Re: October Randoms

  • @TiffRox81 sorry you are having a tough time! I have those nights when I just finished feeding him and about 20 minutes later, he screams his head off as if it's been hours since he last ate. A quick pop of the paci in the mouth and it's usually a good soother. Sometimes though he will spit it out and cry and thus begins how many steps can mommy do in the dark without busting her ass :weary:

  • Dude, @arhodes6 you're speaking my language. Leap 4 sucks, lol!! I must be getting used to 2 hour sleep increments because I wasn't as worn down this morning.
  • @TiffRox81 we are in the sleep regression too. E is barely napping (maybe 10 minutes in the morning, an hour in the afternoon, and that's it). We are also up a whole bunch with her during the night, usually because she's spat her paci out and wants it back.

Which relates to my next question. Mommas whose LOs are rolling over, do they do it in the middle of the night? We are just rolling from back to tummy so she whines when she gets stuck and can't roll back over. This is another huge reason we are waking up a lot at night. Not sure if there's a fix for this?

@schaze Well you aren't alone!! We're suffering together lol. She's a roller, but I still have her swaddled to sleep. She prefers being swaddled and I guess it's nice I know she can't roll in her crib. But the throws her legs up and down quite often!! Maybe try rolling up a couple towels under the fitted sheet and kind of "boxing" her into an area her size in the crib? I've done that for L!
  • Just want to say that if your babies are rolling please don't swaddle them! They CAN roll swaddled and many suffocate that way. My last infant death I had at work was a swaddled baby who rolled  :'(
  • Jaxon finally had his shots today. He took it like a champ!! Phillip said he screamed on the third one. Guess it took two shots to get him going. He napped and then woke up with a big smile. I gave him a dose of Tylenol after his last feeding just to be sure he will get to sleep ok because I know it's probably going to hurt tomorrow. I'm a proud momma!
  • @mnkenned- how terrible. I'm sorry you had to experience that. Thanks for the reminder.
  • @mnkenned Part of my reasoning for swaddling was as much because I thought she needed it as it acted as another layer to help keep her warm. We do have some of those Halo sleep sacks. I'm guessing those are ok?? I definitely won't continue swaddling but I probably need to come up with something. She's just eaten and ordinarily goes back down pretty easily. Without the swaddle, not so much!!
  • @TiffRox81 my understanding is that sleep sacks are okay as long as their arms are out so that if they roll over they can use their arms to help them roll back.
  • Ive heard sleep sacks are fine too @TiffRox81 @stellaluna14
  • So I gave my DD tylenol last night for teething and she choked on it!  She started turning purple and we had to call 911.  She got it up before the medics arrived and they checked her out just to be sure but OMG the most terrifying moment ever.  I'm sure the whole thing was only a few minutes but it felt like an eternity until she started breathing again.

I will be brushing up on infant first aid and printing cheat sheets for around the house and her diaper bag.

I have a call into the pedi to check (they aren't open yet) but does anyone know if you can mix the Tylenol in with a bottle?  Is it as effective? I'm terrified of giving it to her again :(
  • @kmurdock925- that is scary! I'm sorry. I don't know if you can mix it in.  However, we use a baby dropper and push it in very slowly.  There are also medicine droppers that look like a bottle nipple (bottom of picture). I wonder if that would work better?
  • holly142 I used one of the nipple dispensers thinking it would allow her to take it at her own pace (have previously used the syringe that came with it before)  I'm wondering if the flow of the nipple was more advanced than what she is used to??  I think I'm going to swing by CVS today and grab a dropper.  That seems like there may be more control in comparison to possibly pushing the syringe too hard.  I threw out the nipple dispenser.

  • @kmurdock925 I'm so sorry that scary situation happened to you. I would definitely ask her doc before asking one of us! I can tell you that they make a bottle medicine dispenser that was in my baby's first aid kit you can use assuming you used the medicine dropper that came with it. I hope she gets relief from her teething soon! :disappointed:

  • Thanks @jodi1980.  I have a call in with them and am waiting for the return call.  The bottle medicine dispenser in the kit is exactly what I used :( I never had an issue with the syringe that came with the Tylenol so I'm not sure why I used something different...I won't be using the bottle dispenser again.

It is mind blowing that the teething has started so soon!

@kmurdock925 That sounds terrifying! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm sure she got tons of snuggles afterwards. We've only had to give Tylenol once for a fever when William had a cold but we did it the same way we do his vitamin D. With a syringe, a little at a time, into his cheek pouch. That way he swallows at his own pace.  Could be worth a shot if the dropper doesn't work.

Edited because humans swallow not shallow.
  • Did u try giving med at side of cheek and slowly? I was told this helps them from gagging
  • There were loads of snuggles and kisses!  It was even harder to leave her this morning for work!  At least she is with her grandma.  The first time I really felt like a mom was at the hospital when they were asking for permission for shots and such- I think last night was the second time it really hit home that I'm a mommy now.

I've done in the side of the cheek before and she didn't gag but I felt like she squished a bunch out of the corner of her mouth so I was concerned about her getting the right dosage.

I just got off the phone with the doc and they said it is fine to mix the Tylenol in her bottle as long as she finishes it- that is my new method of choice!!

    Thanks everyone!
  • @kmurdock925 oh my goodness. That is so scary!! I am glad your baby is ok. I can't imagine.

I know a lot of us are having trouble with sleep. Especially now that we are getting into the 4 month regression. Should we have a separate thread for support??

