I wore a corset for 4months of rehearsals for a play in college, for something like 3-4hrs every night. after a months it got kinda loose as my body adjusted to it, didn't think much of it and they put me in a tighter one, and then a tighter one. By the end of the production I developed what my medical father called "diaphragmactic irritation" : so basically I got so used to not breathing enough that I would involentarily violently inhale -- making what sounded Iike a really intense hiccup.
it was so bad in college that my friends could find me across campus or levels up studying in the library, and a few ppl knew me as "the girl that makes that weird noise" hahah.
Luckily several years later it's pretty much gone!! But I still do on occasion. My husband, the only one who finds it cute and not like some weird dinosaur squawk, says it's my mating call.
I'm what I call wicked left handed (technical term) Only about 10%-15% of people are lefties and of these people only 1/3 are female. Both of my parents are also righty, which only 2% of lefties can say. I think that gives me about a .1% chance of being lefty if my pregnant brain is still capable of math haha
Interesting question! I love superheroes, but HATE reading comic books and graphic novels. I love thinking about the universes that dc and marvel create, but I'd rather just read about them on the internet.
Oh man....I can't even answer this question because Im probably the weirdest person I know....but as far as special talents, I am a great impersonator and can do almost any accent! I also have a knack for predicting TV show plot twists and which song will come on next on the radio haha. +1 to being ambidextrous too!
I'm a measurement scientist. I measure everything and plot it and extrapolate into the past and future. I get real nerdy about my hobbies for this reason. Here are my weights from every day of each of my 3 pregnancies for example!
I love this thread! I might post more than once lol
I'm also really good at figuring out what people look like. I'm always telling DH "that guy looks like a gibbon" or "she looks like this cartoon character" lol. then i send him comparative pics via text to prove my point.
@Cbeanz That. Is. So. Cool! I haven't the foggiest idea what any of it means or just exactly how you extrapolate measurements through time itself but Im fangirling so hard! A lady scientist!!!
I use marinara sauce instead of dressing on my salads & veggies. When I was in high school I read the entire encyclopedia for fun & handwrote my own summarized version. My burps sound like hiccups....and my toes are slightly webbed, which is a trait passed down from my mom.
I wouldn't say this makes me special, but I'm a derby girl and it's rare if I randomly meet someone else who plays. Any time I tell people I play roller derby (obviously I'm sidelined for a while) they think it's the coolest thing on earth. It is a pretty bad ass sport, but I think people think it's a lot cooler than it really is! Also, a weird thing about me is when I eat, the different foods on my plate CANNOT touch each other. Just no. My husband likes to joke that I need to use those plates that have the 3 different segments. The only time I believe in segregation is when I'm eating!
People seem to think I'm weird for eating everything in sandwich form. If I have spaghetti for supper I will load up bread with whatever is on my plate and eat it like a sandwich. If I have mashed potatoes and chicken.. it gets put into my bread and eaten like a sandwich. Stew... In a sandwich. Doesn't even matter what. Shepherds pie? You guessed it.. in a sandwich.
I sadly have no talents.. other than these sandwich eating skills.
1.) I "chew" my drinks when I am really thirsty. No idea why; I've done it since I was a baby. My mom suspects it was something I did when I was very young and still had an open cleft palate. Perhaps it was an instinctive way to get the liquid to stay in my mouth and not squirt out my nose?
3.) Apparently, I have a very expressive face. It never fails that when I am attending a lecture or in-service, I get called out by the instructor/speaker because I'll have a very visible opinion, lol. It gets annoying, because I'm shy and don't need everyone's eyes on me. If I want to voice my opinion, I'll raise my damn hand.
4.) I feel like it's hard for me to really bond with groups of people, because I am too nerdy for those who like fashion and typical feminine interests, and too girly/"mainstream" for those who are super into sci-fi, fantasy, and/or gaming. DH has a similar problem in that he likes sports more than the average gamer/sci-fi nerd but not athletic enough for those who are really into sports. I think we get along really well, because we have always felt a bit like the odd ones out. Not outcasts or anything, but just shy and awkward. Constantly. All the time.
