Cycle/CD: 13/20 something, I honestly didn't keep track this month. No point
Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): TWW
What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) Testing/met with urologist
How are things going? Urologist yesterday was complete vindication of how violated H was and we both laughed throughout the entire thing. It was some great comedic relief. We kept laughing all night. Externally everything looks good, just waiting on results of more blood work and genetic testing for H. Meet with the Urologist in 2 weeks.
Any questions? My AMH came back at 9.34... That's incredibly high. So I am concerned I may have some underlying PCOS that hasn't been picked up on yet. Thoughts?
GTKY: Do you watch the Super Bowl for the game or the commercials? food an commercials. My H forces me to watch some of the replays though.
@adirat Our post coital was canceled due to H's SA. Otherwise, my office does it for every body. My RE also completed all testing in one cycle too which is nice. Also, I can relate to the realization of the IF journey starting, but honestly, I have felt so much better knowing I wasn't losing my mind, and having a plan. There is definitely a lot of waiting for results but again the plan and appointments keep the time moving. Also, after my STP I O'd early too. @heatherdubrow sorry for the bruising but yeah for FET coming up! @LadyMillil I am so excited for you getting to meet your new RE! I feel like you have had a lot of patience waiting so many months to go there! I understand your jitters! @laurad75 so many good vibes to you this IVF cycle! @Saralee797 good luck with your IUI this month! @hartmich did they test your AMH yet? When my H did his SA he also said it felt weird and we were in shock at the small amount of deposit but the volume came back normal. So have faith! @zwink1 I get you. My friend told me she was feeling nauseous and I instantly started sweating and having a total fight or flight reaction to it. She wasn't even indicating she was thinking she was pregnant either. @KristoKekerooni congrats on the SA!

@juneroseruby Glad to see you back posting! My AMH is normal but I don't recall the number... When I dropped H's sample off at the lab, they said it was a normal amount so I guess we just aren't used to seeing it collected in a cup... obviously!
@mrsdaddario Glad to see you back too! It's nice to see your body is actually cooperating, that has to help this waiting period at least a little bit.
@hartmich I sort of just got caught up in the week and thought it would be easiest to post after the appt anyways. But yea I think seeing it in a cup is so different. H was so disappointed and kept saying "it felt weird". Like something didn't work right.

@juneroseruby yep mine said the same thing. Like it wasn't a real orgasm or something. I'm sure it's because it's awkward and weird to go in a cup, it just didn't seem right. I have sympathy for them, I really do. But it just makes me wish I could take care of things on my own and didn't have to depend on him
@JuneRoseRuby hey girl!! Nice to see you and also I hope things go well with the urologist! It's good to laugh once in a while even when the circumstances are tough. My AMH was also really high but I cannot remember the number. No PCOS diagnosis for me but I have had several long cycles coming off BCP. If anything my RE seemed really pleased with the high number but maybe she was thinking in case of IVF. Who knows?
@Saralee797 It is favorable for IVF because it is likely to generate a lot of eggs. I read that somewhere anyways. I'm sure from Dr. Google.

@JuneRoseRuby I just purchased the IVF journal but haven't had a chance to read it yet or look over it carefully. It looked like a good resource though!
DH: 31, Me: 27 Married May 2014 TTC #1: May 2015 September 2016-December 2016: Met with RE, fertility testing, diagnosis of tubal scarring, and plan of IVF *TW in spoiler boxes*
Surprise! Unexpected BFP 2/22/17 just when we were about to start fertility treatment!
@JuneRoseBaby Since we're on the topic of written resources, I really liked "The Art of Waiting," which was published last year. It's more memoir but follows her IF and IVF journey. I also started "Waiting for Daisy," another memoir to which I really related. I haven't finished it, mostly because I felt that I was obsessing over our IF and letting it define my life, so I've backed away. Not a reflection on any of the books mentioned. I definitely recommend taking advantage of these resources, especially at the beginning of the treatment journey.
I have been curious about memoirs. I was nervous I would hate it or be bitter, or be too hopeful at the end. Thanks for the resources! I will look into them. I get it obsessing over IF, so I also am reading Big Little Lies at the same time. Super nerd. Reading 3 books and listening to the new Anna Kendrick Scrappy Little Nobody...
ETA @kyersten let me know what you think! I have it on my Amazon Wish List waiting to buy it once we decide on an IVF date.

