The Things People Say

Re: The Things People Say

  • @stephy_p my grandma is the same way! Every single time I see her the first thing she does is comment on my weight. Right before our wedding DH and I went to visit and she said to me.... "Well... you look good... but don't gain any more weight. You want to be a beautiful bride don't you?"
Um... huh? And then I gained 76 pounds while pregnant with DS and she has made a point to tell me every time she sees me that I gained too much weight and I didn't lose enough and that I really "filled out" and I should just sell all my clothes because I'll never fit back into them.
    Grandmas can be brutal!

  • Lol.... grandmas truly have a way with words, huh??

I remember with DD everyone (strangers, friends, family) telling me that I just HAD to be having a boy because I was carrying her so low.
  • I get a lot of comments on my weight but typically on my lack of belly. (It's not for lack of eating, I assure you.) I'm 15 weeks and sure I have a little bit of bloat but no actual baby bump yet.

People keep telling me I'm going to have a tiny baby if I don't start "feeding" it.

I just gently remind them that they said the the same thing with baby #1 and she was 8lbs!
  • @Msashley2010 it's like people have no idea how pregnancy works lol. When I was in college I was on the skinny end of the weight jokes too, and it felt just as awful! People would say things like "Hey subway just called and they've got five sandwiches you need to go eat." I don't get why a persons weight is such a big thing to people! I think your HDBD pics look great!
  • My DH's grandma was brutal about his weight when he was growing up. He was/is a beanpole. Once I accidentally called him skinny and he was so hurt and offended. I now remember to use the words "lanky" and "lean" to describe him.
I just don't understand why people have to comment on weight at all. Unless you have a friend that's trying to lose weight, then you can say encouraging things about it. But why the negativity on both sides of the spectrum?

Oh god, the go eat a burger or sandwich comments totally kill me.  :/
  • And then you have NO idea who is battling what. My best friend is bulimic (but doing SO well, I'm super proud of her). She's pretty upfront about it, but people have said some ridiculous things to her about being so small.

And then there's me, who gets "wow you must be due any day now" comments when I'm not pregnant.

There's just no reason to comment on someone's weight unless they specifically ask you to.

Yes! I couldn't hang out with any of my friends or even just be at work without everyone telling me to eat something. People don't understand that weight jokes hurt just as much when it's about being skinny too. Its ridiculous.