+1 for another lefty with right-handed parents! A story relating to that, I went to a math and science university and we were out to eat with about 11 people (mostly male), but when looking around the table we realized that 10/11 people sitting there were left-handed. Makes me wonder about the correlation between left-handedness and enjoying math/science (although of course my fellow scientists know correlation doesn't equal causation .
My random? I have a third nipple! Makes me feel closer to Chandler (I know there are some Friends fans out there!)
I wish I had some cool special talents or interesting body part... but I do have a strange obsession with words and their definitions. I cannot just read a word I've never seen or heard without defining it. I love having a wide variety in my vocabulary to express a thought.
I am a massive bibliophile. This extends beyond just loving to read - I love learning about books, how they are made, various literary trends, etc. I worked at Borders before they closed down and at Books-A-Million for a while and in all my life, I think the best compliment I ever, ever received was a young woman who told me once that she never really liked reading, but then I got her hooked onto a few different series and now she loves to read - this girl was a regular at my bookstore by the time I left there, and when I moved and had to get rid of a lot of my books, she literally filled the entire trunk of her car with what I was giving away. I was so happy that my books went to a good home!
I very, very much dislike being the center of attention. I know that my work ladies are throwing me a surprise baby shower during our staff meeting tomorrow and I am tickled and honored but also dreading it for that reason.
I fangirl at "celebrities" that most people don't even know - usually anime voice actors. Last year, I went to Kansas City Comicon and was chatting with someone at the book booth, and when I realized that the person I'd be talking to was Todd McCaffrey, I suddenly couldn't talk anymore except to ask for his picture. I am super socially awkward and once, when I went to a concert of my favorite band, the Protomen, I handed one of the band members a card and said very quickly, "Here, I wrote you guys a card, sorry I'm socially awkward" and immediately turned around and walked away.
I met my husband through an online RPG. In the game, our characters are father and daughter. AWKWARD.
@Cbeanz omg omg that makes my data heart so happy. So cool!!
Along the same kind of lines, obviously I like data. I've had last.fm hooked up to a good portion of the things I listen to music on since about 2009, and it's a lot of fun to see how my listening trends have changed over the years. For example, there was a giant spike in "The Wiggles" when DS was about 1.5-2.
Seriously, all of you ladies are fiercely unique and have some amazing talents or personality traits! This thread was a great idea haha. your kids are going to have so much to learn from you and I hope they realize how wicked rad their mothers are
Omg @datalover13 I remember last.fm! I wish I still used it consistently, that would be neat to see my trends too.
I'm sure there's a lot weird about me but I'm not too sure what to share. I also don't like being center of attention so I don't have any special party skills to draw attention to me lol.
I guess I find hobbies or interests and go all in on them until I get tired or find a new hobby. In the last 7ish years? I've gone through Pandora/Trollbeads, Alex and Ani bracelets, and a couple others that have stuck around like jewelry/diamonds (more the technical aspects that go into choosing/finding the best combinations for the shiniest diamond given a budget, and also antique jewelry) and "planning" in the creative almost scrapbook sense.

1) Up until this pregnancy, I've been on a competitive dragon boating team since moving to Ireland. Last year we went to Venice and I participated in the Vogalonga where you paddle for 30 km through Venice, Berano and Murano. It took 3 hours and was the most difficult fun thing I've ever done.
2) I've been to 21 countries... travelling is my most favorite hobby in the world. Can't wait to get the LO his first passport!!
I don't know if there's anything super unique about me. I'm mostly just a socially awkward, somewhat nerdy runner who likes to sing. DH laughs because I get really excited about food. I do the "happy food dance" when I eat something yummy. It's completely subconscious because I don't realize I'm doing it until someone points it out.

Love it! We got our son a passport when he was 18 months and we took him with us to Europe during Thanksgiving in 2015. We went to London and Paris and it made for a memorable adventure! Traveling with a little definitely has it's share of craziness, but I wouldn't trade any of it for the world. Traveling is for sure something that I look forward to sharing with our kids because I feel like it makes them more well rounded to see how other people live. I don't want them to only know the American way!
I love this! You ladies are all even more amazing than I thought!!!
