Weight

Thought we could post weight related questions or comments here. I started this pregnancy about 20lbs overweight, maybe more. That combined with my hiatal hernia and terrible heartburn are keeping me from gaining too much this time around. Right now I'm down 7lbs after and original 10lb loss. From what I've read I should be good if I make it to 20 and gain roughly a lb a week from there. Hope I can do it. I'm sure going to try.

Hows everyone else doing? Exercising? I have been walking but really need to start getting back into daily exercise outside of walks.

Re: Weight

  • I'm glad you brought this up! I know everyone's weight gain goals are a bit different, but is there an amount that is normal or should be gained by a certain point? I just started exercising again a few weeks ago which is good.

@nda_roxybabe it all depends on your starting weight situation. For me I should gain no more than 25 according to my OB. previous pregnancies at the same starting weight I gained 50 and it was no fun in many ways. I would talk to your doc about your specific situation.

  • Thanks! They told me 20-25lbs and to try to OVER gain rather than under (I am thin to begin with), but I also don't want to pack on weight too quickly. I'm going to ask her if I'm tracking okay so far at my next appt.

This is pretty new territory for me. I've been a consistent weight my entire adult life, even as my body shape has changed a bit (muscle turning to fat and such as I've approached 30). However, gaining weight feels very natural right now. I'm up about 11 lbs. Based on my bmi and the paperwork they gave me, I should gain 25-30 lbs. On average, that would be 5 lbs in the first trimester and 1 lb a week after that. If I were in that track, I'd be 7 lbs right now. However, the first nurse I met with said not to worry too much about it and that some people gain quickly in the beginning and then slow down. For me, eating was the only thing that kept my nausea at bay in the first tri, so I wasn't remotely concerned about gaining. Now, I feel like I've finally stabilized a bit in terms of being able to eat when I want to and am hungry, instead of every 2 hours. I'm trying to just listen to my body and continue to eat the same types of foods as usual. However, I do want to stay conscious of my weight during this pregnancy. I don't feel like I necessarily need to get back to my pre-baby body, but I would like to stay healthy and not get to a point where losing some of the pregnancy weight is too difficult. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I don't usually exercise, partly because I've always had active jobs that keep me on my feet and moving. So, if I need to get my butt in gear at some point, that may be a difficult transition for me. Wow, that was a novel, sorry.

Edited: I double checked my sheet and should gain 25-30. I originally said 20-25.
  • ...For me, eating was the only thing that kept my nausea at bay in the first tri, so I wasn't remotely concerned about gaining. This describes me. I had hoped to be "better" in terms of weight gain this time than last, but ended up having to eat a LOT in first tri to deal with the nausea. Now I'm finding myself a bit less hungry, and I can deal with eating less. Granted, I also started some unhealthy eating habits (i.e. mostly carbs!) during that nausea time so my goal is over the next 5 months to try to ease into more healthy foods. Though I don't want things to get out of hand this pregnancy as they did with the last one (I ended up with stretch marks everywhere, like my thighs!), I also know that in the past I have always been able to eventually lose weight when needed. So I'm not going to sweat it too much, either. I also know it's totally unrealistic for me to expect to fit in much exercise given that I have two kids and work full-time (and will need to work right up until birth). So I don't have super high hopes, but I want to try to stay smart at the same time.

  • I've put on an unreasonable amount of weight since we got married 2.5 years ago - about 35lbs. So far, I'm down about 17 pounds, which is weird for me. I don't feel any thinner although I can tell somewhat in my face. My Dr is not in the least concerned and I know it will come back. Just this week, I feel like my appetite is improving.

