Solids??

Re: Solids??

  • My pediatrician also said to start water in a training sippy cup. Although I think he recommended it because Abby is a big baby (went in for a fever last Monday and she was 20 pounds hahaha)

  • Well I went from having a once a day pooper to three or four little turds.  It only started when we began doing puréed food 3x a day. (We are only doing purée to get him used to different flavors since we prefer BLW). Is this normal for when you start doing more solids?  Also, Preston is not a fan of green beans.  He made some crazy faces and over 2 days would only eat 2oz.  And I had to trick him a bit by giving him bites of pear then swapped out for the green beans.  He didn't like the surprise. Lol but I think he got more used to it.  I hope he like peas better.
Charlotte is on soy formula and I have to give her about 2 oz of prunes everyday to keep her regular. You could try that, but I suggest doing it in the morning so he doesn't poop during the night. just be prepared for a big poop the day after you induce prunes. Charlotte always has a big one that's gross if I miss a day of prunes and then it gets back to a more consistent less terrifying poop.
Oh his poop as far as texture is fine.  By nuggets I mean they are smaller but more frequent.  It's kinda the texture of soft serve. Lol that's the only way I discribe it now since he pooped in my hand the other day. Hahahaha
Oh my gosh that's hilarious I'm not sure I'll be able to eat any frozen yougurt for a while now!
  • So I've come to the conclusion that Preston prefers to feed himself and hates the jarred food.  The only thing he was willing to eat more than a few bites of was pears.  He spat out the peas and peaches.  Not surprised though, I had some and thought "these are horrible peaches" lol. But the whole point of us trying the purée was to make sure he's not allergic to anything.  So far he hasn't shown the least bit of sensitivity.  Once these jars are done I think I'm just gonna go full ham with BLW.  When he's older I'll get some pouches for in the go but he's much happier feeding himself.

Ugh, that would be my LO. He is sooo constipated, but it doesn't seem to bug him. We have to give him prune juice twice a day but it's not helping much.

    They daycare workers also strongly advised us against the fruits as well because all 8 infants there are refusing their veggies and only want fruit. ;_;

I don't blame them.  I will take a spoonful of the veggie baby food every now and then and it's so gross.  Like, I love peas, but this purée made me gag.
  • Is anyone giving their LO water? My ped suggested 1-2oz 3x/day since she is sick (to thin the mucus). Not sure how I feel about it though.
Yes but very little. We give him about 1/2 inch in a sippy cup so he can practice "holding it" throughout the day. Formula is still his primary liquid and he eats tons of baby food. Lol.

Savannah hates baby food! I'm trying more BLW now because she can do it more herself plus it seems more appetizing!

She gets 3 4oz bottles at daycare and nurses 5x/day so definitely BM is her primary fluid.

I'm not sure if I want to give her water in a supply cup or just a little extra BM, though.

  • Bennett is still only drinking BM right now, and when he takes a bottle, he has no interest in trying to hold it himself. I haven't even though about using a sippy cup! I didn't know that was even a thing this early!  I feel like he would just bang it on his tray and not know what to do with it.
  • Charlotte loves her sippy cup but she just plays with it for the most part and doesn't actually get a lot of water. I think it's more about practice holding and feeding themselves. The nice thing about water is it doesn't go bad, you can't leave formula or BM in a cup all day.
  • Has anyone tried the Baby Bullet? We got one for a shower gift and thinking of pureeing a zucchini since Gerber doesn't make those. we pureed some frozen peas (steamed) and they taste sooooo good compared to Gerber.
  • We have the baby bullet and it's SO much better than the magic bullet or our regular blender for baby food.  It really purees the food and I love that you can slip the spatula in the middle to push chunks down.  It's also nice to add in liquid without stopping and taking the whole lid off.  We are only making our own baby food so it was essential for us.  We've done bananas, pears, apples, sweet potatoes and tonight butternut squash in the baby bullet and they've all came out perfect!

  • So we do purée for lunch and I'm just wondering how many oz to feed him.  When he feeds himself, we just add food till he stops trying to eat. But with purée I have to spoon feed him and I swear he'd eat the whole 4oz jar if I let him.  We do a 3ish hour schedule with BF then I give solids for breakfast lunch and dinner. It lands about 1.5-2 hours after he breastfeeds.  Do I just keep going till he says no more?
  • Lillyana will eat anywhere from 2-4 oz in one sitting of puree along with 2 tablespoons of oatmeal.  She is only getting solids at dinner at this point.  She tells us when she's done.

