The wait to first obgyn visit

Re: The wait to first obgyn visit

  • @jessafishy I figured it was Western Canada. That sounds about right; health care there is a flustercuck. I'm pretty sure there's only one RE in all of Winnipeg - which has 750K people. I'm from Manitoba and I thought if you were lucky enough you might be able to push for an earlier one depending on your doctor but good luck finding a doctor, never mind a specialist. I'm super relieved not to be there anymore; as I've received incredible and compassionate care here.

  • I love how many Canadians are on this BMB! I'm from Vancouver, but temporarily live in the Los Angeles area.
  • My doctor doesn't do my first appointment until close to 1w weeks which will be ok because my husband just started a new job and we need insurance to kick in.

I remember with my 1st (this is our 4th) thinking that having to wait until 12 weeks to be seen was unheard of! And it was tortuous. Now I'm so not concerned about it, I feel like I could wait until the end of my pregnancy. Lol. Obviously I would NEVER do that but ITS funny how that changes over the years.

Really though is there a sweeter sound than hearing your baby's heartbeat for the first time?! That certainly never changes.
  • @crazypuglady with my first, my due date was off by about 2 weeks between LMP and ovulation. So, when I went in for what they thought was my 8 week appointment, the ultrasound only measured 6 weeks. It was just the roll-away machine, so not very detailed. The doctor was all concerned, even though I was adamant that 6 weeks made sense based on when I ovulated. They didn't calm down until I had a better quality ultrasound the following week, which showed that baby was measuring perfectly to match my ovulation.

Moral of the story: don't let them freak you out if they handle it the way they did with me. As long as baby is matching up with what you know to be when you ovulated, then no worries!

  • I'm in Alberta, Canada and my dating ultrasound is scheduled at 8 weeks. I had one done at the hospital on Tuesday night though and I'm going back for a follow up next Tuesday due to some bleeding. I believe for scheduled ultrasounds, I have 3 in total throughout the pregnancy as long as I don't have any more complications.

    TTC since 01/2011
07/2013 - First round of testing  - CD21 and CD3 blood tests and HSG  + multiple SAs for DH

11/2013 - Consult with RE regarding treatment. Benched due to finances
2014/2015 - Took break from pursuing treatment, moved to a new province
06/2016 - DH redid SA as per direction from new family doctor - Counts have increased!!
07/2016 - Consult with new RE - ordered a repeat HSG
09/2016 - Providing no issues on HSG - Scheduled to start first IUI with Clomid
    01/17/2017 - First IUI with Clomid - BFP - M/C @ 9 weeks

Come on Baby "B"! Time to come out and play!

  • @reneeannemm & @jessafishy, I'm in Manitoba and we only get 1 US at 20 weeks unless we are high risk. My OB is giving me an early one at 7 weeks because I had a MMC in the Fall. Otherwise my first appointment wouldn't be until 12 weeks and US at 20.
  • jessafishy I would go crazy if that happened to me  :# . I would have to find some way to get an appointment before 20 weeks

@beezeemarie- Thanks! Yeah.. I'm afraid of just that... They'll make a big stink about it being too small and they'll make me come back again. Not that I wouldn't love to come back and see my little bean again.. but that would be more time off and an extra $35 copay you know? Eh who knows... maybe they'll see my chart and listen to me.

ETA- DH told me to lie and tell them my LMP was really later than it was :D

Not gonna lie, I considered doing this to avoid the "well LMP was this date but I ovulated two days earlier so we should go by that date" conversation.

@crazypuglady smart hubby! LOL. I don't think they'll make a big deal about the discrepancy, especially since you've been charting and have a pretty confident idea of when you ovulated :)
  • @crazypuglady @jessafishy I totally considered it this time around as well, but decided not to because it was only a difference of a few days. When I told the nurse I was sure of when I ovulated, I got a snarky "that's fine, but we will still use your LMP."

Got to love when they do that for first appointment then change EDD to what matches ovulation...like we don't pee on enough sticks and know our bodies lol

  • @jessafishy it totally pissed me off. I was ranting hard to my mom about it, and she asked me if it was really a big deal. Probably not, but, pregnancy rage.

  • My first appointment isn't until March 17 and it seems like a lifetime away! I'll be around 10 weeks. I wasn't even sent for a blood test to confirm so I find myself continuing to take random pregnancy tests at home just to keep confirming myself haha...Maybe it's not normal for them to have you get a blood test done but for some reason I expected it..
  • I have a phone appointment on Monday (anyone else have that? I'm not sure what will be accomplished) and first ultrasound on the 28th, when I will be about 8 weeks. They wanted to do it the week before, but H is going to be in Mexico that week, so we're waiting until he gets back.
  • @soprano19 my ob had me do a phone appointment too. It was just with the nurse. She went over my medical history, including prior pregnancy, etc. She then went over the to-dos and no-nos. it was pretty uneventful.

I guess that's useful... I'm just so anxious to actually see the doctor, have a US, and have her say that everything is good!
  • @beth3219 No lie, that's exactly what I'll be doing until my appointment. Just the cheapies though. Because ain't nobody got money for the expensive ones. They didn't call for a blood test yet either.

  • The wait until the first appt is the worst!!! I have mine on march 3, when I will be about 7+4. (Day before my 30th!) My last two were mmc so nervous is an understatement! Hoping the wait goes by quickly for all of us.

  • For my first pregnancy, they didn't do a blood test. When I asked about it, they said hpt have gotten so good that if you've turned a test there is rarely a need to confirm. They only do a blood test if there are concerns (such as previous loss) that would make them want to see beta levels.

  • Things are done really weird here. I need to call my family doc who refers me to the OBS clinic here. They see all the pregnant women in the county (other than those seeing MW). I won't get an appointment with them until around 12w. It seems like forever!
  • Mine is March 10 at 8w...I'm seriously not sure how I can wait 4 more weeks!!
  • My appt is March 15th. Seems like an eternity! Thankfully, I have 3 dance competitions for my girls between then to keep me busy.

  • My first appointment is this Thursday. I called last week and told her that I POAS and it was positive. She didn't ask any questions, just scheduled the appointment. I have no idea what to expect, I'll only be 6wks so I don't think we will be able to see anything. Not sure why I'm going so early but we will see

@Myelhsa I'd probably drive DH crazy by then..
  • KTdidit - you might get an u/s.  Usually the heart beat starts somewhere between 5-6 so you might get to see it.  You might not - either no u/s or it might be too soon to see your particular heartbeat.  But you might get more than you expected :-)

  • I just got back from my first appointment. It was just a intake with the nurse. However, they didn't tell me ahead of time that they were going to do the glucose test. I recommend not eating for one hour before your first appointment just incase. The nurse scheduled all my appointments for the next few months and gave me some basic information.

After the appointment I went to get my blood tests/glucose test and they took something like 7-9 vials of blood. I passed out! It was so embarrassing!! I didn't have a lot to eat this morning because I felt so sick. So that probably contributed.

My next appointment is March 3rd (9 weeks) and we get to do an ultrasound!
  • oh my!! I can't watch when they take my blood.  It makes me lightheaded and I pass out.  When I know I'm going to have lots of blood drawn, I try and look away and try to carry a lollypop so I have it close by.  I find that helps.

  • @Dinosaur, they did your glucose test??? Did they give any reason as to why they'd do it so early? I've never heard of this. With DS I think I had it done at 26 weeks...
  • @mommac2017 - Nope, no reason. I think just it's standard for them. They said they would do another one around 20 weeks.
  • @Dinosaur, so strange how different it is from one doctor to the next.
