It's great here, except the healthcare in Nova Scotia, it sucks and it's a huge crisis. So pick anywhere but this province haha

Another Canadian in the house!!! Ontario isn't doing much better...but still loving our health care and ability to stay home 12-18months with the babe!
Yea the maternity leave is amazing here in Canada, glad I'm not the only Canadian here (: !
  • From Edmonton, Alberta, Canada:) So nice to see other Canadians on here.
  • I'm from Alberta! We should have a weekly Canadian check-in since there's a few of us.
  • @Cricket99 where are you in the U.K.? With DS, I lived near Cambridge until 28 weeks. I miss it--especially tea time!  :)
  • So jealous of Canada's maternity leave!!! The US needs to step it up. I get 12 weeks off but only get paid for 6 so it's likely I'll take the 6 and go back part-time so I can get something for a paycheck. And don't even get me started about the healthcare.

Well that was depressing to think about :(
  • @sbishop426
I feel you! I have to empty my PTO because I won't have been at my job a year yet when BB3 is born to qualify for leave. My boss is going to look to see if she can get them to give it to me at 6 months. Otherwise, once my PTO is gone, it's all unpaid.
Our little Red Raider is here and another is on its way!

Only 6 weeks paid and 6 unpaid ... ouch ... that's actually terrible. That must be sooo hard returning to work with a newborn at home, is the health care terrible in the US ? I know you guys have to pay for procedures and stuff, meanwhile here it's "free" but we have a major short in doctors here and it's sooo hard to get anything done :/

  • Super jealous about any paid maternity leave. Any.

I don't get any paid maternity leave. I can take up to 12 weeks, but it's all unpaid. I am paying into a short-term disability policy which will pay me a portion of my regular pay, but only for 6 weeks.

  • I am also from Ontario, Canada. I'd be up for a weekly canadian check-in!
  • @missblaze - that's how it is for me, too. I can take 6 weeks of short term at 60% of my pay (only up to $500/week) and then 6 additional weeks unpaid. I have insane student loans so I cannot afford to take a pay cut at all so assuming I don't use more PTO than I have scheduled for the rest of the year, I'll have about 8 weeks next year which gives me 6 weeks of staying home with the baby and then 2 weeks for holidays (we typically travel across the country for Thanksgiving and Christmas). A few ladies in my office want to try to get a maternity leave policy established but I highly doubt my boss would go for it. Even 2-4 weeks paid plus ability to use PTO at this point would be better than what we have!
  • @gusgus14 I have astronomical student loans myself. I'm trying to put the money aside for 3 months of payments but I may just defer them for that time period. Not the most financially wise choice, but I refuse to let it get in the way of me spending that time with my LO.

  • @sbishop426, your maternity leave sounds exactly like mine. 12 weeks off, but only 6 are paid.
I ended up taking off an extra week with DD and took that out of my PTO. It's just cruel to have to leave a 6 week old newborn with someone else. I'm planning on taking off the full 12 weeks this time around. DH and I are already saving for it so we can make it work. My sweet DH is taking some OT shifts to make it happen for me (he's a police officer), so I'm excited to have more time with LO this go-round!
  • @amberrmariee20 in the US it totally depends on what kind of health insurance plan you are on. There is state benefits for low income, medicare for retired, employer based and independent. It all really just depends on what you are on. My sister had employee health insurance but choose the highest deductible so she had low monthly payments and had a little surprise come her way. She paid over $6k to have her baby and only got 6 weeks off from work unpaid as they did not have maternity plans at her employer. and every employeer insurance is different as well.
Insurances will cover different things and at different percentages and then you have a yearly deductible, so if you hit that, then everything after should be covered. I am one of the very lucky Americans where my DH has amazing employer health insurance and it is going to cost me nothing to have this baby because everything is covered along with all the routine care after the baby is born for both myself and the baby. I also get 12 weeks full pay of maternity leave from company. We didn't pay anything for our first DS and I had a csection.
All that said, I think the medical care here is great. I can get in to see a doctor very quickly for anything, we have a lot of specialist, and most health systems have a great network of doctors and resources. I lived in England for a few years and partook in their national health. It was great to know that no matter what, everything was covered, but they also had long wait times for non-life threatening issues. Still good care though from what I could tell. I never had to have anything major done though. My FIL had cancer last year, and beat it, but it was nice that they did not have to worry about a single thing financial wise and could just focus on his care.

