Re: Ask a STM+ Week of 11/14

  • Is anyone else feeling more angry lately?   I swear, people are getting on my nerves so much easier now.  I'm ready to kill.  That goes for my bf too.  He is driving me nuts!  Sometimes I feel like I just want to be left alone in a room for the next 10 weeks. :(

  • @ChristineO36 I am ready to move to an isolated island with no forms of communication!! DH hasn't been bad, he knows how to handle my stresses. But I told him once Baby comes, we are going to fall off the radar for a long time!

    Me: 33 DH: 38 Married: 1/10/15

1st Pregnancy EDD: 1/1/17 Born 1/10/17 Team Green turned Blue!

2nd Pregnancy EDD: 11/6/18 Born 11/09/18 Baby Boy!

    3rd Pregnancy EDD: 12/?/21

Children are like casseroles; it takes a lot to mess them up.

  • @ChristineO36 definitely!  My temper is super short.  A coworker that I normally get along with has been getting on my nerves and I am basically ready to murder my husband over his snail-paced nursery renovations.

  • @ChristineO36 same here, definitely more angry than I have been this whole pregnancy, and it only surfaced this past week. And I know I'm crazy with some of my outbursts. Just gotta remember to relax and take a breather lol

  • Possibly TMI here, but as our due dates are getting closer, did any of you trim or full shave down there? I am getting mixed research that hospitals don't care, but in case of a tear or c section, I would rather be prepared than have one of the nurses do it for me (eeek!). Plus it'll be a mess down there postpartum, so maybe at least a trim will keep it more hygienic? I normally full shave but I haven't bothered since September, when I couldn't see what I was doing and stopped going to the beach.

  • @AlicjaB with my last one I always kept it shaved. This time around I haven't made it as big of a deal. I do plan on at least trying to shave but it is already getting to be a chore. I know some people have there SO do it for them but that is way beyond my comfort zone.
  • @AlicjaB I try to keep it as trimmed as possible with my big belly in the way! with my first I shaved daily, with my second I pretty much gave up 2 months before my due date. I did tear a little bit and they had to give me 2 stitches. They did not do any extra grooming before completing the stitches.

I've actually heard that for a vaginal delivery there are some health benefits to not grooming - I guess the hair keeps bacteria out? Full disclosure that I am not a medical expert and I also do not remember where I read that last pregnancy.  It may have been in Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, which is definitely biased toward keeping everything as natural as possible.

FWIW I personally generally prefer to keep things fully groomed and last time I did as best as I could with that.  This time I care a whole lot less and now that I haven't been able to see down there for a while I definitely have not been maintaining things as well as I usually do. I wish it were just naturally hairless down there haha!

  • @AlicjaB Thank you for asking that question! I had a friend get a Brazilian wax the week before she gave birth. I just can't even imagine going into a salon to get waxed right now but I was still considering it. The last time I shaved I was so itchy afterward and I do not want to deal with it after childbirth.

I know we've talked about how many socks and what kind of socks but how the hell do you store socks?! Especially newborn socks! They're so small that I just don't know what to do now that they're in the drawer.

I keep them in a small box that goes in the drawer. That way they're at least contained!

  • @AlicjaB I actually got a Brazilian wax maybe a 1-2 weeks before my due date just to make sure the skin sensitivity would have time to subside and also that if it did start to grow, the hair would still be super short.

  • @christac1010 I had 6 pairs of socks that actually stayed on my daughters feet. They were trumpettes. (Expensive but worth it). I kept them rolled in a box in her drawer

I actually just got to that section in Ina May's book yesterday. She talks about the old belief that shaving helped prevent infections, but research has shown that it actually raises your risk of infection because of nicks and cuts. I agree that it's probably easier for you personally postpartum if things are at least kept trimmed (which I've also been doing), but I don't think the hospital will mind either way.

  • I've been attempting to keep things groomed but it is seriously difficult at this point.  And I don't trust DH to do it for me.  I don't remember how close to giving birth I shaved last time but I had a 2nd degree tear and don't remember them doing anything except stitching it up.

^^ This. When I had my c-section (planned) they specifically told me not to shave a day or so before. If they need to do any grooming the nurses  use electric clippers to avoid and nicks or cuts right before the surgery.  If you do want to groom and you know your delivery date I'd say do it a few days in advance so any minuscule cuts/ skin irritation are healed. Obviously in most cases you can't predict when you'll deliver.

ETA: electric trimmers at home are great for keeping things at an unbraidable length if you're not bare.

  • I stopped shaving when I broke out in a rash. I only use an electric razor because I'm super sensitive normally, but I guess I'm more so now. I'd rather not deal with itchy bumps during labor & postpartum, so the hospital will have to be okay with my au natural state lol

  • @christac1010 I have drawer organizer boxes in DDs dresser. The small boxes I put socks, headbands, etc and the larger ones I put onesies, pants and sleepers. I love them!
  • I will be getting a Brazilian wax a few weeks before EDD.  Because it'll be about 3-4 weeks overdue at that point, hopefully she doesn't come too early haha but I would rather wait a few extra weeks before she comes than need one soon after delivery and not being able to get one. Thankfully my hair grows slowly and thinner now that I've been waxing for a while, so I only need one every 2-3 months or so.

