I would try to time naps with the drive, but S hates the car and is one of the few babies I know that doesn't just fall asleep when in the car. So, if we do a nap at the beach, how does that work? Do I hold her? Take something to put her in?
Lay a blanket or towel out under and umbrella, sit near by and enjoy the peace and quiet. I recommend stripping LO to the diaper on a hot day too - it's more comfortable for them.
We live in NY and used to go to Long Island for weekend beach trips. But the ocean is very cold I think, do you ladies think the LOs can go into the cold water ? I love swimming and spending time at the beach but I am not so sure if it is worth to drive around 1 hr back and forth with the baby

We live in Jersey and the water wasn't warm enough for LO to want to enjoy swimming until close to August. I think it's all a matter of what LO likes.
I grew up going to the Jersey shore every summer. I miss the Atlantic waters. The Pacific waters up north here are way too cold. You actually dress in layers to go to the beach, a very foreign concept to me. I definitely miss the Jersey shore. We did take our first for a visit before she was 1 to Ocean City, NJ and she took a nap on the beach under the umbrella and splashed in the shallow part of the waves. It was June 1st, so not too warm in the water yet, but she had a blast.
I'm using the Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby on S. I haven't been putting it on her face since I normally put a hat on her. But I'm going to start putting her under water so the hat doesn't make sense. It says tear free but I'm wondering if I need to get one specifically for the face or is that just a marketing ploy to get more of my money lol.
What is the best option for bug spray?! So clueless.
My doc said anything with deet. I ask if that was safe and she said mostly yes, just careful on the face and hands. She said normally she wouldn't be pushing it on babies this young but we live in a Zika area and she said they know so little about how Zika affects infants that deet is a better option.
The CDC recommended a few DEET alternatives if you don't feel comfortable with it. We use DEET when we go out during peak mosquito times though.
"EPA characterizes the active ingredients DEET and picaridin as “conventional repellents” and OLE, PMD, and IR3535 as “biopesticide repellents,” which are either derived from or are synthetic versions of natural materials."
What's the best time of day to take LO to the pool? It isn't heated and it gets in the 50s/low 60s at night right now but then is going to be 90 this weekend. I want to take him when the water is warm enough but yet not full baking sun/heat.
Thanks we have that same float. My parents pool has a cover but my neighborhood isn't heated. I might just wait for their house bc I'm not sure I can navigate baby and pool myself until he can sit up and I can briefly set him somewhere
@kvruns that is the issue I had when I took LO swimming the other day at the indoor pool. Thankfully they had these little seats that you can strap LO to while changing. If they didn't have that I have no idea how I would have done it.

I thought if I go i could bring his bumbo since it's no big deal if it gets wet. I just don't want s wet car seat or stroller
@kvruns We go mid afternoon. But I'm in FL so it's super hot. I just take the stroller and wrap her in a towel before sitting her down. It actually doesn't get wet.
It's still nippy in Jersey but in the past, at the outdoor pool, we just changed LO on the towel. I went with ODD a lot by myself so everything was layered by priority in a backpack and I'd carry her in. Once school is out I'll be hitting the pool and beach with both kids solo and have the same plan only older one walks.
He didn't wear them too long. He sometimes wears them but if he's tired and rubs his eyes they come off. Today he was pulling on them and his hat so I took them off (but hat stayed on)
It's FINALLY summer here and we took LO to the outdoor pool this afternoon. He was so awesome about everything and even tried to blow bubbles after I did! Tomorrow we're heading to the beach as a family and I realized I am unprepared in one aspect, so I need STMs and all creative ladies here: how do I accommodate my 3 yo and the potty? There's one 3 blocks away but we are not traveling 3 blocks for her 15 second pees a hundred times tomorrow.
Full disclosure, (try not to judge me too hard) I come from the beach world - grew up on it and lifeguarded there. And whether I was 8 or 18 I was told to go in the ocean. That's right, my boss, the 40 something head lifeguard, instructed us to use the ocean. So I'm not grossed out or dismayed by people going in the water (because odds are someone is), but my much more conservative husband truly believes people don't go to the bathroom in the ocean so it's not an option for ODD.
@SandNStarsNJ I was thinking a potty chair, but then you'd have to carry it out. You could block her with a towel while she used the chair. But maybe that's too much work/awkward/what'd you do with the pee...
@SandNStarsNJ I have no advice but it makes me laugh because I can't pee in the ocean (or lake or anything). Even if it hurts because I have to go so bad I just can't do it even if I try.
@SandNStarsNJ I'm not much of a beach person (I don't care for being in the ocean and there's also no sand beaches around me- just rocks with frigid cold Atlantic Ocean) but if I'm in vacation and happen to be on a beach and have to pee I'm totally that person that walks out waste deep and heads back in. Whoops. Water moves enough so I think it's fine. pools - no go. Though I do have a friend who recently admitted she pees in pools. Ew.
@SandNStarsNJ Your husband is very naive if he thinks people don't pee in the ocean lol
I'm a Florida native and EVERYONE pees in the ocean if they have to go. Hell, if my husband has to poop while he's out fishing he hangs his butt over the side and goes. Obviously not near shore but still.
If she's willing to go in the ocean I'd just do that. The problem is she may not be willing or able to do it.
Another ocean pee-er here! Fish poop in the ocean so I see no problem with humans peeing there - especially a kid who would be going a hundred times anyway.
Animals poop and pee in the ocean...and to be honest there's much more disgusting things in there. So I'd say pee away! You could bring a potty and let her pee on there and empty it ever so often. A lot of work for tiny pees as there's an ocean full of pee
Totally pee in the ocean! If I were you I would just discreetly take her to play in the water and not say anything to your H about anything else that might be taking place lol
Not sure if everyone has made it to the randoms thread, so I thought I would post here. I have sent out invites to our private group, check your inboxes.
I think I would explode before I pooped in the ocean. But I'm also bowel shy. I can't go in anyone else's house or public. I had to go a weekend camping trip for my degree and it was a long hike into the woods and camp with what's on your back. Needless to say I didn't feel too good when I came home. I also only drank a litre of water the whole time because it's all I brought in with me and I refused to drink pond water (even after it was boiled). I'm clearly a priss.

LO took her first dip in the pool on Monday and she looooved it! Fuzzy photo - this is a screenshot from video my mom was taking.
I am a mosquito. freaking. MAGNET. Like, bad bad bad! During pregnancy I used this -
https://www.amazon.com/All-Terrain-DEET-Free-Natural-Repellent/dp/B00AAA9DS0
and it was actually great!