@JuneRoseRuby I purchased the journal and sent it back - I was hoping it would be more like a workbook journal that I could keep track of meds and appts in. It was very text heavy and I didn't feel like I needed that after reading other books like TCOYF, Impatient Women's Guide to Getting Pregnant and It Starts With the Egg - I loved all three of those. I ended up buying the Me, Myself and IVF diary on etsy instead which was back ordered so I'm waiting impatiently to receive it.
I should read Dr. Domar's book. I receive acupuncture at her Boston clinic.

@laurad75 thanks for the input! I also thought it would be a workbook/guided journaling. The beginning of Dr Domar's book, she says if you find yourself bitter at others around you for their ease at getting pregnant, this book is for you. If you find yourself avoiding social media because of pregnancy announcements, this book is for you. I just kept saying, yes, yes, yes, this is me... So I'll keep you updated on the rest of the book if I like it.

I liked Domar's Conquering Infertility. I posted the following about it in the mental health thread. Thanks for the other reading suggestions! Most of what I've read so far is technical and related to treatments.
I read something in Alice Domar's Conquering Infertility that I am going to try, and I thought it may be of interest to you.
In the book, she writes that women often feel like their male partners aren't sufficiently vocal or supportive of TTC struggles, while men often feel like their female partners are too fixated and talk about things too much without it being productive. (Nailed us, for sure.) She recommends trying a strategy where each evening, you spend 10 minutes of uninterrupted, undistracted time talking about TTC -- how you are feeling, what you've learned, any next steps, etc. The most important thing is for each person to share how he or she is feeling in sort of a "safe space" setting that is also time limited. The goal is for each person to get out their feelings and give support to the other, then for it to be over so you can do other things and focus on other things.
I talked to DH about this last night and we are going to try this now that we're going to the RE. One of the things he communicated to me last night is that when I feel "unsupported," he is actually trying to be strong and not put his sadness onto me because he thinks I can't handle it. He said he is absolutely as devastated as I am every cycle, but he doesn't want me to have to bear that when I am in so much physical as well as psychic pain. Hearing that gave me a different perspective from "I have my period and he doesn't even care" that sometimes crosses my mind.
Anyway, just wanted to share in case it's useful. I'm liking the Conquering Infertility book so far -- it's all about ways to reduce stress and anxiety, which I need.
I wasn't able to get on to post yesterday so I'm a little late to say so but @KristoKekerooni, what fantastic news about your husband's SA results! Like others have said, it selfishly gives me some hope. I've never experienced a loss so it's hard for me to speak to the ethical dilemma of the matter, but whole-heartedly agree with PP's that the largest consideration (for me) would be the impact of such a decision on YOUR mental health and well being. I can't pretend to relate to the pain you've likely been through or to really give you sound advice, but I'm happy to read that it sounds like you're being given some options that will allow you to make the best decision for yourself when you are ready, and at the end of the day it is good news to be armed with some options.
@hartmich so sorry to hear about the SA incident. My DH did not want me anywhere near him when he did his (also at home), and was really shy and nervous about the whole thing. I'm glad to hear that your DH was able to calm down and apologize to you/think more rationally about it when all was said and done.
@kyersten I love those stickers! I'm obsessive about my planners and calendars, so they're right up my alley if the time comes that we need IVF. What a thoughtful gift...it's great your mom is so supportive!
@mrsdaddario It's nice to hear how you are doing and as someone who is currently not ovulating, it is really encouraging to hear you are ovulating on your own right now. Temping can be frustrating/discouraging when nothing is really happening, so it's great that your charts are finally shedding some insight.
@JuneRoseRuby Thanks for the recommendations...I definitely might look into the one for the male perspective on things. And @adirat I love that suggestion. DH recently commented how every conversation between us eventually, somehow ties back to TTC or when we have (or don't have) kids and I don't even catch myself doing it anymore. This is great advice (for us anyways).
@magnolia131 We were exactly the same way and it has helped SO much to compartmentalize it a little but in a way that we are truly listening to each other. I hope it helps you too!
@adirat That is AWESOME advice! I catch myself obsessively worrying out loud about alll of this and while DH wouldn't complain, I think he would like a break from talking about it sometimes. So I love the setting aside time to discuss it.

@JuneRoseRuby - I did get that book for my DH to read! I think it actually was a good fit for him, he learned a lot about the lingo & what to expect from IF workup and treatment. It has a lot of humour in it which helps keep the men interested (plus it's actually written by a guy). HTH.

