Car seat and diaper bag questions

FTM here. Absolutely freaking out, but "someone" (pretty sure it's my step-mom) purchased some of the bigger ticket items off my slim registry (I've really mostly just been "window shopping" with it). We're getting this gorgeous stroller: Baby Jogger City Mini Single Stroller, Evergreen/Gray - which leads me to my next questions...

So can we talk car seats and diaper bags? Do you have/have heard about an amazing car seat? How many times are we going to have to change seats? (eg, there are infant seats... toddler seats... all the seats)

And diaper bags... I am hoping to breastfeed, and we will be cloth diapering.. so how big does a diaper bag need to be? Do you like lots of pockets, or prefer a wide open interior?

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Car seat and diaper bag questions

  • Depends on what you want to make your life easier. For me I love when I can click an infant seat into the stroller - super quick and easy. That way if baby falls asleep in their seat you don't have to wake to move them. I always found myself coming home with baby sleeping in the infant seat - I would just carry the seat into the house and put it down and let them sleep. You could forgo the infant and do a convertible with an infant insert but you'll have to pull out your tiny baby every time you get in or out of your car. You will eventually need a convertible seat to put rear facing till the baby outgrows that - my daughter is still in a convertible and she is almost 3.5 yrs old.

As far as bags, I breastfed my kids till they were each over a year old - I still had a packed bag!! Get one that has comfortable straps, whether messenger or backpack style. I always packed: 2-3 burp clothes, 2 change of clothes, 4+ diapers, diaper rash cream, extra pacifier, water bottle and snack for me, changing pad, blanket unless it was on the car seat. As you can imagine, that fills a bag pretty quickly. What you put in there will also change as baby gets older and then when their 6 months + snacks come into play and boy oh boy you will need the space lol.
  • Loading the player...
  • Diaper bag- I have the jujubee bff and love it. The inside is large enough for 8 diapers, toys, clothes, cream, sunscreen, water bottle, etc... I CD and ebf until just last month when my milk started to dry up. This diaper bag has had enough pockets and space for everything we could ever need.

I am a little worried about it holding enough for two under two but I am holding out and not buying another one until I know we need it.
  • In terms of diaper bags, I have a Tuk Tuk by Lug (https://www.luglife.com/products/tuk-tuk-carry-all-bag?variant=1270617252). I loooove it. Big enough to fit everything but not so gigantic that it's too heavy to take everywhere. It also looped over our stroller nicely so I could just hang it there. I like having some smaller pockets for the things I knew I would need (diapers, wipes, cream, a bottle) but lots of open space for extra clothes, burp cloths, toys, etc. This one also has a compartment for wet stuff. I didn't cloth diaper, but I imagine this would work for that. I put dirty clothes in it so the clean stuff would stay clean.

I also kept one of these in the stroller: https://m.indigo.ca/product/gifts/product/879674012189?mkwid=sXRWKvZbD_dm&pcrid=44154571502&pkw=&pmt=&s_campaign=goo-Shopping_Baby&gclid=CjwKEAjwwcjGBRDj-P7TwcinyBkSJADymblTtGU7ZVM1jBPMKsAp97Sep9eidcVz8VOCfFVCxNCZqxoCyorw_wcB

It was handy when we were just out for a walk or something and didn't want to take the entire diaper bag.

I like using the infant seat because you can snap them in and out easily. Plus I will be using it in the winter so it will be nice to have baby in the seat ready to go before we leave the house. We like the chicco. You should be able to get an adapter to make the infant seat snap into your stroller if they don't come as a set.

After the bucket seats we got dd2 a graco 4ever. It should last her until she is out of carseats but it is super bulky compared to my other daughters harness booster. But the trade off is less car seats to buy.

For bags, I'm a fan of pockets. That way I put certain things in certain pockets and know where they are. The middle of my bag tends to be a bottomless pit full of receipts and fruit snacks wrappers.

Edit, I hate typing on mobile

  • We had an infant seat, and then a convertible seat (and now a booster for our oldest). For our youngest, We had a snugride click connect 40 because I also like being able to carry the baby sleeping in its carseat. Then we bought an evenflo symphony LX.

As a FTM I preferred a bag with lots of pockets, and that diaper bag survived my first but was demolished by my second. It was a vera bradley diaper bag and I loved it. TBH, I threw everything in my purse. I have a large Vera Bradley purse with pockets on the inside. It has snacks, toys, book, wipes, diapers, wallet, pens, chapstick etc. I wont be purchasing another diaper bag. If you're going to cloth diaper be sure to grab a wet bag for your diaper bag.

  • I am another on the Britax bandwagon. We had the B-Agile/B-Safe combo and I loved it! Being able to snap her right into the stroller without taking her out of the car seat was awesome. And taking the car seat out of the car if she was sleeping was priceless. We transitioned from the B-Safe to the Boulevard around 1 year, but kept her rear facing til after 2. Now she's 3.5 and still hs room to grow.

