Now that I reached the halfway point I feel I gotta start doing something to prep for the baby. The only thing I've done so far is ordered the stroller and car seat. I'm really dreading emptying my guest room to start the nursery...
@LivLew - we finally just emptied the rest of our spare room to make DD her "big girl room". She was so excited, and we got her new twin bed (mattress on floor until we get a frame), dresser, and rocking chair into it yesterday. I laid with her for a while (since she insisted on sleeping in there), and then I decided that the empty walls made it feel too much like a jail cell so I carried her into my room for the rest of the night. I need to cozy it up ASAP!
Can I rant about a rave? I am super lucky my sister and my best friends moms are throwing me a shower- that being said, I was just told the date. One month before I am due-to the day. A little nerve-wracking since we won't be able to get a lot until we see what we get at the shower, and that isn't much time to return/exchange/shop for anything else we might need.
We plan on getting the crib/dresser ourselves. But different family members have hinted at getting PNP/ Carseat/ potentially stroller as shower gifts. Amazing of them all, and beyond expected, so now I keep telling the baby she has to stay put until at least her due date so I make it through the shower/ have time to set it all up, etc.
TW: 1 infant loss 8/17: Our daughter was born 8/18: Our daughter kicked open heart surgery ass 2/19: We lost our son to Prader-Willi/Paradoxical Vocal Cord/ Noonans at 6wks old 4/26/2020: EDD for baby #3!!!
@smallbutmighty77 I would be really nervous about having my shower a month before the due date also. Have they already sent out the invites? Is there any possible way they could move it back 2 or 3 weeks. I would also be nervous about getting everything put away after the shower. You usually get soooo much stuff at your shower. I had to wash so many tiny baby clothes. There's so much stuff to organize in the nursery. I know you don't want to seem ungrateful but I would be stressing about that date.
@britvahok@mrsmatt1212 thank you for making me not feel crazy! I am not super worried about clothes b/c my sister is giving us a lot of hand me downs, so until LO arrives I can leave tags on and make sure sizes work before needing whatever we get. But the gear, and putting it all away and testing it out and installing the seat. Just sooo much to do that last month.
My best friend lives out of state, she was originally coming in June for a visit, so I was all for doing it when she was here, but she switched her weekend w/o telling me and since her mom is one of the hosts as well, they sort of made it the only weekend that would work.

@smallbutmighty77 If my mother would confirm, mine will also be a month from my due date. My mom is stressing right now becuase my sister is graduating from college, and she seems to think there is a lot to do for that (when in fact we are all just going to KS to see her graduate, so there really isnt anything we can do, other than make a reservation somewhere for dinner). My MIL is also going to be away the second week of June and the last week of July. I cant say that its ideal, but I just feel like I have to go with the flow. Its pretty much impossible to do it any other weekend at this point, so Im just going to have to wait.

@smallbutmighty77 that sounds like a nightmare, my OCD can't even comprehend trying to organize and settle all the stuff....and what if you go early?? Why did your friend switch weekends? Is there any way for her to work around it?
@smallbutmighty77 do you have family close by or will your best friend be staying for a few days after the shower? If so, then they can help get stuff organized.
I have been a horrible bumpie lately. I haven't even really be able to get on and lurk. I feel so guilty. And I am getting more nervous about my anatomy scan this Friday. No indications that I should be at all, just the normal 'oh lord please let my baby be healthy' type of nervousness. And I'm so happy that spring break is over. It was fun, but I like my afternoon nap with my little ones while DD1 is at school. I could clean but then I wouldn't get a nap... That's my random rant after being gone forever.

There's been 3 motorcyclists killed here within a 2 week period. All separate instances and all excessive speed and no helmets. I was the first on the scene of one of the accidents, it caused a 15 car pile up/accident. My family have motorcycles and I enjoy riding myself but I do not understand when people are intentionally reckless and defiant of the speed laws and safely rules. All I can think about is those where precious lives lost so stupidly!
@kristenk727 I've gained 18lbs in the last 20wks Midwife didn't seem concerned so I guess I'll keep eating my ice cream! Maybe I'll sprinkle some jelly beans on top in your honor.
