DH and I will celebrate our 12 year anniversary in August. We went to Kauai for a week and it was so beautiful and relaxing. I would definitely go back. But where I really want to go back to is Puerta Vallarta where we went for our babymoon. We went to an all inclusive resort called Secrets. I regret that I was pregnant and still having morning sickness and I want to go back so badly when I'm feeling great and can drink!
@miranda21037 I flew at 28 weeks, 30 and 31 weeks with DS. We moved internationally at 28 weeks and that was a big deal flight--11 hours. Compression stockings were a must. And I hated them. Ha. 30 and 31 weeks I flew cross country to see my family before the baby came. They were 5 hour flights so much better than the 11 hour flight. Talk to your doctor. Most airlines say it's safe to fly up to 36 weeks--you just usually need a doctor's note. I wouldn't want to fly much after 32 weeks, just personally. I also flew at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 11 weeks, 13 weeks... ha. Some of those were international.
DH and I honeymooned on our first anniversary to Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands and it was a fabulous 9 days without cell phones or internet. We promised each other then, that we would take one trip each year and unplug. Best decision ever. We loved the island--they advertise themselves as a mini-continent and it was fun to explore all the different areas from huge dunes, to white sand beaches to black sand to pebble beaches. Mountains, plateaus... city and villages. The people were so nice and the resort was fabulous. It was a fun adventure.
We are going to San Diego for Memorial Weekend. DH's parents, SIL/BIL and their three kids are possibly visiting in August and want to do the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon and Mt Charleston plus go to Anaheim and Disneyland possibly. Whew. I'm tired just thinking about it. Hopefully at that point, I won't be morning sick. I had morning sickness with DS until 19 weeks. Then last year I booked a cabin at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for a weekend in September. I have no idea if we will do a babymoon--all of our family lives across the country from us, so if we do, we are taking the toddler. Hawaii was on my list for next year in the spring. We will see if I still want to go with a newborn. Haha.
I've got the travel bug reading everyone's stories! DH and I road-tripped down the coast of Portugal and through the south of Spain for our honeymoon! We definitely indulged. We ate all the things, drank all the wine, and stayed at some super ritzy places after cashing in years worth of Hilton points. It was amazing!
@miranda21037 I am planning a trip to Florida in August with family. As of right now, Zika has only been reported in the southern tip around Miami. I am going to clear it with my OB of course, and use preventative measures- but I am not worried. Anyone here from FL have any insight?
We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon as well! We stayed on Maui for a week and then spent a week on the "Big Island". It was amazing! We are hoping to go again for our 10th anniversary (in 6 years).
DH proposed in Venice, Italy so for our honeymoon we went on a 12 day Mediterranean cruise that departed Venice and ended in Barcelona. We spent 2 days ahead of the cruise in Venice, and 3 in Barcelona afterwards. Best part, for me, was all of the breathtaking ancient/old architecture (I'm an architect) and being able to visit so many places (Port calls were Instanbul, Mykonos, Athens, Naples, Rome, Cinque Terre, and Marseilles) in such a "short" time. We would LOVE to go back to Italy and Greece. Planning on going to Spain in 2020 with my parents since they both turn 70 that year!
For a babymoon....I'm sure we will end up doing a weekend away somewhere. We live in MA, and DH has been talking about taking a trip this summer to either Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. I've been to both, but he hasn't, so that should be a nice relaxing trip!
