I have a dumb concern/question. I've always had huge boobs (cup size G) and they're only getting bigger and I'm secretly afraid my boobs are gonna smother my baby (I'm really embarrassed to have just written that lol). How did you "well-endowed" STM+ fare?
I am always so jealous of my friends who had average size or small boobs because they BFed while babywearing and on the go and the baby just latched on....
as a fellow gigantic boob lady, I am here to tell you that BFing while babywearing is a pipe dream for us. Lol And yes, smothering is a real concern, and Bfing for large chested moms takes practice. I squish my boob as close to the nipple/areola as possible and shove it into baby's mouth, and I have to hold my boob like that the whole time baby is BFing. I can never do it hands-free. It gave me carpel tunnel, no joke. It gets easier when baby is a bit bigger.
Edit to add: I had to make sure that my boob was squished enough so baby nose is not obstructed. I had to watch as the baby was BFing the whole time to make sure he could breathe.
The football hold is the easiest when baby is a newborn. They are so itty and your boob will look GIGANTIC next to their head. I remember telling the nurse there was no way it would work because my boob was literally bigger than my baby's head! But it can work...it just takes some practice. Cradle hold is better when baby is 3-4+ months. Football hold is the go-to at first.
I love this thread! My dumb question is when did your belly "pop" when you were a ftm? I'm 15 weeks tomorrow and just kind of look the same but a bit like I drank a large glass of water? I have a long torso and am tall-ish, but it's starting to freak me out.
@akbride09 My department chair and his wife have 4 sons. 10, 6, 5 and and infant. All 4 share a room, and they LOVE it. They then have a playroom, a guest room, and a master. I don't understand, but they swear it works for them, and it's a non-issue. I even asked about the baby sleeping through the night, and they said the older boys just got over it, and learned to ignore it.
@manillabar@leilac It's a legit fear but it is manageable. It took me longer to be able to babywear and nurse, but we got there eventually. The main danger is side-lying nursing. It's dangerous to do while you're sleepy, so make sure you're alert.
There's also a possibility that if they grow enough with pregnancy that you could be elligible for a medical reduction. I was almost there with my last pregnancy; when I was nursing, I couldn't lie on my back because my breasts were heavy enough when engorged that I had trouble breathing. My OB said a medical reduction can interfere with future nursing, so he recommended waiting until I was done having kids before going down that road.
@leilac I'm glad I'm not the only one with that concern! Honestly I thought I was being crazy.
Thanks @ljd2010 and @supermom83 for your advice! What made me finally decide to ask my question is that we went out with a couple of H's friends last night and his friend's wife was at the table breastfeeding their son under one of those covers and she was eating at the same time like it was no big deal and I felt like I probably couldn't do the same lol. It seems that I was right on that end but I'm glad it's still doable. Just probably a two-handed job.
edited to add: @xath I was actually kind of thinking about a reduction prior to getting pregnant but I was also afraid of the effects on breastfeeding. I'm encouraged though that you were eventually able to babywear and feed!

We have twins and had bases in each car when they were infants, but one car seat each. Now, we have one car seat for each kid and switch them when needed. My MIL offered to buy us 2 more car seats, but we timed it and with the latch system it takes less than five min to swap them from one car to another.
Now or that we need to fit three car seats, we will need to trade my husband's Outback in for a used minivan (and FX that three seats fit in my Grand Cherokee). Any Rant/Raves out there for 2006-2011 minivans .... Toyota v. Dodge v. Chrysler?
In regards to bumps and popping, what's the difference between the half bloat/half baby I've got going on now and a true honest to god bump. I can't suck my stomach back all the way, and when I lay down it doesn't flatten, but idk, is it a real bump? It's been like this since about 11.5 weeks, growing slowly the whole time. FTM, and I'm so confused.

