HG mamas

Hi! I know we all go through a lot of hard stuff during our incredible journeys, but I'm wondering how many of you have experienced HG (hyperemesis gravidarum) in the past or now?
I had it in my last pregnancy, and it was terrible! I couldn't move, couldn't turn my head, couldn't speak, couldn't swallow without throwing up! And throwing up did little to nothing in relieving my nausea! And then there was the dehydration, the fainting, the dizziness, and the lack of nutrition, the constant trips to the hospital for IV fluids and nutrition. I basically couldn't function. It lasted me the entire pregnancy although it did ease up a little in my last trimester.
This time around,I thought I didn't seem as nauseous: I only threw up once or twice a day, even though I did spend a lot of time in bed nauseous. However, over the last few days,I am finding a lot of HG symptoms returning. My nausea is increasing and I haven't been able to keep anything down. I am only 7+3 but I have lost 7 pounds in the last week and a half. I'm so scared this is happening again! My first appt is on Friday...
Sorry this post was so long, but I desperately would like to connect to those of you who can relate!
Any other experiences/vents? Anyone else going through this terrible thing called HG?

Re: HG mamas

  • I did not have HG, but did lose over 10% of my weight due to sickness last time. It was rough for 28 weeks. I cannot imagine having it worse. Even with my experience, it almost felt traumatic to be getting so sick and remembering that it could continue for months witout relief. I was so nervous this time. I had three really difficult weeks. I was losing 4 lbs a week for those three weeks and became super discouraged when I started puking the Pheneregan. Thankfull, I did start feeling some relief at 10 weeks. Hoping a little relief is just around the corner for you.

  • Thanks, that sounds really horrible! I haven't been to the Dr yet and therefore haven't been diagnosed this time around, and I'm hoping it's not HG but unfortunately, all signs and symptoms are pointing that way :(
  • I have ha it each time I was pregnant, although it wasn't as severe as you described your symptoms. Mine was manageable with the Zofran pump. I had it the entire nine months and my last pregnancy was much better since the FDA approved. Diclegis. My first apt is next Thursday, but the nurse called me and told me to go ahead and start taking my Dclegis as soon as I felt nauseous. which I started feeling sick around 5 weeks almost 6. Which is right on schedule!!! It has almost completely taken away all my HG symptoms. I don't know what to do with myself and it feels like something is wrong because I am not as sick as I normally am while being pregnant. I am just hoping for healthy baby and maybe, just maybe it might be a boy this time since my symptoms are different than I am used too? but who am I kidding its probably only because I started taking my meds way earlier than the previous pregnancies?
  • @jadkins2 that sounds amazing! I should have done that :) diclegis and zofran didn't help me last time, but this time around may be different! I'll wait till Friday to speak to my Dr! Maybe you will have a boy! I was originally thinking that this pregnancy was easier do I thought it would be a girl (I have one son) but now that all my symptoms are returning, maybe it will be another boy?
  • I had it before and lost 14 lbs in a little over a month (more than 10% of my body weight). I have been sick this time too, but medication seems to be working better this time. Last time I was vomiting 10x a day on Zofran and Diclectin (which is the same as Diclegis) and this time it's been 1-4x a day. One time I skipped one pill to see if it was really working. I threw up 7x in just one evening, so I guess it's working better than I thought.
Right now I am on the max dosage of diclectin and last Friday added Gravol on top of that per my dr. It seems to be helping because the other day I went a whole day with no vomiting for the first time since like 5 weeks.
I am 10 weeks now and in the past it has pretty much disappeared around 20 weeks so I feel like I'm at the halfway point even though I guess I'm only 1/3 of the way through it since I started around 5 weeks.

  • I had HG with my daughter. I was so sick the entire pregnancy and had a hard time even trying to brush my teeth without getting sick. I couldn't handle any smells and got sick from the thought of food. This pregnancy I was still diagnosed with HG but I don't feel as bad as I did with my daughter. Some days are rough but I do have some decent days.
  • Thanks everyone for your support, experiences, and feedback. I also feel like this time might be a little better, but not good enough :( I'm hoping that the meds will help!
  • Anyone start to get some relief only for it to get much worse? I was so hopeful bc I had like 3-4 decent days and now I can hardly eat anything and even the thought of food makes me hurl.
  • No relief yet. My medication was working but ran out of samples and found out it was going to be 700 a month for dicelgis. So I opted to try the unisom and b6 recommendation. Which helps but it's not as good. I am only nine weeks and some days and I remember with my last two I didn't feel any relief until well after 20 weeks. Aghh. Trying to be positive but I just feel awful all day long. My poor husband and kids.
  • Nope, no relief yet :(my work is being extremely accommodating and allowing me to work from home. The best thing to do is to get an iv at home. You can lay on your own bed and get rehydrated (didn't have this option last pregnancy, we were out of the country)
