@vflux33@LuND YES. See, with my anxiety about gambling, I would much rather just pay for drinks (somewhere where they're reasonably priced, that is) than gamble and get "free" drinks. DH is more into gambling (not huge amounts or anything, though) so he doesn't see it that way.
But this is probably moot anyway because Vegas is the last place we'd go now while TTC or if I get KU!
UO: I don't prescribe to the modern thought of "experiences over things." Sorry. Things all the way. I don't have a travel bug. I could stay within a 3-hour radius of my house most of my life and die happy. I'd rather live comfortably and never go anywhere than live on a budget and see the world.

Hmmm. Interesting. I guess I'm team "budget for what you want." I love me some luxury items, but I also require travel. With a little foresight we have both.
This makes me sad to hear Vegas might not be as fun now that I'm older. I went when I was 25 with a group of girlfriends, and it was AWESOME, even better than I thought. I always figured I'd go back with my H and some couple friends, and we'd have a blast gambling and eating. You guys are crushing my dreams!
@hartmich I never went when I was younger, but I did go for a night on my way to Napa last year (met DH there). I'd heard so many people say they loved Vegas, but it's definitely not for me - I don't gamble and have asthma so all the smoking really bothered me. I also don't really like crowds, so it was just too much
Sorry @hartmich! You could still like it. It is an Unpopular opinion after all--I'm closing in on 34 and I know people my age who still like it (of course a lot of them are either single guys or people I know who are in their 20s so maybe scratch that).
@LoveInDC I used to be more into travel than things, but have slowly come closer to your camp over the years. MH and I discovered lately that we are so curmudgeon-y and set in our ways that whenever we go somewhere we have trouble sleeping and miss being home. Also now that I've discovered how badly traveling destroys my cycles, not as much of it seems worth it. I like the idea of increasing creature comforts at home better. When I do think of travel, I imagine a future more wealthy self who doesn't have to rough it to save a few dollars and travels in luxury.
@LoveInDC I'm with you. Although I would really love to travel and I'm kind of sad that I haven't much, we don't have too much disposable income. I know we could save up, but we're not the kind of people to deprive ourselves of dinners out, or going to the movies or sporting events or whatever (and also certain things, too, like clothes, etc). And that's how I prefer it. If we had more money, then I'd totally love to travel! Except right now all savings will be going to our RE fund.
I lived in FL for a year and never went to disney. I have no interest in going without children. I agree that it's a bit strange to me adults spend so much money to go to disney without children. There are just so many other places I would rather go... including to the Caribbean!
@lavenderfields13 I moved out of my parents house when I was 18 to go to college and never moved back. However, I continued to use the same cheap horrible home goods that I bought while in college until my H and I got married. I purposely held off buying things because I knew we would register for that stuff once we got married. I'm not even kidding you that our flatware was rusting when we finally got new stuff. So I'm completely onboard with wedding showers regardless of how long someone has lived on their own. However, wedding showers for second marriages or baby showers for second children is another story.
I'm also not a huge fan of most picnic food.
@kmalls@LoveInDC I love traveling but I also like nice things. I think along the same lines my UO is that I see no problem with buying a thousand dollar handbag. I know it's crazy to spend that much money on a material object but I'm materialistic at times and I don't know why that's always seen as a bad thing! I'm not going to put myself into debt to afford nice things but I may choose Louie Vuitton over a trip to disney or the Caribbean.
@hartmich My UO I guess is that I LOVE Vegas. DH and I go at least once a year. We live in Denver so it's an easy hour flight. We take the first flight out Saturday morning (we have SW companion pass and a ton of points), go straight to the pool, drink and hangout. Then we do a little gambling, take a nap, go to a fancy dinner and a show (highly recommend any of the cirque shows!), gamble some more and go to bed. Then we wake up, pool, go to the cosmo buffet brunch, gamble, and hop on an afternoon flight.

I have mixed feelings on Vegas. I've been twice for long weekends, that last time just last month. I went with my aunt both times and she paid for the majority of the trip. We don't usually do the typical stuff. We went out to red rock canyon for a day trip, which was amazing. We don't really gamble and don't drink much. We have seen a couple great concerts, and I saw my first Cirque du Soleil show which exceeded my expectations. Most of the food we had was excellent, but again, I wasn't solely paying for all of it (I did pay for a couple of our meals and we split some others).
Honestly, it was never on my radar, and I probably wouldn't have gone if she hadn't invited me. I think it can be a lot of fun if you have the right expectations. You don't have to gamble or go to cheesy shows. My favorite activities there have been red rock canyon and people watching and some excellent food. It was fun for what it is, but I don't blame anyone for not wanting to lay out the money to do all those things. It can be pricey.

