I have DS while DH is in class in the afternoons/evenings half the week. I am really tired after little sleep and working all day. All this is to try to excuse the fact that I was changing DS's diaper (peepee diap) the other evening and he had some dinner on his face. Without thinking, I wiped up from the diap, then wiped his face - with the same wipe. Then I balled up the daip and set it aside and he proceeded to put it in a nearby bowl and pretend to drink it. Mom failing all over the place. He's no worse for the wear though.
I may have skipped a mid-day section of a conference yesterday to sit in my car and rest...
@slartybartfast I've also had mom fails the last few weeks due to over tiredness.
I stayed in bed this morning for 40 minutes after the alarm went off..... forcing DH to pack all the lunches, feed the dogs, and wake up DD. I finally got up but took so long trying to put my pants on that DH also had to load the car. I basically went straight from bed to the car ( we carpool) where I'm now bumping. it's a rough life.
I'm dropping H off at his dad's for a weekend hunting trip in about an hour. I got him up ober an hour early, so he can feel as sleep deprived as I have been all week.

We're not going to my SILs Halloween party on Sunday. I'm not driving 45 minutes away to be in a house that's messy and makes me uncomfortable, and none of our friends are going because it's over an hour away for them. So we're going to a fall festival at a friend's church, which is also 45 minutes away. But at least it's about 15-20 minutes from my parents house. I feel so much more comfortable in that situation.

It legitimately bothers me when I see children at DS' school that look like they rolled out of bed, haven't been bathed in days and are in mismatched clothes many, many sizes too small. It's not a money thing, it's an effort thing... you can't wash the caked on breakfast (and likely last nights dinner) off your kid's face? How about a comb? You can also shop second hand, garage sales and consignment stores and still have your child look pulled together. I buy DS' Levi's and Lucky's from a consignment store for $6 each because I won't spend that much on new name brand jeans that will get shredded.
Meanwhile, Mom's got a $300 purse, Frye boots and getting into her brand new $60k Yukon. Maybe I shouldn't, but I view my child as an extension of me and my husband and it's important to me that he looks well groomed and cared for.
@DiFazette - not to mention, what is that teaching your kid? Shouldn't you be teaching them they need to wash up before they go places? I mean I get with toddlers it's not ALWAYS possible, but it shouldn't NEVER be possible.
My maternity photographer just posted a "sneak peek" on her facebook from out maternity session. I think the photo is cute and want to tag myself, but I don't want MIL knowing we did a maternity session because then she will demand the images when they're ready and I don't want to give them to her.
I seriously don't care how these babies are born. No birth plan, no wishes....just be born healthy please. People seem to be bothered by this, which I don't really get. It's great that so many of you have plans and wishes, but me not having a plan doesn't make me less of a mom. I think some women focus way to much on how their babies are born. I didn't want to be disappointed or upset, so I just decided to go with things.
So I guess that's kinda a UP and a FFFC.
Also, I had a small glass of wine last week...it was glorious....
@DiFazette - completely agree! DH and I clearance rack shop at marshalls/TJ Maxx, etc year round to keep the kids in nice clothes/shoes for cheap. We make DS brush his teeth, wash his face/hands and do his hair every day before we leave the house. I visited his class a few weeks back and was shocked at what kids were at school in! Dirty clothes, disheveled hair, etc. It definitely isn't a money thing, it is teaching your children to properly care for themselves!
@DiFazette A few weeks ago we were eating lunch and I saw this kid with clothes that were obviously too small for him. His tummy was poking out! I assumed that maybe the parents were poor or had fallen on hard times, until I heard the mom talking loudly about going on a girls' trip soon with her sister to California. This child seemed to be very aware that his clothes were small and embarrassed. I felt so bad for him.
Children may be small and not understand the adult world, but I do think that children deserve respect and decency. Willingly dressing your child in dirty or small clothes, not grooming them... you're telling your child you don't respect ( or love) them enough to care for them. Then these parents have the gall to be surprised when their child doesn't want to listen, acts out, or has no respect for others or themselves. It's really sad.
ETA Obviously not including the trials of parenthood where sometimes these things happen-- talking about chronic lack of caring or neglect.
@DiFazette my kiddo often goes to school with messy hair. she gets a bath 2ce a week per doctors recommendation (extreme skin issues prevent more). depending on what she eats for breakfast on the way to school, sometimes she has food already on her clothes. we do wash hands and wipe her face when we get to her room though . and I guess she doesn't always look put together clothes wise because she's dead set on picking her own some days... so sometimes it's a big frilly dress with Darth Vader light up shoes, and some days it's a long sleeve mickey shirt with shorts. and half her jeans are starting to be too short since 24 months are short but fit the waist and 2t are too long and fall down. she also goes to school with yyesterday hair do still in her hair.... because her favorite teacher does cool things like pig tails and braids and DH and I are not allowed to remove them according to the 2.5 year old dictator.
Point I'm trying to make is that it's not always how it seems. money isn't the issue why she has strange fitting clothes, laziness isn't the reason why she can't have daily baths, and not putting in effort isn't why she has messy hair in the mornings. we also leave the house at 6am so getting her up even earlier isn't an option and some days we literally change her into clothes in bed and carry her to the carseat with her sippy of milk.
However, as she gets older and moves out of daycare and into preschool, things wont be so loosey goosey. and yes there are days that I just know we are being judged. but she's cared for and loved and healthy and happy.
My car is a 2008 volvo that was gifted to us 2 years ago when a relative passed away, my shoes cost 25 bucks, my full work wardrobe was purchased at kohls on clearance or marshalls. so we aren't the kind of people who spend on ourselves and not our kids. but my kid sometimes looks how you describe.
@DiFazette the only reason my niece would leave the house with messy hair was because she HATED brushing her hair, or having her hair brushed. Other than that she was well dressed (dirty clothes only because she decided playing in the dirt looked like fun) and washed up. Her parents keep her hair above shoulder length because, at 9, she still hates brushing her hair.

