Re: A Big Thread for Dumb Questions

  • Reading your post, @kerils  made my breasts hurt - my breasts start hurting if I don't wear a bra when pregnant and I'm pretty small to start with - normally a c cup. you must be a young thing to be able to go bra less, lol. I felt fine with shelved nursing tanks and nursing bras but once I wasn't nursing so much, I remember looking at a picture and realizing I need to get some new real bras that support. They were like, hanging halfway down my chest!

  • @kerils I didn't like wearing bras while nursing. If they are too tight they can cause clogged ducts. You just don't want loose material rubbing against your nipples because they could be sensitive/painful at times, and the stimulation could cause you to leak. I hardly ever needed breast pads, that will vary by person. You'll probably be ok with any tank tops, but if you're nursing on demand nursing tanks will definitely make your life easier. I liked to get tanks with a little padding (like the pads that go in a bathing suit top) because my nipples were gigantic and hard all the time while I was nursing.
  • @kerils I couldn't wear any nursing tanks or bras with any underwire or padding the entire time I nursed. I would get a clogged duct if even my stethoscope around my neck was touching my breast in the same spot without moving for a few hours. I ended up finding these lifesaving bras at target that had clips like nursing bras but without the stupid strip in between the cup and strap. They're ratty AF but they saved me, they didn't even feel like wearing a bra but gave me the minimal support I needed. I really wish nursing tanks worked for me.

  • @caribbeanmama probably...it's really hard physical activity though so keep that in mind. In my first pregnancy I told my husband I couldn't lift more than 10lbs so I got away with a lot  :D
I shoveled about 4 weeks ago (while nauseous) and that seemed to go okay...  I was thinking it would be fine - our driveway isn't very big.  But all of a sudden Mr. Chivalrous declares shoveling while pregnant is dumb and promised to shovel before leaving for work moving forward.
  • @kerils I honestly cannot imagine dragging these gigantic boulders around without a bra. They're only going to get bigger and fuller with milk. I lived in a wireless nursing bra for the first three months and only ventured into nicer bras when I needed to look somewhat presentable. Nursing tanks just smushed my boobs at roughly my belly button. :|

Dumb breastfeeding question of the day: I haven't worn bras for 2-3 years, and I'm not looking forward to going back to them now. I don't want the shoulder pain back (and yes, if I had gone through the trouble of a properly fitted bra, I may not have that problem, but I've never found a comfortable bra, even from a fancy store, and I have boobzillas especially in comparison to my overall size as a person, and it isn't worth the frustration and money to me when my boobs can hold themselves up just fine). But I know I need something to hold the nursing pads/milk catchers in. So can I get away with a tight tank top/camisole, or am I going to at least have to get some soft bras? Any other suggestions?
I wore nursing tanks with no bra in the early nursing days, but I'm just a C. Also, soft lined nursing bras shouldn't give you too much trouble if you want to try a few of those.

  • Is it okay to shovel the driveway while pregnant?  We have 3 persons coming to the house today to work for us and husband did not shovel before going to work arrrrgh!
Ugh, for your sake I would hope that H assumes it's not good for you to be shoveling the driveway pregnant...but, I did reorganize my baby's room and lots of heavy furniture over the weekend, so I wouldn't mind shoveling snow pregnant if it wasn't physically uncomfortable. I'm sorry mama.

@kerils I don't have ginormous boobs (DD while nursing coming from an A) - but I used and wore those Target bra tanks while nursing .  I didn't leave the house for months so I wore them every day.  They don't last very long ( mine are shredded too) but as a bonus they didn't make me itchy - I have sensitive skin.  I went through a few different brands from Target before finding ones that were comfy but they are worth a try.  I'm just not sure about the lift factor...
  • Granted I only have a handful so I am not a big bra person especially because I am a SAHM - I don't wear a bra when going to the store or anything - but I ain't got much. I stocked up on a bunch of nursing tanks (we have July babies after all) that had some support - it was all I needed. And they are cute and subtle enough to go under a shirt or cardigan - anything you would normally put over a spaghetti strap or tank. And they do have nursing pads that have the stickem so you can just attach right to the tank.
  • Would you create a registry for your second child? I wasn't going to because it feels kind of greedy. But I do think people might ask if I need anything and really I only need a few small items. I think mil will throw a sprinkle and ask people not to bring gifts but my both families feel more comfortable bringing something and also they like to.

Ds is two so we still have a lot so I don't think it's greedy if you truely need to rebuy bc of a surprise or age difference.
  • @morgarita - I know a lot of people do second registries for the completion coupon, so I say go for it.
  • @morgarita I say go for it and only tell people about it if they ask first.  I'm doing one for the discount on the big ticket items that we will just buy ourselves.  10% off a double stroller or a 2nd crib can save a lot!

  • @kerils You could also try a wrap sleep bra.  They don't provide much support, but they do keep nursing pads in place.

