Update on positive Panorama test

Hey guys! I had posted originally in another thread about this, but I don't want to hijack the OPs thread.

About two weeks ago I got back my Panorama test results with an increased risk for "vanishing twin or triploidy". Since there was NO evidence of there ever having been a twin, triploidy was the fear. (Triploidy is a complete extra set of chromosomes and not compatible with life).  I spent days crying, worrying, etc. My OB referred me to fetal medicine where I met with a genetic counselor and the dr there. We did an ultrasound and everything appeared normal, with no signs of triploidy. I then decided to have a CVS. After 4 days the preliminary FISH results came back normal, and today the final results were also normal. Oh, and it's a BOY!!!! We currently have a girl, boy, girl. :)

I cannot not even describe the sense of relief that I have!!! This has been a very emotional two weeks...and I feel I can finally breathe a little bit.

A part of me wishes I'd never had the panorama test. I'm not high risk and I'm 32. I asked about the quad screen and was offered this test and decided to go with it since it's more accurate. I don't know. Guess I just have mixed feelings after the emotional roller coaster I was on for the last two weeks.

  • That's wonderful! I'm sorry these past couple weeks have been so nerve-wracking, what a relief that everythings ok :) Congrats on your baby boy!
  • @alemarie1 - did your doctors recommend you have an amnio as well? I'm just curious, because mine did. I was told by my genetic counselor that just as the placenta can have a condition and the baby be fine, that the placenta can also be fine but the baby have the chromosome abnormality. Since the CVS tests the placenta, my docs recommended I have the amnio, which pulls DNA directly from baby.

Ahhhh...so, I had the amnio yesterday. I'm waiting, once again, for two weeks for results. My doctor does not believe there is anything wrong with baby, but since I want to know for sure I decided to have the amnio.
  • @ljane my doctors didn't recommend an amnio because they said that the CVS was just as acurrate as a diagnostic test. I've been in contact with 3 different doctors since the false positive paneroma:  my ob, a mfm specialist, and Tufts Hospital in Boston...  My doctors just said they were going to monitor me normally just as they would with any other pregnancy. My ultrasounds have looked good so far, but I've been waiting in agony for the 20 week anatomy scan. If anything is off at that time they will follow up with an amnio.

I'm sorry that you're going through the anxiety again with the amnio. I'm still a ball of anxiety and worried all the time. Plus, I'm still hiding my pregnancy from a lot of people. Sending positive thoughts your way <3  Please let me know how you make out everything.

Thanks! Funny how different docs have different opinions. I did make it clear that if baby DID have triploidy Id terminate the pregnancy, so I think that may also play a role in their recommendations. It makes me feel better that your doctors aren't concerned after a normal CVS. Mine told me that while the CVS was reassuring, it couldn't give us the 100% accuracy that the amnio could. (Since CVS didn't get DNA directly from baby). They also said it's very, very unlikely that the placenta would not have triploidy but baby would...but still possible.

My ultrasounds have all looked great as well. My gut is telling me everything is fine, but it's still not fun awaiting more results.

Eta: we announced the pregnancy about a week before I got my positive panorama test. I completely regretted doing so.
  • @ljane I'm sure everything is fine as well!  The good thing is that once you get these results you can totally rest without any uncertainty.  Will you have the FISH results in 48 hours? I've been researching the CVS accuracy online and haven't found much information on women that have had both tests. I will still mention to my doctor again at my next appointment because I haven't been able to totally relax and enjoy my pregnancy.  I wish I never had the Panoroma done because it's caused a lot of anxiety and worry.

  • My fetal medicine dr told me the fish amnio results would be no more accurate than the CVS, so I'm waiting on the full results. I don't really understand why that is, but oh well! I also tried looking up women having both tests and haven't found much either! My doc told me not nearly as many women are having the CVS these days due to the NIPT tests. I also wasn't able to find ANY info on women that had a normal CVS and then an abnormal amnio.

I haven't been able to fully enjoy my pregnancy either...in the back of my mind I still think "what if...."  I've really debated whether I'd have the panorama again. I honestly don't know. I'm the kind of person that needs to know if something is wrong, and I know that the course of the pregnancy would change if I found out baby had a condition that wasn't compatible with life.

I've been having awful headaches due to the stress of it all. Ahhhhh.
  • So happy for you!  Wish you the best with the rest of your pregnancy journey!
