This is a place for those of us who have already started TTC, but have started infertility testing and/or treatments. You can express your thoughts, feelings, and frustrations on infertility. TTC can be a long journey naturally, then add in the difficulties associated with infertility and it becomes a whole new ball game. The road to infertility can be lonely, frustrating, and complicated, so let's make this a place where we can vent, ask questions, and support one another. Wow, it's quiet this morning!

Diagnosis (If you've been): PCOM, high prolactin, fragile x carrier

Cycle/CD: month 19, CD 22

Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): TWW

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) I have been taking cabergoline to try and lower the prolactin and trying to eat well and exercise to hopefully drop a few pounds.

How are things going? They're going okay. The cabergoline hasn't been too bad. I'm nauseous the day after I take it, but not too bad. Being strict with the diet has been rough considering it's the summer and there's so many get together!

Diagnosis (If you've been): MFI and borderline DOR (in my opinion)

Cycle/CD: 14 / 12

Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): WTO

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) just finished testing. Had my HSG on Friday, and my tubes were clear. Between the 4 hour drive to the hospital, the test, lunch, and the 4 hour drive back, it was an 11 hour day. I ended up going alone, and was glad I did since I had minimal discomfort during the HSG, and not much cramping afterward, which was great.

Also, I spoke with my RE briefly about my blood work results, and I'm slightly concerned about the fact that he's relatively unconcerned that my AMH is 1.1 and FSH 8.4. He just shrugged and said that those levels are reasonable and "it just means that we don't have 3 or 4 years," meaning we don't have 3 or 4 years to wait to get KU. No sh*t Sherlock. Anywho, I sent him a message today about the IUI vs IVF decision because at this point DH and I aren't convinced that IUI is worth our time or money. I'm also not sure we'll stay with this RE, but it doesn't hurt to get his opinion.

How are things going? Eh, better today than a couple days ago. On my 4 hour drive home on Friday I had a bit of a breakdown trying to wrap my head around all of the decisions that DH and I will be making, and the fact that we have to make them in the first place.

Also, It Starts With The Egg arrives in the mail today, so I'm excited to delve in and start making some changes that can *hopefully* improve my AMH, egg quality, and hopefully even DH's sperm quality. I haven't discussed this with DH or our RE, but I'm thinking that if we do IVF (or even medicated IUI) we should wait 3-4 months so that the changes we'll be making to improve egg quality and sperm quality will have taken effect. If it gives us a better outcome it's worth the wait.

Any questions? I don't think there's ever any perfect, easy answer to the IUI vs IVF question. But if you happen to have any pearls of wisdom please share!

@lund I would have gladly skipped the iui's in retrospect. But my husband really needed to take baby steps. He needed to say, "we're not infertile, we just need a little help." Then each cycle it was just little more help.

How are things going? Good, I'm trying to be healthier again. After all the shit I ate and drank this weekend, I wouldn't blame my egg for not wanting to implant itself this month

That is actual footage of me excited/freaking out. So much of our future depends on what they do/do not find, and it's Like, no pressure. Even the scheduling lady I feel like doesn't get it. Like ya okay we get his bloodwork, we figure out our OOP cost okay good good. That's the easy stuff!!! We still maybe have a 50/50 shot they find anything and I feel like she was missing that point when I last spoke to her. But whtvr. Gotta hope for the best!!!

@lund We only did one IUI and I felt like we were just doing it to check it off the list. We had planned to do 3 but we had to cancel two of the cycles bc for one I ovulated early and the other I was monitoring myself and missed O - I'm still bitter about that. After the one where I O'd really early my doctor said we were wasting our time and advised we go straight to IVF. IUI is much less invasive and you don't have to take as much medication so I think its worth a try but IVF has a much better success rate. Its certainly worth the discussion.

How are things going? fine. I'm glad to have some progress this cycle with the testing and we will likely be scheduling some meetings with the dr and social worker. It's moving along perfectly.

@lund clear tubes! Glad to hear the HSG went ok. Before we found out IUI wasn't an option for us, our RE was going to have us do that first. Both because it seems alot less intense and the insurance mandates in our states required at least 3 cycles of IUI before going for IVF. So no personal experience on either out of me but I really like/trust our RE and he seemed to think starting with IUI was a good first step.

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) We have our initial consult with the MFI urologist next Monday. So have just been doing alot of mental prep & making sure I know exactly what to ask etc. This poor Dr. has no idea that I am coming in guns blazing.

How are things going? Actually pretty good! I had a great weekend and have been trying really hard to stay positive and that seems to be helping. Bad days spring up of course but I would say majority I've been feeling ok

@lund My RE would probably say the sky is falling if those were my numbers (and actually, my AMH is significantly lower, and I'm 10 years older, sooooo....). I'm guessing the truth lies somewhere between. It so sucks that you don't have an easy, close second opinion to get. FWIW, I think you're right to assume DOR, and whatever protocol you decide to pursue, I think you're right to make the changes in ISWTE and give it at least 3 months. You may even see that those changes move your AMH to the low side of normal for your age.

