AMA check in for Mamas age 35+

1. Age Now / Age at delivery: 36 now, but my birthday is the end of So I'll be 37 for delivery.

2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? This is number 4. I missed the AMA cutoff by 6w iwth my youngest. I was AMA for the pregnancy I lost as well.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? Best: flameworthy but being eligible for the bloodwork that also tells you the sex early (having had a loss and being AMA I'd get it done anyhow but it seems for sure a bonus). Worst: higher risk of complication s and health issues.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you?

STM+. This is #4 for me and my first AMA

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA?
I am also looking forward to the extra testing and being able to find out the gender early. I'm so impatient when it comes to stuff like that!

I also feel much more calm and relaxed being an older mom. I had my first at 23, my second at 25, and my third at 29... I noticed a definite difference in my emotional maturity with my last one. That's an added bonus of being AMA.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you?
I have 12 siblings between my adopted and biological families. So I always knew I wanted a big family.

@favoritemandms I know... doesn't the label "high risk" sound worse than just being in our mid-30's? I don't have any other risk factors either. It'll be interesting to see how the doctor treats this pregnancy versus the others I've had.

@ladybugsamom I'm trying out new OB's with this one bc my last was horrible. He tried to pressure me into having a c section because my son was measuring big and he "didn't think I could do it." Luckily I went into labor when he was on vacation. I would be scared to see what he'd do now that I'm 36.... whoooooo, 36

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? Best: I feel like this was the time of life I was supposed to become a mom...everyone's journey is so different, and for me, I have no regrets about being an 'older' mom Worst: harder to lose the weight after with a slower metabolism!

@favoritemandms lol I know right!? Let me know how your search goes. I decided to go with a new OB this time too (for different reasons) and I'm super nervous about another/different doc performing surgery (I'll be a repeat CS).

@raeliz13 I wish I hated soda. It's a struggle for me to drink enough water because I always want something sweet and carbonated to drink!

@mountain_girl If I had it to do over again, I would have waited and not had my kids so young. It was such a different (better) experience for me when I had my last at 29. I was much more emotionally mature and handled the entire journey with less stress and panic.

worst thing: I'm bigger already and don't look forward to the 'concerned comments' about my health and weight.

Fun fact: I'm the person everyone asks to open jars. when I was being trained as a massage therapist I learned hand muscle training and can crush and apple using my thumb and ring finger.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? Like many of you I do like the extra testing. What is this about finding out the gender early? Are y'all talking about through amniocentesis or another method? That seems terrifying to me. I guess the worst thing about AMA is the increased risk of birth defects.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you? I won a national sweepstakes to Six Flags Atlanta and to a Braves game through TBS when I was 7.

I guess I haven't thought about it. I have had GD with my other pregnancies at 12 weeks so I have always had extra testing.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? Lol, I am probably healthier now than I was in my 20s.

My husband and I might not be done after having this baby. It all depends on what my high risk physician says.

@muggle621 My OB offers NIPT testing. It's a blood test that looks at free radicals and it can determine the babies sex. I believe she does it at 10 weeks. For me it would be free because I'm geriatric.

Nooooo not the amnio (hard pass from me, which is why I never did the nt testing previously, too many false alarms or low risk results but then child was born with major issues... I've known 3 ppl who that happened to with Down syndrome... I wasn't willing to do an amnio to confirm results so I didn't bother with the tests that weren't definitive. Anyhow there ar relatively new blood tests available I think in the last 3-4 years (they weren't around for Isaac who is 4.5 but were for Rory who isn't 2). It's a blood test I think usually along with an ultrasound. Tests for a whole bunch of stuff and also tell you the sex, genetic testing so no mistakes. There are a couple brands. Harmony is one I think and another common one that's name escapes me. Non invasive! But it generally isn't converted by insurance unless you are high risk, included AMA

@SP128 and @pghctwife Ohhhhhh ok I vaguely remember reading about that in What to Expect but obviously it flew out of brain this morning. Also thank you for the heads up on insurance coverage. If that is something which needs to be done (which I bet it will since I'm 36) then I will be sure to get a price.

