  • Nora is 25 weeks today, will be 6 months on the 26th. I'm going to give BLW a try. Gave her sticks of toast and some scrambled eggs this morning on her high chair tray. She just played with them. I tried to model taking little bites off them, but she just kept playing. Been trying to get her to drink from a sippy cup too, but no interest yet. I'll just keep offering appropriate sized pieces of what we are eating and maybe she'll eat something eventually. If she just plays with it, thats more for the dog ;) Daycare hasn't pressured us to send baby food for her yet, so we'll cross that bridge when/if we get to it.

  • @anne11716 I would only give water if LO was constipated. Or maybe if they were really heavy and eating for comfort and not really needing the extra calories. If my baby was on the skinny side I'd pass on water so that they got all the calories they could with milk.

Didn't do water until 1 last time and am planning the same this time.

My pedi said it's ok to give water. I gave S a sippy cup about a month ago, mostly just for practice. She puts it to her mouth but gets very little water. So I think right now it's more so just to get them used to it. Or you could put BM/formula in it. Pedi said that was ok too.
  • My dr and phn said water is fine at 6 months but no more then 2 oz at a time for a max of 4 oz a day. M doesn't get near this but I do offer water with every meal (recommended to me by the phn) but he basically just chews on the sippy cup. I want him to get used to the cup plus milk is filling so sometimes after he's done a meal he doesn't want milk but water will help him digest the solids.

@SandNStarsNJ THAT FACE. Ugh. Love it.
  • I used dippy cups last time but ended up throwing them all out due to mold build up. I'm ocd about having clean things and even took brushes to the cups. The lids often got mold and it was hard to get out. They were never the ones to be recalled, the ones at my MIL's house did get recalled for mold. That was 3 years ago. The only cups in my house right now for the kids are the plastic ones from restaurants.
  • @sandnstarsnj I have the Tommee Tippee sippy cups.  But I'm thinking maybe I should've started with the straw sippy cups instead.

  • I'm using this one! Sorry if the photo is so big don't know how to fix it.
The way the mouth part is I don't see how there would be any place for mould. It's similar to the bottles and comes apart the same way! also interchangeable with the bottles so adding the handle to the bottle is super easy!

Everything molds faster here in PNW. Drives me crazy!
  • @lajoliedreamer  the cups molded in Colorado. We are newbies to the PNW. Good to know things mold fast here too.

Finally managed to catch on here too.

    Have a few questions...

    1) my LO loves the taste of food, yet doesn't know how to eat of a spoon, she keeps pushing it out with her tongue, yet upset if I don't give a new spoon full.
I give homemade purree, so not the smooth watery ones.
She chews a wee bit even though that's unnecessary

    2) with blw, do you give soft foods? My LO loves a rice cracker. And would take the food out of my hand if I'd let her. She now has a munskin with eple or banana in it. (Cold eple was the best during teething!)

  • @tvh1982 I think she's still just learning how to move the food around her mouth, down her throat. S hasn't been eating solids for some time and still manages to push some out. I don't necessarily do BLW but I think you can give anything that you would feed them yourself. S is able to feed herself French fries and the banana teething wafers.

@tvh1982 With BLW you give baby anything, everything you eat with the exception of honey, undercooked/raw meat, clear choking hazards (i.e. nuts) and watch the sodium. You can start with however many meals/snacks you want, but the key, especially at the beginning, is that you are eating with baby (same foods) so you can model how it's done. We are BLW and my little guy watches us like a hawk while we all eat... he even wants a drink at the same time we pick up our cups to take one. My baby took right to it and he digs into anything we put on his tray, although not a lot of food actually gets swallowed. He is still learning - learning to work the food around his mouth, to chew, how much food should go in, when to swallow, etc. Some babies play for a while... but it's still a good sign they are interested! Keep offering if that is what you want to do. It can be dangerous, though, to mix purees and BLW early on as baby can get confused about when they should just swallow food as opposed to chew and then swallow. So make your best judgement on how to feed your little one :)

  • Ughhhh, we're at 6 months, 1 week, 2 days and we've done only done mushy banana twice... weeeeeks ago.

