Diaper Bags

Re: Diaper Bags

  • I started with the Skip Hop Duo Signature, but after a couple of months I went down to an Eddie Bauer sling backpack. I nursed, so all I needed to carry around was one spare pair of clothes for her, a few diapers, wipes, and that was about all. I kept the bigger Skip Hop in the car with extra supplies because lugging everything around everywhere got old. I used an infant carrier most of the time as opposed to a stroller so having a small sling backpack made us very portable.  :)

  • I totally don't remember the name of my bag or print. But I have a Vera Bradley that I used for DD and will use for this LO. I looked on their website and they don't sell them anymore. I love it because it comes with a change pad and has lots of pockets so I can keep everything organized. It's a messenger style bag and it's not too big or too small :) my only wish is that it closed with a zipper.

  • Agreed that backpack style will be easier, especially with more than one kid.

I bought a North Face backpack for our Disney trip in December thinking it would be my new diaper bag, but now I'm realizing it doesn't have stroller straps.  I used my Skip Hop stroller strap ALL THE TIME.  Is there away to rig a regular bag with stroller or should I just get a backpack diaper bag with stroller straps?

SO & I absolutely love this diaper back pack which we put on our target registry, so we hope to see it at the shower!! I love purses and have a few big ones, which I thought I'd use if I'm carrying light (meaning only out for 2-3 hours). The backpack will deff make it easier to carry more necessities for a longer period of time!

Not sure we need the double with with only one baby on the way and being a FTM. I keep going back and forth...I thought this would be a good one for both H and I and not have to buy a separate one.

This is the one we have now. Love it.  Wanted to switch it up and will get the Honest Co. one this time and keep the other in the car as backup.

I just did a quick google search. They are straps that loop around the stroller and evenly distribute the weight of the bag. It's great because then you can use the basket under the stroller for other things!
  • Thanks @bacorrea!  I guess I could have googled it myself!

Oh it's fine, I just wanted to be clear that those weren't a picture of mine specifically.

@emilyalso good point! I didn't even think to check!

A quick word about stroller straps - We have the City Mini GT (and LOVE IT!!!), but it specifically says NOT to hang anything from the handle bar. I'm not sure how many strollers have similar warnings, but it's probably good to double check so you don't flip your LO's!  :o
I think most strollers have that warning as a CYA kind of thing.

I almost flipped both my travel system stroller and my umbrella stroller several times due to the combined weight of the diaper bag and additional shopping bags. That was totally my fault and didn't necessarily keep me from doing it.

We have the double version that says this too, I ignore it lol.

  • I think the City Mini GT has a particularly bad weight distribution in this way. It's still my #1 choice and will be buying it if it's not purchased from our registry, but it seems worse than other strollers I have used. It tips very easily. I have only used it with a <1 year old so hopefully the added weight of the child helps offset that as they get older?
  • I can't remember if we've discussed this somewhere else or not. If so, feel free to direct me that way. If not, could we discuss what goes IN the diaper bag? What are your must-haves for a newborn's diaper bag?

@hp_momma Diaper bag supplies for everyday use.
  • @hp_momma Diaper bag for everyday use.
Diapers, wipes, pacifier, burp cloth, 1 or 2 changes of clothes for them, butt cream, plastic bags for poopy diapers (I love the arm & hammer ones). I also keep a tiny bottle of baby wash and baby lotion because you never know when they'll have a diaper blowout.

  • @starphish18 I've also heard some bigger zip locks for poopy clothes
  • Everyone gave good recommendations. Exactly what I kept in mine. Also good to have extra gripe water or gas drops in your bag if your using those. Gripe water didn't work for my son but the gas drops worked miracles, didn't leave home without it.
  • In addition to all the stuff above, I always kept a few disposable changing pads (Munchkin makes them, I think?). They're super handy for changing blowouts on the go. You throw them on top of your changing pad, and when you're done you can wrap the dirty wipes and diaper inside and toss the whole bundle in the trash. I also kept a pack of Wet Ones or Lysol wipes to clean suspect-looking changing tables (or to clean up after ourselves).
  • I also kept one bottle of vitamin D drops in there since they're small bottles and it's easy to forget at home. So I always had a spare.
  • I definitely pared down my what I had as DD got older. I plan on switching to a backpack for #2, and creating a car bag for extras. I just need 1-2 diapers in the bag if I have more in the car, that kind of idea.

For DD as a newborn, I had:
    Diapers
    Wipes
    Desitin
    A&D ointment
    Change of clothes
    Extra hat
    Nursing cover
    Gas drops
    Nail clippers and file
    Tiny first aid kit
    Toys
    Water and snacks for me
    My wallet and other items

  • Ok this is the first I'm hearing of gas drops. How often do you use them? Can you use them right away? What are the best brands of drops?
  • @SWE2 - We didn't use gas drops, but we had a bottle of Colic Calm on hand. My best friend SWEARS by it and gave it to her baby with every bottle. I hated to give it to DS if I didn't think he needed it, so I mostly used it at night if he was melting down. There were times where he had been SCREAMING for half an hour+ and would be silent within minutes of taking it.

@mamatowildones @mrsrep123 (I think someone else too?): I looked for the Honest bag you mentioned... is it the "everything tote" that you have? Is it big enough for toddler plus newborn stuff?

Re the Kipling bag: Amazon shows a 15.5 inch option and a "one size" option... which is better?

  • I meant to post in here last weekend.  I got a Kate Spade black vinyl diaper bag at the outlet last weekend.  I think I'm going to love it.  And I think it could double as a work/computer bag after it's kid use depending how it holds up.  If you have an outlet near you, check it out.  It was right around $100.

I don't remember exactly how often but I just went by the box. I believe that I did use them right away, or after a week or two.. once I figured out what the problem was. I also don't remember what brand I used ( I know not very helpful) but I got something that was dye free

I'm the someone else with the Honest bag. Yes, it's the Everything tote and we absolutely love it! We found ours in pink faux leather at Nordstrom (they carry the entire Honest line, including all the scents so you can sample before buying there or elsewhere for cheaper. Plenty big for toddler plus newborn, which is our situation too. Highly recommend!

  • @SKZW According to the addl product info it looks like the measurements for both end up being very similar. But my recommendation is for any of the ones with the two pockets on the front. That's what I have and ends up being very handy to separate contents. I noticed they have a few more color listings now just by searching Kipling baby bag. I use one side for baby toiletries and the other as a momma pouch with meds and spare key and tampons eventually!

@notaplaya-justcrushalot that's where I got mine.  I have the stevie bag and love it.  It's been great the past 2 years.  The outlet will prob have a great easter and memorial day sale too!

@Louise_Belcher , @emilyalso , I am SO excited to have a backpack diaper bag. I've got my hands full these days chasing one kid around...I think the backpack will be a game changer with two, especially when out and about on vacation, on day trips, etc.
I like the idea of using a backpack too. My husband thinks it'll be much more comfortable during outings than a regular bag would be.