  • @morgarita like @ginger1228 said its a good idea for the completion coupon or if people ask what they can get you. But I would let friends and family ask.  I had a friend who sent out her registry with her invitations to her "gender reveal" with her 2nd kid which, I admit, I thought was a little obnoxious.  But if I had asked her what she needed for the second LO and gave me a list, I would have been happy to get her something I knew she needed rather than just an outfit or something. I say do it.

  • I have a dumb concern/question. I've always had huge boobs (cup size G) and they're only getting bigger and I'm secretly afraid my boobs are gonna smother my baby (I'm really embarrassed to have just written that lol). How did you "well-endowed" STM+ fare?
I am usually a 32 G, I find that I have to hold my breast fat away from baby's nose when feeding to keep it from blocking the baby's airway, so "breastsleeping" isn't a possibility for us. Us "lucky ones" are not good candidates for breastfeeding while baby wearing either.
  • @CarsonsMommy It goes the same way for tiny boobs! Even when they were full of milk they didn't hang enough to nurse was sleeping on my side. And baby hung too low while babywearing to feed. What is the magical boob size that can do both?!?

  • @satsumasandlemons Lol I'm 23, stopped wearing bras around age 20, and my breast pain is gone, as is my shoulder pain and back pain problems that I used to have. I didn't even realize is was the bras until I stopped wearing them and a few months later wasn't in pain anymore.Except for when I did get my periods and had hormonal related pain, which occasionally bothered my nipples enough to need a sports bra for a day.  It did take a month or two for my muscle tone to come back and for them to not be sore sans support, but I also didn't wear a lot at home by that point, so it wasn't as weird of a transition as it can be for some women who go cold turkey.

  • In the same situation. We're putting our toddler in the spare/office, and giving the new baby the nursery. I wish there was a better option but we have to make the best of it.
  • Since this thread has totally gone to boob talk, can I ask any well-endowed STMs (or FTMs further along) if they used sleeping bras and which ones they used?

My boobs have been fine during the day, but get super sore at night when I change sleep positions. I tried wearing one of my sports bras, but as a 34DD, they were still just all over the place (ugh).

I'm wondering if a sleep bra might help, but don't want to shell out a bunch of cash if they are basically a glorified sports bra!

  • @morgarita I am wondering the same thing! My DS will be 5 by the time this baby comes. We do have a lot, however, some of the things will not be good anymore!

  • @RunRestRepeat I had to add a sleep bra into my life for weeks 6-12 because I was so sore. I bought what was marketed as a sleep bra, but a underwire free nursing bra would probably work too. I think a sports bra would be TOO tight and uncomfortable. But sleeping with a bra made me WAY more comfortable.

  • I'm not that well-endowed, but I wear a sleep bra often because they're just sore and sensitive, and I hate having them uncovered. I even wore one under my hospital gown when I delivered. I have these:

  • @Cynth0104 I ended up creating a target registry more for myself but I put some big items like a new pack n play and some fun stuff like those pacifiers with the stuffed animal. Mil talked about throwing a sprinkle and I think she will agree about not telling people until they ask so I'm not to worried.

@RunRestRepeat I wear an old underwire-free nursing bra i have. My boobs have been super sore and going braless to sleep would have killed! I had purchased sleeping bras before and they did nothing but squish my boobs together and make them sweaty while I slept, and sometimes a boob would even pop out. I needed something a bit more structured, something that would hold each boob in it's place, but not be too restrictive, hence a nursing bra! I got the Medela ones (this is back in 2008 when I was pregnant with DS1) so I don't know if they even make those anymore. But I definitely encourage the nursing bra idea! Not all nursing bras are created the same, some suck so much, but I don't know what newer brands to recommend since it's been a while for me!

Lol yes!  The only reason I wouldn't is if anyone has some random bleeding then you might want to wait until it stops so you don't risk infection.  Otherwise, go for it.

  • @leilac my OB says all sex play and toys are safe. It's only different if preterm labor is a risk.
  • @leilac I'd say as long as you make sure it's super clean, go for it!

@leilac Clitoral stimulation; yes.  Vaginal vibrators; as long as you're not on pelvic rest.  Remember that climax can cause uteran contractions, so you may want to discuss it more in depth with your OB if you have a history of preterm labor.

Also, goes without saying, but make sure everything is clean.

Just FYI, I used mine a few weeks ago (externally only) and I did get brown spotting for a few days afterwards.  So don't freak out if that happens to you.  But I do believe it is safe.

  • @leilac Full Disclosure: TMI warning: I've used mine a handful of times for clitoral stimulation only (only ever did use it for that) I have had no problems, no spotting, just slightly more intense uterine contractions after than if I just have sex with my husband, probably because I actually stop and am just laying there so I feel it more. As far as I could research, as long as it's clean and you are green-lighted for sex, they're safe to use.

Could be dehydration.  I called my OB when I was having some cramping.  They said I should be drinking a gallon of water a day (128 oz).  I was getting about 60-70 oz before.  I've upped to at least 100 oz a day and haven't been having any more problems.
