Re: Bringing Home baby
Right now the plan is for DH to take a week off, but his boss told him that they would be flexible and if he needed more we could arrange something at the time.
With DD he took a full week off and it was too many people taking care of baby. I felt 100% from the moment my epidural wore off and both of our moms live within 15 minutes of our house. We all got a little stir crazy.
@bacorrea @WombThereItIs Did you see that in the new defense act for 2017 that was signed that
"Under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense, a member of the armed forces described in subsection (i)(2) who is the secondary caregiver in the case of the birth of a child or the adoption of a child is allowed up to 21 days of leave to be used in connection with such birth or adoption."
Sooo it did officially pass, but the likelyhood of it being implemented in new regulations from Sec. of Defense before our May due dates? Probably slim to none right?

Hmmm I haven't heard about that at all. DH will
be taking "normal" leave though (as long as he is approved) because he is in TX and we are in VA until I get cleared 6 weeks after birth. We will know more next week when he checks into his new BN.

FTM question: How long are you not allowed to drive with a C-section? Do people who deliver vaginally have driving restrictions as well?
docs will say not to drive even after a vaginal delivery too though.

This time we are really hoping for 2 weeks off, but he works for a small company and won't get any actual leave. Unfortunately it's during a really busy time, but they'll survive. Luckily we also have both sets of parents in town, and I plan to send the toddler to respective grandparents houses at least 2 days a week or for partial days to help keep him in a routine.
Someone with more letters after their name can fact check me but I recall it has something to do with increased risk of uterine rupture in the case of an accident.

I wasn't told about any driving restrictions after either of my vaginal deliveries, but don't forget you really aren't driving by yourself because your not supposed to be lifting anything heavier than your infant... so no lifting that car seat in and out of the car!

I wasn't given any driving restrictions, once discharged from hospital they legally cannot stop you (different country different laws though) once you leave hospital you must be capable of returning to "normal duties" which includes driving, otherwise the hospital is liable if you get in an accident.
I still cannot imagine driving less than a week after giving birth vaginally though, but in saying that all my cars are manual with heavy clutches, so that's where that comes from. If I had an automatic I would probably drive home from hospital.

Purely out of curiosity, how long is a hospital stay after birth there? You're in Australia, right?

Im not sure what I will do this time, I think I'll still want at least 2 nights I don't feel comfortable with "have baby, go home" we also have home visits 3 times in the first 2 weeks.
sometimes I think it's overkill but I'd rather too much care than not enough

Wow, lots of good advice, ladies.
I really enjoy learning how different all of your experiences were. I've thought more of how long I'd like my fiancé to stay at home with me. I was really thinking a week was more than enough, but now I'm not so sure.
As of right now, we both agreed a week would be fine. Luckily, his boss told us that he will allow SO to let him know when he'd need it (post baby or a week after baby is born).
After reading all of your posts, I want to ask him to request FMLA. We can go a month without pay, seeing as we will be with my mom at her house. I'd really like him to bond with our first child. I think that would be really special. And why not take advantage of all the help we'll get?
Hmm, now I have more to keep me up at night lol

ETA: I haven't had a chance to really talk with H about his time off again. I'm really leaning towards getting him to be okay with a week off whether he uses his sick or vacation time. I think he even qualifies for FMLA, but it is unpaid and we can't afford that. I'm going to have him look into it because they can't deny him. He had a friend/coworker who used to work there want time off for when his baby was born and they literally only let him take the day, maybe day after too, the baby was born. Ridiculous! I really want him to fight, so I'm hoping he will! It's just been a rough week and I haven't been up for adding more emotional stuff, like I'm not already thinking about it...anyway, just wanted to provide the update since I'm the OP and truly appreciated hearing everyone's experiences and what their plans are this time! Thank you!!

This time he was planning on taking 2 weeks but they had some changes and might only take a week in may, but also take a week in June, and a week in July. I also want to take a small local beach resort vacation in July but we will play that one by ear.
