Re: Maternity/Paternity Leave

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? Technically I don't have maternity leave, but I have FLA for 8 weeks, and can use whatever PTO I have accrued (will be about 6 weeks pay).
-When will you start it? Once baby is born.
-How long will your SO get? 6 weeks paid leave. Yes, you read that right, he has better paternity benefits than I do for maternity.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave?
-Other comments: I have decided to cut back on my hours now until baby. This will be FMLA, butnot cut into my leave and I'll take the pay cut so I can keep my PTO for leave.

How much time will you get for maternity leave? We get 12 weeks upaid FMLA unless we use our vacation and sick time. So, I'll have about 8.5 weeks or so saved up (had to take 2 days last week, so a little less). I can then spread out the remaining days throughout the rest of the year if I'd like, which I will probably do. They are unpaid unless I've accrued some.

When will you start it? They have me listed as starting on my EDD. I'm debating on seeing if I can take the th/fri off before (EDD is on a Sunday) just because we live so far from the hospital that maybe I'll stay with my parents who are like 20 minutes away. Obviously if something happens and he comes early then I'll start then. Really trying to work as long as I can so my time can be with the little guy.

How long will your SO get? I think he qualifies for unpaid FMLA, but not sure how much. He can use his sick and vacation I think, but his work is being ridiculous about it and keeps telling him he can only take the day of the birth off. Whatever. I think he might spread out his time and take a few days or so and then take more time off before I go back to work and when his mom gets here. He has 2 weeks saved of vacation and a little less for sick because he took the 2 days off last week as well. He may accrue them back by the time baby comes, but I doubt it. His bosses are pretty nice though and tell him to leave if I call and I'm having issues like last week. They are like screw this place that's more important! Well, one of them is really that way haha

    FTM :)

ETA: forgot about short term disability...I have that as well and will get paid 2/3 or 3/4 I can't remember. I think it starts right after my sick is used up, but it doesn't extend my time, just gives me more money lol which is good! I think it is 2 weeks for standard delivery and 4-6 for c-section if that happens. I'm really bad at remembering these days and that was all discussed at the beginning of my pregnancy!

  • I am taking 12 weeks.  There is no official policy at my work.  I am using 6 weeks of vacation and I also have short term disability so I'll be collecting that for my leave.
I am planning on starting my maternity leave (or MOM-LA as my partners call it) once LO is born.  I am hoping and my group is hoping to get as close to due date as possible bc they have coverage plans for June but not so much for May.  I am a little superstitious so I am afraid my final call weekend at the beginning of May will end up being the time...(I'm due 5/29).  I feel like a call weekend is just asking for it to happen...

SO gets zero time.  He has some vacation so he will take a few days and also "work from
home" a little bit while me and LO are home.  @jayandaplus your SO having six weeks paid is amazing!!!

Other comments:  I am so lucky they have been willing to find coverage for a 12 week maternity leave.  I know it is the standard in many developed countries to have a year or whatnot, but it is hard and expensive for them to find coverage for me to be off so long and I feel they have been very generous considering the piddly maternity leave laws in the US.

  • How much time will you get for maternity leave?
3 months fmla. Of that time two weeks are paid full time from my pto then 4 weeks are paid at 60 percent pay from my hospital if I happen to need a c section they pay an additional 2 weeks. If I don't have enough time in my pto bank to pat myself the full two weeks I get what ever I have then have to wait for the 60 percent to take over.
    -When will you start it?
    EDD
-How long will your SO get?
Whatever vacation time he's willing to use. Most likely two weeks paid he's got the option of fmla no idea if he'll use it
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave?  He'll be going to daycare. His daycare requires he be active 3 days at least to keep his spot and that's only 49 dollars cheaper than full time so even if we don't take him 100 percent of the time it's worth it to have the option to