With my doctors blessing I'd really like to minimize my gain during this pregnancy so I'm not too far behind where I started in regards to weight loss after birth. If I could keep my net down to a 5-10 lb gain I'd be thrilled. I haven't been very careful at all, as only carbs ever sound good. But I need to get on track with healthy foods and snacks before I get back in my old (weight gaining) habits!
  • I kept pretty close to my goal of only gaining 35lbs last pregnancy. I started this pregnancy down 12lbs from my prior pre-pregnancy weight (woot!!) and my goal is the same to gain 35 or less lbs this time. I just bought a workout dvd and have been trying to get myself to do it every few days. I am not one to workout and felt like I did not have the stamina needed for birth last time, so I hope to do better this go around. As a super nerd, I am in love with excel spreadsheets and graphs, so using the data obtained from the website calculator below I track my progress weekly. Like others have gained a bit more in the 1st tri then I would have liked, but it hasn't slowed me from polishing off this pint of ben and jerry's tonight. The graph just gives me an idea if I am spiraling out of control and need to put down the snacks for an evening.

@Louise_Belcher this is such a great resource! And it makes me feel a lot better about the weight I've gained. I am not 100% sure my starting weight this pregnancy, but like others I've been worried about eating all the carbs to feel better during the first tri. I think the weight gain expectations on this site are a bit more realistic than what I've seen other places.
  • In the beginning when all you can stomach is carbs it's hard not to gain! I'm within a normal BMI so 25-35 lbs is what I'm expecting. I put on 5lbs pretty quickly but I've seemed to level out and haven't gained anymore in the last two weeks.
With DD1 I gained 34lbs and with DD2 I gained 26lbs. DD2 was actually a bigger baby and born 2 days later than her sister. I know being more active with DD2 was a big contributing factor in the less weight gain as I craved the same food and had almost identical pregnancies. I'm hoping for the same lower outcome this time around!

  • I'm also in the should gain 25-35 range. I weighed myself this morning and put on 6 pounds, which sounds about right for 14 weeks. The problem is I can't get motivated to work out AT ALL. In the spring, summer, and fall, I get out and hike pretty frequently, and I used to rock climb before getting pregnant. Rock climbing is out, and it's starting to feel like winter... I always have trouble motivating myself in the winter but this is worse than normal. It's not even that cold yet so I really could still be getting outside. I'm considering getting a gym membership but then I'll just be fighting with myself to go. Maybe I should get back into yoga.

  • With DD I gained over 50lbs.  That and her being 10 days late, she ended up being 8lbs 15oz and I ended up with an c-section after 12 hours of labor and her never dropping.  My goal is to gain less than 30 this time.  I'll be 15 weeks on Friday with a weight gain of 6lbs so far

I started at a good, healthy weight and have continued to exercise but I've put on 16 lbs and I'm just 15 weeks. I'm not thrilled about it but I'm gaining less than I did last time at this rate. edited. really wanted to put in gif here but I am apparently gif challenged.
  • I was also told 25-35 pounds would be ok for this pregnancy. I am an average weight and have been most of my life. I gained 18 pounds with DS1 and was hoping to gain a similar amount this time.

I am a very active person and crossfit 4-5 days a week. I am not competing now but I certainly try to keep my fitness goals while modifying as it becomes necessary. I am down one pound so far at 15 weeks. I don't have much of an appetite and I am chasing around a 15 month old so I think that's why I haven't gained yet. I have another appointment on 12/12 so we will see how the weight gain is progressing at that point.

For me, the goal is to just stay active and hopefully the recovery won't be difficult! It really helped me last time! Good luck to all in their goals with this pregnancy!
  • I started at 10lbs more than when I got pregnant with DD so its a bit strange knowing I will eventually see the highest number I've seen on the scale. So far at 16 weeks I've put on about 4 to 5 lbs but will probably do 25-30 total by the end. I haven't been exercising since I fell completely out of habit with all that fatigue, so DH has been encouraging me to go on more walks as a family. Better than nothing? ;) Like most PPS here I could do with cutting some of the extra carbs out and having a more balanced diet again.

  • My goal for this pregnancy (and last pregnancy) is 25-30 pounds. With DD I gained 27 pounds. I'm hoping to not go over my 30 pound goal. As far as exercise I walk for about 30 mins 1-2x a week.

