@adirat It was me - and definitely not a problem to requote (from Expecting Better - for those who missed the original convo):
Charting: "In a study from the late 1990's, researchers followed a set of women trying not to get pregnant and evaluated how good various methods were at detecting ovulation. In this study, they were able to pinpoint the actual date of ovulation using ultrasound, so they knew the truth. The temperature-charting method as used by these women accurately identified the day of ovulation about 30 percent of the time. Another 30 percent of the time this method pointed to ovulation one day before it actually occurred.
The day before ovulation is also good for pregnancy sex. Putting this together: if you have sex on the date indicated by temperature charting, 60 percent of the time you would manage to time sex on one of the two most fertile days of the month."
Study reference: M. Guida et al., "Efficacy of Methods for Determining Ovulation in a Natural Family Planning Program," Fertility and Sterility 72, no. 5 (1999): 900-904.
OPKs: "In the same study that evaluated the temperature and mucus charting, urine-based ovulation tests put them to shame; these tests identified the day of ovulation 100 percent of the time. A study of the Clearblue fertility monitor specifically found that 23 percent of women who were randomly given access to this technology got pregnant in the two months of the study, versus only 15 percent who didn't have it."
Study reference: J. E. Robinson, M. Wakelin, and J. E. Ellis, "Increased Pregnancy Rate with Use of the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor," Fertility and Sterility 87, no. 2 (2007): 329-34.
@Sailing_Mama: Wait, so it's more likely than not that the day FF cross hairs on the chart is actually 1 day off (i.e., says its the 19th but it's actually the 20th)?
Ugh...just when I thought I was actually starting to understand my body and cycles...
Very tardy to this party! Today was madness at work and then had to entertain in-laws all evening. Finally got DH to sleep and ready to catch up with my bumpies. Bummed the posts are gone!! Looking forward to hearing from everyone tomorrow.

@baileygomez I was like- wait-what?!? As well so I logged onto my research account (thanks work!) and read the article. Here's my summary of the interesting bits:
They used ultrasound as the control, everyone had ultrasound daily. They marked O as the day before a corpus luteum showed up on ultrasound.(100% of days this occurred)
All participants used (clear plan brand) opks in the morning. These tests used "monoclonal antibodies directed versus LH bound to a colorimetric substance" and I have nooo idea what that means... (66% if time they measured this)
All participants gave saliva samples daily that were analyzed for two separate things related to fertility. (64-84%)
They all charted mucus and peak day was determined retrospectively as last day of high quality wet or stretchy mucus. (100%)
BBT was to be taken at same time daily after at least two hours of sleep. (100%)
So there were 40 participants and each did about 3-4 cycles. They were found via asking gyno about using natural family planning and gyno asking back if they would participate in a study.
Here's the interesting bit:
"Determination of mucus sensation and characteristics indicated ovulation the day after actual ovulation in 27.4% of cases. Finally, body temperature measurements indicated ovulation the day before ultrasonographically detected ovulation in 32% of cases."
The problem is there are lotsa problems with this research article.
1. They don't say how they determined ovulation from monitoring bbt or mucus/sensation... we could assume they said ovulation was day of last good mucus and. Day before temp rise... but since they didn't state this (but did go into detail about how they determined O using all the other methods...) we can't really assume that.
2. Only 2 hours of sleep before bbt? Really? Sure they said at least 2. But I mean if I don't get at least 4, I chuck mine.
3. They state that clearly bbt isn't accurate at determining O but again- how did they decide what day was O using bbt and- only 2 hours of sleep?
4. The opks being 100% accurate is a bit faulty as they weren't used every time so they may have missed data (accurate 100% of the time they were used).
5. It is unknown if these women were skilled at checking for fertility signs or if they had been just taught- study leaves this info out, too. Since the participants were people who asked about starting nfp we can assume they were novices- so who knows how accurate their mucus reports were.
I find it interesting that in their study mucus tended to predict late and bbt early?!?
This doesn't make much sense from what I was taught in TCOYF.
All in all I'd shrug my shoulder at this one.
I couldn't find if this study was funded by an opk company- it was an Italian brand and study is from Italy but that doesn't mean much. Usually they will say if there is bias and this study didn't.
Someone else saw something fishy and wrote a letter to the editor:
It pretty much says: oh you tiny sample size study. We have been collecting similar data for 20+ years, including a study that confirm O with ultrasound (gold standard). And in only 11% of cases does temp shift happen before O (granted another small sample size).
I haven't read the study referred to in the letter to the editor but my gut tells me that they perhaps better trained their subjects to observe signs and take bbt after a full nights rest. In the letter they even defined how they used mucus and bbt to determine O day so yay for clarity!