Ok so maybe this isn't weird but it's uncommon: when not pregnant I pull on my Grunden overalls and head out on the workboat with DH and help with the very physical labor of farming offshore oysters. We own a farm and oyster farming is a boys club for sure. We went to an oyster conference recently and usually other farmers only speak to DH when talking details about the farm but I love to talk about tunicates and phytoplankton. I love the look on the older salty fisherman's faces when they realize that I also can operate the winch and hauler and can pull the boat down the longlines just as well as they could.
I also love taxidermy. I have a chipmunk under a glass dome at home and I really want a pheasant. I love natural history museums and taking photos of the animals then captioning what they are thinking. They always look surprised or slightly suspicious to me. I think DH is the only one who thinks it's funny but it's hilarious to me.
@jenny0228 Yassss thats so cool! Oyster farming sounds really interesting and I love that you bring girl power to the field!
@npaulie what exactly is a dragon boating team and does the boat look like a dragon?? Im a teeeeeeny bit obsessed with dragons Im so jealous of your life- I grew up in Houston but my mom raised us with European literature and film and customs, and have always always wanted to travel there. Plus living in Ireland?! Dream!!!!
@npaulie@kiyamurph I'm with you on loving to travel! We got our DD a passport when she was a few months old! The hardest part was trying to get both of her ears in the picture because she kept turning her head. We got her with her eyes open even though that it isn't a requirement for when they are super young.
I have to do a quick turn around to get this next LO a passport! I already booked an international flight for this summer. (Had to give baby a fake birthday - read online about people who have booked flights for unborn children). The longest part of the process is ordering the birth certificate so that you can get the passport.
@silverbulletband dragon boating is similar in appearance to rowing but you have a shorter paddle and the position is different. There are also normally 16-18 people paddling on the boat the boat looks like a long skinny canoe, and they literally just attach a dragon head to the front. Haha
@canadianinthesouth luckily our child will be born a dual citizen, so I'm just going to get a passport with whichever country can get it to me quickest. The embassy here by passes the normal channels you use when in the US, so I think we can get a passport in 1-2 weeks for LO. Planning to fly home to the US when he's 2months so my family can meet him
@npaulie the part that took the longest was getting the birth certificate, I had mail in request forms and get it mailed back to me before applying for the passport (although I do think there was a rush option). Nice that you can get the actual passport so quickly! 2 months should be plenty of time for you
I don't know if there's anything super unique about me. I'm mostly just a socially awkward, somewhat nerdy runner who likes to sing. DH laughs because I get really excited about food. I do the "happy food dance" when I eat something yummy. It's completely subconscious because I don't realize I'm doing it until someone points it out.
I totally wiggle in my seat without realizing it when I enjoy my food, my husband pointed it out to me
Oh that reminds me of another one... I never realized till DH pointed out a few years ago, but I often randomly just say aloud the names of places or signs I see as we walk past them if we aren't talking about anything. For example... (walk walk walk) oh, doughnuts (walk walk) do not cross (walk walk walk) live music...
@npaulie so funny - I was saying to DH a few years ago after we took a road trip with my mom in car, how she does exactly that, and how she's done it all my life. She'll just say the name of a street, or a restaurant name. He pointed out that I do it too - and now I realize that I DO! ha! I wonder if LO will inherit it as the third generation, haha!
I have crooked pinky fingers because of my dad, who has REALLY crooked pinky fingers. (It's a little bit inconvenient though, for both of our guitar-playing.) I'm excited to see if my son gets them too!
I am a really fast reader, and capable of focusing on books at the expense of everything else when I want to. So just before the 7th Harry Potter book came out, I spent two full days re-reading books 1-6, then got the 7th at a midnight release party and stayed up to read it until about 6:00 in the morning.

I can't remember names of roads or give directions, but if my husband says "remember that small cafe we went to 7 years ago where you ate a bagel with lox?" I can drive directly there no questions asked using only landmarks. Like I remember we turned at the white house with the green mailbox then at the crooked fence we made a left. Same thing with actors/actresses. I can't remember their names but I know the third guy on the left behind the main character was in an episode law & order and played a murderer & the whole plot of the episode they were in.