@mrsmatt1212 The trip was amazing. Bermuda is gorgeous! It also seems that it's the number one babymoon destination right now as half of the women there were pregnant!
@littlebug2010 I am with you at this point it is what it is, just trying not to stress or buy things! My family is close by so if we need help, I can get it, but honestly they just add stress. Luckily my DH is more OCD than I am, so he is up for helping and organizing etc together. As long as LO stays put til due date or after, I will be all good.
@belmont1785 that is crazy. As a former rider, I never understood why people would take unnecessary risks like that. I am sorry you were the first one on a scene, I have been there and it shook me up for a while. Sending good safe thoughts your way.
My shower was a month before my due date last time. I remember bumpies all stressing and talking about late showers then too. For us, we ended up getting most of what we needed ourselves. Especially the big/necessary stuff. I'm glad we did because nobody really went off of our registry anyways and we ended up getting a lot more on our own after the shower. Thankful for the thought and gifts, but showers were not very helpful when it came to our actual baby preparations last time around. That is probably not everyone's experience but I've learned not to wait or count on others for things we will need.
@erindippity Mine is going to be 8 weeks before my due date. I feel like that's an appropriate timeframe? Not sure what others think about going more than 2 months before your EDD.
I agree with PP's that a month before is stressful. @smallbutmighty77 Maybe you can get the carseat yourself so you guys have time to install it? That's something you NEED to have before LO arrives. Then other things like the PnP, swings, etc.. aren't super urgent. So it might be less stressful for you to know that you have everything absolutely necessary a month before baby, if he/she comes early. Then the rest of the stuff will just be fun.
@LivLew DH and I almost booked a trip to Bermuda before deciding on California. It seems like the only tropical location without Zika concerns. Glad you had a great time!!
@LSP87 That is hilarious! I'm forwarding it to all of my library staff for a good laugh!
My random is that my hormones are raging on the very nice doctor we saw today at our A/S. The baby is perfect, but they're concerned about my high blood pressure. It's a good thing that I have my check-up with my OB tomorrow so I can talk with her if I really need to get all of this bloodwork and urine stuff done. All of my tests so far have come back great, so I'm wondering if the Maternal-Fetal Medicine people are overly cautious or not. Either way, yay for added stress... and the added blood pressure that comes with it.
@secicc12@erindippity we have two (in two different states) that are a week apart, 8 and 9 weeks before our due date. I would've loved one in late May instead just so we could've received some things early, but I guess beggars can't be choosers!
@mrsmatt1212@secicc12@erindippity My mom and sister are throwing me a shower. They asked me this weekend if memorial day weekend worked. I will be 30 and and half weeks pregnant and I thought that would be too early. But after this discussion I'm kind of glad it's that early! I didn't think about the time to set up and wash things.
I think 4-8 weeks prior to your EDD is the traditional timeframe for a baby shower. Typically the host/guests want you to have a nice big bump to show off.
We are naming this baby Rowan and so far we have been telling DD that the baby is growing in mommy's tummy. So now I can't get her to say Rowan, she just keeps saying yup, baby growin'..
I always thought 32-36 weeks was pretty average for a shower. Just think about those "I didn't know I was pregnant" people, they do ok and they don't get to plan at all.
@megaroo42 maybe they could have you take your blood pressure at home first before doing any tests. My BP is high in the office, but fine at home so they have me keep a log at home to bring to every appointment.
My shower is going to be at the end of May... I will be 28 weeks. It is earlier than I wanted it to be, but with everyone's busy summer schedules, that is the date that worked best for everyone. So far everyone I have mentioned the date to has been fine with it being early. I figure that gives me time to go through it all, set things up, do returns and figure out what we still need to get before the baby arrives.
Is anyone else having serious stress about where all the baby things are going to go? The baby's room is currently our extra storage, so we need to either get rid of or re-home the things currently in the room. We don't have a basement and our attic is pretty full too!
