Strollers

I know this has come up a few times in other threads, but I thought it may need to be its own topic.

First - my experience:
I got a cheap umbrella stroller that I keep in my car for outings, etc, and a Chicco Activ3 jogging stroller when DD was born, and I have been really happy with them. I don't actually jog, but we spend a lot of time at the lake and so I "off-road" with the jogging stroller a lot and it's perfect for that as well as walks around the neighborhood. It has the brakes on the handle, a huge canopy, and a pretty spacious storage bin underneath. It is somewhat heavy and bulky, but that kind of goes with it being sturdy and not having to worry about it falling over, etc. It also stands when it folds up so I can just push it up against the wall in the entry way and keep it right there by the door without it being in our way.

Second - double stroller questions:
My mom has hinted she will get us a double stroller for DD's birthday (ha, score for me...) so I have been looking for a good fit for a 3yo and infant that is a front/back configuration rather than side-by-side. DD is kind of over riding in a stroller at this point as far as walks go, so we are definitely wanting to get one where the older kid can stand up on the back on a platform, and also have an option to sit down. Does anybody have any experience with this type and have any recommendations or recommendations or ones NOT to get? I've perused them in BRU, but it's just hard to tell how I'll like it by pushing it around for a minute down the aisle, so real-life advice is always helpful. I am guessing this will also determine what kind of infant seat we'll need to get (our old one sucks - really big and heavy - so I may just keep it for a backup or something) since I assume most of these will have an option to snap one in.

Anyway, hope this post is helpful for any stroller discussion or questions STM+s can help out with.

Re: Strollers

  • We are getting the Baby Jogger City Select Luxe. It converts to a double, and the luxe version has the board on the back like you want. It comes out end of May I think. But the regular city jogger is very very very close to the new model and is available to push around at Buy Buy Baby if you have that store near you. I walked into BRU and was like what? What even is this? I can't push strollers around!

  • I have a question! I didn't use a jogging stroller with DD but I'd like to with this baby. I've seen some jogging stroller/car seat combos. Would it be terrible for me to get just a jogging stroller only or would it be better to have both types of strollers?
  • @hatrats I've been so interested in the sit and stand double stroller as well! Following to see what recommendations people have on those!
  • @msashley2010-2 I assume by "both types" you are referring to just a standard stroller? I did not get a regular stroller besides the umbrella one. I found that between the jogger and umbrella, all my needs were met and I personally think it would have been a waste of our space and money to have a third "regular" stroller with both of those.

  • @msashley2010-2 we have a BOB revolution and thought it would be our only stroller for DS.  I'd recommend a smaller regular stroller or an umbrella stroller in addition to a jogger.  Joggers are usually fairly big, especially if you get one that's actually used to jog with, and though they are much easier IMO to push, they are also also cumbersome
  • @msashley2010-2 I really really want the BOB which is a bit on the investment end. But I think it's the only stroller I'll get (unless I get a crazy good deal on something used) but I think it can be done!
  • Thanks everyone! I'll definitely do my research!
  • @msashley2010-2 Everyone I know that has gone with a jogging stroller for regular use, has also gotten an umbrella stroller (think mall use, library, any quick outings in tight spaces) and/or one of the stroller frames to click the infant seat into for the early months. A jogging stroller can just be super bulky to lug around for everyday use BUT is totally amazing for everything outdoors.

@hatrats I second the Baby Jogger City Select for best all-around double with tons of versatility. My DDs are 19 months apart and it's been awesome to easily use both seats, just one seat (for if my older one was walking or the younger one was in a carrier), or to just use the frame for the infant carrier when my youngest was still tiny. And the storage basket is AMAZING. My middle DD and this new baby will be 23 months apart and I know it will continue to get plenty of use. I'm considering buying the glider board attachment for my oldest to use too!
  • I plan on getting the city select double stroller. I'll have to look into this new version!
We have the britax b agile and the bob for just our one. "We" have an Uppa baby g luxe--I say "we" because my mom bought it for me but refuses to let us use it. So its a great umbrella stroller but DH and I only take it on vacations. Honestly, I hardly ever use a stroller anymore with DS unless we're at the mall, zoo, or going somewhere where he needs to be in a seat.
I plan on getting the double stroller and a double bob and selling our britax b agile, but keeping the single bob stroller. Can I use the baby jogger as a light weight stroller too? Or would I need an umbrella stroller too?

