The "crunchy" thread

Re: The "crunchy" thread

  • I don't know where I would fall. I'm trying to love towards a crunchy lifestyle but mom of 2 almost 3, running a business and going to school full time while being pregnant usually means convenience wins. I'm educated on what's natural/good but I will  do whatever takes the least amount of effort at this point.

  • I was crunchy light with DS when he was born. All about baby wearing, attempted to BF before failing miserably, homemade all of his baby food with organic produce...but then I realized life is just too short and started using store bought stuff and he's mostly ok.

I would die without my Clorox wipes.

    I guess I'm slightly crunchy?
I love BeautyCounter, I'm mindful of most of the cleaning products I use (some things DO call for bleach/Clorox wipes IMO)
I try to buy organic and conserve water/reduce waste when I can.
I suck at recycling but I try.

I would consider myself extra lightly crunchy. All I really do is use organic/natural makeup and deodorant. Both of those changes came after my first DD was born and my mom-paranoia kicked in thinking that everything would be harmful to her. Now that I use those things, I am very happy with the products' performances though. I breastfed and made my own baby food really just because it was convenient and inexpensive. I did fall in love with breastfeeding [eventually] though and I have a new appreciation for it since so many women have struggles that prevent them from being able to.

The original intent of this thread was more of a product suggestion type of chatter than a "how do (or don't) you save the world" declaration. But enter some megalomania and a dash of sarcasm... because who doesn't love that on their taco?

Feel free to recommend/rave about any crunchy granola products you use that you think other moms may love too!
  • I think I would fall into the "granola light" or as people around me call it "crispy crunchy" category. I typically...

    -cloth diaper/wipes
-but organic as much a size possible
    - try to use natural organic beauty products
    -breastfeed into toddlerhood
    -try to use alternative medicine

I am not trying to save he world.

For specifics (per middy's request) I use raw local honey, avocado oil, and castile soap to wash my face.
  • @bumpybump vinegar is amazing!!!! Its my answer to all cleaning problems.

I'm completely happy! :D just wanted to encourage specifics if anyone had something they wanted to share. I'm so interested in all the crunch out there

ETA: It wasnt a demand. Just an additional thought if anyone had anything. See how I followed the vibe of the thread myself?
  • I probably identify most with attachment parenting, which I guess lands me somewhere on the crunchy spectrum.  I EBF #1 for 15 months and #2 for 20 months.  If things go well, I'd like to EBF #3 up to 2 years.  We made most of the baby food the first time around with organic produce and were more lax with both things the second time around.  We don't really buy organic produce now although we get most of it from June through December through the CSA at a local farm.

We have some organic cleaners, but still need to use the conventional stuff for certain cleaning things.  We look closely at the chemicals when buying suntan lotions for the family and bath products for the kids.  I always bring a reusable water bottle to work and carry ones for the kids when we go out.  We could still make some other better choices for the environment.

We use use disposable diapers.  I'm pretty sure our daycare will only deal with disposables and I never had the desire to use cloth.  Writing all of this out though, I seem to be crunchier than I thought.

As far as tacos, I love them all, but usually prefer the soft shell.  I don't know why there's so much hate for cilantro.  I like it a lot and think it definitely elevates certain dishes.

I would consider myself medium/light crunchy.
    - we don't have a TV
-I nursed until right before DS 3rd birthday
    - we co sleep
    - use natural cleaning products (the toilet is the exception)
    - eat mainly organic
    - had a med free birth in a hospital (will hopefully repeat again)
    - pro vax
Reading this thread made me realize I need to do more research into my skin care and beauty products.

With DS we did cloth wipes.  I also did a lot of research on butt creams and bath products and went with a brand called CJ's Butter.  It has to be ordered online but for newborn baby skin I wanted something very gentle and will be ordering from them again.

We also did baby lead weaning more by default then anything else.  We would cook carrots and sweet potatoes until they turned to mush when you would bite them and gave that to DS cut into sticks.  We also did a lot of avocado and bananas because they are naturally the right texture.  It was super easy and DS is one of the best eaters I have ever seen.  I don't know if this had any impact on that but I am sure it didn't hurt.

*ETA Team neutral on cilantro.  Anyone else the same?  I don't meet many others, I feel like most people love it or hate it.

I TRIED to be crunchy or somewhat light granola (never knew of those phrases until this thread!)

    • TRIED cloth diapers with my DS - it worked maybe a few weeks. I got lazy, plus I'd be tired after work, cooking dinner after work, squeezing in a workout, chores, etc
    • I did breastfed my DS for 14 months. Hope to do the same with baby girl
    • I did try to make my own babyfood, freeze it, and give it to my mom to feed DS while I was at work. She would then run out and I'd get tired or lazy to do the process again. So my mom would just buy babyfood from the Navy Commissary lol.
    • I buy a few things organic - veggies, household products, etc only when its cheaper than non-organic
    • I do use Vinegar and Water solution to clean the windows at home or for cleaning purposes
    • I do drink apple cider vinegar with water and squeezed lemon juice to help me regulate my bowel, and it works for me!
    • Reuse the grocery bags after shopping for trash bags in the house or for my dog's poopie bag on walks
    • I use my Pure Barre Swell bottle daily for my water and avoid buying bottled water at work or when out and about.
    • I used to take the carpool lane when I lived in Southern California and carpooled with folks

Now let me tell you about some legit mexican food! My DH is from San Diego and I was born in Texas. I LOVE ME SOME SOCAL MEXICAN FOOD!! Our last trip in March back to SD, we brought back wheat, flour, and corn tortillas from a san diego mexican grocery store and froze them bad boys when we got home so they would last. Oh they're 100% better than the tortillas at regular grocery stores!! They made them fresh in front of our eyes!

