Progesterone Supplements

Is anyone else taking them? I got prescribed progesterone supplements today because my levels came back borderline for 5 weeks. My doctor told me to take them vaginally before bed until I'm 10 weeks. Has anyone else taken these in the past and had luck with getting your levels up?

*TW* I'm just a little nervous since my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage back in January. I had my MC at 5 1/2 weeks so getting through this week will be a huge milestone for me.

Re: Progesterone Supplements

  • @marisaloughney most IVF girls like me take these. Super fun (discharge, etc) but the doctors swear by them! Are you also doing the progesterone in oil (PIO) injections? With DD, I also had borderline low progesterone and with supplements , she's now 2.5

  • I take 400mg daily and did with DS as well. He will be 2 in August. My levels always improve within a few days.
  • I just started taking it tonight. My progesterone level at 5weeks is only 7.57.

*TW* My only successful pregnancy started with low progesterone (it was a 8). The prometrium helped and I have a healthy 6 yr old. Ironically, with both of my losses last year the progesterone levels were great.

I'm just happy to be on them! They're not super fun but my kiddo is proof they can work!

I took them for my previous 2 pregnancies, but orally. They seem to work for me!

I am taking endometrin until the 26th....well, that's when I am supposed to take them until (I will be 8 weeks). They said I can continue taking it for a few more weeks if it makes me feel better, which I will do until 10 weeks.  My levels are great. They upset my stomach at first but now I am fine.  I highly recommend some thin panty liners. The discharge is gross and uncomfortable.

  • Hey ladies!
I have been on Endometrin suppositories since day 2 after my IUI.(3/10/17) once in the am and once in the pm. ****TW I had two losses in 2016 TW****
We got to see the HB of our little babe for the first time this past Monday! My Dr said I can stop them in 1 1/2 weeks but that will put me at just shy of 8 weeks.  Little nervous about that because I hear women being on them till 10 weeks. But if that's  what my Dr says to do I will. And am looking forward to not having the discharge.
It's not too bad for me just every once and a while a little gush.
I am very hopeful that these progesterone suppositories are what will be helpful for us! How are you feeling @marisaloughney
  • Here too! Was just prescribed on Wednesday *tw* I had a m/c in November

I'm  on an oral prescription. 400mg a day!

  • On endometrin thrice daily and pantiliners don't do the trick for me... full on pads over here.....
  • Same here - dr. said I can stop around 8 weeks. I can do without all the "side effects"  ;)
  • I'm also taking progesterone vaginally twice a day for the whole first trimester! I also did it with my DD and since I have had losses before I think my doctor just wants to play it safe.

  • @jljeanblanc so you will be stopping at 8 weeks? That's what my Dr is telling me to do too. I trusted him so far , so that's what I'm planning to do.  but it's just so hard when so many women say that's too early!
  • @ShyTonia yes, that is exactly what my nurse said yesterday. I can handle a few more weeks!
  • I am so jealous of you ladies stopping soon!  I'm doing PIO and oh man it's not fun. I'm only 5w3d and I'll go another five weeks.

I'm going until 12 weeks, because that's what I feel comfortable with, and too much doesn't hurt. But mine are also oral and they don't bother me.
  • @pennstatecait Thanks!! I'm kinda jealous you're not having to do the shots. I never minded the shots in my belly before ER but these hurt and leave little bumps.  :(

  • @kmallery08 Yeah I'm not a fan of needles so I'm glad I don't have to do them. Have you ever done the inserts though? Wearing a pad all day is so not fun... But I definitely prefer it. You're a champ!

  • @PennStateCait Ha! I guess there are pluses and minuses to each, for sure. I did the inserts for my three iuis. I guess neither is really preferable. Just need time to speed up until my tenth week!

  • I am on progesterone vaginally as well. I got my BFP this weekend and was told to keep taking till 10 weeks.
  • I'm on compounded suppositories that are oil based and they are a hot mess... Like @dragonette505 even a pantyliner does not cut it!. I'm hoping to switch to the endometrin... My RE wants me on them until 12 weeks.

  • @wabash15 that does sound bad, but honestly my endometrin gives me fits too... but I bet less than something already oil based! eeeek!
  • I have taken ALL OF THEM. Suppositories (or, the mess they create) made my crotch itch and bleed.