-How much time will you get for maternity leave? I honestly don't know, because I never looked into it since I'll be a SAHM. I work for a very small business, so I'm guessing my only option would have been applying for unpaid FMLA.
-When will you start it? I'm leaving work at the end of this month, so I have about a month off before my EDD. I'm now very glad I'm taking that much time, as work has been incredibly stressful as of late and will continue to be that way until I'm gone. My H even said he'd be perfectly fine with me quitting now, seeing how awful it's been lately (I appreciate his support).
-How long will your SO get? He gets 6 weeks paid if he's using his accrued vacation/sick time (which he has like 3 months of banked, so it's not even depleting that). He could still have up to 6 weeks unpaid if he didn't have accrued time off to use. He will be taking 4 weeks and we'll go from there (he can take more if needed, or start working from home earlier if things are going well).
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? N/A
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? 12 weeks through FMLA. I have to use all of my sick and personal time, which amounts to about 6 weeks, and then I am choosing to not use my vacation time, and will be unpaid for the second 6 weeks.  I signed up for AFLAC when we started TTC, so I'll use that money via short term disability, to cover the next 6 weeks.
-When will you start it? As soon as I go into labor/get induced.
-How long will your SO get? None.  He runs his own business and is the only employee.  We are just starting his season now-ish so he will be with me in the hospital, and likely that is it.  My mother is retired and MIL is a mile away from us, so I know I'll have support if/when needed.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? FTM but my puppy who is my "first child" will hang out with me during my leave.   :p
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? I'll take 5 weeks in the school
year then the summer off. I get 6-8 depending on VBAC or csection, but run into summer so won't use it all.

-When will you start it? My dr just wrote me out after the 5th, which is 2 weeks before EDD since I get paid for the time anyway. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

-How long will your SO get? He gets whatever FMLA covers unpaid, but will take 1 week vacation then work from home the second week.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? Normal preschool/daycare schedule at first, then home with me for most of the week in the summer. We pay for 2 days in the summer to keep her spot in daycare, so I'll send her 1-2 days a week.

-How much time will you get for maternity leave? Technically there is no real "maternity" leave. I get and combination of unpaid and FMLA and short term disability.  After that, I have to use any accrued vacation/sick time, and then its unpaid. Basically I'll have some kind of income in the door for about 6-8 weeks, even if it's not 100%.  ETA: I'll be off work for 12 weeks with the FMLA policy.

-When will you start it? I'm going to continue to work as close to my due date as possible. None of my benefits can kick in until the baby is born, but with DS I had arranged to work from home for the time between my due date and when my doctor would have wanted to induce. I'll probably do the same this time, especially considering we're in a super slow time at the moment with no asset to work!

-How long will your SO get? Nothing, really. He doesn't even qualify for unpaid FMLA because he started a new job in October. He's going to try to take a week of vacation, maybe a little more if he's accrued it by then.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DS is going to continue to go to daycare. We talked through the idea of keeping him at home while I am, but he really thrives on a schedule, so we've decided not to change his world too much. I feel like he'll probably end up going for shorter days than he does when I'm working, but I just think it's for the best.

How much time will you get for maternity leave? I can take as much time as my Dr. says I need (I think up to 12 ish weeks). However, I have 4 weeks at 60% pay (STD), then I have 18 days of PTO, 10 of which I'll use, and TBD if I'll do 2 weeks at no pay to give me a whole 8 weeks. I think with H's new job, I should ;)

-When will you start it? As soon as I go into labor unless I have to stop working before then

-How long will your SO get? He inquired with the new job and doesn't qualify for paid leave, but does for FMLA. He said he thinks he will take a week of PTO. We're not too worried since he works from home anyway.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave?

Other: I'm only using 10 of my 18 PTO day's so that I'll still have time the rest of the year for vacation or just time off.

  • -How much time will you get for
    maternity leave
? I am taking 10 weeks paid leave and 2 weeks unpaid for a total of 12 weeks.

    -When will you start it?
I will start leave a week before my due date. I did the same with my son and it worked well!

