The wait to first obgyn visit

hi! I am 5 weeks and don't go to my obgyn for another 2 weeks. What did you all do to ease your mind that everything was still all ok in there?! I still have the very heavy thin white discharge and mild cramps off and on. Assuming all that is normal, but can't help but still worry! Any tips are appreciated!

Re: The wait to first obgyn visit

  • My best advice is to stay busy!!
Im one week away from my first appointment and this past week has flown by between work, feeling the nausea, and keeping up with my two daughters and a messy house.
Two weeeks will be over before you know it ;)
  • Loading the player...
  • The wait is horrible. With DS and with my MC, I didn't need have a first appointment until 12 weeks!!! Thankfully this time my OB is giving me one at 7 weeks.

Distraction is key! Keep yourself busy!
  • I am also dreading this part...I am about 5 weeks and my practice doesn't want to see you until between 10 and 12 weeks.  I am going to the use next few weeks to just get my house in order and start organizing my older child's things in preparation.
  • I've been very lucky, as my appointments have started already and are nicely spread out, so I don't have too much time to stress out between them!

Apart from that, I've been looking at this site every day and writing the percentage down on my calendar. It really helps me to see the massive drop in miscarriage risk after just a few days.

  • It is so hard. I went yesterday for a BFP "check in." My first ultrasound is in 3 weeks when I am 7 weeks and 2 days for the viability screening. Im a freakin wreck waiting for that appt. With my first I dont think I realized the HUGENESS (is that a word? no! lol) of this first ultrasound. Now that im older I am freaking until it comes. I am trying to stay busy, but im constantly checking the calendar as the date SLOWLY approaches. My mom was telling me back in the day they didnt check so much like they do now, and you got maybe one back in her day. HOW? HOW? Thats so nerve wracking!

P.S. Im aware I made a lot of my own wording up here, ha.

  • My appt isn't for another 4 weeks! Sucks! I will be 9+ weeks. I could have gone the week before but my hubby is out of town - GRRR! At least we should be able to see a good image by that time.
  • My first appointment is on March 7th. I want it to come fast but I also am very scared. My last first appointment ended with the OB telling us it wasn't a good pregnancy and I would MC. Hoping for the best this time!

  • @kmornelas29, where I live we only get 1 US at 20 weeks unless you are high risk. Because I had a MC in the fall my OB offered to do one for me at 7weeks. I am so grateful for it!

THIS 100% I wasn't nearly this stressed out with my first pregnancy. I feel like we just rolled up to that first 8 week ultrasound like no big deal. This time around i'm freaked out completely.
  • I should be able to call tomorrow if I want to go to same OB I did before, might see options though. However, because LMP and Ovulation are similar to last go around, I refuse to go when they think I am supposed to and push it a week further, trying to avoid frustrations of the seeing sac but no heartbeat first time.

  • I'm not sure where to ask this question so I'm going to ask here.

I had a MC in Oct 2016 at 7-8weeks. When I called my OBGYN they booked me in for March 7th which will make me 9wks. Should I have told her I had a MC previously to get a n appointment sooner to make sure everything is okay?

I'm really sorry for your loss. I would have mentioned it. Is this not the same doc who diagnosed your mc? They should have record of it if it is. Nonetheless, your doc would probably want to see you sooner because of your previous loss.

  • @samyv definitely mention it I had a miscarriage too in october.  Sorry for your loss.  I am currently 4w5d pregnant hopefully this is your rainbow baby good luck
  • Thanks everyone. Yes, it is the same OBGYN. I thought it was best to stick to the same one since they know what I went through. Unfortunately, being in New York she is extremely busy and sought after so books a month in advance. I will see what I can get!

  • @samyv Sorry for your loss.  I had a MC in Feb16 and FWIW, I'm having my first US at 7w with my RE who is well aware of the loss history.  So, may be worth trying to move it up some, but it's also probably okay to leave as is if they won't move it.  Did she track your HCG levels at all?