Re: kids not looking put together. As a 5th grade teacher in a low income area, about 25% of my class look like the kids being described at any given time. Yes, I agree that sometimes this happens because of the parents are selfish and just don't care (I've met a fair share of these parents). Some of these parents have additional issues (drugs, alcohol, depression) which can lead siblings to step in and be the parents. I had a student last year who did not have his uniform clean a few times because his sister (a year younger than him) did not get time to do laundry for the week.
But in all fairness, some of these parents are really trying hard and literally are bouncing around homeless shelters/living rooms/homes of relatives while trying to maintain a job and feed their family. Those parents do not have laundry and combing hair as a priority. Or they are extremely busy. I met with a parent this week who moved his family here from the Philippines 3 years ago. He works 3 jobs and his wife is still overseas (student skypes frequently with her) but Dad is just overwhelmed right now and hoping he can transition to 2 jobs soon.
So really I've seen both sides of the situation. Yes, I am angry and upset at the first set of parents, but knowing that the second set of parents exists makes me remember that we look at situations through one point of view. We should look at these situations and think "what does it look like?" AND "what could I be missing?"
@sourlemon DS chooses his clothes most days too. The only options I keep available to him are seasonally appropriate and well fitting. If it's stained, it goes away. If it's too small, it goes away. From my seat, there are ways to allow your child to be 'independent' while still ensuring it's acceptable. We don't have to agree, that's why it's my confession
I almost posted fffc that DS hasn't had a bath in a few days because moms so freaking beat at night and dh doesn't get home til like 9. I also barely remembered to wipe the oatmeal off his face before leaving this morning. His clothes are from my cousins so he's dressed well but without them providing the hand me downs... I'm not sure what toddler looks I'd pull together. However I doubt they would impress anyone. Also DS has Garry potter hair but super blonde. We got it cut and like a week later is was scraggly long again it seemed. I try to comb it on occasion but it's futile
Though i I know the issue raised is one that's a little more complicated than that and certainly the situation changes as toddlers become older but... I'm totally okay with DS looking like a wild man that knows how to play and practices feeding himself. Toddler style is no priority of ours!
I didn't say strangers on the street. I said kids in DS' school... Not a public school, an expensive, private daycare. Another classroom mom who is a SAHM and puts her child in preschool for socialization and pays $110/mo for her Pure Barre membership monthly does not get a free pass because 'maybe I don't know what they're dealing with.' I don't think about it that deeply. My point is that it takes 1 minute to wash a face, comb hair or brush teeth. Choosing not to sends a message when you have the ability to do so. I also know that these families are not struggling, because they are not strangers. So to send your child to school in a short sleeve shirt two sizes too small and no jacket when it's 46 degrees outside gets judgement from me.
Your example of people going from shelter to shelter has no bearing on this situation. This is not the population I am referring to.
On the kids look: L is not quite 15 months. He has started picking his own clothes every day. Which right now is limited to long sleeve onesies and sweats with either boots/tennies, but who knows what he will look like in 1+ year.
He also has hair that will not stay down. I have hairsprayed, gelled, moused, and wet down that mop, but nothing does the job. So he looks like he never gets a hair do, but he brushes it himself multiple times a day.
At this stage I find it cute, but as a school age child. . . Who knows.