@kmalls I think you missed my point. I definitely live with both and can afford/budget for both. Lord knows my husband buys every tech gadget as it's released. We just took our honeymoon in November to CA and I mentioned in the weekly randoms that we're going to Orlando in June.
My point was that many millennials see a romanticism in renting a tiny apartment and traveling across the world at a whim. If I had to choose between that life and one with zero travel but a huge house and things, I would choose the house and things every time.
TL;DR - If the question is "either/or," it's cheating to say "both"
@BreezyBee I hate the McMansions as well. I grew up in a NJ suburb and in the early 2000s they started randomly knocking down houses and replacing them with the big, stupid McMansions. The lots they were using to build these houses were not meant to hold a house that big (they were maybe a quarter acre), so they would end up building on whatever space they could legally build on, leaving these houses with NO yard. This just made them look even stupider, since you have this huge house with a patch of grass out front the size of a welcome mat.
@JJMNO1616 LOL at the rusty flatware. We're still using a lot of the same stuff from when we moved into an apartment together years ago too. I just ask our parents/grandmother for household stuff when they ask what we want for Christmas now. I didnt like the idea of picking out things for people to buy me, and then possibly feeling like they HAVE to come to a shower and give a gift when we already had basic stuff because we chose to move out on our own. I am definitely in the minority on this UO. Almost everyone thinks I'm nuts lol
I've gotta jump on the Disney/wedding issues. I have a family member who loves Disney. It was cute when we were all little kids, but now she's in her 30s. She almost ended up doing a Disney destination wedding, but when she found out how much it was, she decided to skip that. Almost every gift on her registry and Etsy cart was Disney-themed. That's just waaay too much Disney for me! I can't imagine what her husband thought of all of that. Disney overload!

Dark chocolate is foul and I hate when restaurants have dessert menus that are all chocolate on chocolate on flourless chocolate with more chocolate. I feel bad when someone tries to give me a special treat and gives me dark chocolate. I have some type of sensitivity to it and I feel like instant garbage.
Vegas is fun in certain doses. I love going in the summer when it's blazing hot and just making my way all the way down the strip buying a cheap giant beer that's almost too big to hold in one hand, watching the lunatics, and popping into casinos to play a bit of slots (only the ones with surround sound and rumble seats and yes, I max out the volume first thing) until I'm chilly and then go get hot again. I recommend the Bootleg Canyon flightlines and Absinthe is the best show I've been to so far. But after three glorious days, it's like a switch flips and I need to GTFO.
I do not understand going full Disney obesessed as an adult but it's fun to go as an adult without worrying about nap times or who is going to stay with the kids when you want to go on the Matterhorn again or entertaining people with zero attention span while waiting in lines. I wouldn't make it the honeymoon or go annually but H and I went at the end of a business trip for me a few years back and had a great time.
@AlohaKumu I always wonder about the husband... I mean, I don't understand the Disney theme, and think it's silly - but hey, you do you, right? However - I'm always curious if both parties are Disney fanatics, or if it's just one (assuming the bride) who gets carried away with the Disney theme (wedding, registry, etc.)
@kiki75 OMG that gif. I'm with you on gagging, @Pinky917! I can't stand mayo, but I will take allll your dark chocolate. @Sailing_Mama - I think her husband likes Disney, but not to the level that my cousin does. If someone showed her a house shaped like Mickey Mouse ears, she would totally buy it.

Me too! I love Vegas, and usually go a couple of times a year. My husband and I are going in a couple of weeks! I usually stay at Bellagio, and their buffet is SO good! We also do some gambling and always see a show- last year we saw 'O', and then Garth Brooks, and this trip we are going to see KA. I can't wait! My UO- with the exception of the one at Bellagio, I hate buffets
@AlohaKumu@Sailing_Mama I know a Disney obsessed couple and the husband's family went there like every year when he was a kid. They got engaged at Disney, had their HM there and one of their daughters who is around 4 has been there like 3 times already. The daughter's middle name is even a Disney princess's name!!

I'm torn on Vegas. It's a 6 hour drive from where I live so I've been more times than I can count. When we were younger it was gambling, getting drunk, walking the strip, etc. I had a girlfriend that worked there and could get us into VIP lounges. But walkign around in heels and a mini skirt is not my idea of fun. Or watching girls pass out with their cooters hanging out? No thanks. When we go now it's a lot different. A show, a nice dinner, a little bit of gambling and then pool time the next morning. There's a little city, Wendover, that's just west of the Utah border and that place is awesome. There are only like 3 casinos but they have great concerts out there. A lot of cover/tribute bands. We are going to see Ron White there later this year. I wear a hoodie and flip flops, play keno over dinner.. I'm so old.
@Hollyyyyy I hate buffets as well. Try the cosmo buffet! They literally have everything you could ever want in tiny versions. We saw O last year and it was amazing! We had balcony seats and could see the divers underneath giving the actors oxygen, etc. It was pretty cool! KA is amazing, I've seen it twice! Love allllllllll the Cirque shows
Me: 28 | DH: 33 EDD: March 24, 2018 - angel baby at 21 weeks
On the Vegas topic. I went once when I was 21 with some friends who were actually only 20 we had fun, mostly shopping and hanging by the pool (we went for another friend's wedding). DH and I actually went last year for our anniversary. we literally only spent $7 gambling, and not because we're big winners, but bc that is all that we spent on a slot machine. We did however go to some really nice restaurants, 2 Cirque du Soleil shows including LOVE, (I'm a Beatles fan, it was excellent), we also went to the Grand Canyon which was probably my favorite part. Neither of us has any desire to go back.
tl;dr: Vegas been there done that, not going back.
Weddings, we paid for our own so we did what we wanted. I did try to put my dress on about 2 years ago...it didn't fit but it might now, sooooo I may try it again.
I love to travel, but I say do what makes you happy, so if it's a high end hand bag or a trip to Prague do it!
Mayo is gross.

