Re: Bottle & Formula Feeding Tips/Tricks/Questions

  • @disneybaby84 @JustAnotherUsername16 are they super anxious when they are trying? Babies can pick up on that stuff. Otherwise I know they were mentioning letting babies sleeping on a blanket or shirt that smells like you in another thread.. maybe that would work here too?

  • If I go to bed early and leave DH to give baby a bottle, baby will become the fussiest baby, won't sleep and take well over an hour to eat bottle. Two nights ago he wouldn't sleep, DH brings baby in bedroom, I had baby fast asleep in five minutes. Last night, he brings him in, wouldn't eat, I had baby happily sucking down the bottle in no time. What can we do for daddy and baby?
This is so normal for all babies. I mean, baby literally lived inside you for the better part of a year. You are his home. I'd mostly counsel dad to keep trying but not to let the preference ruffle him or hurt his feel8mgs. Also I know you know this already, but I had to remind myself a lot that just because my husband does something different than I do its not necessarily wrong. I found I was inadvertently sabotaging his confidence by correcting him all the time and rescuing baby.

  • last night baby didn't give daddy as much trouble and ate a bottle off him!  persevere @JustAnotherUsername16!
However just now he gave me trouble and had to bust out gripe water.   :/. Hoping he will eat better the rest of today.
  • Was so excited about the Baby Brezza...But I'm going to take it back. First formula that DS did fine on we used it and he got constipated. So we were using it as a water heater until we found another formula... Finally started using it again yesterday and there isn't near enough formula in it. I can visually see the difference between a handmade one and one from the maker. We could measure and manually switch the setting number it's on, but I just don't trust it at this point. Going back to our Dr. Brown's formula pitcher.

  • Figured out my fussy baby problems. Ran out of Enfamil Gentleease a few days, made an angry baby with other formulas. Feeling bad he hasn't been eating well, now starts a happy eating baby.
  • Hi ladies, wanted to bump up this thread since I'm transitioning to formula feeding now due to a low supply I wasn't able to overcome (not for lack of trying!).

How do you deal with growth spurts when on formula? I'm still BF here and there, but he's not getting much from me. He seems like he wants to eat more than the pediatrician recommended, and they did say that as long as he doesn't puke it up, he's not getting too much. He seems still hungry after a feed so last night we gave him an extra oz. Especially after he will sleep 5 hrs, the next feeding he seems like he needs to eat more. I need to ask the pedi for clearer info at our next check up, but how are you guys going about increasing how much they eat as they grow and dealing with hungry times? Do you make up a small bottle when they seem like they are rooting around and hungry an hour after feeding? Or try to just feed more at feeding times? He's gaining perfectly so I'm not worried but don't want to overfeed him and upset his stomach either. He's over 10lbs at this point.
  • @jenny0228 when my three root around in between feedings I offer them boob. If they do it right after a feeding I put a little more in their bottle. If they do it two feedings in a row I increase what they get by 5mLs. If they try to eat early two feedings in a row I'll also increase by 5mLs. I've noticed now that they're sleeping longer at night they tend to want to eat earlier during the day.

@jenny0228 I agree with what @AandDM2014 said. I have low supply, too but have chosen to keep breastfeeding and pumping. Right now one twin takes 5-6 oz a feeding and the other generally will take 3-4. They're 9 weeks old.

I asked my pedi if I need to be careful with what they eat (bigger twin always had a bigger appetite, well beyond recommended amount of ounces) and she said if they're not spitting up it's ok.

I think both are going through a growth spurt now, so I have been offering their normal amounts, burping, offering the breast, and if they're still hungry I'll mix up an additional ounce (usually they won't take the whole additional ounce). This last feeding the smaller twin was fussy while taking his normal 4 ounces and he only took 3.5 ounces. He then proceeded to scream through his normal nap time, so I offered him another 2 ounces which he downed and then passed out.

This has been a lot of trial and error (mostly error haha).

  • Thanks @AandDM2014 and @direwolfmini - helps a lot to hear what you are doing. I've been offering boob as well in between when he is extra fussy, and have needed to mix up an extra oz here and there as he is gaining steadily. Sounds like trial and error is the best way to go. I was worried about overfeeding but sounds like you're getting the same advice- as long as they don't puke it up it's ok. My little guy is a hungry hippo!

@direwolfmini kudos to you mama for continuing to pump, and you've got two mouths to feed! I had to let the pumping go- just couldn't keep up the routine and wasn't getting any increase. I still get a small amount by letting him breast feed when he shows interest. You're doing so great!!!
  • @direwolfmini I'm sorry to hear that you have low supply. How much do you pump a day? Have you noticed a difference with breastfeeding as well? I noticed that the more I breastfeed the less I pump, but they still take the same amount from the bottle. Grr!

  • @jenny0228 I follow the baby's lead. We supplement pumped milk with formula due to low supply. If he seems like he is still hungry after a feed twice in a row, I increase his bottles by a half ounce. He's always had a really strong appetite and seems to eat more than what is usually recommended, or more often than what the bottles should hold him. At first I was worried about over feeding him, but his pediatrician said that as long as he is not puking after he eats, he isn't overeating. Occasionally he won't take the full bottle, but when he is full he lets me know by shutting his mouth. He is about to be 8 weeks old, eats 6 oz per feeding and usually eats 6x/day.

  • @AandDM2014 I can pump up to 16oz a day, for the last couple weeks I've been consistently pumping about 15 oz per day. I generally nurse a couple times a day too, so I would guess I make about 20oz max per day? It wouldn't be so bad if I had a singleton, my little guy eats about 24 oz a day and the big guy eats about 32 oz per day. 15 oz is about 1/4 of their collective needs...

I had heard your supply can increase even up to 6 weeks after your 40week due date. I thought that seemed illogical, but I actually did see an increase over the last two weeks. They're 10 weeks actual 4 weeks adjusted right now. Maybe I can get another couple of oz per day? Regardless, we have a routine that works. They generally eat 6x a day and I pump after every feed unless I can tell that they drained my breasts completely when nursing.

I definitely get less pumping after they nurse, but they seem to eat the same amount of ounces from their bottles: so frustrating!!! We did one weighted feed at 1 month old and the little guy transfers almost nothing without a nipple shield (2ml...) big guy transferred 40 ml. With the shield I know that the little guy transfers but I don't know how much.

TBH the last weeks have been a bit of a blur bc they're clearly in a growth spurt and have been eating nonstop. Big guy had 40oz yesterday!!!
  • @direwolfmini hmm. That is a predicament. I can totally see being frustrated with that amount with two mouths to feed. I hadn't heard that supply could increase up until 6 weeks after 40. I thought it was 6 weeks after they were born. If it's after 40 then I still have almost 6 weeks to go with mine. I'm glad you have a routine down.
The last time I went to a LC appointment we did weighted feeds where total they got 75mLs out and she actually told me that I didn't have to pump if they all fed... like that isn't nearly how much I get from pumping, so yeah I'm going to pump if they're only getting that much.
Woah, I'm sorry to see that your little one transfers so little. My big one refuses to latch without a shield but I kinda don't mind as it protects my nipple from them a little bit. Is he transferring that amount on a fresh breast? Maybe he'll get better with more practice? My crazy LC thinks I have nothing else to do but breastfeed babies... yeah no! Weighted feeds have let me know that we need to supplement after each one, but even when they get 25mLs they'll still take their entire bottle. So weird.
