Solids??

how old are everyone's los and what solids have you done?

at four months he told us we could start cereal. I got one small container of oatmeal cereal and he HATED it.
he is now 5 months and like a little bird when we are eating. I always put him in his high chair with us during meals and he is super into it. I am debating starting some solids so I thought I would see what everyone else is doing. He still hates the cereal but I haven't tried anything else yet.

Also is is anyone else doing BLW??

Sam is five months old today and a great eater. So far we have tried rice cereal, sweet potatoes, carrots and apples. He is doing really well. I don't know what BLW means so I doubt I'm doing it lol.

@amangels2 baby lead weaning. Its basically letting them lead to eating what you eat.

  • We've done squash and apples so far and next is carrots.  I wanted to do baby lead weaning but a variation of it.  Rather than give him pieces of my food to chew on, I mash it up and see if he will pick it up and eat it himself.  The apples were puréed so that had to be with a spoon.

Dd is 4 months and 2 weeks old. I offered her avocado, and she totally has no interest in food. I'll try again at 5 months

she's firmula fed so I'm skipping cereal all together

I think we will skip the cereal too. He's had a little bit of rice cereal awhile back and was fine but we haven't done anything else since then, just formula.
  • My son started solids at 4 months. He's currently 5 months. He started with quinoa cereal and has had apples, pears, bananas, sweet potatoes, and peas. (He is a formula fed baby).

I'm considering mostly doing BLW with maybe a few frozen nibs or occasional spoonfuls of baby food after 6 months. He'll be EBF until then

Oddly enough my pediatrician was ok to start oatmeal or rice cereal if we wanted, definitely not pushing, but told us no fruits or veggies until 6 months

mine told me I could start cereal at four and more at five but only if he was into it. I originally planned to wait until 6 and fully jump into blw but he seems to want to eat so bad I've been considering trying some baby food now.

That sounds reasonable. If DS cared about food, I'd probably give him baby food around Thanksgiving (born 6/12) regardless of the 6 month warning from the ped, but right now he isn't interested at all. I won't push anything on him until he opens his mouth for my empty spoon while I eat my oatmeal in the mornings. Right now he just stares at me when I hold it out to him, so no worries. He might still surprise me

  • At 4 months she tried rice cereal and would open her mouth for spoon but then spit it all out so we did that a few days and I don't think she liked it so 2 weeks later we did oatmeal she opens her mouth for spoon and swallows some of it but isn't crazy about it so I offer it to her but if she doesn't want I don't push it. I might put a hold on it for a few weeks she turns 5 months in a week and is formula fed.

  • We started Charlotte on oatmeal about 3 weeks ago. She'll be 5 months next week. She'd fallen way off the growth curve at her 4 month checkup, only 8th percentile for weight. She's had a huge problem with spitting up since birth and when she was gaining weight they weren't worried, at the 4 month our doctor suggested starting on oatmeal to try and get her weight up. He thought it could help with the spit up too which it has. And after just two weeks our little peanut was up a whole pound! She loves her oatmeal and we tried bananas last week. We'll slowly start introducing other fruits and veggies over the coming weeks.
  • So from what I have heard, breast milk should be the main source of nutrition for a really long time and solids is more for education and learning new textures and tastes.  STMs sound about right?  Ive only giving him solids a total of 4 tines in the last 3 weeks.  First was the squash and the others were like a tablespoons worth of Applesauce.  He opens his mouth for the spoon and rarely spits anything out. I'm taking this as a sign he is ready and willing. Plus he keeps reaching for our food of we eat with him on our laps.  I'm nervous with the BLW cause you are supposed to give then pretty big pieces but I worry he'll take too big of a bite and choke.  When he chews on toys he shoves it so far in his mouth I'm surprised he hasn't gagged.
  • We started Charlotte around 4 months but she had been showing a lot of interest just like one of her brothers did. I skipped cereal, my boys didn't like it and my ped said it wasn't necessary. Charlotte has had carrots, prunes(which help a ton with her firm poops, she's on soy formula), apples, green beans, bananas, and sweet potatoes. No apples escape her mouth at this point and it's by far her favorite. She actually has started wanting to eat solids at lunch with her brother. She'll cry and cry and I couldn't figure out what was wrong until she started reaching for his food. So some days she gets lunch and dinner but I try to just do dinner. It has helped a lot with her spitting up, which is AMAZING! Every baby is so different and with my first I'd probably never had started solids so soon but Charlotte was already sitting up assisted and she's been all for eating. I'm just making sure she's getting enough formula everyday.
  • I have been doing oatmeal with Tristan for the past week, once a day.  I did it first as an experiment to see if he was interested and surprisingly he was!  He opened his mouth up right away...I was floored.  A majority of it is going in too! I am going to try starting Sweet Potatoes this weekend.  I don't think I will start doing multiple larger meals a day until he is 6 months old.
  • When you all started pureed food, did you add any formula/breast milk to soup it up some?
  • Yep, milk should be main nutrition source for quite a while and I used formula to make food more liquidy for my girls when they were babies. We haven't given Cameron any baby food yet because it is such a production. We did mostly baby led weaning with our girls and that worked well for us so I think I will do that with him as well, he will be 5 months on the 10th.
  • When you all started pureed food, did you add any formula/breast milk to soup it up some?
Depends on the food. For avocado I do because it's thicker. For pear or spinich or things I don't because it's already thin

  • We tried some green beans and as you can see he was like what the heck?! Then he LOVED them. I took a break to send the grandmas a video and was holding the spoon and he was leaning towards it with his mouth open like "GIVE ME MORE NOW" haha

  • I'm jealous. I've been on the lookout for "the signs" that Jackie is ready for solids because I'm so excited for this next phase. Nothing (4 months and 1 weeks old). I tried giving her my empty spoon after eating my yogurt and she had no idea what to do with it, which is funny because EVERYTHING else she gets her hands on goes in her mouth.

