Re: Weekly Randoms 6/12

  • @ElizabethSchuyler I remember taking DS1 when he was about 2ish, but for the others, I've always taken them! I don't want my older kids to miss out on movies because any of others are "too little" and it's really hard for us to get sitters. DS3 (10 months old now) has been to 3-4 movies already. We usually go to a really cool theater near us that serves dinner during the movie. It's fun and it gives all the kids something to do while watching the movies, plus they have high chairs!

  • Not sure if I have food poisoning ( i knew after 4-5 pieces that the pineapple had gone bad and tossed the rest) , the stomach flu (I've been pretty turned off by food for a few days) or heat stroke (so lethargic, heat flashes and cold spells)  but whatever it is, it's gotta go.
Waiting on my midwife to call me back and tell me what to do.
  • @ElizabethSchuyler I say go for it!
@am+mommy hope you had a safe flight! Enjoy your time with DH and your pups!
@cmessamore that sounds like the best movie theatre. The ones in India are like that but if you want it here you have to go to VIP which is only for 19+
  • @kissthesky32 we'll check our suitcase but I'll have a carry on with games, snacks, etc.

@ElizabethSchuyler DS is 2 1/2 and I think we're taking him to see Cars as his first movie. I'm depending a lot on the power of snacks

@ElizabethSchuylerif he can sit through a movie at home he will likely do so at the theatre.  I think it's more dependant on attention span which can occur at different ages in different kids.  For DS1 it was a 3.  For DS2 we tried a 3 and he was pretty good but wanted to leave in the middle to wander for a bit.  We took them to see Boss Baby (he's now 3.5) and he was awesome!

  • @ElizabethSchuyler - We took DS for his third birthday.  Another mom in my J14 group had said that they did that as a special birthday treat for each kid on their third birthday.  One of our local theaters does a special screening on Tuesdays that was started primarily for children with sensory disorders but is open to everybody.  It's not as loud, the lights are only out halfway, and nobody is allowed to complain if kids are out of their seats or talking or whatever.  You don't get to pick the movie, but they generally show whatever new popular kid movie is out.  DS loved it and managed to stay in his seat until about 80% through(Moana), but it was nice knowing that when he did get out and needed to stretch a little, we weren't bothering anybody.  It was a good trial run!

  • @kschref maybe others feel differently but I'd definitely rather have something that is like melted ice pops than maple syrup. Though UO, I hate maple syrup, it makes me cringe with how sweet it is. You'll have to let us know how it goes!

  • When is the GD test typically?  My OB hasn't said anything about it yet.

Also, I don't think I could drink anything with molasses.  That sounds thick and awful.

DS1 is 7.  DD is 1.  DS2 is coming in late April.

  • @ElizabethSchuyler We took DD1 for the first time right before DD2s arrival as a special attention treat. She was about 3 1/2. She's a very hyper child so she was happy and behaved until her popcorn and soda started boring her. Towards the end she was hopping from seat to seat and at the very end of the movie (last 10 minutes) she ran up to the screen and started dancing. Everyone thought it was hilarious but we did not. We haven't taken her to the movies since lol. She's 5 next week so we'll probably try again soon.
  • @DuchessOfCambridge - Yeah, I'm not sure how I'll handle it.  I use maple syrup as an alternative sweetener in cooking occasionally, but I don't really use syrup even on pancakes, etc.  In the paperwork I read where she described why she was doing it, she basically said that many women over the years had complained to her about some of the ingredients in some of these drinks (My office doesn't have one with artificial colors, but I know some do).  I personally have never had an issue with it other than I have to work really hard not to be sick before they can do the blood draw, haha, but I don't expect this will be any easier to keep down given the sweetness.  I'll be interested to see if I end up with the same numbers as I still get to do the glucose drink anyway for comparison.

  • A maple syrup and molasses drink (could you even drink that? I feel like I would need a spoon?) sounds like the stuff of nightmares.

  • @BayCamp. They make roller things to attach the carseat to so you can roll it through the airport and then you can just strap DS into the carseat and roll him right along with it. I've checked my carseat in twice and it was a pain in the butt dragging it along with my luggage and DS just to the check in area. I can't imagine dragging everything through the entire airport.
  • @mariposa_767s 24-28 weeks!

  • @kschref Do you have to drink the molasses in under 3 minutes like the glucose drink?

  • @ElizabethSchuyler - It says within 5-10 minutes of first sip - but the glucose drink they give me says the same thing.  It's 4oz of straight maple syrup/molasses though - yikes!  The glucose drink is 10oz, but I know they add water to it so I'm sure it goes down way easier.