In that same vein, why won't my baby sleep????? She's in leap 4. When she was 2 months I taught her how to fall asleep by herself. She is always put down awake and rarely even fussed to sleep anymore. Now it is a disaster! Night time goes well at first, but she used to sleep 8-10 hours and it is now every 1-3 hours. It's been 3 weeks of this. I thought at first it was growth spurt. Then crib transition. Then I stopped swaddling. Too cold? Too hot? I've tried multiple sleep trainings. Nothing. She has no sleep associations that require me. No rocking, pacifier, etc.
  • What a scary call to have to make. That at is terrible, @kmurdock925

@shaylalr I agree with separate thread for 4 month sleep regression issues. Seem to be a lot of us in that boat!

We may have had a bit of a breakthrough last night. She had been doing the typical wake every 1.5-2 hours. It was killing me. Last night I decided I was going to pump like crazy and give her bottles right before bed and for her first overnight feeding. All be darned...it made a big difference. Also, at 12am and 4, she put herself to sleep!! She was wide awake at 12am after 5oz! I'd rock her, she'd be asleep, I'd lay her down and she'd wake up. I finally thought I've got to try leaving her in her crib and seeing what happens. I was shocked!!! She moved around and grunted a few times and then I watched her fall asleep!!!! Same thing happened at 4am!!! She redeemed herself for the lack of sleep the previous few days, lol!!

@shaylalr I feel like you...I'd tried it all. For me it seems to be making sure she's loaded with food! I did read part of the regression could be them needing to eat more. Not sure if you've played around with food quantities.
  • When we were starting to have some sleep regression I upped her intake during the day (formula fed after 6 weeks) and it seemed to help.  Also now that she is rolling on her own she puts herself on her side and seems to sleep well that way.  I watch her on the monitor and she stays that way until she wakes up and starts playing with her feet.

When we were still nursing (I supplemented from time to time) I would give her formula before bed and it seemed to help her sleep longer for that first stretch.  The breastmilk seemed to go right through her.   Not sure if that is an option for you?
  • @TiffRox81 - we're having the same issue because she is rolling but still startles herself awake. Sleep sacks are fine and my friends swears by Baby Merlin's magic sleep suit. My LO is still too small for it I think but if your baby still startles might be worth a try. And it's super warm.
  • Interesting @kmurdock925. I've wondered about formula vs breast milk difference. I have supplemented when needed myself but recently my production has been good and I haven't needed to. Maybe I bank what I'm producing at night for next month when I return to work and supplement with formula.
  • @kmurdock925 i was gonna say, LO is so young to be teething but every baby is different! I'm sure LO is right around the corner....God help us!

  • @jodi1980 I'm blissfully hoping that the earlier we start the sooner we will be done, lol.  She shows all of the signs of teething and I can feel ridges along her gums when I stick my finger in there and if I pull her lips aside I can even see the teeth under there and protruding out a bit! EEK!  From what I've read teething can start at 4 months or if they are super early 3 months so it looks like I'm one of the lucky ones, ha.  While I'm sure it will be super cute when the first one pops out- I do love her big gummy smile now!

TiffRox81 - that is the main reason I had to start supplementing.  The breastmilk went right through her (literally, she would poop minutes after finishing nursing) and therefore she was never satisfied and would nurse All. The. Time. and I felt like a cow and she was crabby.  Once I started adding formula (began with alternating feedings) I immediately noticed she could go for much longer stretches after the formula.  I then planned accordingly for her pre-bedtime feeding to be a bottle then would nurse in the middle of the night.  I eventually realized she was happier on the formula and I was happier not dealing with the stress of nursing so we went straight formula (ended up on Soy due to serious tummy troubles/trial and error) and she is now a super-duper happy kiddo and we go for 6-8 hour stretches at night, then back to sleep for another 3ish before she is up for the day.
  • @kmurdock925- DD1 got her first 2 teeth at 4 months old, 6 teeth at 6 months, 12 teeth total at 12 months old. When I took her to her first dentist app at 1 year old they scheduled her 2nd app at 1 1/2 years old instead of the normal 2 years because they figured she'd have all her teeth by then! And she did! It was nice to not have to deal with teething later on but DD1 was a big biter. I wonder how much was because her mouth was sore all the time.
  • @holly142- That is so fast!  I don't know that I've heard of anyone else having that many teeth that quickly.  That is interesting about the biting.  If my LO doesn't have something to chew she will start trying to chew our shoulder...I can see that translating to biting later on.

So far we have had good luck filling this bad boy with ice and letting her chomp on it...It just gets a little messy when it gets melty.

  • Her sleep definitely isn't food related. Last night my sister in law gave her 7 ounces of formula before my husband picked her up. I didn't have enough pumped for that last feeding. She still slept horribly!!
  • eek!  yup, that isn't the issue...7 oz is a lot!
  • Ahh!! Bummer @shaylalr Hopefully it just works itself out soon. How long has she been bothered by the 4MSR? Our LO is a big eater too. I've only gone as high as 5oz but I bet she could handle
    more sometimes.

and does anyone else find it more disturbing than ever to read or watch the news now that we're parents?  This world is terrifying.
I ask my husband all the time if we can lock her in th closet and home school her. I'm only half kidding too.
There have been a ton of teacher-student relationships in the news in the city I live in. We are seriously considering home schooling. I don't remember the world being this scary growing up
  • Yep. Just was having a conversation about this with a neighbor with a July baby also. It's a different world out there now. A scary world. The bullying too!!! It makes me so incredibly sad each time I read stories of what kids are willing to do and say to other kids!! Ugh!! Not sure what the answer is.