@seethosestars Oh I am glad YH liked the book! My friend's H got 5 pages into the book and didn't finish it so she did and she liked it. I am not sure if H will read it or not, but I hope he would. Maybe it will be a silly V day gift. @adirat I need to pick it back up this weekend and read more of it. I put it on pause this week to take a break from all things IF. Also, I can't put down Big Little Lies.

@juneroseruby I love Big Little Lies. Have you read any of her other books?
@kristokekerooni I'm glad to hear your H says the SAs get easier! This is just speculation, but maybe once they hear the results (good or bad), it just kind of takes the pressure off and removes the unknown. That's great to hear your H's numbers have improved so much! I do not know how much about the frag numbers, etc. but I will hope and pray for you that you come to a decision that makes you happy and comfortable.
@hartmich - Yeah, that definitely might be part of it. I know for my H, when we got bad results it was almost better than getting good results. Only because he wasn't anxious every single time because he knew it would be bad. Anything not bad was just a nice surprise. Funny how their brains work. I'm surprised you haven't received the results back yet... The test is done immediately upon receipt, so you should have results. Thanks for your thoughts, I've been researching like a mad woman and there's not much research done, and the research that is out there doesn't quite fit our situation so it's really hard to form a solid opinion.

@adirat @KristoKekerooni am I correct in understanding for antral folli count, it's 12 combined they want to see? Like 6 on each side is A-OK? ...asking for a friend... ;)
EATA aaand I found my answer in this nifty chart I thought I'd share.... from Advanced Fertility on Chicago website. It is Total.
@kristokekerooni Oh we got the results, I posted in the weekly randoms thread last night because I was having a dramatic freak out. (We got them a day late because H's voicemail was full and our nurse couldn't leave a message when she called Wednesday afternoon *insert HUGE EYE ROLL from hartmich about this*). His sperm count is on 11 million (per ml? I believe) with 2% morph, so basically... not very good. Not the worst, but not good.
@hartmich I read The Husband's Secret. I just started getting into her. I like easy reads like that.

@BusinessWife - Yes! Correct! I only know that because I had I think one on one side, but like 14 or so on the other and I freaked and RE said no worries. haha
@hartmich - Oh, I'm sorry. I tend to stay in my little hole here, so I missed that. It's reallllly important that you don't base everything on this one result. They can very pretty dramatically. Are you doing a retest in 3 months? I'm assuming your doc told you all the lifestyle changes? Also, 11 mill/mL really is within the range that it could have been a fluke, or that adjustments can be made for it to pop back up. It's still not what you want to hear, and I'm really sorry for that. As for morph, take it with a grain of salt. It's so debated and who knows if it really is all that bad. as a general rule, my OB says low morph is only "bad" if it accompanies a low motility, very low count, etc. And that's after repeated SAs. @kristokekerooni See this is why this whole thing frustrates me... because as much as science has advanced, sometimes I think they still don't know WTF is going on with our bodies when it comes to fertility. Dr. Google made it seem like 2% morph is ok with a high count... but since count isn't great, our chances aren't the best. They did not mention a retest or any lifestyle changes yet, although our next step is to schedule an in-person meeting with our RE (not just the nurse who called with results) to go over all of the results from the millions of tests that have been run. In the meantime however, I have to go get the rubella vaccine because I am not immune, which benches us for a month anyway. Again not a big deal but just adds salt to the wounds, ya know? So, sigh.
A-FUCKING-MEN, @hartmich ! Fertility is like an effing black hole when it comes to science. So frustrating. People are out there growing arms and esophagus' from a single cell, but can't tell me WTAF is happening inside me.
AAANYWAY. From what I understand, if the only issue is morph, then they don't stress. if the morph is paired with motility/count issues, then it's an issue. But really, it's not so much an issue they try to fix. It's like, if there were motility issues, it's because they're the wrong shape, so let's fix that. If there are count issues, then either A, the morph still is really okay and will be fine once you get count up, or (more rarely) there could be a DNA issue that causes the sperm to not be generated in the quality or quantity necessary.
Since you didn't get much info, generally, he should do the following:
Limit alcohol
Stop smoking/drugs
lower weight (if that's an issue)
leafy greens
antioxidants & vitamins
Boxers not briefs
No hot tubs, hot baths, etc.
If he bikes a lot, he needs to chill.
A little bit can really go a long way here. Also, I know we all hate the whole "just relax" deal, but stress actually does have an effect on sperm production as well as longevity. Which translate to three months ago or anytime in between (since sperm takes three months to fully regenerate, but sits till it's ejaculated).
I'm super sorry that to add insult to injury you have to bench. Ugh. But maybe you can frame it as you are (both) getting as healthy as possible for your future LO? I wish you all the best, update us with what the RE says.

