Adoption

Crickets? Hellllllloooooo?

I come to this board about weekly, always hoping there will randomly be a burst of discussions and people. Is there anyone else that lurks this board? Maybe if there are enough, we can organize and come together? Check-ins and what not? Can I get, like, a love tit or comments if there are any other people who would like to see the board a little more active?

    Oh shit, wrong board. Edited.

  • Yeah, I hate how dead this board is. I'd like some kind of check-in. It doesn't seem like there would be many of us, but maybe if we start some organization more people will see it and join in.

  • I say let's get something started! What kind of check-ins do we want? With adoption there are so many different places people could be - just looking into it, somewhere in the process of adopting (both domestic or abroad), fostering, raising an adopted child, people who are adopted. I'm probably forgetting something, too.
  • @britters314

    I'd say all of the above broken into the following groups:

    1. Looking into & in the process of adopting (both domestic or abroad)
    2. Fostering & raising an adopted child
    3. Growing up adopted

    There are so many other areas like have you met / do you know your biological parents, adopted child & biological child(ren) etc but I think those sub categories if you will are covered in the broader categories. Thoughts?

  • @SaphireSweetie88  I think those are good for now and it leaves room to expand if and when more people join us. The only thing I would change is in group 1, including the process of being licensed for foster care and/or waiting for a placement. I'm trying to think of a nice, shorter way of putting all of that. Maybe Pre-Adoption?

    @KristoB  What are your thoughts?
  • Sorry, guys. I took a short Bump break.

    Yeah, totally. I was thinking similar to @SaphireSweetie88
    -"I'm Adopted" / "I'm a birth mother"
    ...and then prompts for those who are either adopted or parents who allowed someone to adopt their birth-child.
    -"I'm Adopting" (monthly)
    ...and then prompts for where you are in the process that month and any questions, etc.
    -"I Adopted"
    ... and then prompts about raising an adopted child, etc.

    @britters314 & @SaphireSweetie88 ... forgot to tag...

  • This was the list of prompts I sorta came up with when I was thinking about it. It obviously can be edited, etc.

    “I’m Adopted!” and “I’m a Birth mom!”

    -Are you adopted or a birth parent?

    -At what age were you adopted/placed the child for adoption?

    -Do you have contact with your birth family/adopted child?

    -What kind of contact?

    -How did you handle knowing you were placed/placing a child?

    -Any tips from your experience?

    -What was your experience, overall?

    -Anything else to add?

    “I’m adopting!”

    -What route (Foster Care adoption, domestic, international)?

    -Where are you in the process right now (just thinking, home study, waiting for match, etc.)

    -How are you feeling about the process right now?

    -Any questions?

    -Any tips for the steps you’ve passed?

    -Anything else to add?

    “I adopted!”

    -What route (Foster Care adoption, domestic, international)?

    -How long ago?

    -What age was the child when adopted?

    -What are parenting struggles you deal with?

    -Any questions?

    -Any tips?

    Please also join us in our Monthly threads. We have three-

    "I'm adopting"
    This is for those who are thinking of adopting, or who are currently in the process of adopting. If you fit in this category, please follow the prompts and feel free to add anymore important or pertinent information.

    "I adopted"
    This is for those who have already adopted a child and are now parenting an adopted child. If you fit in this category, please follow the prompts and feel free to add anymore important or pertinent information.

  • @katymarie101 - Welcome. I truly hope IVF works out for you... but I also hope adoption can work too!

    @kyrgyzshan - Did you read this post at all before making a commenting and then making a thread? We are working on getting some threads open to talk. Those will be great places to chat about where we are in the process, but with a little organization so we can all participate and actually get some good information and camaraderie.

     @britters314 , @SaphireSweetie88
    Also, since I think most (if not all of us at least present) are doing this after/while going through IF. Maybe we should also have a thread dedicated to adoption after IF? I'm not so sure if it should be a prompt, or a place to just open discuss, or if it would even be something we would use...?

  • @KristoB  Just two comments - in the "I adopted" thread, I think we should make it more clear that people who are currently fostering can post in there, too.  Also, we could have the adoption after IF thread and if we don't end up using it, we can always just absorb it into the other threads.
  • @britters314 - Should I put in prompts for the A after IF thread? Or just let it be?

    Also, should we do an intro thread? or nah?

    How bout this for a stickied? Anything else to add @SaphireSweetie88
    or @britters314 ?

    Welcome to the Adoption board!
    Remember: This is a community, remember to lurk and learn the vibe of the group before you post.

    Please be sure to check out the FAQ stickied thread. It has lots of good information about adoption. please be sure you read that before posting questions, as it could answer most queries people have.

    Please also join us in our Monthly threads. We have three-
    "I was adopted/I'm a birth mom"
    This is for those who were previously adopted or who gave birth and then placed a child for adoption. If you fit one of those categories, please follow the prompts and feel free to add anymore important or pertinent information.

    @KristoB

    I would either add a 4th one ( I'm Fostering) or make that part of I'm adopting (I'm adopting / fostering)

    I would also add "I was a foster child" to the 1st one or make another thread for that. I feel like "I'm a birth mom" is a bit out of place but I'm not sure where else it would go...

    @katymarie101 - Welcome.

     @britters314 , @SaphireSweetie88
    Also, since I think most (if not all of us at least present) are doing this after/while going through IF. Maybe we should also have a thread dedicated to adoption after IF? I'm not so sure if it should be a prompt, or a place to just open discuss, or if it would even be something we would use...?

    @KristoB

    I think it would be okay to include that in the "I adopted" thread and I like the idea of an intro thread

    @britters314 - Should I put in prompts for the A after IF thread? Or just let it be?

    Also, should we do an intro thread? or nah?
    You know, I'm really not even sure what prompts to use for a whole IF thread. Maybe it could just be something in one/some of the other threads. Perhaps a "what brought you to consider adoption?" (though that could end up being repetitive every month) or "are you also trying to have bio kids?" Or we could just leave it to the IF/TTGP boards for now. I'm kind of neutral on it.

    I'm also kind of neutral on the intro thread. Maybe we could wait until we get a few more people before starting it? Though if anyone else does want to do one, I'm not opposed.
  • I like the idea of an intro thread (because some stories may be longer) and that way when we get new people looking / joining (hopefully) they can read the intro thread and get a back story on those who are participating.

    What do you think of an abbreviations thread (or part as the stickied thread)? @britters314 @KristoB
       ex: BM = biological mother / BD = biological dad, etc

  • @SaphireSweetie88  I think putting abbreviations in the stickied thread would be good. Though I'm not sure about BM and BD for bio mom and bio dad, since those already have other meanings..
  • @britters314

    Good point. What would you suggest?

    Okay. So let's say no in the IF thread, but yes to the intro? just so we have a place for it?

    As far as abbreviations and acronyms, there is a list I already have that was emailed to me. It's the "official" ones the social workers use... I will post it tomorrow (I'm a work bumper, so I'm about to leave the office).

    Sounds good to me. I will go ahead and start the Intro thread. I can start the stickied thread too if there are no objections...