  • Glad you guys found it helpful! There is another variation of the calculator below. They differ in how they expect you to gain weight. The first one I shared was higher more consistent weight gain 16 weeks until the end while this one has the highest weight gain between 20-28 weeks and then returns to about 1lb a week.  Everyone is different and will gain at different times, so one of the calculators may be more inline with you than the other. Happy gaining everyone!

  • Before I got pregnant with my son in February of 2015, I was a long distance runner and had been at a healthy weight for a while. I'm not comfortable running while pregnant, so I switched to swimming, yoga, and pure barre. I ended up gaining about 30 pounds with him. When I got pregnant this time, I was 6 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight, so not too terrible. As of my appointment on 11/21, I'm up 4 pounds.

Last pregnancy, I was super careful about what I ate (not for weight purposes, but just general health). This time, with a baby to chase after....I have not been as good. We cook less, and end up doing take out more often than not. I've also been giving in to my cravings much more :/ While I have been trying to swim and keep up exercising, it's been hard to fit in the schedule with the little guy. Luckily, he is a giant beast baby and it's quite a work out just carrying him around...haha.

  • Would anyone be interested in a thread to discuss what everyone has been eating? I've been struggling to get enough protein and leafy greens and blah blah and would love some meal and snack suggestions.

  • At 14 weeks I haven't gained anything, and I'm starting to get a little worried about it! The doctor did give me a goal of 15-35 lbs for weight gain because of my BMI is right on the normal/overweight line. So maybe I have nothing to worry about since I would like to stay on the smaller end of that scale. I have been craving insane amounts of fruit so normally my snack is an apple (or whatever fruit I have chosen for the week). I also work out about 3 days a week, even though my goal is 4 days a week.
  • @nda_roxybabe I would love that idea.  Eating was a HUGE struggle for me first tri because I had no motivation to cook, but it is getting better now.  One tip that helps me a lot is I make a green smoothie every morning.  I put in a banana, an apple, half a cucumber, some lemon juice, and a bunch of spinach.  The banana and apple cover up the taste of the cucumber and spinach but it is seriously the only way I'm getting enough leafy greens right now.

I prep everything on Sunday by cutting up 4 apples and two cucumbers and putting them in tupperware so I only have to throw everything in in the morning.
  • @absbubbs I wouldn't worry about it.  I found with my last pregnancy that my body gained exactly what it needed to.  As long as you're eating healthy I am sure you are fine at this point.
  • @RainyDays86 I used to do green smoothies every morning, I'd prep Sunday and then just throw in the blender every morning. However, I've only done that a handful of times since being pg. I really need to start up again as that would help with my fruits and veggies and I can do my protein powder for some extra protein.

  • @nda_roxybabe - I love that idea! I did smoothies everyday during the 1st tri last pregnancy, to make sure I ate some veggies and fruits, since nothing sounded appealing. This pregnancy = mostly carbs. Oops.

  • I'm still down 3 or 4lbs at 15 weeks. I know it's ok to have gained by this point but mentally I'm not ok with it. I figure things will start to happen on their own in the next few weeks but it's really hard.

Doctor said I could gain 20 or so and I countered with 10. We will see how it goes.

  • well, I still had the last 15 pounds to loose from having my DD. I gained around 50 with her, tons of it was water though (I was ridiculously swollen) and she was big. So far with these two, I've gained 12 and am 16 weeks. I'm thinking this is ok? I don't really know, but I know I haven't been the least bit hungry so I don't feel like i've gone crazy with food. I don't know my goal weight, but figure I'll probably swell again. As long as the babies are healthy, i can loose it after if I end up gaining like crazy like I did with DD.

  • I have nothing to go off of as I am a FTM. But I've gained about five pounds so far and I'm at 14 weeks 4 days.  I try to stay active, working out 3x a week, but I'm not "really" watching what I eat.  I know I'll kick myself in the ass if I gain unnecessary weight, so I'll see where I'm at at the next appt.