@kerils I'd say if you can't suck it in anymore and it's a change from what your body looked like pre-pregnancy then it's a bump, no matter how early. It's definitely not baby, maybe it's a shifted internal organ for goodness sake lol, but it's due to pregnancy and it's a natural change the body is doing therefore it's a pregnancy bump. Nobody is claiming it's all baby, it's a body change. I hate all the policing that goes around making fun of women when they say they have a bump. You're pregnant, your body is changing, I personally take any change in my body as the start of the bump. I always side-eye all the bump police ladies who make fun of people for claiming to have a bump or policing the "right" time to start claiming to have a bump. Whatever. Different bodies carry weight differently and we all accept that, so why all the sudden all the policing about how we carry our pregnancies and body changes? Embrace the change and call it a bump and don't let anybody make you feel silly for enjoying this amazing body change.
My fat magically morphs into a bump when I'm pregnant because I'm magical like that
@supermom83 I should have been clearer, I'll be 14 weeks on Wednesday, so it's a least a little baby. I think it's what my MIL said, she made it out like there was some magical difference between a bloated/fatter belly and a "true bump" and I've just been confused ever since and waiting for some kind of noticeable difference between the two. Thanks, you made me feel better about it.

@kerils@supermom83 I'd been wondering about this. I'm also 14 weeks and starting to get a belly but the belly is much higher than the baby (which is sitting just above my pubic bone) so my bump is just plump. I like the suggestion that it's all baby related and I wouldn't have the plump without the bump.
Ok my dumb question... do most doctors do an NT scan or is it more for higher risk patients? I see so many posts and this is baby 3 and none of my OBs have ever talked to me about one
Ok my dumb question... do most doctors do an NT scan or is it more for higher risk patients? I see so many posts and this is baby 3 and none of my OBs have ever talked to me about one
I think most docs give you the option but it's only considered medically necessary if you are considered high risk for any reason. I haven't had it for either of my pregnancies.
Also just want to say that I don't think any of these questions are dumb! A mom can ask me pretty much anything except "is this my mucus plug" and id happily answer, lol.
@megandchase I'm in canada so it's probably a bit different but the NT scan here is treated as one of the standard scans. You can decline it if you choose but it's been offered to everyone I know. In contrast NIPT blood tests aren't brought up at all while I see lots of low risk ladies on TB having the option.
@megandchase I've had both NIPT and NT testing and, honestly, I think they just give it to me because my insurance will pay for it. But if it wouldn't, I doubt they'd offer or I'd ask, since I'm fairly low-risk.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
@theweevee as a FTM I was obsessed with my lack of a bump! I just got thicker and thicker and put on weight in my hips and butt because you know that's where the baby goes. I popped at 6 months. It totally depends on the shape of your body. For some, the true baby bump normally refers to when the fundal height is in the belly area. I attached a picture - not sure if you've already seen these.
Another one (and this truly feels dumb): does a baby HAVE to have a bassinet or can they go right to a crib? We're planning on keeping little dude in our room for at least the first six months, but were thinking we'd just get the crib in there.
TTC #1: 4/16 BFP #1: 5/16 MMC at 8 weeks: 6/16 BFP #2: 10/16 Sweet baby boy arrived 7/7/17!
@leilac We never used a bassinet. I had him in a rock 'n play for a hot minute, but I couldn't sleep with him in the room. I had DS in a crib by the second/third week. I know plenty of people who don't use a bassinet. I think it depends on the layout of your house more than anything else. Plus, some babies don't get up as often as others. DS was up 3 times a night at first, but he was in the room next door. I plan to do the same with this child, but I want to get a glider instead of an armchair for the neck support during night feedings.
ETA if the crib fits in your room, then I wouldn't get extra furniture.
@leilac I'd skip the bassinet if you can fit the crib. My first sleep in the back n play for a month but only because we were in the process of moving out of state and didn't set up any furniture until we moved. The day we moved into our new place I made dh set up the crib and he went in there. I just don't sleep well with my kids in my room every single noise wakes me. LO 2 slept in the pack n play for about a week until I felt well enough after my csection to get up and move around. My kids also slept sooo much better in their cribs!
Another one (and this truly feels dumb): does a baby HAVE to have a bassinet or can they go right to a crib? We're planning on keeping little dude in our room for at least the first six months, but were thinking we'd just get the crib in there.
I think it depends on i) the amount of space you have and ii) the baby you get. Some babies don't feel safe in the big expanse of a crib (which is why some moms like crib bumpers and the like - not recommended by the AAP of course) and so may not be easily consoled there. In our case, we had a third reason - we were going to have in home childcare and I didn't want the nanny in and out of our room, so the crib went in the nursery and the bassinet in our room.
@leilac you could totally skip the bassinet. Ds really liked the rock n play in the very early days bc it was cozy like he was being held. The first couple nights dh and I had to take turns holding him because he wanted to be held while sleeping.
@leilac we did a pack n play with both kids in our room until the night nursing stopped which was at about 3 months then they both went into their own room and the crib.

