Stupid Parenting Questions

Re: Stupid Parenting Questions

  • We had the infant seat on either side at different times and I can't remember one being better than the other. Unfortunately my car didn't have the middle seat latch system, so that wasn't an option. I'm leaving DD1 where she is now (driver's side) because she is used to it. LO will be passenger side by default. I'm too short to pass much back anyway, so that really doesn't make much difference.

We chose the passenger side for the car seat base. My husband took it upon himself to install and since we read it was safest in the middle, that is what he did. When I took a look, I was like, oh, I didn't know our car had a latch system in the middle. He didn't know what I was talking about. Ha. I am sure the seatbelt keeps in safe in the middle, but I feel better with it on the passenger side with the latch system. Driver side was not an option since DH drives with the seat all the way back cause he is 6'9".
  • There are some sources that suggest seatbelt securement is actually safer than the latch system. Given of course that the seat is properly installed.
  • I was disappointed that I couldn't install the car seat in the middle seat of my car since I've heard that that is safest, but I have an SUV and am very petite so there's no way I'm going to be able to lift the car seat into the middle seat once baby puts on a few lbs.  We chose to put the car seat behind the passenger side so DH has room to move the drivers seat back enough when he's driving.  Plus, the way are garage is set up it's an easier spot to get the car seat in.  I don't think there's really a right answer.  We're having trouble trying to find a place to get the car seats inspected.  We were told fire stations or police stations.  The fire stations said they don't do it and the police station was supposed to call us back with info and never did.  Ugh.

  • I'm doing infant seat in the middle, and toddler seat on the back driver's side. The toddler seat I have offers more side impact protection than the infant seat does. DD's escort at school gets the children out on the back passenger side, so that's her side.
  • In FI's tahoe we did the car base in the middle because it has a latch system, but in my little Lexus we did the base on the passenger side. My driver's seat sits too far back and I want to be able to see and reach  baby on the passenger side. Plus, it's easier to access the passenger side in the garage rather than the driver side where I have to squeeze myself out.
  • OrangeEv  Another +1 to the NoseFreda.  I had to get over the ew factor, so I let my husband use it on our son first but it was awesome at helping him with his stuffiness.

  • I'd also recommend checking what your owners manual recommends for car seat placement, all of the car seat checks this is always the first place they'd start too.  With our cars there was the recommendation of the safest space being the middle, but when we just purchased my new SUV the recommendation is center for one, but the outer seats for doing two car seats.  Since we'll have two seats our 3 year old is behind the driver's seat and baby will be behind the passengers side.

Out hospital had car seat check hours when normal discharge was so we were able to get it checked then. You may want to check with your hospital.

  • Maybe this should be a bitchfest, but I don't have a manual for my sixteen-year-old vehicle and it's driving me nuts. I plan on trying to replace it next summer (it's not financially feasible now) and I don't think it's dangerous - it may even be safer than newer cars - but it annoys me not to have the damn manual!

  • @RainMira9e what kind of car is it? I know this is an obvious question but have you tried to find a PDF version online?
    Pregnancy Ticker

  • It's an Isuzu Rodeo. I have looked online - no PDF manual. I could buy one for $40 but that's too rich for my blood.

  • @RainMira9e I didn't click on the links to see if these are pdf format, but it looks like there are some 1999/2000 Rodeo manuals at this website.

(mobile bumping so my apologies if the link is weird!)
  • @ball4768 I appreciate it! I think these are workshop manuals, not owner's manuals, though I will check to see if they have the seatbelt information.

  • Newborn sleep question... We got a pack n play to have baby sleep in next to our bed until he's ready for the crib.  The one we got has the "newborn napper" attachment, which is a little bit more cozy for baby and I think it might vibrate.  I know that it's not meant for baby to sleep in "overnight," but what about during the first few weeks?  He won't be sleeping for more than a couple of hours at a time even at night, so is it safe for him to sleep in the napper?  My impression is that initially newborns pretty much only "nap" and don't really have longer stretches of sleep.  Has anyone used this attachment previously?

  • @Blonde1817 we have the same one and plan to use it the first few weeks as well, so I've been wondering the same thing...
  • Thanks everyone for the input, I have been locked out of replying on the bump for a few days and it's been driving me nuts!!! Idk why that happens every so often but it's frustrating.

While dicussin got with my dh, he did mention he doesn't think we have the latch system in the middle seat of my car so I think by default that is where nephew will have to go. I know he'll be a little disappointed since he's the oldest and he gets stuck in the middle, but at the same time he is also in the car the least of of the 3 of them so he'll have to deal. I hope it works like we have it planned because we haven't tried to arrange the seats yet but we definitely have to do it this weekend!

Same. I was planning on using the napper during the day in the living room, but not necessarily at night. But only because the pnp doesn't fit through our bedroom door.

