Thanks everyone!! @DPandMB the doctor we saw at the clinic did say that there's a chance he could not have any more flare ups for a long time, so that gave me hope! @mrsmarygs that's what I was thinking too, because he is so young and the diet part doesn't make sense at all. Ugh. @jena333-2 For now they've just prescribed him medicine to treat this flare up and if he doesn't have another one we probably won't do a long term medicine. She said she wouldn't do any long term medicine right now because starting it during a flare up could make the flare up worse... so that's dumb. Thanks for sharing your experience! It's good to know that it's manageable for sure. The doctor said gout before she even did the blood work, she just knew and I was like no way... he just sprained his ankle or something... nope!
Where was his flare up? I've never seen gout in a 23 year old unless there's some strong family history. Any other relatives with gout? The only definite diagnosis is to get an aspiration and see gout crystals in the fluid. If the pain goes away with the medication (which should have been a strong NSAID) then I wouldn't worry about it really. I hope that this is a one time thing for him!
@jessieR358 I know, I was so surprised too! Especially when she said it was gout even after the bloodwork..... he's not even 23 yet! He will be on the 18th of this month. It's just crazy! Poor guy. im hoping he doesn't have a lot of flare ups too. He was in so much pain they had to wheel him to the X-ray room! It wasn't even very swollen at all. Just a bad deal