Ok whoa, why is the city select lux almost $1000!!! The model out now is like $500 something. Does the new model come with a second seat already?

If this new model comes with a second seat I can see paying for it.  It also folds up
smaller which is always nice. This may be a "don't tell the husband" purchase lol. I need to get to buy buy baby and look at these.

@msashley2010-2 You will need a regular stroller as well, if you want to go that route rather than using a carrier.  Joggers are not recommended for children under at least six months of age, until they can properly hold their heads up by themselves.

ETA bc I missed the part about the car seat combo.  It would be fine to use the jogger if the baby is in the car seat, just not in the jogger stroller itself until they are older.

@jessieR358 What?? I heard it was only 100 dollars more than the current model. So 600 is really expensive, but for a convertible double stroller.. it's less than the uppa baby counterpart!
ETA : I see it going for 629.99 currently. And no, unfortunately it does not come standard with a second seat.

On piccolinobaby.com, they are selling the 2016 model in Onyx (black seats) that was an open box for 429.99. I think that's a steal!  It has a board to attach to the bottom bar in the back for kiddo to stand on but no jump seat to sit on like the new model.

@sugargirl1019 That's for the single apparently.

I'm so confused. I see $629 on some sites too. I'll have to just go into a store and figure this out. I can't figure out if you get the second seat if you buy it as a double.

  • @sugargirl1019 That's for the single apparently.
You have to buy the second seat, which you're right is selling for 199. So a total of 829.99.  Plus your car seat connector piece.. and the jump seat...  :s

ColoradoHiker the jogger I got (Baby Jogger City Mini) can lay almost completely flat. If I use it laying flat, can baby go in before 6 months?

ETA: this is the best picture I could find, it's the double, but I've already packed my single back up into the box:  https://www.madeformums.com/podimages/REVIEWS/Baby Jogger City Mini double/Baby-Jogger-City-Mini-Double-10.gif

Also check out the FAQ on the City Mini brand page. The company states it is not safe for jogging and only intended for walking.

@jenna333 The best I can offer is what @Sugargirl1019 said.  Check the company's website and see what the recommendations are there.  Laying flat is not necessarily an indicator that the jogger is okay for a very young baby, especially if it does not have any head support.  I would check the recommendations for all of the jogger strollers you might consider. They have them for safety reasons, and strongly encourage you to follow them.

I also would like to point out that you're probably not supposed to jog with the babies in the stroller/ infant seat combo while actually still in the infant seat.  That's something to check up on as well.

  • Baby jogger does make jogging strollers! I happened to see it on the website.
You aren't supposed to jog with the baby in the infant seat because of all the head jiggling..that's what I found anyways on google when I looked into that with DS.
  • With my first I got a Britax b-ready stroller bc it was compatible with many infant seats. Then when my daughter was born, we got the 2nd seat. We also got a Bob duallie which is the side by side double - we use it to this day at the zoo or long hikes and my kids are 5 & 3. You can get an adapter to use it with an infant seat.  We also at some point ended up with an "umbrella" stroller called Mountain Bubby Echo bc it folds into basically a suitcase size which we stashed in front of our feet on a plane. We used that with our oldest when baby was born and used a Tula carrier with her. This baby will be in an infant car seat that will click into the Chicco caddy frame stroller - mostly bc our older two do not use strollers anymore. If we do the zoo, we will still bring the BOB and put baby in the Tula. So many baby products lol
  • @jena333 we used our BOB with our DS from day one, without the infant carrier.  We asked the pedi and he said no jogging with him in it until 6 months but if he's laying flat it should be fine.  obviously this is a judgement call, my son had good head control early on and we also used the extra head support thing that came in our car seat just incase. If you are not going to be jogging with it and you feel safe don't feel bad about using it.  Obviously I'm no doctor so I'm sure some will disagree but really use your head and you'll make the right decisions.