I could not imagine having to pay to have a baby ! That's actually crazy. In Canada we don't pay anything for it. Do you guys get any sort of child tax credit each month for a baby ? In Canada we get so much $$ a month for child tax credit depending on our income. US needs to step up their game !!
  • Like many of you, I get 6 paid, 6 unpaid and can technically take up to 6 months off. On the plus side, I have the best supervisor/boss ever and he will work with me to work from home/come in late/leave early etc. as much as makes sense... but still. On the negative side, with this new house our mortgage is about to double (of course so is the size of our living space!), and I can't even let myself think right now about money... but when November rolls around, I'll be in panic mode!

  • @amberrmariee20 The US will not be stepping up its game for years. False promises are made by candidates each year, but nothing will change. That said, yes, we do get tax credits when we file in April for children, and depending on your income/child care needs, you also get money back to pay for a portion of childcare costs (so long as you are not using a family member).

At least you guys get some sort of child tax credit, hopefully someone will change the maternity leave. Here our prime minister just sends $$ to other countries in need which would be fine but dooesn't help our healthcare which is sad because we are in a huge doctor shortage and no one seems to care about the people
  • If any of you are in California you get 4 weeks of disability before baby is born, 6 to 8 weeks of disability depending of vaginal or c-section delivery, and 6 weeks baby bonding. All paid at 55% of your income, but you don't pay taxes on that income. Granted with all of that you have to be with your current employer for at least a year before the due date and your employer has to qualify (check your paystub to see if you pay into SDI, if you do pay that tax you qualify).

  • Yeah, unfortunately I'm a teacher in CA, @MrsDorkCharming, so we don't pay into state disability. SO lame. At least my employer covers six weeks of my maternity leave at full pay, so I guess that's something. I get an extra six weeks "bonding" time, but I don't get paid for it at all. I couldn't afford to take off that extra time with DD (we had just bought a house), but you better believe I'm doing it with this baby!
  • @cyanope My sister is a teacher too and had a baby late last July :( I was shocked when I found out that teachers don't get more than the first 6 weeks. Her husband got more time off than she did! She went back in early October, waaaay too soon for her liking. Luckily she was able to split 60/40 with another teacher at the Jr High and work part time this school year. And between the holiday breaks, my mom, her husband, me taking some time off work, and a few other family members and friends, my niece didn't have to start daycare until January when she was 6 months old.

I still don't understand how most of this country can allow more time for puppies to be with their mother's than children to be with theirs. It really makes me sad.

I get 4 weeks paid at 100% and can take (I believe) an additional 12 weeks.  The first portion (after the 4 weeks mat/pat) depletes all benefit time (sick, personal, and vacation) that I have on the books and the remainder is unpaid.  I also believe I have to pay 100% of my insurance premiums (including what's normally covered by my employer) that come due (on the 1st of the month)  while I'm on unpaid leave.  So needless to say I'll be planning my PTO very carefully for the next 7 or so months so I have to pay the least amount out of pocket for my premiums  ;)

I can take up to 12 weeks at my company. While it is technically unpaid, I can use my vacation and sick time. My benefits rock so I think I'm going to end up with 11 weeks paid at 100%, and the last week at 65%. I'm the main breadwinner in our family, but I think I'm still going to take all 12 weeks off.

    Edit for spelling.
  • Stettler, Alberta Canada here!

NY here, with DS I got 12 weeks, none of it paid unless you take your sick and vacation time, which I did. State law is changing in January though and with this maternity leave I will get 12 weeks off, with
8 weeks at 50% pay, and I can use my sick and vacation time to supplement the rest- so much better!
  • edited June 2017
I'm in the KC area, smack in the middle of the heartland....
I get 12 weeks, short term disability. I think the first 6 weeks are 80% of my pay and the last 6 are 60%? I could be wrong, I haven't talked to my HR rep yet. DH and I have saved up so we can supplement what I'm not bringing home, and to allow him to take unpaid time off to be home. Right now he's a restaurant manager but hopefully he'll change jobs as early as September and have more regular hours etc.
we're super lucky our parents are all close so I'll have help at first but it sucks his job won't provide paternity leave at all, and he won't have had time to build up pto yet.

  • I'm so jealous of you guys. Ill be lucky if I get 2 full weeks, then its back part time or work from home for a couple weeks. Then back to full time.

  • I'm a Kansas native but live in the Philly area now. My company is UK based, however, in the USA we don't get the same year off that my colleagues do in Ireland! I can take up to 12 weeks. The first 6 weeks is paid at 60%, remaining 6 weeks are unpaid. Our company does offer a lot of PTO which any thing not used is paid out when labor starts essentially. Based on due date, I have to use it or lose it because the counter starts over in January (bummer).  We can use PTO before it is accumulated, so at least DH can take a good amount of time at the beginning of January (we work for the same company).