@hartmich I think that delivering results over the phone like that (and not even all the results) just causes panic. Tales like this make me glad that my RE's office didn't release the results to us until we were literally sitting in front of the RE and he could explain what everything meant/where he saw potential issues.
Anyway, I'm sorry about the low count result. @KristoKekerooni has said pretty much everything I'd say. I'd add that if the results from your second SA are similar, jump right on over to a urologist who specializes in fertility. We did three rounds of IUI before seeing the urologist and it was really a waste of time and money. RE's are not prepared to deal with treating male fertility issues--and there are treatments. Get a recommendation from your RE if the time comes. Know that any treatment will likely take at least three months to have an impact. Good luck and best wishes!
@hartmich , Echoing, @Bababatty , seeing a urologist is definitely the first step, after seeing if the second test shows similar results. They'll check for varicoceles, see if it's a hormone (testosterone) issue, or if it's a physical issue. Opposite though, my RE did more than the RU, mostly because my RE did specialize in MFI. So there is that. It's worth listening to your RE though, just to see where they are in terms of MFI.
and just FYI, an IUI is most successful with > 10 million sperm after wash. You tend to loose roughly half (depending on your specific counts) through the wash. So you want to aim for 20 million total at least before you totally bank on an IUI.

@KristoKekerooni That's good to know that your RE could deal with the MFI! All of the REs in my office were like, "You need to see a urologist. Have fun!" I'm glad there are some offices that do have that specialty. The urologist office we're seeing is a huge pain. I can't wait until we can return to our RE's office, haha.
@Bababatty I'm not sure which method I prefer. Last night, I would have agreed that I wish we had been in person to really understand the results. But now that I've had a good night's sleep and had some time to process it on our own, I'm kind of glad they gave us time to digest before we start discussing next steps, etc. But honestly, neither way is right or wrong I think. Also, good to know about the urologist vs RE... I just looked on their site, and they have urologists as part of the practice so at least that'll be helpful.
@KristoKekerooni That's really interesting, because they did mention a second test involving a wash before they would recommend one method vs the either. So it's nice to see confirmation on here that it seems like they're taking the right steps, etc. I wish I could fast forward to just get this vaccine over with and the next appointment here, but I guess this is a good practice for my patience.
@hartmich. I'm so sorry your going through this right now, and I hear you on the waiting game... right there withya.
Question for all of you with MFI, are you all consistent about your sex so that you keep the sperm cycling to new sperm? H and I tend to be cyclical with our sex, sometimes we are rabbits and then other times life gets in the way and its on the back burner for way too long. And honestly, after finding out the results of his SA, both of our sex drives have been in the toilet. Now I am wondering if we should be aiming for at least every 3 days to hopefully generate better sperm. Have any of you ever gotten advice from your RE or RU that wanted consistent sex?

@JuneRoseRuby we had mfi in addition to my pcos. We were never given any advice on how often to have sex. And we were pretty much the same as you, very cyclical. It didn't end up mattering though, since we did ivf with icsi.

Thanks for your thoughts, I've been researching like a mad woman and there's not much research done, and the research that is out there doesn't quite fit our situation so it's really hard to form a solid opinion.

Hold some home, friend. I hope to hear good news in a few months about that SA (or you get KU in the meantime)!

- Limit alcohol
- Stop smoking/drugs
- lower weight (if that's an issue)
- leafy greens
- antioxidants & vitamins
- Boxers not briefs
- No hot tubs, hot baths, etc.
- If he bikes a lot, he needs to chill.
A little bit can really go a long way here. Also, I know we all hate the whole "just relax" deal, but stress actually does have an effect on sperm production as well as longevity. Which translate to three months ago or anytime in between (since sperm takes three months to fully regenerate, but sits till it's ejaculated).I'm super sorry that to add insult to injury you have to bench. Ugh. But maybe you can frame it as you are (both) getting as healthy as possible for your future LO? I wish you all the best, update us with what the RE says.

Good luck and best wishes!
and just FYI, an IUI is most successful with > 10 million sperm after wash. You tend to loose roughly half (depending on your specific counts) through the wash. So you want to aim for 20 million total at least before you totally bank on an IUI.