-How long will your SO get?
Mu husband gets 2 weeks paid leave so he will take that.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? My son will be 20 months at the time and I am planning to leave him in daycare so that I can focus on baby during the day. He loves school and playing with his friends so I think he will do better staying with his routine.

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? I have enough sick days to cover my 6 weeks, but my leave will run into summer break, so I won't have to use all my days.
-When will you start it? I'm working until I either go into labor or get told I can't work anymore.
-How long will your SO get? I believe he will get a week.

Maternity leave in our country sucks. I feel lucky that's I'm due in May, so that my leave will blend with summer and will give me more time with the baby boy. I also hate how my husband can't have more time to bond with baby.
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? 12 weeks FMLA leave. Of that I get weeks 2-8 paid at 60% from STD and then my company provides 2 weeks pay at 100% as parental leave. so overall i'll have 1 week unpaid at first and 2 weeks unpaid at the end.
-When will you start it? My c-section is scheduled for 4/24 (monday) so I plan to work until that friday. I might take Thursday and Friday off as vacation days, but i'm not sure yet.
-How long will your SO get? He can take up to 12 weeks FMLA and use vacation time for pay. He has about a week and a half of vacation time accrued so I think he is going to take 2 weeks off.
He will have a comp day from working the weekend before for the actual day of my c-secation. Then he is a marketer that's based out of the hospital I'm delivering at. So he's actually going to work that first week and my mom is going to help out at the hospital and the few days i'm home that week. So he can take the full 2 weeks he has off when we are at home. That and between him and my mom i'll have 24/7 help for 3 weeks.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DD is going to go to daycare full time 4 of the weeks, part time some of the weeks, and be home with me probably the last 4 weeks.

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? 16 weeks paid at 100%, a combo of STD and company provided leave.  This is better than what they provided when I had my son, and I feel very fortunate.
-When will you start it? Hoping to work up until baby gets here, but we will see.  I may go out a little early if things get too uncomfortable (or if my team members start annoying me too much with "What, no baby?!" comments)
-How long will your SO get? He works a shop manager for a farm and with harvest just beginning, it will probably only get about a week
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? Our daycare provider just went back to work, but I do plan on having my toddler spend one day a week with each Grandma to give me some time with just the baby. We will see how it goes! Moms who already have 2: was it really challenging at first trying to nurse/take care of a newborn and deal with your toddler's needs? I feel like last time I was in total survival mode for the first 6 weeks or so, and I cannot imagine doing it with another child along for the ride!

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? I'm taking an extended leave so it will be about 4 months.  My daughter pre-school won't start until September so instead of going back to work in August I'll go in the beginning of September.
-When will you start it? My c-section is scheduled for May 8th but I'm going to start it the week before.
-How long will your SO get? Two weeks.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DD is goign to go to Kindercare twice a week back in our old hometown (about a half hour away).  We LOVED it there and it's basically like camp.  Other than that she'll be home with us.

  • This doesn't apply to me since I'm a SAHM. DH does get at least 4 weeks paid paternity leave. He will probably use about 2 weeks plus 2 weeks of PTO since he has a bunch, then save the other 2 weeks of paternity for later in the year.

I just wanted to point out that anybody that work/live in CA can get paid through the state, in case we have someone that has no idea. I would have never known had someone not said something on my last BMB and probably would have missed out. I was working full time at Target all the way up until I had DD, but they do not provide paid leave for non-exempt team members. I was able to get 50% through the state instead (based on my average hours). Better than nothing!

  • How much time will you get for maternity leave? 16 weeks

    When will you start it
? The day before the scheduled c-section

How long will your SO get
? His work newly does six weeks paid paternity leave (yea!), so he'll do four weeks in the beginning, and then two weeks when I head back to work.  He'll also use a few vacation weeks here and there throughout my leave.

STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave
?  We're still paying for DS for full-time daycare, but we'll probably just bring him a day or two per week to keep up a bit of a routine for him.
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? Doesn't really apply as I will be a SAHM/part time photographer but I am not booking any photo shoots until August.
-When will you start it? I stopped shooting in March as I can't get around and being on the floor is a main part of my job.
-How long will your SO get? He has 5 weeks of vacation saved so he will take 3 when baby comes and then some long weekends or days here and there throughout the year.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? My fur babies will be home and or go to daycare depending on the weather/if they are driving me nuts
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? I'm PRN (per diem), so none. What I do have is flexible scheduling, so I've told my boss that I won't be available for 12 weeks.

-When will you start it? The week of my due date.

-How long will your SO get? He is allowed to take up to 16 weeks FMLA for the birth of a child. It's only paid if he uses sick leave or annual leave. Luckily, he has accrued quite a bit of sick leave the past few years so he'll be cashing that in. He's going to take 2 solid weeks off after she's born and then he's going to take intermittent FMLA and will take every Wednesday off for another month or two to give me a mid-week break while DD1 is home on summer vacation.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? I'm due 5/11 and then she has school (kindergarten) through the third week of June. She'll then have 5 and a half weeks off for summer break. We signed her up for one week of full-day summer camp and then she'll be home with me for the rest of the time, so I'll have to be brave and venture out with the 2 of them or I'm sure I'll (we'll) go crazy with cabin fever.

-When will you start it? When I deliver.
-How long will your SO get? 10 calendar says per army policy and he has tentative approval to take a week of leave after that as long as nobody else has vacation scheduled for the same time.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DAYCARE! We will be moving about 6 weeks in and I am planning to get him started somewhere new as soon as humanly possible after the move.

-How much time will you get for maternity leave?
6 weeks paid and 6 weeks unpaid.

    -When will you start it?
This was news to me because our policy is very poorly written -- I'm allowed to start it at the start of the next semester, as I am a professor and though we DO work over the summer (research), it is basically on our own time and not supervised/scheduled. The fall & spring semesters are when we teach and that follows a strict schedule of course. I thought I'd basically be getting no leave (i.e. giving up my research time to take care of my baby & self, yet still expected to have this research done when I go up for tenure), but instead I will be able to use it in the semester, which means I will just not teach at all in the fall; they'll fill in the other two weeks with two weeks' worth of non-teaching work like administrative things and curriculum development. That way, in the fall I will be able to catch up on lost time from the summer.

Oh and I should mention that my spring semester ends a couple of days before my due date so I will be working up until the end. If I have the baby a little early then it's not a big deal; I will get someone to proctor my exams but will still basically be working through the birth and postpartum to finish the classes. If I had my baby way early (like tomorrow) I'm not sure what would happen, but I'd maybe come STRAIGHT back to work (with the baby!) so that I could preserve the fall leave. Taking the next 5 weeks as my leave instead would be a huge problem for my students because no one could finish out the semester in my stead. So this baby MUST come close to on time. Luckily I've done this twice before and wasn't particularly early before (4 days early once and 4 days late the second time.)

-How long will your SO get?
12 weeks unpaid...so yeah we will be short on cash but we think our savings are sufficient. It also depends on whether DH gets a new job soon; he is looking.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave?
They are in school/camp full time! There are a few week-long gaps here and there and some of the camps are only about 9-3pm (i.e. not sufficient for parents who are actually working fulltime) but yeah I don't want to mess with having them around, so mostly they are not around.

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? 12 weeks total - 6 weeks paid plus whatever vacation time I decide to use, the rest is unpaid.

    -When will you start it
? Planning on working until I go into labor

-How long will your SO get? 1 week.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DS has an amazing daycare lady who said she wouldn't charge me to hold his spot. She said I could bring him in whenever I wanted and pay by the day if I needed a break or he wanted to come play with his friends.