I've already purchased two more B-Safe car seats for the twins because Amazon had an awesome sale.

As as far as diaper bags go, I think that's something you are just going to have to try out and see what works best for your needs. I was pretty laid back with my diaper bags, but I have a friend that tried about 5 before she found one that worked for her needs.

  • I agree with @wyomama0427. Don't spend tons of money on diaper bags. We got a fairly nice one from Babies R Us with DD and used it a ton, but then it started to rip. Just got another one from WalMart and its holding up better so far.

  • I love my backpack, I've got lots of pockets and I can throw it in the washing machine. Which I've done a few times already. I've never had to carry anything for formula so maybe a hiking/camping backpack with an insulated section for food or something. If such a creature exists
  • We had a backpack style diaper bag with lots of pockets on the inside and love it.  However, with 2 now and cloth diapering and formula feeding we decided to just use an old school backpack.

I also recommend getting an infant car seat for when they are small, and then transitioning to a convertible. It will make your life so much easier. I have a couple of diaper bags that are meh, but I plan to get a backpack this time. I think it will just make it easier to carry around and maybe more compact.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a convertible car seat that is small front to back while rear-facing? Our DD is in a Britax Marathon and while I like it, it is sooo long and the only way it fits rear-facing in my car is in the middle with it sticking between the two front seats. Once we have 2 car seats in the back, I am not sure we will be able to fit one in the middle next to the Marathon (edited to say we will front face DD when this one's born). Any suggestions for something that will fit better without sticking out a mile would be much appreciated.

  • For the infant car seat, definitely go to a store that has a huge selection and try them each out.  Most stores will let you try them out in your car too, so you know if they even fit (some are quite large).  I battled that infant "bucket" seat with DS.  I had a Graco Snugride something - was heavy, awkward, inconvenient almost everywhere I went.  It killed my wrists.  I hated it so much that I switched to a rear-facing convertible seat by the time he turned 6 months, and he was by no means a big or heavy baby.  Before I switched, I wrapped him everywhere I went to avoid using that Graco.  That was my experience, but I know some people use that thing past baby's first birthday.

This time around, I bought a Maxi Cosi infant seat.  It's super, super light weight and the handle makes more sense to me.  The downside is that it's a bit bigger (longer) than the Graco Snugride, but my car is bigger this time.  I focused on the lightness of it, hoping I wouldn't hate it so much.  When they're tiny, the "bucket" seat is very convenient, which is why I even bought one this time.

The next seat up, as I mentioned, was the convertible - a Britax Marathon.  My son was in it rear-facing until just before his 3rd birthday, when I flipped it to forward-facing.  We used the convertible until just a couple months ago, when I bought the Britax Frontier.  That is the last car seat he'll ever have.

For diaper bags, I also wasn't a fan.  I used a large purse/tote instead, and never took with me more than I might need.  I also cloth diapered, which when it comes to diaper bags, has no real relevance.  You still need to have 2-3 diapers on hand (depending on where you go), a wet bag for dirty dipes, and some wipes.  I never carried around toys, extra clothes (past a few weeks old), tons of creams/ointments, etc. I breastfed and pumped until he was a year old, so I had a little bottle cooler/carrier that fit perfectly in my bag when needed.  He was with a nanny until 18 months, so no need for a special diaper bag at daycare.  That said, some daycares have diaper bag requirements that would be worth looking into before spending money on anything.
  • This may be a UO here but I don't understand the hype over big expensive crazy diaper bags.. I bought a $15 backpack from Walmart and honestly I love it. I'm sure some of the other diaper bags have features that might be useful but I can't justify spending $325 for a Marc Jacobs bag that is going to hold diapers and ass wipes... lol. Just my thoughts.
My initial thought was a canvas messenger bag (my H is OBSESSED with messenger bags, he carries more crap than I do). But then I wondered if I would would need lots of pockets. With all the amazing feedback so far, I think maybe I'l register for something inexpensive, and if I find I hate it later, I won't feel bad if we try out something else.

I am loving the car seat info. There are so many brands and things to consider I find myself getting overwhelmed.

@hatrats  I have a smaller car and 2 step kiddos, so was concerned about car seat size, too.  FTM, so can't speak for daily use, yet...but I found these websites with info.  Hopefully, there is an option here for you to try in your car.

I'm going with the chicco 30 infant seat (because I'm in love with the TRE jogger that is a frame to hold the car seat until jogging can commence) and will get a convertible seat later on.

As for diaper bags, I got the 31 zip top organizing tote for it's outter pockets, roomy interior, and wipe clean fabric.  Added on a couple zipper pouches and thermal zipper pouch for bottles.  Registered for a planted wise dry bag.  It does seem like a very personal thing...since hubby will do the day care transport due to my early commute, I couldn't just go with my purse.