@DiFazette generally we only keep seasonally appropriate clothes available for dd... but here it's almost Halloween and it was 85 and sunny yesterday so most kids are still in shorts. and even Christmas dresses that she wears year round are sleeveless but we do give her a jacket if it's cooler than 60 in the morning.
However I don't trash stained shirts right away. fffc I actually sent her in a slightly stained one today because they are painting pumpkins and will get paint on clothes. but stained clothes are reserved for art at home or days we know they are painting at daycare.

@sourlemon I hear you... there's a time and a place for everything. Where I refuse to be empathetic is in a situation like I see... stay at home mom's got Lululemon on head to toe with a full face of makeup so she can go to her gym class and the child is not clean, nor dressed appropriately for the weather. Mom had time to curl her hair but not wash Johnny's face this morning? There will never be a situation where I find it appropriate that a parents needs get met and a child's does not.
Oh and ETA - I don't trash DS' stained clothes - I remove them from his drawers as options for him. They go in a bin in his closet and we pull from that regularly when he's helping Daddy do yard work/painting, etc. I
@DiFazette my best friend worked at a very nice (read: expensive!) daycare for years and she would tell me about the parents you've described also. It makes me very sad when a capable person repeatedly neglects the hygiene of their child. Key being repeated, once in a while kids are going to look like a hot mess, it happens haha
@brittnic86 I so agree with you. And of course me not caring opens up to "Well, you have to do x because that's best, blah, blah, blah". It's like the think I'm just lazy and not informed. No, I'm probably more informed because I've researched every option to be prepared on all fronts.