Savannah's not giving me signs yet either, other than watching me eat with more interest than before. I'm going to try to wait until the 6 month mark but we shall see!

I was thinking about buying some spoons soon and having her play with them.

I also want to start putting her in her high chair during dinner time so she gets used to "sitting with us" now that she is able to sit in a chair with some help.

That was kind of my plan too. I've been researching high chairs and I'm definitely getting one before thanksgiving so she can be part of the action.

  • This might sound like a duh but be careful when letting them play with spoons, Charlotte nearly made herself vomit because she jammed one down her throat. I was sitting there watching her but she was one quick monster. I was thinking oh how cute she's trying to feed herself, turns out not so cute.

  • My husband gave Cameron some prune applesauce the other day.

    Stuck:

Jackie did that with her banana toothbrush the other day. Luckily it's designed not to get too far, but she jammed it in just far enough to trigger her gag reflex. All over her freshly washed sleeper and sleep sack...

  • @kaitielynnrichardson that was our plan too but Lennox did the same thing! He has super been into us eating since four months. I feel like it has a lot to do with him sitting in his high chair with us for all meals. He started following us when we put stuff in our mouths and opening his lol he was too cute. He has taken so quickly to it too. He's a little fatty. We tried sweet potatoes last night and he cried when I wasn't getting it in his mouth fast enough lol

  • Just started my LO on cereal this past weekend. He's five months old. He took to it well but wanted to suck his fingers more than anything. As soon as he saw the spoon, he'd take out his fingers and open his mouth. This on the first try. He seems pretty darned ready.
We're holding off on veggies until month 6.
  • Damien had his (late) 4-month appt today. He will be 21 weeks on Thursday. He is 15.5lbs and 25.1ins long. She said he is ready to start solids. We can start him on rice cereal, 1-2 tablespoons 3x a day for 3 days. Then we can add something like puréed carrots and do that 3x a day for 3 days, then try another new food, etc. We can try other cereals too and the ultimate meal schedule she proposed is:

    Breakfast: Cereal + fruit
Lunch: Fruit + Veg + Protein
Dinner: Fruit + Veg + Protein/Cereal (we are supposed to alternate the protein and cereal)

Proteins can be chicken, pork, yogurt, cheese, etc. The only restriction at this point is no honey.

We still need to give him milk and make sure he continues to drink the same amount each day that he currently is drinking.

LO showed interest at 16weeks and started "tasting" (cutting up whole veggies and fruits to play with and put in mouth but not eating) at 18 weeks. So far she has tasted apples, carrots, salad turnips, kale, green beans, and probably some others. She plays with whole foods while we eat so she is beginning to understand why we gather around the table three times a day.  Our rule for tasting is whole fruit or vegetable, no grains, protein, or fats. We recently gave her some cooked winter squash (20 weeks old). She loved it and was trying to actually eat it, although she got more on her than in her. We tried a banana yesterday (at 21 weeks) but she didn't really care for it. I think this is mostly in line with BLW. my husband would like to do purees but we haven't made any or tried a spoon yet.

We sprung for the baby Bjorn high chair and I LOVE it. It was expensive but it folds so flat for storage and takes up little space in general. It is quite sturdy for its size. She's very supported in it and so far likes being in it with us when we eat.

Edited to add: it travels well too. We took it to my FIL for a birthday dinner this week and it was super light and easy to cart around.
  • @ashkee05 we are doing sweet potato tomorrow!!!
  • Question for you ladies! When do you feed your LOs solids? By that I mean do you do it when your LO is hungry or do you wait for a certain time after a bottle/breast feed to do it, etc.?

Our pediatrician said like 30-45 min after a feed.  It's just getting then used to eating right now and it's not meant to replace nursing for a few more months

For sure! I just wasn't certain about the timeframe since I didn't want to ruin his "meal" by feeding him solids too close to a bottle feeding. Our ped made it clear that he should continue to drink the same amount of formula per day that he's been drinking.

Honestly I'm not sure if it is better because of the food Or because he's getting older. Lol. He's been sleeping from 7:30-5:30am and wakes up to have a bottle only once (sometimes he wakes up and rolls over so we go in to soothe him without picking him up).

I am at my wits end! The most she will nap is 35 minutes and her sleeping is awful. I put her down at 8:15 and she was up at 10:45 and fought going back down for an hour and is up again at 2:45 and wouldn't go down without nursing.

I go back to work in 2 weeks and will need to be up at 5am M-F and am freaking out. My hours are non-negotiable as is ne working.

  • Anyone buying baby food instead of making your own? What kind?  I plan to do some of both.  So we tried our first bite of solids tonight.  Butternut squash.  I don't really know if he just wasn't sure about it or flat didn't like it.  Pretty sure if any actually got swallowed it was barely any.