ETA: @laurad75 I'm so excited you are moving forward!! And that trip sounds amazing.

What are you doing: My first IUI using OH's frozen sperm, as well as an additional home insemination, also using OH's frozen sperm

How's it going: Well, I'm trying not to freak the fuck out about the timing of this thing. It's looking like we'll do it Thursday, maybe even Wednesday. I need to talk to my midwife about details, including whether she thinks I should do the at home insemination before or after the IUI. I'm thinking before, but who knows?

OH is trying to change our sperm army pick up from today to Wednesday, since I'm guessing I will O on Thursday. Since we won't have the Dewar tank (I had no idea that's what liquid nitrogen tanks were called until now) until probably later in the day, we'll do this cycle with dry ice. But it makes us both nervous to use dry ice each time because it isn't nearly as reliable. We also want to be prepared for cycles where a weekend IUI may be involved.

Any questions: Anyone have any experience working with liquid nitrogen or Dewars? Any tips? I think it will mostly be the RE's office and my midwife handling the vials, but I imagine I will have to for my at home inseminations, too. I did know enough to at least buy the gloves to protect my hands, but that's about all I know...

GTKY: OH is half Italian, and he has family in Italy. His mom, stepdad, and sister and BIL went last summer, and their pics were amazing. That is definitely our dream vacation. Stateside we also dream of hitting all the major national parks.

How are things going? Last week, all sorts of stress came to a head. I realized it when I said a mean comment to DH that I wanted to shove back in my mouth immediately. We've both been a little nervous and had some family drama, but things have settled down since then. I've been trying to do the BD with DH a bit more, since this whole journey really sucked the romance out of everything. DH's birthday is this week and we are both excited to end our week with the IVF orientation.

Any questions? Who do I have to stalk to get my BC prescription? (Rhetorical question.) They've been saying since APRIL that I'll need to start BC with my cycle this month and there's still no prescription in for me. I'm going back to the RE's office after physical therapy today.

@lund For me the tipping point between IUI and IVF would be finances and what my RE thought my fertility would look like a couple years from now when we wanted to try for a sibling. That also depends on how many you want to have. If you want more than one, I would ask my RE whether I should be "fertility planning" aka embryo banking and go from there. It is definitely not an easy decision!

lund That's a great book! I def think it helped me (though I'm still here, so I guess its only up to a point!) Is there some reason youre sticking with IUI's instead of hopping right into IVF?

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) Femera, Ovidrel, TI and Prometrium.

How are things going? Big storm hit us last Thursday and 75% of our town had no power for a few days.
DH ended up giving me my Ovidrel Saturday night (by candle light) because I had a positive OPK. I'm a little concerned because of my conversation with the nurse on Friday. She made me believe my follicles were too small to surge. But there was no missing this surge and I triggered to cover my ground and make sure both those follicles released to up my chances. It wasn't as bad as I was anticipating but they had me do it in my stomach so I wasn't expecting that.

Any questions? I had spotting 24 hours after my Ovidrel shot. Has anyone experienced that?

@Redpuma119 glad you haven't been having too many side effects from the cabergoline!

For us it's somewhat of a financial thing - we have $15,000 lifetime max infertility insurance coverage. So, if we widdle away at that with multiple IUIs we could potentially have to pay for more of IVF OOP. But of course if the IUIs work then we'd be ahead financially. Like most things TTC, it's a gamble and crapshoot.

@LeilaK9288 thanks for the advice! I think part of why this is so hard for me is the fact that I don't trust our RE. He's not dangerous-horrible, but I certainly don't take everything he says without a grain of salt. FX for YH's appointment on Monday! I always go into appointments guns blazing - you gotta advocate for yourself (and YH)!

@Aurora1973 Exactly! I know my DOR numbers aren't the worst they could be, but let's not kid ourselves and say that everything is fine. Do you mind me asking what your AMH/FSH was? I think part of my frustration this week is, like you said, that getting a 2nd opinion isn't an easy thing to do around here. I figure the least I can do in my situation is some ISWTE stuff, and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. And OMG your liquid nitrogen and Dewar tank stuff is insane! Hopefully the first insemination and IUI go perfectly and that you only have to do it this one cycle!

@BertieMeetsGertie yeah of course we always hope to have a perfectly clear treatment plan after testing, but in reality it just ends up being more questions and decisions. You have all of your blood work results, right? And just waiting on the SA?

@AlohaKumu sorry about all of the stress, but YAY IVF orientation! And yeah, driving 8 hours round trip seems ridiculous enough... it'll take me a while to wrap my head around anything more.