@Kathryn0903 I'm hoping so! The doctor-on-call just majorly freaked me out since he was nice but also talked to us like we knew nothing. Plus, it didn't help that he dropped 'pre-eclampsia' at the end. On top of all that, while he was talking to DH and I about our jobs, he was snarky about my career and made DH's job out like he was the smartest man he ever met. I wasn't a fan of the bedside manner. The worst part is that he completely wrote off the fact that my chart says I've always had higher blood pressure at the doctors, even though today's reading was still lower than the 'warning' range. Ugh.
@belmont1785 I hate it when I see people riding without helmets! So sorry you were first on scene! DH had a bad wipe-out once before I met him and now we just have a couple of motorcycles decorating our barn (which I prefer to being used!). I'm hoping this little boy won't be too interested in them!
@LivLew I am so happy to hear you enjoyed Bermuda! I just moved here to live in September. Which leads me to my weekly rant! My parents live in the US and continue to guilt me about being away. When i lived in the US they NEVER visited- it was always on me to drive to them for holidays in bumper to bumper traffic. Our house here is very small so having my mom and dad stay once the baby is born is not a reality. I keep saying I only want my mom in the first couple of weeks (and she can stay with us)- but I can see them both showing up since they're so excited. The baby will be here during the height of tourist season, so lodging elsewhere will be pricey. This is what is causing me the most stress. I typically go with the flow but my DH keeps asking if I've squared away the plan yet and tells me I should really be honest and frank with my parents (easier said than done!) thank you for letting me rant
@bestnameever DH and I talked about how Bermuda is such a lovely and safe place to raise a child. I know that the conversation with your parents is a difficult one but the sooner you have it, less stressed out you will be. My mom planned on coming from Brazil and spending 3 months with me once the baby is born. I immediately told her that DH and I did not want a house-guest. The baby will be a huge change to our lives and we want the time and privacy to bond and adapt. She was hurt but now she understands. I promised to take the baby to Brazil in November.
@bestnameever My mom and dad both took two weeks off right after baby is born, and my mom was/is convinced that they would be here "helping" for two weeks. Well my dad has other ideas, and said that they would be here for a day or two and then take the train to NYC to celebrate becoming grandparents. He hasnt told my mom yet, but it made that discussion so much easier. Sorry this isnt really helpful to your situation, but wanted to share.
I do know that we are planning to visit family once the baby is born, but that wont be until he is about a month old. this is keeping our 90 year old grandparents from traveling more than they should!

Mommy to a super cute havanesse puppy and baby boy!
My shower for my first ended up being exactly a month before I had him. It worked out fine in the end but I remember being stressed about the timing too. I had him in Feb so we were trying to avoid the holidays.
Babies really need SO little for the first few weeks and they sleep A LOT so I found it easy to keep nesting.
Back from a 9 day vacay from SoCal. We visited San Diego where my husband is from, for his bday which was also his mom's retirement day.
now my rant - I called it out on the in-laws post earlier, but yes she did talk about money and politics like I knew she would. She randomly just asks us while on the couch why we didn't vote for the sitting President. I'm like really you're asking this right now?
oh and she also said I work out too much! Out of the 9 days vacay there I went to Pure Barre 4 times and she called me out on working out too much. Wow.
As as much as I miss Southern California and San Diego, plus the family, I'm glad I'm home! Back to work, back to our routine, and no talks about politics and money with my folks here.
@LivLew I also told my mom not to come down from GA. I love her, but after my first baby she was so controlling from afar. I couldn't deal with living with it and transitioning to 2. We just don't have that relationship. It's hard enough when on her yearly visit. She can't drive and is super nervous in public. It's not even like I could send her out for the groceries and such. So I said just wait until babies here. I've figured out how to do it with two and then come.
Having a newborn is going to take a lot of getting used to! I have a feeling patience will be at an all time low, so I do not want my parents there to complicate things! I will be especially frustrated if they completely ignore my wishes in the first couple of weeks. Such a delicate balance!
My baby shower will be at the end of May- since that is the last time I will fly to the US before baby! My sister is due in July so we are having a joint shower. She already told me she doesn't want photos taken since I'll be looking cuter than her.
Gotta love family!!! as much as I gripe- I love them and lucky for me, my inlaws are so easy to get along with and drama free!