  • I just purchased a maxi cosi mico AP. They are currently on sale at albeebaby.com. We will purchase an extra base for DH's car. We have a Peg Prego 30/30 that we used for DH but it was so heavy. For a convertible seat I ended up with a chicco nextfit that I love and DH has a Graco mysize 65 that was purchased because it is slightly smaller and fit better in DH's car. The Graco is ok but the nextfit was easier to install and it is easier to get DS in and out of.

  • I just got the GB Alara travel system it came in the mail today. It has an infant car seat and was a really great price. I am also getting a Graco slim fit all in one convertible car seat to transition to. I'm a FTM so I'm not super picky about brands as I don't know much about them.  I have just been looking around online, trying to stay within our budget, and reading reviews to get a good ideas.
  • When it comes to diaper bags, I completely agree with @wyomama0427! I didn't spend a bunch of money on a diaper bag. I found a cute one at target for about $20 and used it for awhile. It carried what I needed it to and sometimes, things spilled and it got dirty. Luckily I didn't care because it wasn't super expensive! I ended up just switching to one of my larger purses after about a year.

We used an infant car seat that attached to a stroller than at about 10 months with DS switched to the Britax Marathon also which he still has and he is 4 1/2.  We will be getting a booster seat soon though.

As far as diaper bags I went for the black Coach with the baby blue lining inside.  Just an FYI...  I HATE diaper bags.  This time around I am throwing a few things in my purse and out the door we go. I never used half the shit I crammed in that thing. LOL!

We loved the chicco keyfit infant seat. Loved it and will use one for this baby as well. Then we got a recaro convertible seat, also love. As for diaper bags, I got a cheap target orla kiely bag. Works great.

eta: our convertible seat is the recaro performance racer. We love it, but it is a big seat. It fits our large SUV but might not fit smaller vehicles.

  • I second the chicco keyfit30. I used it til ds was 8m (he was tall) and since have been using a Graco convertible seat. Check to see what car seat adapters that brand has for your stroller first though.. @wyomama0427 i love diaper backpacks it seriously makes like much easier than a bulky bag constantly falling down your arms when your carrying a baby!

  • For our car seat we got the graco snug fit. DS was huge so he was only in it for 3 maybe 4 momths. I'll just use the same seat with LO.

As far as diaper bags go I just use the Walmart book bag that has a bunch of zippers on it. And we just put my sons stuff in his Mickey Mouse book bag that he can carry on his back.
  • The Baby Jogger strollers are GORGEOUS, DH and I tested them out at Babies R Us last weekend and they were super easy to use, I'm mondo jealous  They have a nice list on their website of what infant car seats are compatible with the stroller that you buy, which can help you narrow down your car seat choices.

From my super scientific analysis of infant car seats (I manhandle every single one that I see in stores to see how idiot-proof they are) I thought the Peg Perego was really easy to attach/detach from its base. It's a bit on the pricey side, but it's also one of the few seats with an anti-rebound bar, so if you decide that's an important feature then it might sway your choice.

Re: diaper bags, we're looking into a backpack-style one, which isn't the most convenient for strollers but will be a godsend when we're babywearing. If you get a messenger bag-style, I would recommend putting something heavy in the bag and walking it around the store, to see if it digs into your shoulder weird or hits your hips at an odd angle or something. My stepmom had to return 2 different bags because she kept going for "looks" over "usability".

  • I have a Graco snugride infant carrier, and I loved that thing, especially when DS was younger.  Everyone has pretty much covered how awesome they are for sleeping babies, so I want to throw a PSA out there for moms with small cars.

We got a frame stroller for the carrier (also Graco), rather than the carrier/ big stroller set.  We lived in 3rd floor rowhome when DS was born, and I couldn't haul a heavy stroller up the stairs.  Also, my car is small (00 Jetta), and the frame stroller takes up way less space than the full size stroller does in the trunk.  We did eventually buy a bigger stroller for DS, but we were able to get it at a consignment shop for $40, and it was still cheaper than if we had gotten the carrier/ stroller combo.  This is something you want to consider while looking at strollers.

Also, convertible car seats are BIG.  Even when the reviews say they're small, once you start moving the head rest further up for the baby, they take up a lot of space.  Keep this in mind if you have a small car, and will have the convertible seat behind the passenger side, and you travel as a family a lot together.  I'm sitting at a 90 degree angle in my car right now, and it gets uncomfortable, fast.  DS will thankfully be going forward facing later this year!

Try to not get too overwhelmed. There are way too many choices, just find the price range you are comfortable in and then start narrowing down what you want/need.

Lots of good tips here. I'll try to keep mine short from a mama going on her third baby...