I'm afraid we're going to end up GOT Robin Arryn style over here. :D

Haha! But maybe don't. That was such a creepy detail they included in the show. Like there's an age where you just don't BF anymore and that is definitely it.

Don't be so hard on yourself. When you're around and playing, go to the high chair and let LO play with food. No pressure.

I didn't really do much with solids until daycare forced my hand a week before 7 months. Don't stress about it - as someone reminded me when I was freaking out, food before one is just for fun, not nutrition.
  • Thanx for the advice @djh513!
They tell us here they need to eat from a spoon to help with speech.
So it's tough to know what is right as I don't want her to be confused about just swallowing or chewing.
She loves stuffing her own face, yet is just as crazy about me feeding her (she starts to figure out not to push the food out) but prefers to use the spoon herself.

Interesting. I've never heard letting them use a spoon helps with speech.  In the beginning S would shove it down her throat so we had to do it for her. Now she is doing a little better with it.

LO chooses to use the spoon as a teething mechanism over here instead.
Same here ! Has anyone tried some type of protein ? L loves yogurt, it is the only way we can get her eat the veggies or the soup. One spoon of soup, one spoon of yogurt.
  • @ZoeFer I'm lazy so I buy the pouches and A has tried chicken and turkey. She really likes it. We're going to dice up shrimp really small next weekend and give that a shot. Our pediatrician has been encouraging us to let A try high allergen foods (outside of honey) because I guess current recommendations say the earlier a baby tries a food, the less likely they are to be allergic.

Apparently it's good for the muscles and movement. A bottle and those 'squeeze bags' stop this development.
But guess with blw they still need to use muscles...I need to find this out.

S has eaten chicken and ground beef that I tore into small pieces with no problem
  • My LO has eaten salmon, ribs, pork, brisket, chicken, steak, and crab. She loves it all!

real food? oh lord I'm still in baby cereal and puree land. I just assumed I needed to work through veggies then on to fruit and finally protein
  • I apparently really need to get my act together with food... We've done it like 10x total. Yikes.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'm still mostly doing purées but recently I've been keeping some meat off to the side when cooking to give her. Technically my pedi said to wait until 8 months to give meat. She also said wait until 8 months to give eggs which I am doing because I'm scared. S already has a dairy allergy so I'm worried eggs will be an issue also.
  • What do you do with foods yourself don't eat?
Will you introduce them anyway or not?
I hardly ever eat meat as it makes me often ill and I don't like it a lot.

Hmm, I've never heard of this or read about it either. We do "preloaded" spoons sometimes with mushy/runny foods... yogurt or whatever. But we let him pretty much handle it himself with some guiding so he can figure out how to get the spoon to his mouth. He's getting better at it.

  • For protein I plan to stick with things like avocado, black beans, scrambled egg for awhile. I have a dislike of puréed meet. Currently we are just doing fruit and veggies pouches however but he just turned six months old so I'm not in a rush.
  • @ZoeFer I'm lazy so I buy the pouches and A has tried chicken and turkey. She really likes it. We're going to dice up shrimp really small next weekend and give that a shot. really? I would have thought the opposite. I just assumed if they have it too early it would cause the allergin. My first had baby oatmeal first before anything else at 6 months and developed an intolerance. Meaning she throws up anytime she has oatmeal even when it's mixed in with fruits or baked in desserts.
  • @camcbeth My pediatrician said the American Academy of Pediatrics just updated their guidelines and are now recommending peanuts, fruits, etc early now. Everything but honey. Something about how holding off has been shown to actually make allergens worse. So, @RhodaMorgenstern is correct!
  • I was told to also introduce allergens early on. We have done peanut butter and eggs already.

I was also told protein should be some of the first foods given because at 6 months they stop getting as much iron from breast milk and need extra from food. We have done chicken, beef, cod, tuna, eggs, chickpeas and Greek yogurt (10% plain .. was told the higher MF% the better).

I plan to give her anything whether I like it or not. She might like it even though I don't.