Best - Feeling way more mature to handle this stage of my life then I would have in my 20s.
Worst - The stupid label. The good thing is my OB's wife was expecting at 44, so he's on board and knows how to handle anything that may come with AMA.

I can't stand spiders, all I imagine is that movie Arachnophobia. Since this is the AMA group, I'm sure many of you know it...

Best: I have been through a few pregnancies so I am more relaxed and can sit back and enjoy this one more. I try not to worry about additional risks because they are out of my control.

Worst: Being Coined Advanced Maternal Age. Although I guess it's better than the older term Geriatric Pregnancy.."Yes doc...one day I just decided to dust the cobwebs out of my uterus and bam...baby"

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you?
I have lived in India, Canada, on an Island in the Florida Keys and now in the Mountains. I love yoga skiing, travel, music, cooking, adventures,.. But more recently hiding in the bathroom for a luxurious 5 minutes. While my 3 and 1 year old babes try everything in their power to break the door down...... soooo glamorous.

@muggle621 just to echo the others, the genetic testing is completely noninvasive. It's likely that your doc will say it's medically necessary (yay AMA!) therefore making it covered by insurance, but I've heard there are ways you can get a price break if not.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? I did get the Mat21 last time but other than that I wasn't considered high risk or anything so I didn't have any other appointments or tests. I was barely AMA though so maybe it'll be different this time.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you? This will be my third c/s and will be scheduled between 3/19-3/23 if this baby is born on 3/20 the age gaps for our kids will be exactly the same to the day...2 years 3 months and 4 days. Didn't plan that, just something I realized when doing a due date calculator.

FTM, I've had 3 miscarriages; I have a 19 yo stepdaughter in college. My husband is practically starting over!

Best: I'm emotionally & financially stable and in a loving relationship with my best friend.
Worst: Most of my friends have children in high school or college.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you?
My husband & I got married (in wedding gown, suits & dresses) in the middle of the desert with a few family & friends in tow. Best day ever!

Age: 38

FTM/STM+: this will be my 4th (5th pregnancy). I was not AMA for my first 2 pregnancies (the first ended in a loss), but have been for the last 3.

Best: I'm having my babies on my schedule.

Worst: Sooooo tiirrreed

GTKY: I started sewing on my last May leave and love it. I can't wait to get started on stuff for this one, but kinda hope it's a girl because there are so many adorable patterns for girls and so few for boys.

2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA?: This will be my 5th pregnancy and I three living children. I had my first when I was 30. My third baby was born a month after I turned 35. So technically I was considered AMA for some of my third pregnancy.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? I'm more mature than I was in my early 20's. I don't know if that really matters though lol. I'm a bit worried about the increased risk for birth defects.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you? I am a yarn hoarder. I sometimes go through it to remind myself that I do not need any more yarn.

About additional testing: We are going ahead and doing the Progenity testing. It's just done from your blood and it screens for several genetic markers. It can also tell you if the baby is a boy or girl. They can run the test at 10 weeks, and patients usually find out the results within two weeks. I read that it is a bit more accurate than the Quad screening. However, insurance may not pay for the testing. Mine does not, but the test is $100 out-of-pocket. We were team green when we had the boys, but we are finding out this time. ++++TW++++ we lost our last at 9 weeks and I hate not knowing if it was a boy or girl. This time we are finding out (if I make it that long). I just want to know this baby as long as possible in case something goes wrong +++++end TW++++

2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? This is baby number 4, first AMA.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? I hate how at a certain age they label you as "at risk." It's kind of like drinking milk one day past the due date...Is it really that different? I suppose a bonus would be extra reassurance with ultrasounds and appointments.

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you? Me and my family made it on an episode of "Funniest Home Videos" when Bob Saget was the host!

@aims76 many of my friends have kids that graduated from high school this year. I also have a friend that is two years older than me that became a grandmother this February. I do have one friend that didn't start her family until she was 38 so I don't feel so alone lol.