Point Loma is beautiful, @mdfarmchick. One of my favorite places in that area is Liberty Station at the old Naval Training Center. It's an old naval headquarters/barracks that they converted into shops and restaurants. My favorite restaurant there is called Soda and Swine. I don't know how you're feeling about meat right now, but their specialty is meatballs and specialty sodas. Super cute, with DELICIOUS food (not everything is meat). There's also Slater's 50/50 (a yummy burger place) and Corvette Diner (a 50's themed diner that is great for kids). Cabrillo National Monument is in Point Loma. It's really walkable, and gives you some of the best views in San Diego. There are tide pools at the bottom of the hill, the old light house, and a WWII bunker. I am a history nerd, so that might not appeal to everyone, but the views are worth it! It's also right next door to Rosecrans National Cemetery for war veterans. There's not really an awesome beach in Point Loma, but there are a couple of hidden bay inlets. One is called Kellogg's on the La Playa shoreline (Google it to find a map). It's residential, so there's not any parking, but it's calm and good for little ones. If you want a good beach, my favorite is La Jolla shores, but it's most of San Diego's favorite, so it'll be PACKED. I also like Coronado. It's a man-mad island, so it doesn't have the wave break like some of the other beaches. The island itself it SO fun to explore, super quaint, and very walkable. The Hotel Del (San Diego's most famous hotel, where Some Like it Hot was filmed) is in Coronado. Old Town is also a must see, and fun with little ones. Lots of shops and delicious Mexican food. We love Cafe Coyote (fresh tortillas you can buy on the street) and Barra Barra (kids eat free with an adult meal). Other fun places: The zoo (it's world famous for a reason), and next door to the zoo is Balboa Park (museums and restaurants). The Gaslamp Quarter in downtown is always fun, but not always kid friendly (especially at night when the nightlife scene booms). Seaport Village is also a cute little must-see (more shops and restaurants), and walking along the embarcadero. I have a LOT more where that came from, so let me know if you have any more specific questions. Hope you love our beautiful city!
@cyanope thank you! I am already telling DH. We haven't decided if we want to do the zoo with a toddler on a holiday weekend. It's a long time for him to be trapped in the stroller but we haven't ruled it out. DH and I are both history nerds so I love these suggestions. DS loves the ocean and the tide pools so I'm positive he will be getting wet. I am positive we will have to visit Coronado. Thank you so much!
We went to Punta Cana for 8 days. I loved the resort we stayed at, so many restaurants so we didn't need to leave. Beautiful beach, resort, food, and drinks ahhhh take me back.
@schaze OMG we went to Estes Park, CO for our honeymoon too!! Since we are big horror fanatics, we stayed at The Stanley Hotel, the hotel that The Shining was based off of, and we stayed on a haunted floor in a haunted suite and just looked for ghosts! Since we weren't sleeping anyways
***edit*** I had way more to say but it keeps cutting me off and it's almost bedtime
We went to the Smokey Mountains and stayed in an amazing cabin there. We basically spent the entire week sleeping, eating, playing video games, watching movies, getting drunk, or having sex. That was literally the entirety of the week. Best vacation ever.
We plan to take the month of July next year to travel a bit. See family on either coast and maybe take a week just us to Maui or Europe. No real plans for a babymoon. We don't live near family and my husband's work schedule is too difficult to plan anything ahead.
@baby_is_coming love it! We rented a cabin closer to RMNP, but we tried to go to the Stanley to check it out-they were doing some renovations on the outside at the time so we didn't really get a good look.
DH and I went to Thailand and Bali. It was amazing. We did Bangkok and Koh Samui in Thailand (beach part) and Ubud (culture/jungle) and Nusa Dua (beach) in Bali. Our highlight was definitely our hotel in Thailand. DH travels for work, so we got to use points and it was incredible. The brunches - unlimited champagne and oysters and everything every morning, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand! Perfect weather everyday. Take me back! If anyone ever needs travel tips for those areas, let me know and I'm happy to share. I document everything and I'm a big trip advisor contributor (nerd alert). I also felt like it was not as hard to travel there as I expected...after being there 5 days, I felt like it was worth the effort to get there. Flights were insanely cheap (<$800), and Koh Samui was only a 1-hour flight from Bangkok. I would love to go back to Thailand. I saw someone mention safety. I was shocked how safe I felt everywhere in Thailand. There was obviously some serious culture shock on my part in Bangkok (just so many people!) but beyond getting screwed a few times negotiating transportation, we felt safe. I loved Bali, too. I was surprised but I liked Ubud way more than Nusa Dua. The rice paddies and rainforest are so pretty. Getting a massage and body scrub in the middle of rice fields (for $40) while it was pouring rain outside - incredible!
No babymoon plans for us. I have a feeling we will do a long weekend to AZ or CA to get some sunshine simply because I'm a whole lot more pleasant when I get some genuine vitamin D. And Zika sucks. We got married in Florida in November '15 right before it began. We'd love to go back for our anniversary but our OB said better safe than sorry...and that she'd rather have us bring our almost 1-year-old to the beach for the following year than worry about it this year. It's not in Miami but she felt like it was close enough to just go somewhere else. That said, I'm conservative about that stuff and I think she mirrors my approach to me on purpose.