  • Levi is taking 6 6oz bottles a day (probably about to go to 7-8oz) and eats 2oz of baby food once a day.  I was actually coming on here to see how many times a day everyone is offering solids.  So far he has had squash, apples, peas, pears and sweet potatoes. So far I've never offered more than one food per sitting. I guess I'm still so naive about how this all works, I just keep on with one thing for a week, then move to something new the next week. I'm interested is reading what you all are doing.
  • Charlotte just moved up to 2-3 meals a day, at breakfast I usually just give her a bit of what we are having and do puréed at lunch and dinner. I'll also offer her something not puréed with her other meals since she really likes feeding herself. She's pretty good at picking things up and putting them in her mouth. She just started eating puffs and I'm going to experiment baking her some things. She's definitely moving along faster then my boys did  and it makes me sad she's growing up so fast. I'm trying to pace her but when she sees her brothers eating she wants to join in on the eating. She will also flat out refuse a bottle if she wants solids and then after a little solids she'll take the bottle. I always offer her more till she stops opening her mouth or she'll turn her head when I ask if she wants more.
  • Ethan eats solids for all 3 meals (some quinoa cereal and a small jar of baby food for each meal) and takes 6-8 ounce bottles during the day. He doesn't have a bottle in the middle of the night anymore (been about a week and a half since he started this).
  • Madelyn drinks 5 5-oz bottles/day (or nurses 5x/day), has 2oz of cereal at breakfast and 2-3oz of a puree at dinner.  So far we've done butternut squash and turnips.  Both times she was unsure the first time she tasted it, and really into it by the second day.  She will bang her hands on the placemat and grab our hands and pull them if we're feeding her too slowly.

  • I feed Calvin solids three meals a day- he sits down and has breakfast, lunch, and dinner with me/us. He gets about 2 tbsp of cereal at breakfast, 1-2 tbsp of veggies at lunch, and about 2 tbsp at dinner. So far we've done avocado (LOVES), green beans (doesn't love), sweet potatoes (FAIL), carrots (WIN), and white potatoes (good). I want to get through some more veggies before we go into fruit-land. Calvin also still breastfeeds every 2-3 hours during the day and multiple times at night (FML).

We also do breakfast, lunch and dinner.  He looooves his fruit in purée form but not veggies.  However, I let him feed himself, he'll eat any veggies I give him.  He also loves eggs in the morning and that's easy for me cause I I eat eggs every morning too so I just make an extra egg.
  • I'm not feeding Jackie nearly that much. I usually do one meal of solids, usually after her first nap and it's maybe 2.5 oz at the most. Mostly we're just sampling new foods, but I'm wondering if giving her an actual meal before bed would help her sleep longer. Lately it's been 5 hours stretches at most, but more often 3-4 hours. Jackie is 5 1/2 months.

We've been doing a lot of orange foods too. My mom said I liked carrots so much I started to turn yellow, so I've been trying to add some greens too.

That's too funny/crazy, I'll definitely need to add some other coor in then!!

I'm using the Infantino Squeeze Station but it only came with 10 storage caps. I can't find more on Amazon or the Infantino website. Do they even sell more separately? I wanted to make a bunch of food today to keep in the freezer but I'm out of caps!

Update: I'm an idiot. I bought two boxes of pouches and each box comes with caps.

I have this station too!  Although I don't like that the bags are not reusable and it doesn't seem like the "plunger" gets ALL the food out each time. Boo.

I noticed that too and if I left everything as is for a couple of mins after plunging, some stuff seems to drip into the pouch. Not always tho. I wish the bags were reusable as well, they're not cheap! I thought I saw reusable ones on Amazon but I didn't look closely so I'm not sure if they are compatible.
  • Savannah really hasn't been feeling baby food, maybe it's the consistency? But she tried avocado yesterday and loved it!! She also really seems to like water in a sippycup! We're doing about 1-2oz a day

Yes! We got a "bapron" for Christmas and it's like a baby craft smock. Ties in the back and worked great when she was eating blackberries.

We've been using the Aden & Anais burp cloths since they can also snap around Damien's neck. They cover all over!

  • Thank you @meggyme and @vintagevix2016! And thanks for the visual, Damien is too cute!
  • We bought some longer plastic bibs with a slot at the bottom to catch drips/falling food. It's nice to be able to just wipe them off instead of staining our cloth bibs. Haha.
  • Here is what I got from the pediatrician at his 4 month visit back in November.  I haven't introduced water yet.  A little edit from my previous post, Levi is still eating 6-6oz bottles formula and eats 2.5oz puree twice daily (I spoon feed him) Usually a fruit in AM and veg in PM.  What sippy cups are you all using?

I purchased a few of the dr. Browns sippy cups. We use the dr. Browns bottles so we just stuck with that. It has handles that you can put on or off. And they don't leak which is nice.
  • Savannah is barely into solids and hates using a spoon. Anyone else? We have tried oatmeal, pears, apples, bananas, prunes, avocado, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes and orzo. She likes sucking on veggie sticks and teething wafers. She also likes sipping water. She is still a bottle/boob monster so I'm not concerned about weight or nutrition, but really want to get her eating!

Anyone have any advice to get her interested in food?

  • @laurenm2123 Damien had no interest in solids when we first tried to introduce them in November. He will eat them now but only if they are puréed. I tried giving him super soft pieces and he hated it. When we dome across something he doesn't like, I try again periodically and then I combine it with something he does like, while still letting him taste it by itslef periodically to see if he will tolerate it.

Finger foods like banana, mushy green beans, avocado were things my daughters liked in the beginning

Have you tried the mesh feeders? I put frozen banana puree cubes in them and Calvin loves to suck on them. Might be something to try.