  • @kschref maybe it's not a drink? Maybe it's a maple candy. Those things are delicious.
  • @jess0211 - Thank you!  We did go over everything in detail and I do have copies of everything, including the consent form.  She does have ethics approval - this has been a long time in the making and she's worked hard to make sure everything is done correctly.  I'm definitely paranoid about things during pregnancy and were it anything very different, I likely would not participate.  I'm scheduled to drink it and have my blood draw on July 13th and I feel totally comfortable changing my mind before then if I start to feel any differently.  :)

  • @kschref good to hear!!!!! I love participating in studies but bc of my job I probably make the most obnoxious study participant. Haha

On another note, good article about products claiming to reduce risk of SIDS

  • @baycamp I have flown with DD2 alone SO many times and it always sucks. I never bring a car seat (we always fly to my hometown where my in laws have car seats to pick us up in) I bring an umbrella stroller and throw our carry on right over the handles so I carry nothing. And you can check the stroller right before you get on the plane. (Usually you can board with the wheelchair group too since they understand toddlers are a huge pain. The first time I flew her (4mo)  I brought an infant car seat/ stroller combo and you can check both right at the gate. Then you don't need to carrying anything then either. I can't imagine doing it any other way....
  • @jess0211 can we have a medical studies related to pregnancy and babies thread? I love reading them! Just read one last week about how fetuses recognize faces in the womb. (That's a loose summary of what it was about)

  • @DuchessOfCambridge sure! I can start one when I get home tonight or feel free to start it!

  • Sigh, I was nominated for chair elect of a committee at work and normally I'd jump on it but I am ready to take a step back from some of my commitments and I really don't see myself working well with the chair. Andplusalso I'd be out for 3 months of my term and I am already on other committees. I feel guilty and worried how it will look if I decline but I just am not feeling it.

  • My midwife practice doesn't do the sugary drink. They give you a specific breakfast to eat that morning (a certain amount of sugar, carbs, and protein balance) and then you go in for a blood draw.

@am+mommy that's what we typically do, but this time I'll need his car seat when we get there since we are flying to meet my mom and then driving to my hometown. I'm also hoping that if he's restrained he might sit still better. He's great in his car seat but terrible at sitting in a regular seat for long periods of time.
  • @BayCamp that's really cool. I've never heard of that before. My midwife and I left it at we will discuss it again when I see her and if I choose to do it I can. I wonder how they do it.  Also fyi about the car seat thing. Not sure how valid this is but a mom on one of my groups mentioned that if your plane experiences turbulence you may have to replace your car seat. Not sure if they sways you either way with the to buy or not to buy a "cheap" carseats for the trip.
  • Maple syrup and molasses sounds disgusting, I would have a hard time with that. I can do syrup
on pancakes or waffles but that's it. I tried a maple donut once and had to throw it away after one bite, it was so bad.

I like the breakfast idea. I always wonder why the drink can't be something yummy like a chocolate milkshake. The point is that it's sugary, right?

  • @baycamp I love when ds1 wants to sleep in our bed because he is the BEST snuggler. Lol! DH always ruins the fun and makes him go back to his bed, though.

@kschref I would be really nervous about the prospect of getting that much maple syrup/molasses down. My DH on the other had would be pumped. We went to VT and bought a bunch of fresh made maple syrup and he would drink it straight from the bottle like buddy the elf.

  • Not sure where to post this but did anyone else have an AS where they couldn't tell the sex? Baby was being shy, the tech took a guess but told us not to paint a nursery or buy clothes based on it. Not sure how we're going to find out now since that was our last u/s of the pregnancy.

It hasn't happened to me, but I've heard of it happening to others. If you really want to know, there are elective ultrasound places that you can go to. Try searching "gender ultrasound" and your ZIP Code to find places.

  • @kissthesky32 Thanks. I'll try that. We have to find a name that works in Iceland and US so would be nice to just have to decide on one instead of two.
  • @ames011 Yes, elective ultrasound. I'm sorry for your predicament since you are wanting to know but I'm really crossing my fingers this happens to me. I agreed to let my husband find out the gender and surprise me after, but we also agreed if they can't tell we won't try again to find out. I would love to be Team Green again.

It's what I would do. Now that we've decided to find out, I HAVE to know. We've been Team agreement before and loved it, but I just want to know this time.

  • @slaven welcome home! Glad your flight and everything went smoothly.
@DuchessOfCambridge my leggings don't fit and I didn't even think that was a thing that could happen

@DuchessOfCambridge I've been wearing leggings and workout shorts/elastic shorts since 10 or 12 weeks haha. I'm making DH take me to Target today b/c I don't like driving my FILs truck and we can't pick up our new Jeep until tomorrow AND we're having a family party this weekend that I want something cute for.