@saralee797-2 that is a great point that I'd forgotten about. DH and I will need to sit down and have a serious discussion about fertility planning, or if we'd be ok with OAD. And ooooooooooooooh so excited for you!!!

@zwink1 FX for YH's appointment this week! And luckily MH seems on board with skipping straight to IVF if it makes the most sense, but it is a big step.

@dragonette505 Good question! Essentially if, for some reason, my RE thought that IUI would still give us a good chance we may still consider it as it's less invasive and less expensive. But if the logical chances of IUI success are low and DH and I decide that we want more than one, we'll likely skip to IVF. I guess my question should be rephrased as "is there ANY reason we should try IUI first?" LOL. And Austria sounds divine! Diagnosis (If you've been): LPD

Cycle/CD: 11/2

Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): WTO

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) Appointment with OB at the end of the month to review last cycle's 6dpo progesterone level (4.6). Per RN plan is to take 200mg of prometrium nightly after O. Might request progesterone test for this cycle as well to see what the level is with the supplements.

How are things going? Eh, I'm excited about the prospect of moving forward, and doing something different, and maybe getting some answers. At the same time though it's upsetting that this is where we are. For a long time DH and I didn't want kids ever so it definitely feels like karma is being a B.

@mispanda I've never heard of spotting after triggering but if it was just a little maybe its not a big deal? Id mention it to a nurse anyway.

@lund I skipped IUI altogether (although my doc at the time totally thought I should try it) But I feel like its pretty clear I was right to jump right in. I guess go with your gut. My gut told me I needed to go right in with the big guns and I didn't want to waste time playing with iui. I know for some it works, but since I am the problem not DH and he has no issues inseminating me himself (ewwwww lol! sorry tmi!) I decided to try to grab up as many eggs as possible so it was IVF.

@KariAnn323 Don't beat yourself up because you didn't want kids before. It wouldn't have been good to have kids back when you didn't want them. I beat myself up all the time for my choices, but I've been trying to be rational and realize it is not helping to do it. I'm so glad you have an appointment and hopefully you will get some guidance.

@lund I'm so sorry you had a breakdown and that your RE isn't the best. I don't have much insight on the IUI vs. IVF question since I'm kind of trying to figure that one out myself. We did go with IUI first since we're unexplained but I could see how going straight to IVF might benefit you both with saving time and money.

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) AF is due on Wednesday so we'll see. If this cycle is a bust then we have one more IUI cycle before I have to make a decision about surgery to check for endometriosis or moving straight to IVF.

How are things going? Not too bad. I don't feel any differently than usual so I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Treading that fine line between staying optimistic but not being too optimistic.

@lund I don't mind at all!!! My AMH is .356 and my FSH on CD3 was 8.0. I suppose for me the only good news is that my FSH is the very high side of normal instead of really elevated. But my AMH is pretty abysmal. I have orders at the lab for retesting AMH to see if I improved it any (it was taken last August, and I've made lots of ISWTE changes), but we've had some vehicle issues and OH has been chaffeuring me to work. Also, I'm scared that there won't be an improvement, or that it will even be worse. Things change fast at 43. Also:

@Aurora1973 yeah I guess the good news for you is that your FSH number is pretty great compared to the AMH - it's even better than mine! Was your estrodiol elevated? And, AMAZING gif choice for the situation! Bravocado! FX that (when you do go in for the BW) your AMH has improved

@lund No, my estrodiol was taken 7DPO of the previous cycle and was 198, which I think for mid-luteal is middle of the road. And thanks! GIFs are fun

@Aurora1973 I hear you about not wanting to get another AMH test. I've switched docs and I'm so happy my last years (better!) AMH level will not have to be repeated (yet!) Its just one less thing to worry about. But if I for some reason get pushed out past August, I'll have to take it again

@shortstack930 do you think you would move to IVF after the surgery? How many months might you give it? For what it's worth my Dr was not concerned that the endometriosis would impact IVF. If that is your only issue it's probably worth the surgery, otherwise it might be a better use of time to go straight to IVF. Obviously it's a big step emotionally and financially. Is it your RE recommending surgery?

@lund I agree with @tamalahoops skipping the IUI might be more worth your time. Fortunately my H was ready to do whatever I was comfortable with. I've done some of the things in the book and probably could've done more but I was concerned it wouldn't make much difference.

@lund I am sorry your doctor doesn't seem to be taking your concerns seriously. I will say different labs have different reference ranges, and that can be based on how they run the test, so mayyyyyyybe their reference ranges are different than the classics you find online, but thats a serious maybe, lol. Hoping if you do switch you find someone you like!

I traveled with my fertility meds once and had no problems. My bag got stopped when it went through security and I told the guard what I was carrying. I also had a note from my doctor but she didn't ask to see it. I also had some meds on ice and there were no issues using hard ice packs.