Keep in mind usability if you have more children. I had awesome car seats that became completely useless when baby number two came along because either only one could rear face and we wanted both to rear face or they were too wide to install in my car properly, etc. Car Seats For The Littles is a fantastic group on FB to use to get technician's feedback on your specific car and a the seat or two you've narrowed down to.

We now have narrow, multimode/convertible seats that are fantastic. You CAN purchase one seat to last from day one to 6-7 years old. We did that for kid #2 and love it.

Same thing for strollers. Will that pricey awesome stroller store well in car when your family packs up to camp or will it even be usable if you have two kids? Or will you have to replace it?

I had many purchase regrets after kid number one because I just never thought about how kid #2 or 3 or 4, etc. would factor in.

Edit it to add missing words.

  •  Second the snap-in bucket seat for all the above reasons.

I bought a messenger style diaper bag from target with my first and hated it. I have back problems and holding it on one side killed me (and it wasn't very heavy). I bought a used PPB backpack style bag the second time around and it has held up great. We still use it and it's so easy to pack and carry. I would never, ever buy one new, but if you can find a used on for a reasonable price I would recommend it.

  • I appreciate all the feedback, thank you all so much :) One of our vehicles is a Honda FIT (which are surprisingly roomy inside for such a small exterior), so I should measure how much space there is between the back seat and where the seats are normally positioned.

Maybe a dumb/easily Googled question: how long (eg until how old) do you front carry baby when you baby wear? A backpack seems like a good idea, but when baby transitions to being worn on my back, I'll have to figure something else out (when I'm out alone)
  • I'm with @mightymcqueen and I second the PegPerego car seat! It's one of the only seats with the impact foam (in football helmets) completely around baby instead of just the head, and yes the impact bar! It just seems do much safer than others.

I still wore my daughter (using a Tula) on my front up until I got pregnant and she's 3.5 yrs old- she does only weigh 30lbs.  I had an ergo and it hurt my shoulders/back so we got the Tula and both my hubby and I would wear her on front all the time. We usually only wear her when we are doing tons of walking or traveling and even then it's very sparingly. We took our kids to Italy when our daughter was 18 months old and didn't bring a stroller for her - we Tula'd her the entire time. We only back carry when we are both around - it's a bit tricky but I'm sure it can be done, just never really found the need to perfect it alone lol.

    Edit: mobile bumping is hard
  • I had a travel system which came with an infant seat and large stroller. We bought a convertible seat and we got the one that grows with the child.

  • @jena333 I front carried until 18lbs then bought a Deuter 2 kid carrier. We do a lot of hiking. The Deuter is one of those structured kid carrier and gear holder combos so I really only recommend specifically for hiking.
  • Oh sh*t @stauters11 I may have just reported you. I so didn't mean to do that. My phone was lagging and I was impatiently clicking. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me.

I still front carry my 15 month old--he's 24 lbs. He likes to see what's going on. I have a lillebaby carrier and love it because of how it distributes the weight (more on the hips than the back) and DH can use it too. I'm 5'8" and he's 6'3". I should probably start back carrying, but when DH isn't around it's hard to do safely getting DS2 on my back.
  • I feel like a car seat, stroller and a baby bag are some of the few things you definitely want to spend the money on. Other things you can spend less. I loved our Britax b safe and plan on using it again, plus it clips into the baby jogger brand. They're like middle of the road as far as cost. For diaper bag get a backpack ESP when they're mobile you'll be grateful. I have a jujube bff I believe. It's the smaller backpack one and love it. It's not too big but I think it'll work for two kids easily.
  • So we actually have a canvas messenger diaper bag. It's black and perfect because if DH has it, he's happy to tote it around instead of obliged. It's nice if whatever you choose can fit in the basket beneath your stroller. Less to carry. Backpack is definitely the way to go when baby wearing on front. DS is only 8.5 months so I have no advice on back carry. We don't cloth diaper so I'm of no help there but I would imagine you'll want a couple of wet bags (washable bags lined with plastic.) You could also get a diaper bag divider and use a regular bag.

+1 for an infant bucket seat that has adapters to fit your stroller. Or a frame stroller if you are in and out of your car a lot. You can get an extra base if you have 2 cars. We chose a version of the Cybex Aton Q. It is very pricy but we live in the city and I take Uber almost daily. A European latch system installs very safely without the base. If I didn't switch cars so frequently I would have skipped the expense but it is a cool seat with a load leg base, telescoping side impact protection bars and best for me was a no re-thread harness (meaning no need to move straps when adjusting height as baby grows.) I thought I would write this all out in case there are other city dwellers.
  • @jena333 I believe back carries aren't recommended until about 6 months or they have really good head control. And I was taught to always have them face you in a front carry to avoid over stimulation and so they can look to mom/dad to learn from our reactions/interactions.

I mostly front carried DS in our lilliebaby but have a much harder time with the lilliebaby carry on so now I mostly back carry.