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? 14 weeks at 50% pay. I'm hoping to be able to take more time but we will see. (Apparently, and I'm not sure if this is just CA, but as long as your doctor says that you can't return to work you are considered on disability. You should be able to be paid from the state while on disability and then take your FMLA after that, 6 weeks paid and 6 weeks unpaid. Ideally, I'm hoping that I can talk my doctor into not giving me clearance to go back to work for 17-18 weeks and adding the 6 weeks paid FMLA on top of that for 6 total months of leave. We'll see if it works out.)

-When will you start it? We are most likely scheduling a CS for 5/26. If I don't go into labor before then, I will probably start 5/24.

-How long will your SO get? He just started a new job, so he gets not leave. He will probably take 3 days unpaid.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DD goes to preschool 3 days a week and will continue through the end of June. I will pull her out for July and August to save some money and then she will go back in September. I will need lots of activities for those two months.
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? Because I'm self employed I can take as long as I'd like for leave, catch is it is all unpaid!! I have told the program coordinators to expect at least 8 weeks of me being gone
-When will you start it? Hoping to start 4/24, which is also the day I am hoping to be induced
-How long will your SO get? He is exactly the same as me, so he will probably work a little and be home for periods of time. We will probably see when the demand is the highest at home and go from there.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave?15 and 11yr old will be at school and then come home, 1yr old will stay on his daycare routine which is stay home one day and full days the other 4
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? 16 weeks FMLA, but part of that is 6-8 weeks short term disability at 2/3 pay, and the 5-6 weeks I've accrued/hoarded in paid vacation and sick time. I'm planning to take 12-13 weeks paid and use the extra unpaid days as needed later.

    -When will you start it
    ? Whenever labor starts.

-How long will your SO get
? 18 weeks, full pay. He's taking it after I go back to work, so someone will be home with the kiddo until about November.

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? I get 6 weeks unpaid through FMLA and 12 week so of baby bonding unpaid. I'll using vacation and sick days for 7-8 weeks paid and then will stay unpaid through the end of July. I'll go back part time august (I have childcare issues in August) and then full time in september

-When will you start it? Day I got into labor/may 3rd for induction

-How long will your SO get? He is using 5 days of vacation.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? She will hang out with us through out the summers. I anticipate lots of walks, park days, etc. DH, baby, and I will be out of the country for most of July and she will be with my parents doing fun stuff (zoo trips, the fair, etc). Then in September she will start preschool

-When will you start it? Trying to wait until baby comes.
-How long will your SO get? He has to use his 3 weeks of vacation pay first and then he has 8-12 weeks. He will most likely use his 3 weeks when the baby comes and then the rest when I go back to work.
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave?
maternity leave is 15 weeks, and I have that added to 35 weeks of parental leave. I've taken 15 weeks of sick leave before baby comes too since I have sciatica and can't do 12 hr shifts anymore and chase my toddler around  (props to the other nurse shift workers on the board for working up till your due date!)
    -When will you start it?
    i started at 25 weeks
-How long will your SO get?
he's not using the parental leaves as his work is too busy this time of year- but he will be using some vacation time like he did for DD!
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave?
DD (18 months) will be home with me and baby- hopefully DD2 is fairly easy going so we can get outside lots this summer! Last summer DD was still crawling but with her running around now, there's a lot of trips I want to do like the beach, splash park, zoo, lots of park time etc.

-How much time will you get for maternity leave? I get 4 months at 100% pay which is completely amazing. Plus 2 weeks before due date if I choose to take it.

-When will you start it?  My plan right now is to start leave when I go into labor, my client schedule might not allow for taking the 2 weeks before the due date so that's up in the air. Since I'm due over Memorial Day weekend even taking the 1 week before due date only gives me 3 extra days off.

-How long will your SO get?  Husband gets nothing officially, but his boss is giving him 2 weeks paid and keeping his on-call schedule clear through august.

-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? FTM!

  • It's so interesting how different it is for everyone.

I'm pretty jealous of a lot of you with such generous policies !

