Woke up to an email from MIL about who to invite to the baby shower. She wants to invite like 10 extra people that "played a big told in DH's life." DH was like ummm none of those people played a big role in my life. Also, none of them were even invited to the wedding so I told her it would be weird to invite them to a baby shower if they weren't invited to the wedding. I'm already irritated that her and my mom insist they have to invite their 4-5 closest friends to everything!! Friends that they never see anymore because they live out of state!! Ahhh!!!
@alm52386 i feel your pain! my mum did the same thing for our very small and personal gender reveal party and when we didnt give in to what she wanted, she just threw a tantrum and sulked through the whole party. i'm foreseeing the same thing happening for the baby shower! i dont get it...it's not THEIR function! if they want to invite their friends, they should throw a birthday party or something and invite them then!

  • @michaela080 in DH's defense... he didn't tell me about it. I saw his mom was blowing up his phone with texts and thought something must be wrong so I looked at his messages, but me, apparently. He said it was unsolicited, but he very well could have vented to her earlier in the day. I was just shocked because she's told me about times when DH was a baby where she had begged and cried with my FIL to not go play golf on the weekends and how she had to start taking antidepressants after DH was born. She painted a completely different picture to my DH just to make it seem like he should be waited on hand and foot and I should be grateful to do it. She even said that he need to "stay in our lanes"

I do the vast majority of housework, child rearing etc. because it just makes sense for me to, but him having quality time with his daughter is a good thing and I have no idea why my MIL would be discouraging him from continuing to build that relationship. That's what bothered me the most.
  • @doodleoodle she put that sh*t in writing?!?!  I thought she was just going off and your DH repeated... assumption on my part.  Sorry you're having to deal with this and she seems to be playing both sides... so lame and unfair.
  • @mirdamae03 I have the Cuisinart! I use it for just about everything, so I hope it's not busted. It might just need a new sealing gasket.

What kind do you have? Any fav recipes?
  • @swanbrooner Gotta love the 8th grade! One of my biggest regrets from being in the classroom is not taking more pictures of hilarious student work.

  • Maybe this is an UO but I dgaf who my family invites to my shower.  I sent my sister a list per her request, and specifically asked her to go over it with my parents to see if there were people they wanted to add or delete. There are at least 10 of my mom's friends on that list to begin with.  Some I've seen weekly my entire life, some I've met once.  I also asked my SIL if she would like her best friend invited.  DH doesn't have a big family and most live on the other side of the country.  Since Mil isn't with us, it will literally be SIL and my family and friends. I'd rather her have her best friend there, who DH grew up with, so she feels comfortable.  To me the shower isn't about just me.  My mom and dad are excited for their 6th grandkid, my SIL is pumped to be an Aunt, they should be able to share that with their friends.  Andplusalso, they are throwing the shower, they are paying for it, they could invite everyone they have ever met for all I care, just make sure there is decent food...
  • @berg I agree! My mom asked for my list and as long as they were on there, I didn't care who came. My mom would ask a question every so often, but she threw the shower so she got to plan the thing. It was a gift to me and I would never throw a fit about anything done for me.

I just threw a baby shower for my best friend. I asked for her list and I added a few. She knew nothing about the shower until she showed up and she couldn't have been more happy and appreciative.
  • @Wino0920 What a great friend you are to throw a shower for your best friend!  Glad she was appreciative of your effort!

@swanbrooner I have the Power Pressure XL, but have really been debating on getting the Instant Pot mostly for the yogurt feature. We haven't gotten too crazy, but I love being able to throw frozen chicken in and have it ready to eat 15 min later. It makes the perfect shredded chicken too for tacos, etc.

  • @Stankonia2014 That is the worst. I don't understand how that is even a difficult question to answer. "It could. It could also just mean that that person prefers those clothes. We all get to wear whatever we are must comfortable in, and people have all different reasons for the choices they make." The end. Easy. There is literary no need to express any opinion. Idiot.

Well, guess we know the teacher's feeling on that subject....
Seriously, what an inappropriate platform to try and influence impressionable kids with their own opinion. I sincerely hope none of the kids there walked away feeling conflicted thanks to Ranger Rick's desire to slip in their own agenda.
Also, good call on e-mailing the principle.

When I was student teaching we were learning about dinosaurs, and I had a kid ask me if God was older than the dinosaurs. I said, "I'm not sure, ask your parents". That's been my answer for everything since then that could be at all controversial and doesn't have to do with the actual facts of the content I am trying to teach. Luckily I teach math now, so it's all pretty non-controversial. I'm glad you emailed the principal @Stankonia2014

I feel like I've said that about something with kids. It's a great answer for difficult questions like that!

  •  @mrt, that's exactly what I would've expected him to say. Either remain neutral or defer to parents. He's a student teacher, hopefully he'll learn his lesson and defer to parents from now on. :)
  • @mrt  I had a third grader ask me a God/science question this year. I told him that my job was to take the science perspective (and gave him the scienyifix facts) and that he should discuss the religious side with his parents. I also had a student ask me what gay meant.....sent tthat one home too. There are some issues that parents should have the right to educate their children on especially issues that people are very opinionated about.

  • @Wearmi1. Thanks, DH said that he was going to change my ring tone to Taylor Swift and then call me repeatedly at school for her benefit.