One of my friends lives in Belgium so when I visit I have all the fries with mayo, and it's sooooooo good. But American mayo is just not the same and I can't figure out what they do that makes it so tasty. I love mayo on sandwiches, but it's too bland for fries in the U.S.
The McMansion trend has faded out where I live, but has been replaced with the "Craftsman-style house" trend. Every single house is being bought, knocked over, and replaced with these massive Craftsman-style homes that I can't afford. Craftsmans (Craftsmen?) are the new McMansions.

Just typed up this long thing about the most Disney-obsessed couple I know but got too paranoid the girl would coincidentally be trying too and find it. Hahaha.
My comments- RE: Vegas- OMG, Ewwwwe. I lived there for a bit, since H is from the area. I HATE VEGAS. The buffets really aren't great and the best food is OFF the strip. That being said, it doesn't have to be bad. You don't have to spend money for the drinks I used to go sit at a machine, and let someone bring me a drink, then leave or just play with a couple pennies at the bottom of my bag. But table games are way better than machines anyway. Especially something like Poker or even better, Black jack. because that at least takes some level of skill, rather than just pulling a lever. And the architecture of the hotels are really beautiful, so it's not a wasted trip for that, and every hotel has something to do for free or cheap. Rollercoasters, arcades, live animals, water and light shows, etc. Most paid-for shows can be lame, but it depends on your attitude and what you are looking for. Some are cheesy, some are just funny, some are plain bad (Thunder Down under, I don't know... I was kicked out and blacklisted before I saw the show... ) but the Cirque shows are of course AMAZING. And I love all the street performers, but that's more Fremont street than on the strip. the food can be cheap, if you know where to go. Some hotels have cheap food, but if you travel a couple minutes, you find food trucks and great restaurants. Ya'll just need someone who knows to tell you where to go and what to do. RE: Chocolate- GIMME ALL OF DAT. Though I can typically do without white chocolate unless it's like a cookies and creme bar or something. RE: Weddings- On the opposite side, I WISH I had spent more on my wedding. Mine was kind of a disaster because I cut too any corners to save a buck. RE: Disney- Okay. I honeymooned in Disney. But I had never been before. And I actually loved it. but we also didn't pay for it, IL did. As far as movies go, yes, I am obsessed. I am obsessed with Disney movies and IDGAF what ya'll say. RE: Sandwiches - I thought it was just me! I hate the sloppy sandwich. Don't just throw mayo and turkey on bread and call it lunch. No. If I am gonna have a sandwich it's gonna take effort. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, etc. And even then, I am not a huge fan. The only exception is PB and J. I can live off of those.

@Sailing_Mama - I think her husband likes Disney, but not to the level that my cousin does. If someone showed her a house shaped like Mickey Mouse ears, she would totally buy it.

I usually stay at Bellagio, and their buffet is SO good! We also do some gambling and always see a show- last year we saw 'O', and then Garth Brooks, and this trip we are going to see KA. I can't wait!
My UO- with the exception of the one at Bellagio, I hate buffets

When we go now it's a lot different. A show, a nice dinner, a little bit of gambling and then pool time the next morning.
There's a little city, Wendover, that's just west of the Utah border and that place is awesome. There are only like 3 casinos but they have great concerts out there. A lot of cover/tribute bands. We are going to see Ron White there later this year. I wear a hoodie and flip flops, play keno over dinner.. I'm so old.
EDD: March 24, 2018 - angel baby at 21 weeks
@JJMNO1616 UGH THE FREAKING TURRETS! My god what would possess someone to build that?
tl;dr: Vegas been there done that, not going back.

The McMansion trend has faded out where I live, but has been replaced with the "Craftsman-style house" trend. Every single house is being bought, knocked over, and replaced with these massive Craftsman-style homes that I can't afford. Craftsmans (Craftsmen?) are the new McMansions.

RE: Vegas- OMG, Ewwwwe.
