Plus size Mamas

Re: Plus size Mamas

  • I'm 35lbs overweight, 5'8", size 16, 30BMI. 2 years TTC & 3 losses were very VERY emotional for me. It's like, pregnant... check. NOW I'm in the mindset to be healthier. I just couldn't tackle it the other way around, no matter how hard I tried. I was too depressed about not being pregnant.

I'm just maintaining my prepregnancy 250 calorie deficit per Fitbit & MyFitnessPal. Will revisit at the 5 month mark or if the OB recommends otherwise. Only since getting my bfp have I been able to stick with the deficit easily though. Down 3lbs so far.

  • Plus size mama checking in. I gained about 60lbs with my first and probably lost maybe 20-30lbs. I was tracking calories before getting KU. I would still like to try and lose weight while pregnant...my first appointment isn't until February 10 so I plan to talk to my OB about this.  I do not want to gain that much this time around!

  • I agree with the weekly checkin.

And since we don't have a check in yet, I have a question I will pose here. How overweight do you have to be to move to high risk?

  • @DPandMB I would guess at the usual BMI cutoff of 30 = clinically obese. But, you would just notice it on your paperwork (clinicians covering their rears) and not necessarily in how they treat you. I've already noticed the code word "habitus" on my paperwork from my pelvic exam. Was I treated any different from when I had a healthier BMI... nope.
  • @DPandMB  from what I understood off my OBs paperwork, it isn't so much a weight cut off as it as weight in combination with another risk factor (blood pressure, blood sugar, medical history).

  • Hi all. I just posted a thread this morning asking if any one was having a plus size pregnancy. Then I searched and found this in my own birth month club. Thank goodness!

I'm 10w+2 today and I'm a FTM. My BMI is up there at 45, so I'm high-risk due to that and other things (age). I had a hard time getting pregnant, one fertility clinic wouldn't even help me. But last summer I found a very kind RE that helped me conceive on our first round of IUI. I've lost some weight just being pregnant, M/S. My OB doesn't want me to gain more than 15-20lbs. I'm very optimistic that I can do that, but then, I've never been pregnant, so we'll see.

My first question: do any of you have and use a fetal doppler. Any of you have issue finding baby's hb? I'm hoping it's just because I carry a lot of my weight in my stomach that I can't hear the hb...but curious about your experiences.

Anyway, I'm so happy to have found this thread. I hope we can all support each other!

  • @hopetobeashraderfam I don't have a home doppler, but from what I've heard it's hard to get a hb at home until at least 10 weeks but many women don't find it for a few weeks after that even regardless of weight. I really wouldn't worry too much about it this early on. But if you are still concerned, call you OB and get their opinion.

I tried to start a weekly check in for plus size mamas but everyone seemed to be struggling through m/s and just happy to be eating anything at all lol. So maybe we can start that back up in a couple weeks when as a group we are generally feeling better and can share tips on what's helping to keep us healthy.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I'm overweight and I'm 12 weeks pregnant with twins! I'm scared about how much I will gain. I started at 211 (5'7) and have gained about 5 pounds now. I lost around 30 pounds before getting pregnant and it took me about 3 years. I'm so scared it'll take so long to get off again. I'm trying not to worry about it though and my husband keeps reminding me that I'm not getting fat I'm getting pregnant....so he's been a great support.

My doctor said I have to do the glucola test early (at 12 weeks)  "because of my weight"...that was hard to hear.

I really need to get back to working out even if it's just walking because I've been so busy and haven't found the time.
  • @h0connell join us in the Plus Size weekly check in on Wednesdays. There's quite a few of us who share similar concerns. It's easy to be hard on yourself and be nervous, but keep in mind that your body is doing the most beautiful thing: growing TWO beautiful babies. Is the 12 week glucose test just a blood test? Or is that one of the ones that take a few hours? I had to take a blood glucose test at 12 weeks with all the other normal bloodwork. Hopefully that's all you have to do at this point too with good results!

  • @h0connell I took the glucose test early because of my weight, and while it sucks it's not the worst thing ever. It's like drinking a stale, super-sweet orange soda. Just remember that a lot of people get false positives on the 1-hr glucose test, so if you "fail" that test you still have a good chance of not being diabetic.

Congrats on having twins, and good luck!!

  • @SuzieMay827 thank you so much for the kind words...I'll definitely have to join that discussion. It's the one where you drink the liquid. Doesn't sound fun.

    Thank you @mightymcqueen!