  • **Update**

The nurse said 9 weeks is perfect because by then the doctor should be able to clearly see the sack and hear a heartbeat. FX*****

  • My first appointment is scheduled for March 14 and I think it might give me a heart attack. I know it's for the best because they do a confirmation ultrasound and it would be nerve wracking to go in early and not be able to see/hear much. Especially with PGAL brain
  • I'm kind of stuck at the moment. I currently have insurance through my employer but we plan on switching to my H insurance after it kicks in on March 1st. Which means my first appointment won't be until after then. I want to call early because I know doctors can get booked for weeks but I don't know if I can do that right now or if i have to wait until we've switched over the and insurance is in affect.

  • @feeislove, I would just call now and make an appointment. Doctors, at least where I live, are so hard to get into last minute. I would just make sure whatever doctor you're going to is covered by the new insurance (preferred provider, if it's a PPO plan). Then as soon as you have your new insurance info give them a call to let them know.

  • I've got my first appt on March 13, which puts me at 10wks 3days. They do all the blood work on the first visit and I asked if they can go ahead and stick me all in one visit and do the gender blood test with the rest of it. So excited.
  • One week from today is my first appointment! The excitement is building up! 3 weeks ago I thought, it would take forever to get here...but it's almost here!

  • @feeislove Definitely go ahead and call. They won't take your insurance information until your appointment, the most they usually ask is who the provider is.

  • March 8th is my appointment. I was a little disappointed because with DS they saw me at 6 weeks and now they wanted to wait until 8 weeks. Maybe they do things differently for STMs?

  • My first appointment isn't until March 15, at that point I'll be 10 weeks 3 days. Its gonna be so hard for me to wait that long  :( .. I'm so jealous of everyone who has appointments this month
  • My first ultrasound is tomorrow. I'm starting to get really impatient as I want to know if this one is progressing or not. My first pregnancy was a blighted ovum and I had bleeding and then spotting along with super low progesterone with that one from the start. I have neither of those problems this round, so I am being very positive about it.

I have been fortunate in that my doctors are super proactive about doing betas and then ultrasounds early on. I feel like I would go nuts with anxiety if I had to wait a few more weeks.

  • @verily lucky! I wish I could have an US tomorrow, my stupid Doctors make you wait until at least 10 weeks
  • @nmingram I hope so, this pregnancy already feels like its going by slow and I'm not even 6 weeks yet  :D
  • @beautyundefined I hate the wait too. I just remind myself that I am lucky I don't live in Canada, they only do one ultrasound and it's the anatomy scan. A mom on my last BMB found out she was having twins at almost 20 weeks because that was her first US.  :o

Just called to make my first appointment, which will be on March 2nd :) I think I will be 6W6D (based on my late O, not my LMP. (According to LMP, I should be 8W2D.) Anyone know if this should be a concern? I plan on telling them that I'm not as far along as they think based on O... but as far as what should be seen, should they be able to see it a week before? (I know HB will prob be there.)

ETA- they will be doing the viability US

@crazypuglady The only concern would be if you also had late implantation and can't see a heartbeat. Could cause unnecessary stress/panic. 6w6d should be good though, you should be able to see baby and heartbeat by that point.

  • @Jessafishy Ah ok. I don't think I would have had late implantation as I got an early first BFP (9DPO). I know Drs can be pushy about following medical standards and might be concerned about a small measurement.. but I plan on showing them my chart. I just don't want to have wasted time in the appointment if it would be too early.

  • @jessafishy I'm in Canada and health insurance varies between provinces. In Ontario, they do a dating ultrasound ~7 weeks and NIPT is covered (and fertility treatments up to one cycle of IVF). I don't know how much more there is, as I haven't gotten there yet. I don't know which province only does ultrasounds at 20 weeks, but it's not any of the three I've lived in; even in Quebec where there is a severe doctor shortage.

  • @crazypuglady With my DS my first appointment was during week 6 and we saw baby and heartbeat just fine! I was also lucky that I O'd on CD14 that cycle so LMP and O date lined up. If you have your chart hopefully they will go with what you have.