  • @kmyers228 @blonde1817 @chriscasey33 we used that napper attachment to for DS when he first came home. Our pack and play was in the living room and it was just great to be able to take it out and bring him upstairs (although they do advise against moving it while baby is in it). We used it for a few weeks. LO def loved it- but my only issue was is that then we had to get him used to a flat surface again- when we switched him to the bassinet and that was kinda a pain. It might have been his age or something totally different but we did have a little trouble transitioning him to go back flat on his back to sleep. So just something to think about. Ours got ruined in a basement flood but I was going to skip using it for sleep this time around unless I got desperate- just to avoid that transition.

I have that pack n play and that was my plan, until I found put there are 2 family cradles and I'm a horrible.person if I don't use both.

Anyways, I think babe can sleep there for a few weeks weeks no prob
  • Thanks for the info @serenaxo84 ! Is there a little fitted sheet for the napper  part? I have a couple for the bassinet mattress but was wondering if you need anything for the napper.
  • Just want to +1 the fact that it can be hard to get an infant accustomed to sleeping on a flat surface, and the earlier you can do it the better in the long run. It really can suck while you're in that transition though.
  • Question about the PNP:

the one we have didn't come with a bassinet or changer because we wanted it to be versatile for the twins. No point in having just one bassinet, basically. So we have the flat cushion surface and then the bottom part, which I assume, you use once the babe is older. Is it okay for the babies to sleep on just that little cushion flat part?? Does this post make sense? I feel like I lost my English speaking skillz today.
  • In regards to where baby sleeps... Yeah wherever they'll sleep let them sleep. Our car seat would fit perfectly on the mamaroo swing and we would adjust the angle of the seat so it was the same as the vehicle and it was the ONLY way she would sleep.
I mean obviously she was buckled in, and we aren't totally stupid but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Shit I slept on my stomach on a pillow in the laundry basket when I was born cause that's how we rolled back then.

  • Thanks for the feedback! I hadn't thought about it being tougher to transition to sleeping on a flat surface.  I guess I'll see if he sleeps in the regular bassinet and if I'm desperate I'll use the napper attachment! I anticipate we'll be doing whatever works, I just wanted to make sure it was safe!

  • Honestly though - you do what you have to do to get some sleep! You need it to recover! Any pedi or book will tell you to only let your child sleep on a flat surface. But the rock and play or the newborn napper are options! Some people I know will only do the mamaroo! I tried to avoid car seat sleeping and only let LO sleep in the car seat if we came home and he fell asleep in the car because they say there is a SIDS risk. But some babies with reflux it's the only place they will sleep.
  • our plan is to have her sleep in a rock and play in the bedroom and nap in her crib. our house is all onenlevel and i figure during naps she can get used to the crib since she's next to the living room

Same. I was planning on using the napper during the day in the living room, but not necessarily at night. But only because the pnp doesn't fit through our bedroom door.
I had a infant specialist lady come to my house to be like an educational, support resource. She saw my PNP and I told her I've been having him sleep in the newborn napper and she said it was fine. Yeah of course the SIDS gods say flat hard surface but she assured me that the newborn napper is another safe option because the main goal is keep parents from resorting to sleeping with the newborn.
So she was just from our health dept but I thought I'd share.

I also told my pediatrician about using the RNP for sleep also and she basically said the same thing as the health dept lady. And then told me to make sure I buy the vibrating RNP because her baby loved it lil.

You definitely need to take your own health & safety into account when making decisions about the baby's sleeping arrangements. If you aren't safe then it is hard to keep anyone else safe. FX we all have a relatively easy time.

ETA: I hate to state the obvious or be the "just you wait" person but the truth is that however tired we all feel at the end of pregnancy, with pregsomnia and etc, it is *nothing* compared to what's coming.
  • @serenaxo84 my sceond was a reflux baby. I always had the angle on the car seat so it was the same as the truck. But I woke up one night to her gagging and chocking on throw up when she was sleeping on her back so that's not ideal either.

  • Does anyone have suggestions for how to not lose nipple shields? Mine didn't come in a case so I threw out the packaging but now find myself losing them left and right...wrapping in a burpcloth, I just keep ending up opening the cloth and dropping them. I'm going to google too but wondering if BTDT moms had a trick?

Just a ziplock and I kept them in with my breastpump or with my toiletries in my diaper bag.

Totally! That's why I mentioned reflux and car seats. I'm a big believer in you do what works for you. I don't ask my pedi for sleep advice because I know I won't listen to it!
  • @sjo_thetwins Yep, it's fine for them to sleep on the flat part of the PNP. Ours doesn't have any extra stuff either and DD slept in the raised flat part for 3.5 months.

Yup! And it's even worse when you have other kids beating your door down in the morning, you can't even sleep in with the baby if you wanted to. Some nights with my second baby my H would sleep downstairs for awhile cause he had to go to work. I sat in the glider in our room ALL NIGHT and was still there and hadn't slept when he showered and went to work. She was a miserable baby. I'm surprised I am having another.

Yes Docs, especially the ones without their own children tend to not be much help at all when it comes to sleep.