PIO left me sore for months afterwards (WORD OF ADVICE - do not ice before the shot! If anything, heat it! And heat it right after the shot! This makes the liquid less viscous and you get less lumpies and pain).

Currently on pills because I griped so much. They make me a little dizzy, but they are 3000x better than the rest of that crap! HALLELUJAH!

  • @wabash15 ugh that's sounds horrible. This was my first time ever taking any sort of suppositories so I don't have much to base it on. From my experience with Endometrin it's been ok. I do it once at 6 am and once at 6pm. And change my pantyliner once maybe twice a day. And that's with little discharge. Every once and a while I get more of a feeling of a gush and it's mostly just clear. If you do switch to it I can recommend to be more gentle and try and aim slightly towards you back when inserting it. I was doing it more straight up and i scraped myself alittle. Good luck!
  • Does anyone have advice on DTD while on the vaginal inserts?
  • ShyTonia said:
Does anyone have advice on DTD while on the vaginal inserts?
@ShyTonia I basically told my hubs to use a condom.... figured that was the best way to keep
him from absorbing my progesterone.... dunno what the official advice is, tho
  • @ayamw And I thought I was the only one on both injections (1x every other day) and suppositories (2x daily)!  I tell myself it is all for a good cause!
  • It's comforting to know I'm not alone. Thanks for sharing your stories and experiences with me. Today will
be my 5th day on it and I've only experience some discharge but have been using a panty liner 24/7. I'll do anything to have heathy babe. Wishing you all the same!
  • @ShyTonia I told my DH that if he wanted to have sex to let me know before bed lol, so I can just put the progesterone in afterward.
  • @grochril yes that sounds like a good idea. My problem is staying awake. Haha. I do mine earlier to so I would literally have to rip his clothes off when he walked through the door from work. I have a appt tomorrow with the dr so I'll ask the details.
Also im so nervous about spotting alittle. It may not even happen, but I read it's common to have some cramping or very light spotting after DTD.  But that would freak me out! lol I'm getting nervous and none of this has even happened yet. Lol ok end rant.
  • so I asked my new Gyno about my other dr wanting to stop me a little after 8 weeks and he thought that was odd. So I finally double checked with the dr and the nurses said to def keep taking it to ATLEAST 10 weeks. That they don't know why he would have said that.
He def said to stop taking then after a couple of weeks which would have landed me at 8 weeks 2 days. Maybe I misunderstood him or vice versa. But even though the Endometrin can be annoying I am happy to say I'll be using up my supply and that will put me at about 11 weeks. Lol. I just feel more comfortable now to be taking them alittle longer :)
  • I'm taking prometrium 200mg, 4 times a day through the vaginal suppositories as of Friday since my levels have been dipping each time they have checked. I was hovering over 9 as of Friday. From reading this thread, mine seems like a lot of progesterone!   I'm using the thin panty liner and so far I haven't had issues other than amped up morning sickness and headaches. As far as sex, ha! That's not happening...sorry DH...

  • @holzie Definitely try heating it instead of icing it. I've been on 1mL PIO for about a month now, and I started out icing the area for the pain, but it just caused welts. DH is super sweet and massages the area for a few minutes before the shot, and a few minutes after. That seems to really help with the welts and the knots.

I have no advice for the pain at the injection site, because all of a sudden every time we go into my right hip, it hurts so bad I'm almost crying, but my left hip has no pain at all. Weird.

  • @kmallery08 @Holzie there are numbing patches you can get a prescription for called Synera.  You put the patch on for 30 minutes prior to the injection and you can't feel a thing.  The heat from the numbing patch actually helps the oil, too.  I only use them when I have time to put them on first, but if you are in a lot of pain from the shots already, it might be something to ask your clinic about.  Also, I always sit on a heating pad for at least 20 minutes after the injection and that seems to help!

I know our body's are all so different! @Marley629 I do twice a day 100 mg.  I can't imagine being on more, or stronger dose with how I feel with just my dose  :s
  • TMI warning. Lol. Just out of curiosity for the ladies that are on the vaginal inserts is your discharge always white or does it have a light yellowish tint to it sometimes? Sorry I know it's gross, and sorry to ask but I'd rather ask you guys then google  <3