  • I think where people run into trouble is the whole "eating for two" myth. Your not really eating for two, remember that the extra person is tiny in the beginning!
    • First trimester: You actually won't likely need any additional calories during your first trimester. Instead, you should focus on choosing nutritious foods that keep your energy up while supporting your baby's development.
    • Second trimester: Up your daily calorie intake by 300 to 350 calories per day — that's the equivalent of, say, two glasses of skim milk and a bowl of oatmeal (not the all-you-can-eat sundae bar you were envisioning).
    • Third trimester: You'll need about an extra 500 calories per day.
    • If you're carrying multiples: Add an additional 300 calories per day for each baby.

  • With my last baby I gained 47lbs. I exercised and didn't feel like I was a eating any more than before I was pregnant. Every time I stepped on the scale and saw the weight gain I was upset. It felt like it was out of my control. I've always been a thin person and I was shocked by how much I gained. After baby was born I lost all of the weight plus some extra. I didn't diet and did mostly long walks outside since it was the summer. I also breast Fed for 1 year. I started this pregnancy 10lbs less than my first and I'm trying not to focus so much on the scale. As long as I get some physical activity in a couple times a week and eat nutritious meals most days, im satisfied.

  • I gained 35 lbs exactly with DS and lost an extra 10 after he was born. With DD, I gained 47 lbs and went back to my pp weight before DS, which means I kept 10 lbs after DD's birth. At 18 weeks now, I've gained 14 lbs and expect I will gain between 30-35 lbs. So far my gain has been very close, but just a little bit slower than that with DS.

  • I gained just shy of 30 when I was pregnant with DS. I was back to my original weight within a few months, and then dropped an additional 10 (thank you, breastfeeding and new mommy brain that caused me to forget to eat). I'm 18 weeks today, and I've gained about 10 already (pretty much on track with my weight gain the first time). All I've wanted to eat is junk food, so it's not that surprising. Now that I don't feel like a complete sloth day in and day out, I'm hoping to get focused on eating better and slow it down!

On that note, I can't remember who mentioned FroYo on here the other day, but I want some!

With DD I gained over 60!  :s I got SPD with DD and I am already getting symptoms this time again. Plus I can't keep my heart rate down where Doctor is ok when I work out so that's a double whammy. I went from crossfit 3-4 times a week to a light walk if i'm lucky... oh and CARBS....

  • FTM here, so I'm not sure what's "normal" for me. I'm of a normal BMI, so that puts me in the 25-30lb range. I'm currently 17w4d, but have only gained 4lbs. (I was pumped to see I'd gone up a pound from last week! Never in my life have I actually been excited to see the number on the scale go up.) I felt guilty the entire first trimester for the bad eating habits and virtually no exercise. (Who had the energy to cook, or move, or even lift the remote!? Not this girl!) So I lived on fruit, cheese sticks, crackers, and ginger ale. My weight stayed exactly the same.

Now, in second trimester I've got energy (hooray!) and am definitely doing better with the cooking and eating scene, but I hurt my ankle on vacation and now have plantar fasciitis in my left foot...so exercise is my next big obstacle. Normally I'd walk, but that's out for at least a couple of weeks, and by then it will probably be too cold for me to realistically go outside much. We live in the country, in the Mid-West, so gym options are limited and my "walking trails" are all uneven gravel roads. And while part of me is thinking it's ok that I'm not exercising much now since my weight is staying pretty steady, I know that I'm going to need some endurance for the whole birthing a human being thing. Plus I want my baby to benefit from all the happy exercise endorphins. I do have a prenatal Yoga video that I should probably start incorporating, but does anyone have any good cardio/strength suggestions for gimpy over here?

  • I am normal BMI- The doctor recommended that I gain 25-30 pounds each pregnancy. DD #1 I gained exactly 25 the day I delivered at 41 weeks,  DD#2 I only gained 20.  This time around I feel like I am gaining weight like a champ. I have gained 6 at 15 weeks. I am hopeful to stay on the lower side of weight gain again. My doctor was never concerned that I wasn't gaining enough so I think a large majority of us are still okay to have very minimal weight gain at this time. Fortunately- both times I left the hospital 18 pounds lighter!
