Ok ladies what do you do about night, boob leakage? I sleep on my side and I'm waking up to pools of breast milk. Any suggestions? I really don't want to wear a bra/I heard you shouldn't.

I wear a nursing tank to sleep. So it has a built in shelf bra and I can put a breast pad in to catch the leakage.

I wear a nursing sleep bra that allowed for a breast pad when I leaked in the beginning. Now I don't leak anymore, but I still try to sleep mostly on my back.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. We're at a point where I think I'm able to store some pumped milk in the fridge. But I wanted to review some things...
Freshly pumped breast milk is good out in room temp for: 4 -8 hours (ideal 3-4 hours)
If baby started a fresh bottle, but didn't finish, it's good left out in room temp and to be used within: 1-2 hours **(Or does it need to be put in the fridge to be able to use it again?)**
If baby started a warmed bottle from fridge, but didn't finish, it's good left out in room temp and to be used within: 1 hour **(Or does it need to be discarded after one use?)**
Refrigerated breast milk is good for: 3-8 days (ideal 3 days)
Freshly pumped that has never been in the fridge is good for up to 8 hrs. Milk that has been in the fridge and heated is good for up to 6 hrs. If baby has drank some from the bottle it is good for 4 hrs. The remainder doesn't need to be refrigerated it can be reheated if needed. Frozen/thawed milk is good for 24 hrs in the fridge but only a maximum of two hours once warmed
Hi ladies, when do you think is a good time to start pumping? Breastfeeding is going great, no issues but I want to start storing milk. With DS I started around the two week mark but the LC at the hospital said closer to a month. I am only 4 days post partum so I will give it more time but what does everyone think about this? Can I start at 1-2 weeks?

Are you headed back to work soon? I had the same questions. I'm not going back until September so I don't really need a big stash yet. I would like a small amount so I could leave DH with DS for a date with DD or something. The LC at my hospital also recommended waiting until 1 month so that my supply is established. I also worry that DS will refuse a bottle if we don't introduce it soon enough.
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I am taking 12 weeks off so should be going back mid-August. I would just like to get in a routine of pumping in the AM to build a supply for my DH to give bottles etc. Also I had a large stash last time which really helped bridge the gap if I got busy seeing patients at work last time and missed a pumping session.
@lnds32 - My LCs said it's okay to start pumping at around 2 weeks but to not offer a bottle to baby yet. They said the sweet spot to avoid nipple confusion but also have baby willing to take a bottle is between 4-6 weeks.

I would always err on the side of caution and go for the lowest time limit. Also the recommendation here is that ANY bottle of formula or breastmilk should be consumed completely or discarded within 1 hour.

@SKZW yes to olive oil! Yes to strawberry daiquiris! Yes to double good luck money!
Pumping with a newborn and toddler is hard, there's no question. I have been able to get 6-8 sessions in a day, when I was told to do 8-12 from the hospital - but in all fairness, Isaac nurses a ton so I sorta consider that a session which makes up for it. DD entertains herself with puzzles or "baby games" on iPad or colors or eats while we sit together at the kitchen table or on the couch while she watches Sesame Street, Story Bots (I like this show, guilty pleasure), or Beat Bugs. She finds it fascinating and we talk about pumping and giving the baby milk as she transitions to being a big girl with a new toddler bed, undies (pull-ups while potty training), and no more milk bottles. Lots of change but we're doing well!
Checking in at 1 month PP! We have had every struggle imaginable from the start. I was never able to express colostrum during labor or after. DD had to go to NICU for 12 hours for low blood sugar and needed formula to get her sugars up. Because of my PCOS and GD, I wasn't able to express ANYTHING until 4 days PP. Surprisingly, DD has a great latch but I have a really low supply and late let down. DD will latch for a couple minutes but won't wait for my milk to get to her. On top of everything else, she has bad GERD and is on prescription antacid and has to be fed in an upright position.
I've supplemented formula with pumped breastmilk but seeing as how she's only getting a little each day and I've stressed away half my maternity leave, we are returning pump tomorrow and going exclusive formula.
@fbmandy55 I'm sorry you've been having a tough time breastfeeding! I have no thoughts other than words of encouragement, and positive thoughts your way.
@fbmandy55 good to hear from you. It sucks when things don't go as planned but I'm glad you've figured out what's going to work for all of you. Please be kind to yourself and enjoy your new baby and the rest of your maternity leave!
@fbmandy55: Thanks for sharing your struggle with breastfeeding. You've faced a lot of issues, and your accepting it shows a strength you might not see in yourself. Keep it up!
@fbmandy55 You're doing a great job. I think you'll find peace once you get into the formula routine and not tethered to the pump. Keep up the good work!
@fbmandy55 You are enough, mama. This mothering gig is hard, and breastfeeding / pumping is no exception. You've done so much for your baby and you are wise enough to know what YOU need. So many hugs.
Hi @chailife I have an 18 months and when she is home I just pump in front of her while everything else is going on, I tell her what it is and she just laugh at me. I pump 8 time and its really hard, but after the supply is established about 2-3 months then you go down to a schedule that works best as long as it is consistent and you get what baby needs. Hope it helps, I pumped exclusively for my first for 7 months, and this time seems even harder
@fbmandy55 good to see you here again ! I had been wondering about you. Sorry to hear BFing is not going well but fed is best as well as a happy mama and baby. Big creepy internet hugs
I've been slow online this week cuz my mom is at the house helping out (and distracting me lol). But I'm currently sitting in a Lactation waiting room at an ENT waiting for Elliott to get her tongue and lip ties corrected and I feel like SHIT. I know it's for the best but I hate the idea of her hurting. *mom guilt goes here*
@ChristinaWild, it's so much better to take care of it now! I have a relative whose 2.5 year old just had the tongue tie correction because it went undiagnosed for so long. His speech was very delayed because of it - he's just now trying to talk since it was corrected.