@loganjsmommy1978 I'm also an identical twin! My sister had her two boys when she was 31 and 33, both totally great pregnancies and births...no issues conceiving, no losses...so I am now trying to play catch up after just getting married at 34, I have a 2 year old DD, not so amazing pregnancy and birth, then TW* an ectopic* so hoping this one will be a smooth pregnancy and birth..,so hard not to compare with your identical twin right?!

We have such similar stories it's eerie. 3 boys, 4th lost at 9w, I turned 35 a month after my 3rd not before. Team green for all Abdul finding out early this time.

Guys, this is kind of a twatwaffle post, but definitely AMA. I'm really just looking for a place to whine, so thanks for listening.

We're telling MIL at about 11 weeks because she's coming to visit and I'm nervous about how it's going to go. She's a great lady and great with DS, but she has a way of saying really effed up stuff. When I was pregnant with DS, we were chatting about whether or not we'd be one and done or if we'd try for a second. Basically she said we were probably one and done because of my age and she wouldn't be comfortable with me having another if I were over 35. I'm 36 now. That caused a big fight then and I'm just praying that her joy over another grandchild trumps any stupid thing she might feel she needs to say about my age.

Ugh that is so annoying. There is nothing wrong with having a baby over 35! It isn't like you go off a cliff then, that isn't just the age where the slow balance of risk balance shifts

my in laws are visiting now, and they are assholes lol. We don't see them much so probably will tell them. They thought having number 3 was a bad idea and told dh as much so just imagine their reaction to 4. Sil is going through a divorce and long story short they aren't doing a great job without their son. Mil keeps telling dh how glad she is that we are doing so well with the boys, even though they've always been jerks to him in the past. I told him that when they say that again, that's our opening... oh I'm glad you think that, because guess what! Lolololol

We have been planning a large family from our first weeks of dating, and have been very open with wanting 4 or 5 kids with everyone. When we told my in-laws we were preganant with our third we got uniformly terrible responses. MIL'd only comment was "I wish you hadn't done that".

They caught me off guard because who speaks that way about a very desired pregnancy. I'm already preparing my responses for when we tell them we're preganant with our 4th. My current planned response is (surprise face) "Oh, that's not an appropriate response to a pregnancy announcement. I think you used your inside voice on the outside. Embarrassing"

I have a couple of weeks to work on it. Suggestions welcome.

i am sorry to hear that this experience seems so common.

3. Best & worst thing about being AMA? Ummm... seeing as this is my first, I am notsure, but for now I will say the worst thing about being "AMA" is being considered and AMA. LOL!

"Advanced Maternal Age"... Sounds soooo cryptic and dogmatic to me. And yet, I don't feel a day over 25. Go figure! But I don't plan for the party to stop here. Lord willing, we will try for baby #2 about 9 months (or so) after the first. **fingers crossed**

4. GTKY: What's a random fun fact about you? Hmmm... Let's see. I am addicted to CNN (maybe not so fun) and although I am not a fan of dirt OR bugs, I just adopted a new gardening fetish. Lol.

That is awesome. Mine will fake itto my face at least. If we ever get a chance to tell them..l they seem to have zero interest in interacting with us without the kids, and Henry and Isaac are old enough to understand and we won't tell them yet.

Im extra annoyed right now bc we worked to get the house clean and even hired a cleaning lady - with my exhaustion and nausea I couldn't declutter and clean annnnnd get along the floors and bathrooms and everything all done all at once. Fil is phobic about bare feet and his OCD kicks in, so they will NEVER take shoes off. Rude, but ok. If they were considerate people they'd bring house shoes to wear but they aren't, we just were outside and it's been wet. So everyone's shoes are wet and dirtying. Kids take the money off, as do dh and I, and I'm trying to be very vocal about not dirty feet. Yeah. They didn't no even WIPE THEIR FEET on the mat.

Soooo mad. I'm telling dh next time we will save the cleaning lady to clean up after them.

I felt the same way. I didn't want to say anything in light of what happened to her. I feel terrible. I'm not in the getting busy group, but that sounds like a ton of fun.