I felt this way with #1 because I wanted everyone to see I was pregnant but those darn scrubs hid it SO well! With this one, I'm happy to have my scrubs hide it because I wasn't quite ready for the world to know until recently!
@leilac I think you can totally skip it. If you can fit a crib, there is no need! We got rid of ours because DS slept in it only a small handful of times. This time around, I will probably cram the crib in our room until I'm ready to transition to their own room.
I'm unsure if I should get a double stroller. DD2 will be a little over 3 when this babe arrives, however, she's a runner, so she still sits in a cart/stroller. I will baby wear some of the time, but not all the time. So would I need a double stroller? Especially for zoo trips?

@kghusker1003 for the zoo we just rent one of the wagons that they have and it has made the zoo trip more enjoyable for the kids I think. We've been to about 3 different zoos in different states and they've all had wagons available.

My boys are about that far apart. I got a stand attachment for the back of our stroller so DS1 could ride along. But most of the time, I'd baby-wear one and one would be in the stroller. When the big one was walking, I'd put the little one in the stroller to give my body a break.

My DS will also be 3 and I don't plan to get a double stroller. I rarely use the stroller now because he doesn't like to sit in it. For zoo trips we bring the wagon. I'll probably wear the baby, then pull DS and the diaper bag in the wagon. I might bring the stroller when baby is in the stage where don't need. The infant seat, but he/she can't sit in the wagon, so I would have the option of putting the baby down in the stroller if DS wants to walk.
@kghusker1003 okay yeah then I definitely have no good advice here lol, our zoo is not usually super busy so we are always able to get wagons. I never got a double stroller because we didn't need one but I definitely think it'd be worth the investment if you planned to use it a lot. I personally wouldn't baby wear at the zoo or other outside activities during the summer because I just think it'd be too hot.

I didn't pop until 32 weeks as a FTM, as a STM I popped about 18 weeks. I got married during my first pregnancy at 24 weeks and no bump, I even ha my dress altered for a 2 incheck growth and didn't need it.
Add me to the boobzilla group as well. Pre pregnancy I'm a 32g, I try to wait as long as possible before I break out my maternity/nursing bras bc they have NO supoort. But I love the ones I have. I bought Hot Milk by Motherhood on Zulily in my regular size in them (32g) and an extender if I needed it.
I have boobzillas too (32H pre-pregnancy, I don't want to know nor do I intend to find out now), and I didn't even think about suffocating my own baby with them. Eek.

@leilac we used a pack'n'play in our room but we needed to own one anyway so it wasn't an extra piece of gear. If you don't plan to need a pack'n'play then give the crib a try. If baby seems inconsolable in the crib it could be that it's too big and scary but no harm in trying. I personally think actual bassinets are silly because they are used for such a short time.
We loved the Pack n Play for our son's first year. Used the bassinet on top until he rolled over, then bought a PnP mattress and used it as his bed til he was ~14 months. We travel a lot, and this option also helped us to give him a consistent bed, in addition to it being a convenient and affordable alternative to a bassinet.
The AAP recommends baby sleep in your room for the first six months, minimum - ideally a year.
(We didn't do that with our first (he moved at ~4 months, but I usually got into the bed in his room a little after midnight anyway). We plan to room share longer this time due to the recommendations and also because the kids will share a room, and I don't want baby waking the toddler.)
Ok my dumb question... do most doctors do an NT scan or is it more for higher risk patients? I see so many posts and this is baby 3 and none of my OBs have ever talked to me about one
I just read that it's considered standard of care to offer the screening to all women, regardless of risk factors, so that they may make the choice on their own. My NT scan screening came back abnormal, so I've spent the last 48 hours reading everything humanly possible about NT scans, screenings, risks, ect.
My OB offered it to me for this pg, and I was like 'do you think I'm high risk? should I?' and he said 'no, you aren't high risk, but it's my job to give you all your options and answer all your questions.'

Here's my dumb question: when should I stop sleeping on my stomach/back? The past few nights I've been tossing and turning, or wake up on my stomach/back and then get worried that I was in that position for too long or something. I am 14w4d so I don't have much of a bump yet and I know baby is very protected in there. But I still get worried.

My OB offered it to me for this pg, and I was like 'do you think I'm high risk? should I?' and he said 'no, you aren't high risk, but it's my job to give you all your options and answer all your questions.'
