama15 My DHs late grandfathers (abuelo) name was Humberto, and His maternal grandparents gave up trying to pronounce his name and just always called him bert. Some of my family has a hard time pronouncing Chipotle, they sort of say it like chi-pot-el.  But the best one is from my sister.  When she was little she tried to order a quesadilla off the kids menu, and called it a quasi-de-la!  To this day we call them that, becuase it was so cute!

@littlebug2010 that's so cute. My dad works for a Japanese company and a lot of the Japanese employees choose American names to make things easier. It just drives me crazy because his family doesn't even try. I'm sure they'd be ticked if someone said their names wrong.

Yeah, I have a UO too that there is definitely too much detail that people are willing to post. I got into an argument with an acquaintance briefly on FB once and she defriended me for my view. I'd said I was shocked that someone had posted a photo from immediately after her c-section. The picture depicted her on the operating table with husband holding the newborn near her head; the curtain and the surgeon- clearly still operating- were in the picture! Why didn't they post a picture from when they were back in recovery? The operating room seriously? Sorrynotsorry but keep those photos to yourself/family, not 500 friends and their friends who can see comments for friends-of-friends. The acquaintance said, "Why can't you just share their joy?" and I'm like, I can share someone's joy whether the child is 2 minutes old or 2 hours old, but I don't feel the need to see a surgeon operating on you. We don't post pictures from mid knee-surgery, do we?

This was actually awhile ago, and now that I'm pregnant I'm glad people have posted graphic pictures on Instagram but it's usually from birth-specific accounts. People willing to put graphic stuff out there is great from an educational perspective. But, it's one thing for me to seek out strangers' birth photos to prepare myself, and quite another to be scrolling my newsfeed and seeing- bam!- my high school classmate's wife's bloody legs and freshly gooey newborn with umbillical cord. I need to be mentally prepared for graphic content!

@DeansGirl14 I feel like I know people who would post their knee surgeries. Some people do post everything. I did post a pic of DS and myself in the OR, but he was wiped off and swaddled.  All you can see is our faces.

I've seen tons of faces while still in OR (or at least I assume while still in OR), and I don't mind those at all. I have to agree with @DeansGirl14 that seeing the operation still going on would've been surprising to me, haha.

I think our hospital doesn't allow video/photography during deliveries (c section or vaginal). It's a liability thing.

On all of the pronunciation - 100% agree it's spelled carAmel but regional diction is regional diction so pronounce it however. I'd say car-a-mel is more common but I've lived in New England, New York, and California so that's probably skewed. DH and I used to live in Monterrey, right by Carmel-by-the-sea (the official, quite pretentious name of the town in CA) and I have always adored it.

When I studied abroad in London, the US students had a similar discussion with our TA and he was like "it's al-oo-min-ee-um, why do you drop a syllable?" but in the US we actually spell aluminum differently, hence the different pronunciation. I geek out on this stuff...I love analyzing the differences in where people grew up and what they call/how they say things. Slippy/slippery, buggy/cart, wicked/hella, jimmies/chocolate sprinkles, etc.

My nana says mozz-er-el-ee instead of motz-er-el-a (no idea why...that's just wrong) and she also says chip-o-tel instead of chip-o-tlay like someone else mentioned. My sister could never say balloon so it became bloon in our family.

@SouthernMama15 plus one to room temp water. After DD was born, the nurses actually thanked me for not wanting ice in my water. They said it was much more accurate knowing how much I was drinking since there wasn't any ice. 

@PinkPrincessPiper I'm curious where your definition of "north" is since you are in northern KY? I've always said pa-con but when I lived in Georgia, all I ever heard was pee-can.

I usually go for room-temp water as well (or cold from the fridge, but absolutely no ice).  With this heat being pregnant though, I can't get enough ice!!!  The colder the drink, the better.

I'm trying to figure out if you guys are talking about using glottal stops or not. It's pretty common on words like button or mountain. Then again, I'm an SLP and nothing short of IPA transcription will do.

In terms of mispronunciations, I recently discovered that my mom pronounces chihuahua "chi-wow-wow."

@bumpybump He's from Ohio. I guess I consider that North! A lot of people don't consider Kentucky to be south, but the sweet tea & accents beg to differ. 

Maybe I'm just an idiot when it comes to pronunciation. I swear I'm educated.

I don't pronounce anything right by American standards since I have a Brazilian accent! Sometimes DH try to explain the difference between two sounds and I'm like "it sounds the same to me"

Another word... do you say cou-pon or q-pon. My mom says q-pon and it drives me crazy!