    I'm stuck in quote boxes!
I wouldn't recommend compromising on baby's safety in this situation. The BOB really isn't meant to accomodate a newborn and I wouldnt suggest using products made by another company in their strollers. Just know that strollers can tip, so they need to be safe like a car seat when that happens. I really like the BOB, but unless you're going to use the infant attachment, I wouldn't suggest using it right away.
  • As a side note: BOB specifically recommends NOT running w the car seat attachment for safety reasons although I see it done a lot. I am thinking when the time comes I will consult w a doctor and see if perhaps using it to run laps on a nice flat track would be acceptable.
  • I'm actually not sure if Baby Jogger makes ANY jogging strollers O.o
They do. It's called the Summit X3 and it's the jogger I had with DD. I loved it and trained for a marathon with it. I'll probably be getting a double jogger this time and looking at both the Summit X3 or a Bob.

  • @MrsJessS yes, we definitely didn't jog with the car seat attachment.  Truthfully the car seat attachment is very lose and makes the stroller extremely top heavy even just walking.  They don't snap in as tight as I would have liked and we definitely had the correct attachment. This is why I questioned the pedi on using it without the car seat before recommended time frame.  I love my BOB but will say on top of their initial expense, the car seat attachment and tray are not included and will be close to an additional $100, so it could get expensive, especially just for every day use.  My husband is a marathon runner and a teacher so we made the investment knowing he'd be doing quite a bit of running with DS over the summers.

@jillibean0871 good to know they are fairly loose! Might look for a cheaper travel system until baby can go in regular BOB seat. Or at least price compare. I run ultranmarathons (obviously not at the moment) so I will absolutely need one eventually. Currentl stretch goal is a 60k 9 months post partum. But we will see

ETA we also live in rural Texas so even walking down the sidewalks might require a stroller with off road capabilities hahaha
  • @MrsJessS good look on the 60k!  I'm hoping to run a half 7 months post partum.  I was up to 6 1/2 miles before getting pregnant, hoping I'll bounce back quick but I'm old so it's probably wishful thinking.  We live in town so the sidewalks were always decent as were the roads. But yes the car seat adapter did not feel good to me for even walking any type of distance.   Early on we wore DS a lot.  It gave me the chance to get some decent walks in without the stroller.  Once you start running again though I wouldn't recommend anything other than a BOB, it's the real deal.
  • @jillibean0871 thanks! I just found out about the series I am aiming for this past weekend. And it's probably going to be a disaster but worth a shot. All the races in the series are loops so I would go through the camp area a few times which would make pumping/breastfeeding easier! If we make it that far like I hope!
The onlg other running stroller I would consider is the Thule which seems pretty popular as well. I need to test drive one!
  • We did the BRU trade in deal! We got the Graco Modes Duo and we've taken it out to Disney several times just with my DD who is 2. It is such a smooth ride and I really Enjoy how easy it is to move around crowds! We love that we went with the Modes Duo

I was just looking at these online today and wondering how they were, so glad you posted! When LO is born we'll have an almost 3 year old and I liked how he could be strapped in or stand. Plus we already have the click connect. How much trunk room does it take up?

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • @iheartichi it takes up most of my Jeep Liberty's tiny trunk. However it's a relatively flat fold I just take the seats off before I fold it and put them on top. Then if we go to the store I can just pile them on top :) our DD will be 2.5years old when baby comes and she seems to prefer the seat to the bench of standing but I like that the option is available for her!
  • @klcarr19 thanks! I'm glad it folds flat. I liked how it looked with such a big space underneath! There was another graco double one that was a little cheaper, but the reviews said the basket underneath was small and hard to get to with an infant seat. Looks like this one may be it!