And if ever in San Diego - you MUST TRY CARNE ASADA FRIES or POLLO ASADO FRIES! It's a local thing and only in SD. When I lived in Los Angeles, people would look at me weird and say - oh that's only San Diego! A CALI BURRITO IS BOMB.COM TOO! Burrito with pollo asado, FRENCH FRIES, pico de gallo, sour cream, shredded cheese, guac.! It's a SoCal thing!

  • @dma0389  I grew up in Orange County and we don't have Carne Asada Fries either.  But when I traveled in Peru they had something similar at almost every restaurant we ate at..

@dma0389 I'll be in San Diego next week! Carne Asada Fries here I come!
  • @dma0389 I live in SD and carne asada fries and Cali burritos are two of my favorite foods. But you have to be sure to specify mexi guac or you get this awful sour cream based guacamole.  There's a drive through taco shop on the corner as I leave my OB's office and it's  so dangerous.
  • Crunchy alert: I'm planning on practicing *some* aspects of the Chinese medicine practice "sitting" the month after delivery, including belly binding. Did any STMs do belly binding after delivery and if so, what wrap did you use?

(Sitting the month is meant to restore a woman's body and fluids--mainly blood--and give her ample time to recover fully. Basically I'll just be doing belly binding, mostly laying down, lots of soups, and taking a special herbal formula prescribed by my acupuncturist. FYI most of the "sitting the month" practices are crazy, like no showers, no internet, no cold water or drinks, no air conditioning, don't leave the house or carry the baby, stuff like that.)
  • @mrsmatt1212 I did belly binding after my first with this wrap.

I thought it made a big difference in my recovery and plan on doing it again this time.
  • @dtspmama yay! Thank you!
  • @mrsmatt1212 I just watched a vlog about a woman who gave birth and her mom was very old school in her Asian traditions about after birth. They ended up fighting so much about it. I had never heard about the sitting month until that vlog!
  • @morgy_bee it's fascinating! Some Asian women actually die of heat stroke from it. I guess I just embrace the idea of allowing a long time of rest and replenishment, knowing what our bodies go through and lose. At least a longer time than our culture typically supports a new mom just "lying" around. But def not to the extent the tradition states! Mama needs her a/c (esp in FL in August).
  • Anyone going to eat their placenta? My DH almost died when they suggested this in our childbirth class. I think he would leave me.

Fav "crunchy" product is Eminence skin care products. I love them.
  • lynkatlynkat member
Never heard of that before! @mrsmatt1212 I'm intrigued.

@emilyrose807 my midwives will be encapsulating my placenta for me this time. I'm a STM and did not do it last time so I'm looking forward to see what kind of difference it makes (I had some PPD last time).
  • @emilyrose807 same as @lyndshurt, my midwife will be encapsulating mine. I think it's costs $100.
  • JWatt5JWatt5 member
Encapsulating is kind of interesting - The PPD side of it is what draws me as I'm concerned with that. The placenta is a whole new world to DH and I
@emilyrose807 DH had the same reaction to lotus birthing. Since learning more about the placenta, he's become fascinated with it and the cord.

I thought about cord banking, but ultimately decided to donate his cord blood. I really want to give back and be able to tell my son later in life that he he gave back the second he entered this world.

@mrsmatt1212 Our filipino culture kind of practices that but more modernized (Sitting). My mom and the aunties & esp my grandma (who had 11 kids naturally btw! eeeccckkkk OUCH!) emphasizes on taking it easy. I.e. Don't lift, don't clean, stay home and wait for a month to leave, something about showering, eating green leafy veggies esp. malunggay AKA Moringa as it helps with breastmilk production, minimize showers (I showered and didn't follow that!), don't have sex (I didn't bec my vagina was still healing lol), don't go upstairs (that I did follow and slept in our downstairs bedroom just bec going up and down to our room was a chore and my vagina hurt climbing up our high bed! LOL). I think those were the ones they emphasized. They didn't say not to use the AC, I live in FL so it's hot and our AC is on all the dang time in summer.

interesting you bring that up bec I see the filipinos took some of the chinese thoughts but tweaked it hahaha.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @dma0389 yes! Basically I'm tweaking it to be as restful as possible. But I would feel absolutely disgusting not having a shower for a month, especially after BIRTH. Bless.
  • I got a brochure in my welcome bag from my doctor that talks about being able to donate your placenta if you have a c section.  I'm considering it, but need to research it more. Has anyone done or heard of this?
  • @SouthernMama15 donating your placenta? To who? Or what?
  • @SouthernMama15 is it for the stem cells?
  • @mrsmatt1212 this is the gist of it
  • @Southernmama15 but then you couldn't have placenta art in your home ;) (yes, I know of someone who did this)

  • @SouthernMama15 ok yes that's what I thought! I've heard of that. I'm encapsulating mine, but I'd be ok with donating. I think the caveat that most people have an issue with is that you have to be okay with it also being used in stem cell research. I think that's in the fine print.