Thanks ladies! We went through this with DS, and I know it makes a huge difference. It's just so hard to hand off your tiny little baby to someone, just knowing they're going to hurt them. Then when you get them back and they are just miserable. It's heartbreaking
@fbmandy55, I'm sorry you are so bummed about abandoning breastfeeding. Letting go is really difficult and sad, but as someone who has done that, the other side is so nice! Less stress and worry...enjoy that baby and leave and try not to be so hard on yourself.
I probably should have started reading this before! Oops! Anyway, breast feeding didn't go so well in the hospital and I guess I just didn't want to stress myself out over it so we decided to pump but we used the formula bottles the hospital had while there until we got home with my pump. Not sure why they didn't offer it in the hospital or why we didn't ask but too late now. Today was the first day pumping since yesterday we ended up in the ER and I was diagnosed with the beginning of mastitis. Rough couple of days...so my question is, since this was the first pump I only got a little bit out, maybe 20 ml total (pumped on both at the same time). It's such a small amount, how do you feed it to the baby? I have those small skinny bottles from Medela or so I just use the bottle I pumped into (Spectra pump)? Do I add it to his premise formula bottles from the hospital? Does he drink the breast milk first then the formula since it's such a small amount?
Sorry for all of the questions! Also, he drinks so fast! We've started doing what I guess is aftuakky pace feeding and burping throughout the feeding. Seems to be helping. He can finish off one of the premade bottles but then gets hiccups or gas-y. So we started the pacing and it's seemed to help. So much trial and error! Glad we are going to the ped tomorrow! I'm sure we'll get more answers and direction

@BabyMC517, sorry about the mastitis! I'm in a facebook group for moms who pump exclusively, and there are a lot of people who just mix breastmilk in with the formula in a bottle. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing that, except if the baby doesn't take the full bottle, you could waste milk because formula has to be tossed faster.
I can't remember if you're a FTM or not - have you pumped before? The best way to build up supply is to start with pumping at least 20 minutes at a time 8 times a day. Again, I'm doing exclusive pumping, so I'm not sure how the logistics of that work with someone who's also breastfeeding.

@emilyalso Both my kids had that. Not sure if it's related to lip and/or tongue ties. DD had neither tie but I suspect DS does have a tongue tie. I think it's partially related to all the nursing and typical baby skin molting that occurs on their entire body.
Do other breastfed babies get little blisters/loose skin on their lips? If yes, what do you do about it?
Vanity alert: I'm mostly worried because we have our newborn pictures coming up...
I'm looking at it right now on his lip! I'm almost positive that my girls had it too. I never bothered with messing with it as it doesn't seem to bother them. If your worried about it in the newborn pictures, maybe discuss with the photographer about editing she can do?

@emilyalso - it can be a sign of tongue or lip tie, but it can also just be from a latch that's incorrect. Elliott has the blister on both lips and the LC told me it's because she is using her gums to compensate for the ties she had. So basically it's not abnormal but can be indicative of a problem.
@BabyMC517 when I used to have bm and formula to feed ds I never mixed as you must throw away formula after an hour but bm lasts out much longer. I woukdd give the bm separate then follow w formula @emilyalso I've heard of nursing blisters and I believe those are normal
I don't know if this has been discussed, but does anyone have any tips or know of something to collect breast milk from the non nursing breast? I keep leaking and am completely covered by the time to switch sides.

I haven't done it yet because I haven't delivered but I have a thing called a Haaka that was recommended by a Facebook breast feeding group I'm in. It's a pump that collects the milk leaking from the non-used breast. It looks easy to use and they all swear by it. It's not too expensive so I thought it would be worth a try!
@kns1988 FTM thanks for the tips! I want to EP but was concerned I wasn't getting enough milk out so I wanted to make sure we can supplement with the formula as needed. I pumped more thisblast time (100 ml!). Seems like a lot to me lol
@Yiggle09 thank you! We have him the BM first, which wasn't much, and then the formula. This last feeding there was enough BM (same amount that the formula bottle has) that he only had that.
I think im just unsure how much he should have at each feeding. He will drink the entire formula bottle (45-50 ml) if we let him. We kind of break it up with burping and rest because he drinks it so fast. Definitely going to talk to the pediatrician tomorrow about it.
One last thing...man do my boobs feel better after pumping so much!