  • Ugh I have these bumps along my bikini line Lol both sides that are so unflattering and have been there since summer! they just don't seem to heal! so shaving has not been a priority, I have one of those finishing touch kind of electric razors so I am hoping to be able to clean things up a little before labor and delivery.
Any advice on how to get rid of the ingrown hairs? pregnancy has just seemed to prolong and aggravate them!
  • Do infants use bibs? Why do so many tiny outfits come with matching bibs...am I missing something? How do you ladies store stuff to keep the matching sets all together? Or do you not bother?

We didn't use bibs much but DD rarely spit up. They can be convenient to use to wipe milk off their cute little mouths, just pull the edge up and wipe.

  • @kelseyh62 We didn't use bibs until DD1 started eating solids. We had burp cloths to clean up any spit up or the random receiving blanket. I don't really understand the point of newborn bibs either.
    DD1: EDD 12/21/11 - Born 11/24/11 at 36w1d

  • @susykat77 I'd go with whatever you re comfortable in normally. I wore yoga pants and a tank top and a zip up hoodies last time and was perfectly happy. They do check you a lot right after, but pulling down the yoga pants wasn't really a hassle.
  • @kelseyh62 heavy spitters/droolers may benefit from bibs. I like bibdana style bibs because they look more fashionable. My daughter was neither drooly nor spitty so we used bibs for eating only. (Once she was teething at 10 months, she's wear Infiniti scarfs or bibdanas to absorb the nasty)
  • @kelseyh62 I didn't have any bibs for my daughter and she spit up so much.  I had to get a bunch, like we'd go through 5 a day or so. It helps save their clothes and prevents rashes from moisture. You don't need to buy ahead but you may end up needing some.
  • i know this has probably been asked 10 million times, but how do you know when you're having a real contraction? is the main thing is that it's rhythmic/timeable? i have had so many GI issues this entire pregnancy (sexy, I know) and was in so much pain/discomfort yesterday and a lot of my googling said contractions could also feel like GI issues. the only thing that led me to feel comfortable they weren't contractions is they didn't come and go--it was just consistent discomfort/GI crampiness. i'm scared that when I go into actual labor i'm just going to assume it's more GI issues and then a baby will just appear when I'm at the grocery store or something (I know there is no chance that this will actually happen, but humor me).
  • This is kind of my life @newyearsbaby5 it's the worst at night. It's constant tightness that doesn't relent. I can't imagine it is a contraction or even BH, but what do I know?! I also noticed that it is actually bad for me in the middle of the night when I get up to use the bathroom too. I would have thought lying on my side for hours would cause the opposite effect, but I guess not. Sometimes I think it has to do with the baby's position and having a full bladder, which I'm assuming is part of the problem in the middle of the night. Sorry I have nothing else to offer, but I can commiserate.
  • @ThePax89 the bibdanas are so cute! I love them! all others are meh.

@underthesea for some reason we already have a dozen+ bibs & I don't think I've purchased any of them! didn't even think about the spit up use. thanks for the insight.

^ this! It's been exactly the same for me, really consistent tightness starting at around 8 every night. They don't hurt, but are somehow exhausting.
  • @newyearsbaby5 @LoneStar21416 @MaryNog

Yep. Exactly the same here. Every night around 7 or 8 -- so tight, for so long. I have BH throughout the day, and then will sometimes have BH during the general tightness. I can't explain it well -- the tightness just changes.
  • @AlicjaB I'm in a similar boat to PP: I've been keeping things trimmed at home for a while. I'm going to get a sugaring/wax done a couple weeks before my due date. Technically speaking, hair does help keep bacteria away, but I like think that's outdated information. ;)
  • @AlicjaB
I've always waxed during my pregnancies  I try my best to plan my last one BC lol so theres as little hair as possible.  But I'm c section, not natural.  I don't think it makes too much different though.  I start bleeding immediately.  I haven't been as up to date as I'd like to this time around, but I will def get there two more times before LO comes.

  • I tried to keep groomed with DS, but ended up having a csection. This time, I'm a little meh about it. Repeat c-section, they're going to shave what they want to shave anyway (which wasn't much last time). At this point, I'm over it and don't care.

With DD1, my contractions did not come in waves like I was expecting. It felt more like constant menstrual cramps. As I progressed through labor, they came and went at a more rhythmic rate but it was not what I was expecting. I was basically in constant pain until I got my epidural.
You can tell the difference by sitting on the toilet to see if you get any relief or try re-positioning. If the cramping starts to get worse with no relief, it could be contractions.

  • @AlicjaB As someone who worked Postpartum, grooming is much appreciated. No one world ever say that to a patient, but it made it so much easier when cleaning the mom's up and assessing for postpartum hemorrhage if you could actually see what was happening down there. Obviously some hair is fine, but when some ladies let it go for like 7 or 8 months and I had to contend with pube dreadlocks when checking bleeding, it was hard.

I'm planning on getting waxed around 38 weeks so that even if baby is late, it'll still be somewhat under control.
  • **TW: Loss mentioned**

I normally keep my downstairs bits neatly trimmed - I'm a "it's there for a reason" type of gal, and I'm not grossed out by body hair. I had a loss last year where I bled for 10 weeks afterwards. I have never cursed pubic hair so very much than those 10 weeks. I don't know that I'll completely shave (cause I haven't done that since I left undergraduate), but I will be doing something to not be dealing with the blood-matted hair for such a long period of time.