@BabyRobbinsAdventure oh for sure it happens! Shit, it happens by the time I pick him up from school most days. Snot on his face, dirt caked under his nails and marker on his shirt.
Moving away from the appearance theme, my FFFC: I don't know the difference between Billy Joel and Jon Bon Jovi. They're both older dudes that have songs that were played during happy hour in my college days. I could tell the difference in photos, but can't tell who sings which song. That really irks some people
@brittnic86 I had no set plan for my first except to have both of us survive. I hoped for certain things but never wrote anything down except survive. so much is out of our control that I didn't feel like the stress of sticking to a plan or even knowing I had a plan was smart. I researched a ton and still felt that way.
I still felt like a failure having a c section after 42 hours of labor but that was more about not being able to finish what I started rather than not sticking to my plan. i apologized to DH while getting sewn up. i felt like I let him down since he wasn't allowed into the OR it was such a dire situation . all he said for weeks was that he's glad we both survived because the nurse told him I died on the table. it took a while to get over the whole thing but at the end of the day, we both survived, and that was all that really matters.
My plan this time is for dh to be there when his kid is born. i know he still wishes he could have been there when dd1 was born so I really really really want him there this time. I'd also like to not puke on the table.... but that's out of my control!
@l9i right?! My doctor told me I'm 95% chance going to have a c-section. My response, cool, when. I had a friend ask me how I felt about that...um...fine? No I'm horribly upset and feel like a failure. That's the last thing I wanted, so from the beginning, I just decided whatever happens happens. I watched my SIL plan this whole midwife, birthing center, med free birth...then spend three days in back labor because she refused to give up, and ended up in the hospital with an emergency C-section. Her kid is three now, and she still talks about being disappointed that she didn't get the birth she wanted. She got a baby, what else did you ACTUALLY want out of your birth? If you want to feel everything, and "really experience" your birth, that's great...for you. I'd rather not be in pain, and that doesn't make me lazy, weak, or selfish. Everyone's birth plan is great for them, and NO ONE should judge others for how they choose to give birth. I'm not saying I'll just let the doctors do whatever they want to me, they ask, I respond. *shrug* I guess I don't get the obsession with trying to plan out something you can't always control.
@brittnic86 I was the same way with L. This time I'd prefer a VBaC so we feel safe having more later, while if we have another CS I'm calling it good and tying the tubes. Otherwise just five me a baby.

@brittnic86 and your perspective may likely allow better bonding, feeding and healing from delivery. You've got your eye on the end goal, not the journey. It's okay to desire a certain journey, but to get so caught up often leads to disappointment.
I had someone tell me that it's a shame I wasn't 'stronger' since I had a c section at 34 weeks with DS. Strength was not a factor, not dying was. When your internal organs start to shut down and your child isn't getting nutrients and you're on the verge of a deadly stroke your plan becomes 'stay alive' like @sourlemon said. It's your journey girl, rock the crap out of it and don't apologize! If you really want to get under their skin tell them you chose a c-section - it drives the crunchy ones nuts!
My bp has been slowly creeping up and even if it doesn't turn to pre-e my dr will want to induce after 36 weeks if it is at a certain point. My FFC is that if she wants to induce at 36 or 37 weeks I'd rather just go with the c-section. I really don't want to go through 30+ hours of labor just to end up having a c-section.
FFFC - I mentioned this in the Random post, but my work is having a "Bring your Kid in to Trick or Treat in Costume" the rest of the afternoon today. Well, a girl who I have known forever walks by with her boy (who I think is 6-7 in age) and was like, "See, they do get this big eventually!". Um, OK? Thanks.

I'm aiming for med free but if there were some major complications thrown into the mix, I'd be all for a scheduled c. laboring my heart out just to have an emergency c is Definitely something I'd want to avoid.
Not having a plan is the smartest thing you can do. I'd rather just be happy my baby is born and not feel disappointed and guilty. I've been there and it ruined the moment.
Ugh I don't brush my DS's hair in the morning. He's 8 and capable of doing it himself and I get really tired of fighting with him. But I do set his clothes out and he's not dirty. I cut his hair and would prefer to keep it short enough it that didn't need to be brushed but he doesn't like that either. I have to choose my battles.
@kate08young I have pretty much checked out for the day with everyone walking around. It's hard to concentrate.
I am all for giving birth in whatever way is best for both me and my baby. I would love to do it vaginally (with meds), but if a c-section was necessary, that would be fine.

@slartybartfast@KatieJo1205 I truly think if they wanted to induce I'd just go for the c section. I've heard of far too many instances of induction, labor for a day+, then c section.

TTC #3 08/2017 BFP 11/27/2017.
Twin B lost 11/22/2017, Twin A doing well.
I am all for giving birth in whatever way is best for both me and my baby. I would love to do it vaginally (with meds), but if a c-section was necessary, that would be fine.