How much time will you get for maternity leave? 6 weeks at 60% pay for vaginal delivery or 8 weeks at 60% for c section. Then I will use my pto so I will be off for a total of 12 weeks.

-When will you start it? Whenever I go into labor.

-How long will your SO get? A week paid and then he can use however much pto he wants. Last time I was ready for him to get out of my hair after a week. When I return to work he will take some time off to make the transition easier.

My daycare is also pretty flexible and will hold his spot for the summer. I will likely have him go 1 day a week so that he's not too overwhelmed when he has to return.
  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave?
Because I'm having a csection I get 12 weeks paid (paid bc I'm allowed to use my sick time).  I'm hoping to take more time off afterwards (would like to stay out for a total of 5 months) but I only have 2 options.... Personal leave - unpaid and will end up being very expensive because I carry the health insurance.... or fully paid extended medical leave - if something occurs that warrants a doctor's note.  I can't even begin to fathom what would occur after 12 weeks that would warrant a note... so I doubt this will be an option.

    -When will you start it?
We are not allowed to start "maternity leave" until the day the baby is born. If I need to go out early it will just be equivalent to calling in sick and thus won't affect the 12 weeks allowed after.

-How long will your SO get?
Technically he get's nothing.  Which pisses me off to no end.  He has shitty vacation time compared to his last job (only 2 weeks) and has to use that when the baby arrives.  He also doesn't get family sick time.  I can't even explain how ragey I get when I think about his shitty paternity leave situation.

DS is 3 years and goes to full time daycare while me and DH work.  He'll continue doing that when the baby is here.

  • -How much time will you get for maternity leave? I get 6 weeks STD at 70% (? I think. I purchased the increased policy. But can't remember how much pay it is). Then I am currently in debate with HR whether I'm eligible for FMLA. I'm right at the cusp of hours worked since I'm part time and no one can seem to understand why my calculations are different than theirs. Luckily my manager has said she'll give me "personal leave" for the other 6 weeks so I'm planning to be off 12 weeks. I've decided to stay at my current job as an RN where I work part time (2 12-hr shifts per week) for a while vs pursuing a new job as an NP as that would presumably be 4-5 days/week. So as awful as going back already sounds I will still be able to be home 5 days/week which is pretty amazing.
-When will you start it? The day I go into labor is the plan. SPD is throwing a bit of a wrench in the plan but I'm going to try to tough it out.
-How long will your SO get? He gets 2 weeks paid and is then eligible for FMLA up to 12 weeks unpaid. I think we will have him take the full 2 weeks right away and then apply for FMLA to cover days when I need to work and we have childcare fall through etc as I will be out of PTO at work and MH is salaried and no one seems to keep track of his "sick days" very closely.
  • This has been so interesting (and kinda sad) to read through. I wish all of us and our SO's had more time.

-How much time will you get for maternity leave?
Uncertain. I will definitely get 6 weeks (8 if c-section) because that will be about the time Dr will approve me for work. I discovered I work just short to qualify for FMLA, so it is a bit concerning that my job is not secure. I do not anticipate any issues though. I do plan on talking to my boss about taking vacation time to extend my time past when the dr approves. I have finally worked up the courage, but he was on vacation this week.
-When will you start it? I work part time (Tuesday -Thursday) and I do not anticipate working past my due date (Tuesday), so my last day will be the Thursday before my due date at the latest. It is getting more likely that I may not be in the week before my due date.
-How long will your SO get? He is a professor and for the first time does not have summer plans, so he will be out until he needs to return for course prep in August. He does plan on starting his private practice side gig in July, but that would only be one or two days a week.
-STM+, what will your older kids do while you're on leave? DS is watched by my mother and MIL while I work. They usually do this at my house because all of his things are here, but I am hoping we can drop him off or have them pick him up at least a couple days a week. It would be ideal if he could spend the night there once in a while, but he isn't game for that yet.