All of you who went and spent a week in Mexico at resorts - it sounds INCREDIBLE. What I would give for that right now!!!
@mdfarmchick did you get fitted for stockings, or just buy some standard ones? I have both but I think I need a new prescription so they are covered by insurance. Glad to hear you did so much flying. We are heading to Italy in a few weeks and I am very nervous for some reason.
SO jealous you're going to Italy, @libbberty! We went in 2014 (before we got pregnant with DD), and I've been DYING to go back. What city are you staying in? l
@cyanope we are going to Gaiole in Chianti for a wedding. I'm excited but because DH is German, a Europe trip automatically means family time, so we only get three days in Italy before heading to Germany. My OB said no fresh fruit or veggies in Italy because there is toxoplasmosis in the soil. No wine. No cheese. No olive tapenade or caprese or limoncello. I'm going to be a real treat lol.
What was your favorite part of Italy? Isn't it just so damn romantic? I feel like it brings out the best in our relationship. We also went in 2014 before we moved back to the States, so unfortunately we have already been to the exact area we are going. I will NEVER complain about Tuscany but I would kill to see the Amalfi coast or Southern Italy! DH was so sweet, he booked us a hotel at my favorite place in Lake Como to drive up to Germany from the wedding, but the car rental rates are so high switching countries that we have to fly from Florence and cancel it
Even with all of the limitations, it still sounds glorious, @libbberty! We stayed in Rome in Campo de' Fiori, and took some day trips to Naples and Pompeii. Romantic is the perfect word to describe Italy. I love how slow everything is (even in Rome) and that people just seem to enjoy life more! Have a fun trip, and eat lots of gelato since you can't really eat anything else!
@cyanope Oh Rome! I LOVE Rome. I would love to go to Naples. I totally agree about the pace of life. It just seems so much less stressful and like people take time to enjoy. I felt that way when we lived in Germany, too. Everything is closed on Sundays for family time. Just seems like they have their priorities straight. Great point on the gelato! That honestly helps with a big attitude shift on my part.
@libbberty DH is military so I was supposed to get some issues by insurance but they were out of any size except XS... my bestie was also expecting so she ordered us both some from Amazon. Next time I am totally getting some really comfy, nice ones like people use for running though. In general, I'm a flip flop kind of girl so I just don't like socks. Lol!
ps, I'm super jealous of Italy! DH and I wanted to go when we were living in Europe but the timing just never worked out. I miss the slower pace over there for sure though.
We had planned to to go Mexico but it was when the swine flu was raging (8 years ago) and they were talking of cancelling flights and we were highly encouraged to change our plans. We were totally refunded and ended up going to the Oregon Coast. Not the same, but we still had a crazy good time together! We've been blessed to do other fun travelling since...Thailand, Budapest (part work/part vaca), and a mission trip to Haiti.
We just got back from Iceland the first week of May! It was soooo amazing! October should be good too because it will be the tail end of the major tourist season!
We got married in July 09. We went to Prague, Paris, and London. It was awesome . We've went to London 2 separate occasions after that. I would love to do Paris again but right now things are a bit rough there. I will likely take my kids in 5 yrs to Paris and Disney world . With our daughter, we had a Babymoon in cape cod/Martha's vineyard/ Nantucket. It was really nice. This time around, we can't do a Babymoon without our daughter. We have several trips lined up for the summer though and we're in Iceland right now so ummm i guess that's our Babymoon
@sjb2215 we hit the whole southern coast all the way to Höfn. We also did this with a toddler, so drive times were based around naps. The glacial lagoon is super cool and there are tons of cool waterfalls right along the roads. To save on food expenses we did a lot of grocery store dinners and buying yogurt for breakfast. Also, restaraunts attached to gas stations have fabulous burger!
We were just married back in September and had a dream honeymoon in Bora Bora. DH said if we were going half way around the world we should do it right - so we had our own little bungalow hut over the water. It was breathtaking. I would like to do a babymoon but have to figure out a place that would be safe with Zika
